Buhari names 7-man panel to probe fraud allegations against Magu, EFCC

President Muhammadu Buhari appeares to have bowed to public pressure to empanel a judicial commission of enquiry into the financial impropriety levelled against the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, by his supervising minister, Abubakar Malami, by finally authorising one to conduct a holistic probe of the man and the finances of the anti-graft agency from 2015 to 2020. The panel, which is still headed by the former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, has six others as members.

They are: DIG Anthony Ogbizi Michael (NPF)- South-South, Deputy Chairman; Muhammad Abubakar Babadoko, Federal Ministry of Justice (North Central); Hassan Yahaya Abdullahi (DSS) (North Central); Muhammad Shamsuddeen (OAGF) (North West); Douglas Egweme (NFIU) South-East, while Kazeem Attitebi (South-West) will serve as the Secretary Buhari in an authority instrument dated July 3, 2020, derivable from the Tribunals of Inquiry Act (Cap T21, LFN, 2004), gave the panel five key terms of reference and 45 days to conduct its inquiry and turn in its report to the Presidency.

Terms of Reference The Extent of Mismanagement/Diversion of Recovered Assets *The panel is to investigate, verify and review the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Recovered Assets as it relates to EFCC, with a view to ascertaining the complicity or otherwise of the acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, in the management of the assets recovered by the commission.

“Identify avenues through which the recovered assets are dissipated and seized, recovered, forfeited (interim and final) assets are valued, managed, disposed or mismanaged, with a view to ascertaining compliance or otherwise with extant laws, regulations, processes and procedures

“Review the existing procedures on the management of the seized, recovered and forfeited assets (interim and final) and proffer standard operational procedure for the management of seized, recovered and forfeited assets.

“Determine whether moveable or immoveable assets, including funds or cash recovered during his tenure, whether locally in Nigeria or abroad, are being kept safely in a manner as to preserve their original value.

“Identify locations of all moveable and immoveable assets, funds or cash that are under interim or final forfeiture, based on administrative or court orders and identify the bank accounts to which recovered funds or cash were paid into and whether generated interests from the recovered funds or cash were properly accounted for.

Juventus Give Pirlo His First Managerial Role

Serie A champions Juventus stunned Italian football on Saturday by naming World Cup-winning midfielder Andrea Pirlo as manager on a two-year contract.

The appointment has come even in spite of the fact that their former player has no previous experience in the role.

Pirlo, 41, was promoted to the senior job one week after being named coach of Juve’s under-23 side, who play in the Italian third tier.

He has not taken charge of a match.

The decision came hours after the Turin club sacked coach Maurizio Sarri following their UEFA Champions League last 16 exit to Olympique Lyonnais on away goals on Friday..

Former Chelsea manager Sarri had been in charge for one season and led Juve to a ninth successive Serie A title.

He still fell well short of the enormous expectations at the club, who have set their hearts on winning the UEFA Champions League.

The presence of five-times World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo in attack has increased expectations.

“Today’s choice is based on the belief that Pirlo has what it takes to lead from his debut on the bench an expert and talented squad to pursue new successes,” Juve said in a statement.

“Today begins a new chapter of his career in the world of football, as it was said almost a week ago: from Maestro to Mister,” it added.

Juventus may be hoping Pirlo can replicate the achievements of Zinedine Zidane, another former world class player who has enjoyed success at Real Madrid in spite of having no previous coaching experience.



Ex-Juve player Zidane has won two La Liga and three UEFA Champions League titles in two stints with the Spanish side since he was first handed the reins.

“The decision for Pirlo was very natural, in the Juventus style, because he is someone who played for us, has always been in contact with everyone here and it felt natural,” said the club’s chief football officer Fabio Paratici.

“We also believe he is pre-destined for greatness. He was as a player and we are confident he can do the same as a coach.”

Pirlo, a somewhat enigmatic figure, became famous in his role as a deep-lying playmaker, spraying pinpoint passes all over the pitch from his slot just in front of the defence.

He won just about every possible honour, reaching a peak by lifting the FIFA World Cup with Italy in 2006.

Pirlo won the UEFA Champions League twice with AC Milan, Serie A twice with AC Milan and four times with Juventus.

He also won FIFA Club World Cup with AC Milan, the Coppa Italia with AC Milan and Juve, plus Serie B as a youngster with Brescia.

Having been developed at Brescia, he spent the bulk of his career at AC Milan and then Juventus.

