U.S Donates 200 Ventilators To Nigeria

The U.S. government on Tuesday donated 200 life-saving ventilators to Nigeria as a fulfilment to help Nigeria in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, said the 200 ventilators being transferred are compact, portable and can easily be mobilsed to reach patients with the most severe symptoms of COVID-19

The U.S Ambassador said earlier this year, following a discussion with President Buhari, U.S President, Donald Trump has promised to assist Nigeria in fighting the pandemic,

“This donation consists of 200 ventilators, which, as we all know by now, are a critical component of the response strategy to save the lives of persons who have been severely impacted by this viral infection.

“They will certainly be of great benefit to the people of Nigeria and I wish to convey the appreciation of His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“And of the government of Nigeria, to President Donald Trump and the United States Government for the generous consideration and friendly gesture.

“Our support includes training on the use and maintenance of this equipment, ensuring that the ventilators can address other respiratory illnesses in the years beyond the virus.

“USAID will work very closely and energetically over the next couple of weeks with the Ministry of Health and the Presidential Task Force to bring these ventilators across each of Nigeria’s states and the FCT.

“In fighting the COVID pandemic, it is critically important that doctors have adequate access to medical oxygen, as these ventilators depend on a reliable supply to be effective in treating patients with severe symptoms.

“The United States has been pivotal in supporting Nigeria’s membership in the ‘Every Breath Counts’ Coalition. Nigeria is now one of just two countries in Africa to have an “oxygen roadmap” that seeks to fight against pneumonia, hypoxemia, and now COVID-19,” Leonard said.

Leonard lauded Nigeria’s effort in combating the virus and efforts of the country in taking early action to combat and mitigate its spread.”

“I hope to see Nigeria continue this trajectory as an example for other nations to follow,” Leonard added.

She said the American people remain committed to working with Nigeria to implement effective disease surveillance efforts and to improve its capacity to safely isolate and treat confirmed cases as we look ahead to a virus-free Nigeria.

Receiving the ventilators on behalf of the Federal Government, Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, said the ventilators were valuable equipment to support Nigeria in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ehanire said the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), acting on behalf of the United States Government, invited him to receive the ventilators on behalf of the Government of Nigeria.

The Minister noted that the delivery of the medical ventilators, courtesy of the President and people of the United States of America, will help boost Nigeria’s intensive care response capability.

“We have worked hard to cope and, where necessary, adjust to the changes.

“The Federal Ministry of Health, and its public health Agency, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), have focused on providing guidance to tackle the challenges.

“Our health workers have been trained and equipped and are doing the needful to attend to COVID-19 patients and give emergency care, while not losing sight of routine and essential health services.

“I believe they, and the people of Nigeria, are encouraged and reassured by the arrival of these ventilators to facilitate critical care aspects of treatment.

“I wish to also commend the United States Agency for International Development, the US Center for Disease Control and the US Ambassador to Nigeria – Her Excellency Mary Beth Leonard, for their interest and engagement in Nigeria, even beyond the advent of COVID-19.

“Her Excellency has demonstrated personal concern by paying a solidarity visit to the Federal Ministry of Health,” Ehanire said.

Ehanire however called on the United States Government to lend its full weight to global efforts to find efficacious therapeutics and vaccines to neutralize the threat of COVID-19 to the global community and to guarantee fair allocation to all countries and people.

“The speed and ease with which COVID-19 has spread across the globe clearly shows that it is a threat to mankind.

“Without thefull collaboration of all nations, the threat of COVID to any one part of the world is a threat to all,” Ehanire also said.

“We appreciate that this gift comes against the backdrop that the United States is also fighting its own fierce battle against the COVID-19 plague. We wish them the very best in this challenge,” Ehanire said.

Ehanire further said the nation witnessed the severity of the impact of COVID-19 outbreak on health systems, economy and social structure of all nations, especially on low and lower middle-income countries of the world.

Also speaking, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu said the more the ventilators, the more chances for people to survive COVID-19.

Ihekweazu who was represented by the Agency’s Director of Lab Services, Mrs Nwando Mba said the additional ventilators will support Nigeria’s response to not just COVID-19 but also intensive care.

The NCDC D-G said most of the COVID-19 related deaths were as a result of respiratory complications as he reiterates the benefits of the additional ventilators.

Ihekwazu also appreciated the U.S government for its many support and the donation of ventilators. (NAN)

Klose: Africa Will Win FIFA World Cup With More Slots

Legendary Germany striker legend Miroslav Klose says an African country will win the FIFA World Cup if the continent has more slots like their European counterparts.

Africa are allocated five out of the 32 slots while World Cup power houses Europe and South America have 13 and five slots respectively.

While five countries from Europe have won the World Cup (England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain) three from South America (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay) have tasted glory on football’s biggest stage. The farthest African teams have been at the World Cup is the quarter-final (Cameroon, Senegal, Ghana).Co-host of the 2002 World Cup South Korea is the only Asian country that has gotten to the semi-final.And according to Klose, the 2014 World Cup who is also the tournament’s all time leading goalscorer, posited that the five slots allocated to Africa limits the continent’s chances of winning it.

“There is no way Africa can win the World cup, unless FIFA brings balance to the number of teams that qualifies to the World cup,” the former Bayern Munich striker said, as cited by Soccer Scenes Africa.

“For now it is advantage to Europe and South America. The slot for African teams is very bad. Only five teams in a world cup that has almost 13 European teams. If Black lives really matter, we should show it by actions in every institution not only by kneeling down.

“We need to balance everything, no one must be considered superior than the other. Despite all the talent they have, but it would be absolutely impossible to go all the way to reach the World cup final with only five teams in the tournament, meanwhile other continents have more than five,” he added.

