Edo Governorship Election: INEC Trains Visually Impaired On Use Of Braille Ballot Guide

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo, on Friday trained visually impaired persons on the use of braille ballot guide to vote in the Sept. 19 governorship election in the state.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo, Johnson Alalibo, while declaring the training session open, said braille ballot guide was designed to include the blind in the electoral process.

Alalibo, who was represented by the INEC Administrative Secretary in Edo, Mr Etim Umoh, said blind voters were at the risk of compromised access to printed ballots and other electoral materials.

The reside t electoral commissioner said INEC recognised the rights of persons with disabilities.

“The commission within its mandate has taken concrete actions to incorporate People with Disabilities (PWDs) in the electoral process with the introduction of the braille ballot guide for use by visually impaired.

“The braille ballot guide was effectively deployed in Osun 2019 general elections and in Kogi election to help secure the right of the blind to vote in secret and independently,” Alalibo said.

According to him, the commission is doing it best to ensure inclusiveness and accessibility for all eligible Nigerians irrespective of their abilities and status.

The Assistant Director, CSO liaison, INEC headquarters, Abuja, Sunny Ezumah, explained that the device enabled the visually impaired voter to place the ballot paper in the guide without assistance.

Ezumah said “the objective of the the training is to educate the participants on the voting process and procedure.

“It is also to educate the participants on the planned activities of the commission towards the governorship election.”

According to him, the braille ballot guide piloted in Osun, marked a critical advancement in opening of Nigeria’s electoral process to voters with disabilities.

Mr Timidi Wariowei, the Head of Voter Education and Publicity in the state spoke on voting procedure and INEC policy framework on election day activities amid COVID-19 pandemic.

Wariowei noted that the voting procedure had not changed, adding that accreditation and voting would take place simultaneously.

He said: “Accreditation and voting would begin at 8.30 a.m. and stop at 2.30 p.m. Anybody on queue before 2.30 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

“This training will enable you to master the braille ballot guide so that you can vote independently. Phones will not be allowed into the voting centres.

“So take the training seriously so that you can also teach others who are not here because of COVID-19, and we have to maintain social distancing.”

According to him, the commission will ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures and guidelines on the election day.

Mr Melody Omosa, the President of Network Advocacy for Persons with Visible Disabilities (NAPVID), thanked INEC for the gesture and urged the participants to take the training seriously.

In a related development, INEC also held a one-day voter education and sensitisation forum for sign language interpreters.

INEC said the objective of the forum was to educate and equip sign language interpreters with the relevant knowledge needed to assist it interpret the voting procedure to the deaf at the polling units. (NAN)

De Jong Sends Red Devil Parking From Europa League

Luuk de Jong fired Sevilla into another Europa League final as the LaLiga side won 2-1 in Cologne to shatter Manchester United‘s hopes of silverware.

Winners of this competition in 2014, 2015 and 2016, Sevilla took another stride towards glory after resisting heavy pressure from United in this semi-final.

United went ahead with a Bruno Fernandes penalty, but former Liverpool fringe player Suso levelled for Sevilla.

And De Jong connected sweetly with a cross swung over by Jesus Navas in the 78th minute to send Julen Lopetegui’s side through to Friday’s showpiece.

United took a ninth-minute lead when Fernandes showed a familiar swagger in driving his penalty past Yassine Bounou, after a shabby challenge from Diego Carlos on Marcus Rashford.

Sevilla were not waiting long for their equaliser, though. It came in the 26th minute, with Suso driving past David de Gea after left-back Sergio Reguilon broke forward and crossed low and out of reach of United’s defenders.

Anthony Martial, Rashford, Fernandes and Mason Greenwood all had great openings for United, who dominated large parts of the game but could not put away a goal in open play.

Bounou was outstanding, and there were concerns for United when Sevilla asked for a penalty as a free-kick from Joan Jordan hit Fernandes on the elbow.Article continues below

Sevilla were out of luck then but the winner soon arrived, with United’s defenders switching off.

De Jong was a Premier League flop during a short spell at Newcastle United six years ago, and he was only a substitute on this occasion after a goal drought.

But he would prove the Sevilla hero, half-volleying home the precise delivery from former Manchester City winger Navas.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Usman Yahaya in a statement in Lagos, said that the seizure made in one day was at Ido, Eruwa Road in Ibadan.

The statement was signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Unit, Peter Duniya.

According to him, the contraband comprise of 34 fairly used and new vehicles, laden with second hand clothes, Indian hemp and foreign parboiled rice.

“Some economic saboteurs met their waterloo when our operatives acting based on credible information made a single seizure at Ido, Eruwa Road, Ibadan of Oyo State.

“The contrabands include 34 different brands of both new and used vehicles laden with banned items such as second hand clothes, foreign parboiled rice and Indian hemp

“Though there were stiff resistance from the smugglers who engaged the support of hoodlums, but the Customs operatives displayed high level of professionalism and restraint to secure the contraband to the Customs warehouse in Lagos without casualties,” he said.

He, however, warned smugglers to desist from engaging in economic activities that sabotaged the government policies of making Nigeria self sufficient in food production.

“We appreciate the support and the cooperation of patriotic members of the public in carrying out our mandate by providing timely and useful information.

“However, recalcitrant economic saboteurs should note that, they will continue to count their losses because we are better mobilised, organised and backed by the extant laws to be always ahead of them,” he said. (NAN)

APGA Chieftain In Anambra Defects To APC

Chief Ekene Enefe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in Anambra, has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Enefe who disclosed this to journalists in Awka on Sunday, said the move was to enable him contribute his quota towards producing a president of Igbo extraction in 2023, which was only realisable in APC.

He said his entry into APC would also strengthen the base of APC in Anambra and brighten the party’s chances of taking over the Government House in 2021.

Enefe who was APGA candidate for Oyi/Anyamelum Federal Constituency Election in 2019, said he left APGA because it had derailed and did not serve the larger interests of the people of the South East in national politics.

He said he was also leaving the party because of its failed promises and current structure of governance, which had affected the quality of service delivery.

“I have moved on to the APC, I have registered in my ward and soon I will meet the Anambra chapter of the party for the formal declaration, my supporters are happy with our new political home.

“Our people have to wake up, we cannot be talking about national politics when we are locked up in a sectional party, APGA cannot give us presidency, we have to come out of our cocoon and embrace a party like APC which can make that aspiration possible.

“Most of us were in APGA to help the government succeed, but it is so unfortunate that I have to leave because the party has become a one-man party,” he said.

Enefe said he was therefore, going into APC with his supporters and Anambra Destiny Mandate, a grassroots based political association that operates in every political ward of Anambra.

In its reaction, APGA said it was unmoved with the defection.
Mr Tony Ifeanyi, Secretary of APGA in Anambra who is also from the same federal constituency with Enefe, said his excuses were not true as the party was the same when he joined in the first place.(NAN).
