Barca Sack Setien; Koeman Frontrunner As Replacement

Ronald Koeman is the frontrunner to be the next Barcelona manager after the club confirmed the sacking of Quique Setien.

Setien was sacked in a meeting with technical director Eric Abidal just days after the humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Koeman – a Barcelona great as a player – is said to be the preferred choice of president Josep Maria Bartomeu, with an announcement expected in the next few days.

A Barcelona statement read: “This is the first decision within a wider restructuring of the first team which will be agreed between the current technical secretary and the new coach, who will be announced in the coming days.”

Barcelona would need to pay compensation to get Ronald Koeman out of his job as Netherlands head coach
Barca would need to pay compensation to get Koeman out of his current role as Netherlands head coach.

Ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is also a strong candidate. He is the preferred choice of director Ramon Planes, with whom he worked at Espanyol.

However, the potential appointment of Pochettino has been met with opposition from ‘El Entorno’ – a term coined by Johan Cruyff in 1992 to describe the ‘environment’ of influential media and fans surrounding the team.

Mauricio Pochettino is also a strong candidate for the Barcelona job
Pochettino is said to be interested in the job despite distancing himself in the past because of his legacy with Espanyol.

He recently did an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais in which he tried to make amends for previous comments. Pochettino was a prominent player and then head coach at Espanyol.

Some members of the Barca board also hold out hope of convincing Xavi to return to the club. He is currently in charge at Qatari side Al Sadd.

Other names in the frame include Laurent Blanc, who is another ex-Barca player, and Barca B head coach Garcia Pimienta.

Kompany Retires As Player To Become Anderlecht Manager

Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has retired as a player to become manager of Anderlecht on a four-year deal.

The four-time Premier League champion joined the Belgian side in a player-manager role in May 2019 and moved into a new position as co-manager to Franky Vercauteren, but has now announced his retirement as a player.

Kompany, 34, left City at the end of the 2018/19 season after making 360 appearances across all competitions in order to return to his boyhood club.

Vincent Kompany is seen as a father figure by the young Anderlecht players
Arriving from Hamburg in 2008 for a fee of around £6m, Kompany went on to win four top-flight titles as well as two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields in 11 years – becoming a City legend in the process.

“I want to fully commit to my role as a coach and need 100 per cent of my time and focus for it,” Kompany told the Anderlecht club website. “That’s why I’m quitting as a football player. Our ambition and our hunger remains the same.

Kompany says he wants Anderlecht to play a 'modern style of football'
“I want to stay with the club for at least four seasons and prove that Anderlecht can play a modern style of football, with results. I want to thank Franky (co-manager Frank Vercauteren) for all his help.”

Anderlecht chief executive Karel Van Eetvelt added: “As everybody knows, this was always the plan.

“It might have come a little sooner than expected, but Vincent committing himself for another four seasons to the club is great news for the club, our supporters and our players.”

Footballers past and present paid tribute to Kompany following news of his retirement on Monday, including former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, who played with the defender for Belgium.

Election Tribunal Sacks Diri As Bayelsa Governor

The Bayelsa State Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has annulled the election of Duoye Diri, governor of Bayelsa State.

The election was nullified based on a petition by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party, which argued that it was unlawfully excluded from participating in the election.

Diri, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, was sworn in as governor after the Supreme Court sacked David Lyon as governor-elect 24 hours before his inauguration.

In a majority judgment delivered by Justice Yunusa Musa in the petition, the tribunal held that the Independent National Electoral Commission unlawfully excluded ANDP from the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

It, therefore, ordered INEC to conduct a fresh governorship election in Bayelsa State within 90 days. (SaharaReporters)

Anambra Accident Claims 2 Lives

Two persons were confirmed dead in an accident involving a bus and two motorcycles near Odumodu junction along Awka-Onitsha expressway, Anambra, on Sunday night.

Mr Andrew Kumapayi, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday.

Kumapayi said that the accident, which occurred around 7 p.m., was caused by speeding.

The FRSC boss noted that 13 people, eight male adults and five female adults, were involved in the accident, which claimed two lives.

According to him, the crash involved a Toyota Hiace bus with enlistment number AAA863XJ, and two motorcycles with registration numbers NSK808QT and AAl863XJ.

“The bus driver and the riders of the motorcycles were reportedly on top speed and had a head-on-collusion which caused the death of two male adults, while three female adults sustained injuries.

“The victims were rushed to Iyeanu hospital in Ogidi and the dead victims were handed over to their families after being confirmed dead by the doctors,’’ he said.

Kumapayi said that the Nigeria Police Force took the vehicle and motorcycles to their station for further investigation.

While condoling with the families of the dead, he warned motorists against excessive speeding, especially within built-up areas.

According to him, road traffic crashes are avoidable, if drivers are careful.(NAN)

*HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES*

*BIBLE READING: EPHESIANS 5:25-31; 1PETER3:7; MALACHI 2: 13-16*

*Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her. Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV).*

Husbands, absolutely no one in your life is more precious or important to you than your wives. She started with you, stayed with you, she will be with you through many years to come. No other relationship in your life can be compared with the relationship with your wife.

From our Bible reading today, Paul by the commandment of Jesus commanded husbands to love their wives and mentioned why they should do so, that at the point of marriage the woman became the body of the man while the man became the head of the woman. He argued that no one can actually mistreat his own body but take adequate and utmost care of it. He charged husbands to take their cue from Christ, who has not ceased to take care of His bride - the Church.