Osimhen Is Perfect Signing – Agostineli

Former Napoli coach, Andrea Agostinelli has insisted that the Serie A giants have made a very good signing in Victor Osimhen while also looking to see the forward’s impact in Italy.

Agostinelli, having seen Osimhen play several times also feels very strongly that the Nigerian will paint the Serie A red with goals following his summer transfer to
Napoli.

The transfer was finally completed on July 31 for €50m in cash, €10m in bonuses plus ownership of goalkeeper, Orestis Karnezis and three youth team players of the Partenopei.

It took longer because Osimhen fired his agent, Jean-Gerard Benoit Czajka after touring Napoli’s facilities, meeting President Aurelio De Laurentiis and coach Gennaro Gattuso.

Agostinelli spoke about the Suprr Eagles attacker on Radio Musica Television while on punditry duties for Saturday’s Champions League match which Napoli lost 3-1 to Barcelona.

“Victor Osimhen? I have seen him play several times and therefore, I believe I have the right competence to judge him. For me, Napoli made a very good signing,” Agostinelli said.

“The Nigerian is very strong and still has considerable room for improvement. Then, of course, we will have to see his impact in the Italian league”.

The 21-year-old has been in the form of his life since joining Lille from Sporting Charleroi of Belgium last year, netting 18 goals and making six assists in 38 games in all competitions.

TAG Industrial Watch: August 8, 2020

“The #covid-19 effect, while only increasing demand for industrial, has crept into the development side. Developers are building for the mass market of tenants with exit strategies in mind. While demand is present and with new development amenities and design features, leasing these #developed sites becomes much easier. However, it is important to remember that even with newer, evolutionary #industrial parks, an eye must be kept on vacancy. It is impractical to try to meet every changing tenant requirement and keep costs from skyrocketing. What remains clear is that industrial is the consistent asset class across all demographics and the changing #market.” -#adamabushagur

APC Pleads With Obiano To Reinstate Suspended Monarch

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Anambra chapter, has pleaded with Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra to reinstate Traditional Ruler Peter Uyanwa of Ukwulu community of Dunukofia Council Area of the state.

, suspended late July.

Uyanwa, who was suspended in July was also Chairman of Anambra Central Traditional Rulers Council.

Chief Basil Ejidike, Chairman of the APC in Anambra, made the call while addressing newsmen in Awka on Monday.

Ejidike accused the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) led government of meddlesomeness in the affairs of the traditional ruler institutions, saying that it was worrisome and unfortunate.

He said the development had political undertone which had the likelihood of strangulating the traditional institutions and making them to dance to the whims and caprices of the governor.

“As a people of culture, our traditional institutions and rulers are sacrosanct and should be treated as such, the recent imbroglio between the government and some traditional rulers in the state is a clear pointer to this fact.

“The suspension and withdrawal of certificate of recognition by the state government of the traditional ruler of Ukwulu, Igwe Peter Uyanwa, is another ploy to muscle down traditional rulers in Anambra.

“We are calling on Gov. Obiano to unconditionally reverse the suspension,” he said.

The APC expressed concern on why local government elections had not been held inAnambra in the past six years, saying it was having negative development effects on the state.

“Since assumption of office, Gov. Obiano has refused to conduct election into this very important stratum of government, ” he said.

He urged the governor to address the infrastructure decay in the state by building new amenities and maintaining new ones.

He also said the school system in the state needed better funding, noting that the administration had not been able to proffer solutions to the myriad economic challenges, and harness the economic potential of the state.

The APC chieftain urged people of the south eastern part of the country and Anambra in particular, to keep faith with President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as better time was still on the way.

He enumerated the construction of second Niger bridge rebuilding of Enugu-Onitsha expressway, face-lift of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, and reconstruction of Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway as part of the dividends of Buhari ‘s adminstration.

But Chief Nobert Obi, Chairman of APGA in Anambra, dismissed the accusations against Obiano as mere political talk.

Obi said Obiano was acting in the best interest of the state and the people of Anambra were happy with APGA government which had done and was still doing a lot for them.(NAN)

Group Lauds PDP Over Violence-Free Congress In Enugu

The Ebullient Youths for Good Governance (EYGG), an Enugu State-based political organisation, has described the seamless and rancour-free congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the state as laudable.

Founder of the group, Mr Victor Uchedienyi, gave the commendation in a statement, on Monday in Enugu.

Uchedienyi said the peaceful conduct of the congress was a clear evidence that the party faithful and gladiators regarded the unity of the party as paramount and above personal interests.

He said that those who expected the competitive nature of the congress to breed acrimony among the various interests, were disappointed.

The founder said that the PDP members had high expectations that the new executive members of the party would leverage on the successes recorded in the last four years to break new grounds.

He commended Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for providing the party executive with the enabling environment to discharge their duties.

“We appreciate the leadership style of Ugwuanyi, which we believe provided the leadership of the party with the enabling ground to perform.

“The peace, unity and progress that radiates in the party will not have been possible without the governor,” he said.

Uchedienyi charged the new leadership of the party to run an all-inclusive administration, adding that anything short of that would be counterproductive.

“We have implicit confidence in the ability of the party chairman, Mr Augustine Nnamani, and we call on all party faithful to accord him the support to succeed,” he said.

Uchedienyi urged the new leadership of the party to take such actions that would guarantee the growth of the party in the state.

“We pray God to give them the wisdom to take the party to greater heights and ensure that the right persona are brought into power to serve the people,” he said.

Recall that the PDP in Enugu State, on Aug. 8, 2020, conducted its state congress during which the Nnamani led executive was returned to serve for another four years. (NAN)
