Blasphemy: Court Sentences Man To Death By Hanging

An Upper Shari’a Court sitting in Kano on Monday, sentenced a 30-year-old man, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, to death by hanging after his conviction for blasphemy.

The convict , who resides at Sharifai Quarters of Kano Municipal, was dragged before the court by the police on a count charge of inciting religious creed contrary to section 382 (6) of Kano State Sharia Panel Code Law 2000.

The trial Judge, Khadi Muhammad Ali-Kani, said the offence was against the Islamic Law.

Ali-Kani, thereafter, sentenced the convict to death by hanging under section 382 (b) of Kano State State Sharia Panel Code Law 2000.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Aminu Yar-Goje, had earlier told the court that the convict committed the offence on Feb. 28.

Yar-Goje alleged that on the same date at about 80 p.m. and 11:50 p.m, the convict with the intention to hurt the feelings of Muslims faithful, made a blasphemous post via a WhatsApp group platform named: “Gidan Umma Abiha”.

“The convict made blasphemous and degrading audio remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” he said.

In his submission before the court, Sharif-Aminu pleaded guilty to the charge.

Meanwhile, the court had also sentenced a 17-year-old man, Umar Faruk, to 10-years imprisonment for alleged derogatory remarks on Allah, during a debate on March 4.

The convict, Faruk voluntarily pleaded guilty to the charge.

The trial Judge, Khadi Muhammad Ali-Kani, said the offence contravened Islamic Law, and sentenced the convict to 10-years imprisonment under section 382 (b) of Kano State Panel Code Law 2000.

The court also granted 30-day grace to appeal the judgment. (NAN)

Pay 4 Years Pension Arrears, Gratuities, Pensioners Beg Wike

Some pensioners in Rivers have appealed to the state government to pay fours years pension arrears and gratuities owed them to “help change our pitiable living conditions”.

The pensioners, in a statement by Mr Lucky Ati, their spokesman, regretted that some had not received anything since 2015.“We have written several letters to Gov. Nyesom Wike to no avail,” the pensioners fumed in a letter made available to newsmen on Monday in Port Harcourt.

They blamed the immediate past administration of the state for their plight.

“The administration preceding Wike enacted the contributory pension without preparations and plans for smooth take off; this has caused us untold hardship and even deaths,” they said.

The group, however, thanked Wike for repealing the pension law but pleaded with him to come to their aid by paying the arrears.(NAN)

Wike Seeks Assembly’s Approval For N18bn Loan

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers has requested for consent of the State House of Assembly to borrow N18bn from Access Bank for the construction of a flyover and two major internal roads in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The Speaker, Mr Ikunyi-Owaji Ibani, read the letter containing the governor’s request during plenary on Monday.

“The N18bn loan is expected to be channeled towards construction of a fourth flyover at the GRA Junction, dualisation of the popular Mummy B and Tombia internal roads,”Wike explained in his letter.

The governor pleaded with the lawmakers to accord an accelerated consideration to his request.

On the method for repayment, the governor said it would be serviced through Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state targeted at the 2020/2023 fiscal year.

The 25 members of the house voted in support of the governor’s request as they were all of the view that the fund when released would be used to further complement infrastructural development in the state.

In his response, the speaker stressed that the fund when accessed should be judiciously invested on the proposed projects. (NAN)

*DOMINION MANDATE DAILY DEVOTIONAL*

TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 2020

*COVENANT OF BROTHERHOOD*

*BIBLE READING: ACTS 2: 42-46; 9:1-5*

*"So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “Let the Lord require it at the hand of David’s enemies.” Now Jonathan again caused David to vow, because he loved him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul. 1 Samuel 20:16-17 (NKJV).*

We have established the meaning of a covenant and some of the benefits of the vertical dimension of a covenant relationship - between man and God. Today, we will discuss the horizontal dimension of covenant relationships – between brethren, because the path of progress and dominion require that you efficiently harness the synergy between man and God (the enforcer of such covenant relationships).

A covenant of brotherhood is a covenant relationship with a kingdom-minded person for the purpose of:
• Devotion
• Protection
• Business partnership.

Our key text highlights the soul-knitted covenant relationship between the house of Jonathan and the house of David (1Samuel 18:3). Jonathan, was the heir apparent to the throne of Israel, and he loved David and cut a covenant with him; the covenant inspired Jonathan to give gifts to David – *“Jonathan stripped himself of the outer robe that he was wearing and gave it to David, with his armour, including his sword, his bow, and his belt (1Samuel 18:4 AMP).*

The brotherhood between Jonathan and David exceeded the love of a man for a woman as expressed by David - *“I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; you have been a good friend to me. Your love toward me was more wonderful than the love of women (2 Samuel 1:26 AMP).*

A covenant of brotherhood will go to any length to ensure that the other party is out of harm’s way– *“Therefore show kindness to your servant, because you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you. But if there is iniquity (guilt) in me, kill me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father [to be killed]?” Jonathan said, “Far be it from [happening to] you! In fact, if I indeed learn that my father has decided to harm you, would I not tell you about it?” 1 Samuel 20:8-10 (AMP).*

The advantages of a covenant of brotherhood transcends the parties, their offsprings also benefit from the covenant as evidenced by King David when he honored Mephibosheth – *“David said to him, “Do not be afraid, for I will certainly show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul; and you shall always eat at my table.” Again Mephibosheth lay himself face down and said, “What is your servant, that you would be concerned for a dead dog like me?” 2 Samuel 9:7-8(AMP).*

Key tenets the parties to a covenant of brotherhood must exhibit for the covenant to deliver results are Honour, Love, and the Fear of God and His representative authority as provided in 1Peter 2:17 – *“Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. (NKJV).* In your quest to take your sphere of influence for God, endeavor to engage in covenant relationships and you will be glad you did.

*PRAYER POINT
Father, I thank You for the gift of covenant relationships. Anoint my eyes to see and connect with strategic kingdom partners to enable me fulfill Your will for Your glory in Jesus name.