But he also had a short stint at Inter Milan, played on loan at Reggina and finished his playing career at New York City in Major League Soccer.

Pirlo will have to deal with huge expectations at Juve where winning Serie A is now seen almost as an obligation.

The Turin club have clearly set their hearts on winning the Champions League but it has proved elusive with Juve having lost in the 2015 and 2017 finals.(Reuters/NAN).

Accident Claims 2 Lives In Anambra – FRSC

Two persons were confirmed dead on Saturday night in an accident involving a bus and a motorcycle at New Jerusalem along Nanka-oko Road in Orumba North area of Anambra.

Mr Andrew Kumapayi, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Sunday.

Kumapayi said that the accident, which occurred around 8:40 p.m, was caused by overspeeding.


The FRSC boss said that four people, all male, were involved in the accident, but two died.

“The crash involved a Mitsubishi L300 bus with enlistment number FGG212XV and a Honda C75 Motorcycle with registration number AKL843QH.



“The bus driver and the rider of the motorcycle were reportedly on top speed and had a head-on-collusion as they tried to avoid potholes.

“The two victims on the motorcycle were rushed to St. Joseph Hospital, Nanka by FRSC rescue team from Nanka Outpost. They were confirmed dead by doctors at the hospital, ” he said.

Kumapayi said that the incident had been referred to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

While condoling with the families of the dead, he warned motorists against overspeeding, especially within built-up areas.

” Drivers should drive within stipulated speed limits, ensure maximum concentration and must tolerate other road users. Most
road accidents are avoidable, ” he said.(NAN)

FG Supports Imo Farmers With 20,000 Cocoa Seedlings, Other Improved Seeds

The Federal Government in its bid to help cushion the effect of Coronavirus (COVID-19) has supported smallholder farmers in Imo State with 20,000 Cocoa seedlings and other improved seeds.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, in a statement issued by the Director of Information, Mr Theodore Ogaziechi, said this on Sunday in Abuja.

The minister said the Federal Government was committed to improving agriculture.


Nanono said this during the official roll out ceremony of the distribution of free agricultural inputs to farmers in Imo State.

Nanono added that over 5,000 oil palm sprouted nuts and 1,500 kilogramme of cashew seeds were distributed to the farmers.

He stressed that yam farmers through their national association and other cooperative groups would be supported with 20,000 one node vine cuttings and 10,000 foundation seeds of yam and 200 liters of pathway organic growth enhancer.

“Potatoes farmers will benefit from 1,500 bundles of orange fleshed sweet potatoes that were distributed at the occasion, and 200 liters of pathway organic solution for the yam farmers,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensuring that smallholder farmers across the country had access to quality seeds.

According to him, having access to quality seeds was a foundation to attaining food and nutrition security and industrialisation of the agricultural sector.

“Through this effort and other complementary interventions by different stakeholders, government hopes to increase quality seeds, resilience of farmers, accessibility and national food systems in general.

“The ministry is supporting breeder and foundation seeds production and linking up with private seed companies to make certified seeds available to farmers’’.

“This is coupled with our effort to improve rural infrastructure and other value-chains supports to contribute to attainment of Mr. President’s desire to ensure easy access to quality food and nutrition by Nigerians,”he said.

The minister said that different categories of seeds, seedlings of cocoa, sprouted nuts of oil palm, vines of orange flesh, sweet potatoes, one node vine cuttings of yam and its seeds and groundnut seeds were distributed to farmers.

He stressed that the ” this is part of the ministry’s intervention to reduce effect of COVID-19 pandemic on agricultural production in Nigeria and prevent food scarcity in 2021.

“The ministry is also supporting groundnut farmers through the Groundnut Producers, Processors and Marketers Association (GPPMAN) with improved 3 metric tonnes of groundnut seeds.



“These seeds, seedlings, nuts, vines and other inputs are being given to farmers free.”

The minister said that priority was given to women farmers, adding that, “at least 35 per cent of the agricultural inputs are targeted at women farmers.”

” This in line with the targets set in our National Gender Plan and Policies aimed at ensuring increased opportunities for women.

“This has been communicated to the farmer
associations accordingly’’.

“The next major roll-out of support to farmers will take place in Borno State.

” The government is set to support farmers in the state with mproved wheat, groundnut and rice seeds as well as gum Arabic seedlings among other things.”

In his remark, the Imo State Gov., Hope Uzodimma, lauded the agricultural policies and visionary leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari in job creation, food sufficiency and economic growth.