Peter had been married for many years before he gave the charge in 1 Peter 3:7. He had a godly marriage that was an example for the early Church. On that basis, he could speak to husbands because he knew what God expects from them. He spoke strongly on how husbands ought to treat their wives so that they will not hinder their prayers. He commanded husbands to 'give honour' to their wives, the Greek word "give" is "aponemo" The word means to assign, to designate, to allocate, or to intentionally give something to someone. It refers to a calculated decision to give attention, awareness, or consideration to someone else. For God to hear and answer the prayers of a husband, Peter charged husbands to purposefully show attention and consideration to their wives, because in marriage these things don't come easily, it must be cultivated through discipline (Malachi 2:14).

The word "honour" paints the picture of something so valuable that it is held as precious, prized, cherished, treasured, and very dear. He used the word to speak of a husband who values his wife highly, holds her in honour, treats her graciously, esteems her, handles her respectfully, treats her like a prized treasure that is very dear to him. When Apostle Peter said that wives are the 'weaker vessel,' he does not mean that they are inferior or substandard, rather, he was referring to them as fragile and of great value.

Women like active-love, husbands let your love be action-packed. Be a transparent husband, do not be a mystery man that needs all kinds of codes to be demystified. Husbands must always of truth treat their wives as sanctified vessels unto themselves. Husbands should honour their wives because the institution of marriage is hallowed. Just as Jesus poured His love and honour on His Bride - the Church, so ought husbands to pour thier love and honour on their wives.

*PRAYER
Lord, help my inadequacies and failings in loving my wife. I ask for grace to become a better and more loving husband. Lord, help me to accept as my beloved the woman You gave me as wife, to pour my love and affection on her without measure in Jesus' mighty name, amen.

Blasphemy: US agency kicks as Kano court jails 13-year-old boy for 10 years

THE United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has faulted the judgment of an Upper Sharia Court in Kano State sentencing a 13-year-old boy, Umar Farouq, to 10 years in prison for making derogatory statements toward Allah in an argument with a friend.

Farouq was convicted on August 10, 202o, by Aliyu Kanu, the same judge who sentenced a Musician, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, to death for blaspheming Prophet Mohammed.

Baba-Jibo Ibrahim, spokesman for Kano Region Justice Ministry, said the court handed down the death sentence as enshrined in Islamic laws based on irrefutable evidence and the convict’s admission of guilt.

The PUNCH reports that although Farouq is a minor by Nigerian law and should not have been tried as an adult, Islamic canons regard anyone who has begun puberty as an adult.

Kano, a predominantly Muslim northern Nigerian state, has Islamic Sharia courts that function alongside civil courts and introduced Sharia law in 2000.

But the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has condemned the blasphemy laws in Nigeria.

The USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan Federal Government entity established by the US Congress to monitor, analyse, and report threats to religious freedom abroad.

In a statement in reaction to the judgment, the US commission condemned the death sentence handed to Sharif-Aminu for allegedly insulting the Prophet Mohammed.

USCIRF Commissioner, Frederick Davie, stated, “It is unconscionable that Sharif-Aminu is facing a death sentence merely for expressing his beliefs artistically through music. The US Senate should work swiftly to pass Resolution 458, which calls for the global repeal of heresy, blasphemy, and apostasy laws.”

Also, the President of the African Bar Association, Mr Hannibal Uwaifo, described the verdict on Farouq as unconstitutional, calling on the Attorney General of the Federation to stop the Sharia court from making a mockery of Nigerian on the international scene.

Uwaifo said, “I call on the Attorney General of the Federation to step in and to stop this kind of sectional court from making mockery of Nigeria. This is a country where people are stealing billions of naira and being given a pat on the back; then you say someone committed blasphemy, according to your own religion, and then you sentence him to death or sentence a teenager to 10 years’ imprisonment. I think we should stop making a laughing stock.”

In the same vein, two civil society groups have condemned the Shari’a court verdict.

The Convener, Coalition in Defence of Democracy and Constitution, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, said, “What is coming out of Kano is a challenge to section 10 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. We know that the current Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, is more or less not interested in the secularity of this country.

“What is going on in Kano is an attempt to restructure Nigeria through the back door to create a two-nation in one because the message they are sending to the international community is that there is a part of the country operating a different legal system.”

Speaking in the same vein, the National Coordinator, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the judjement did not conform with human rights conventions and treaties to which Nigeria was a signatory.

He stated, “Section 10 of the constitution prohibits the elevation of any religion as a state religion, so the Kano State government does not have the constitutional rights to legislate Islam as a state religion.”

None of our govs supports Agboola – South-West PDP Chairman

The Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party Caretaker Committee in the South-West, Mr Dayo Ogungbenro, has dismissed insinuations that some governors elected on the platform of the party are throwing their weight behind the candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, Mr Agboola Ajayi, in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State.

Ogungbenro, in a statement on Sunday, challenged the authors of what he called misleading reports to provide evidence that any PDP governor was backing Ajayi.

He said, “PDP will never work with a renegade and political turncoat whose ambition is not grounded in reality. It is a mark of hypocrisy for those who could not abide by the result of a free and fair governorship primary to be planting fake news in the media suggesting that they are being sponsored by PDP governors in other states.

“For the avoidance of doubt, PDP governors, members in Ondo State and the good people of Ondo State are all solidly behind the candidate of our party, Eyitayo Jegede. They are doing everything within their power and within the laws of the land to ensure that he emerges the governor of Ondo State.”