He said: ” Imo State will buy into the agriculture policies because the state has agricultural potentials.

“These potentials will create jobs for the teeming youth population and boost the Internally Generated Revenue(IGR) of the state and Nigeria in general.”

The Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Imo State, Dr Lambert Orisakwe, said that “Imo State is predominantly an agrarian society where every family is engaged in one form of agricultural practice or the other”.

He said the coming of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to distribute agro-palliative to farmers in the state was a welcome development.

“This August and memorable occasion is very refreshing and calls for celebration.

The Commissioner of Livestock Development, Imo State , Hon. Obiageri Ajoku, called for robust synergy with the federal ministry of agriculture toward achieving food sufficiency and good nutrition in Nigeria.

The Director, Federal Department of Agriculture in the Ministry, Mrs Karima Babangida, thanked the governor for gracing the occasion.

Anglican Bishop Says COVID-19 Is Blessing In Disguise

Rt. Revd Manasses Okere, Bishop, Anglican Diocese, Isiukwuato in Abia, has said that the Coronavirus pandemic was a blessing in disguise as it created room for domestic church to thrive.

Okere, who was Guest Preacher at the 12th Synod of Anglican Diocese of Awka, said it had united many families by making them spend long and quality time together.

The synod theme was entitled: “God of Eternal Destiny and His Major Attributes.”


Okere said though COVID-19 came with so much challenges on the political economy of societies, it had also strengthened the faith of people in God as the only One with solutions to the problem of the world.

”The pandemic is a blessing in disguise for the church in particular because it provided the environment for the domestic church, where families prayed together,mto thrive.

“God is aware COVID-19 will come the time it came, nothing happens to God by surprise because He is in charge of his creatures and all things worketh together, whether good or bad, for the good of God’s children.

“Though COVID-19 has wreaked havoc in our global society, it has brought good fortunes and re-united families by making them to sit together and pray.



“It also made people to turn to God after knowing that science has failed.

“It’s not God that brought it, but He is aware that was coming, and will work out His purpose through it.

“COVID-19 has also exposed the weakness of our health sectors, exposed us globally, but we thank God for the efforts so far, though has been mixed with politics, we will continue to look unto God,” he said.

Okere lauded his hosts, Most Revd Alexander Chibuzor Ibezim, Bishop, Diocese of Awka and his wife, Mrs Martha Chioma Ibezim, for their steadfastness in the service of the Lord.

Earlier in his remark, Bishop Ibezim prayed that Christians would not be found wanting at the end of the Christian race in heaven especially Church leaders.

Ibezim also dedicated a two-stores primary school block built by the family of Dr Okey Anuenyiagu and blessed those who had contributed in various ways for the advancement of the Anglican Mission in the community.

Free facemasks were also distributed to the congregation as a means of reawakening people consciousness in complying to COVID-19 protocols.

Unknown Assailants Kill Obiano’s Aide On Security

Unknown assailants on Sunday stormed the residence of Mr Azubuike Ekwegbalu, the Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Willie Obiano on Security, leaving him dead after allegedly stabbing him with a kitchen knife.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the incident occurred early hours of Sunday at his residence at the Commissioners’ Quarters, Awka, a high brow area for government officials. An eyewitness said the late Ekwegbalu, who hails from Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area of the state, was a close relation to the wife of the governor.


“He was murdered by unknown men last night at the commissioners’ quarters, Awka.“This is barbaric. May his soul rest in peace. “Security operatives must do all that is possible to bring the killers to justice,” the source said.




Confirming the incident in a statement, the Spokesman of the Police Command in the state, SP Haruna Mohammed, said one suspect, who was seen in the premises had been arrested.“On Aug. 9, 2020 at about 1:30a.m., there was a report of alleged murder of one Azuibuike Ekwegbalu, aged 43 years, native of Ogbunike in Oyi LGA but resident at the Commissioners quarters Awka.

“Following the report, Police detectives attached to ‘B’ Division Awka led by the DPO, CSP Emma Ogbuanya visited the scene and rushed victim who was found in a pool of blood to COOUTH Awka for medical attention.“He was certified dead by the medical doctor on arrival while his corpse was deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy,” he noted.

Mohammed said a careful observation on the deceased body revealed stab wounds while a blood stained Kitchen knife was also recovered as exhibit at the scene.“Consequently, one suspect who allegedly was in the premises has been arrested and the case is under investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he stated.
