Ghana Embargos Renewable Energy Deal Signing
The government of Ghana has suspended the signing of renewable energy deal due to what it described as “unnecessary deals by previous administration.” Joy News reported that Ghana’s Energy Minister, Peter Amewu, has placed a moratorium on the signing of new renewable energy agreements.

The report said Ghanaian government discovered that the previous administration signed too many unnecessary deals. Addressing the media after Parliament proceedings Thursday, Mr Amewu said the deals signed by the previous government were at a higher price, therefore, government needs to re-negotiate to reduce the amount.

“The renewable energy that was signed between 2015 and 2016, was 2,665 megawatts at a price of 31 cents per kilowatts. And they were completely unnecessary because people [citizens] were going to pay higher.

But we [government] do not want to entertain this higher renewable that is why we have placed a complete moratorium on the renewable,” he said.

He further stated that the Akufo-Addo administration supports the use of renewable energy, however, it would prefer citizens to pay a fair price for the commodity. It isn’t that we [government] are anti-renewable.

Today, President Akufo-Addo has directed that the Jubilee House operate on renewable and it is 70 per cent complete.”

But responding to this, the former Energy Minister, Ernest Kofi Buah was quoted as saying that the agreements signed then were by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). He insisted that no burden has been placed on government.

PSG Leaves It Late To Stun Atalanta To S/F Berth

Paris Saint-Germain produced a stunning late turnaround to beat Atalanta 2-1 and reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 1995.

Mario Pasalic’s first-half strike had looked set to settle a contest in Lisbon that will be remembered for a series of first-half misses from Neymar, the worst of which came when through on goal in the third minute.

Thomas Tuchel’s side dominated large spells but looked short of sharpness after playing few games in the past five months, even following Kylian Mbappe’s introduction from the bench after he shook off an ankle injury.

However, Marquinhos prodded home a fortuitous equaliser in the 90th minute before Neymar and Mbappe combined to set up Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to become the unlikely hero and break Atalanta hearts.

Keylor Navas saved from Alejandro Gomez but it was Neymar who missed the best of the early chances, combining brilliantly with Mauro Icardi only to skew a finish well wide with the goal at his mercy.

Navas then produced two outstanding stops to keep out headers from Hans Hateboer and Mattia Caldara, although the latter had been in an offside position.

Neymar created another opening only to fail to take advantage, but Pasalic made no mistake 27 minutes in, curling a first-time finish past Navas after the ball deflected into his path off Duvan Zapata.

Neymar had become the only PSG player looking likely to score and yet was the reason they went into half-time behind, the Brazil star dancing his way through and rifling wide and then blazing over after an errant backpass from Hateboer.

Berat Djmisiti flashed a shot wide following a set-piece before Tuchel turned to Mbappe with just over half an hour remaining and then threw on Julian Draxler as desperation grew.

Mbappe drilled a shot straight at Marco Sportiello and Neymar did likewise after another mazy run, and a brilliant challenge from Jose Luis Palomino denied Mbappe from close range.

Just as Atalanta seemed to have done enough for another famous victory, Neymar turned a deep cross into Marquinhos’ path and he finished via the knee of Caldara.

And 149 seconds later, Neymar released Mbappe into the area, the France striker drilled the ball across the box and Choupo-Moting slid in to send PSG into the last four to face RB Leipzig or Atletico Madrid.

What does it mean? Tuchel saved by magic touch of an ex-Potter

League success was not enough to spare Maurizio Sarri the sack after Juventus were knocked out by Lyon, and Tuchel was likely facing a similar fate as the clock struck the 90th minute.

Credit must be given to his players, who battled on until those crucial late chances came – and few would have thought it would be former Stoke City man Choupo-Moting to provide the killer touch.

Atalanta will feel deflated, having played so well throughout the season during their first visit to Europe’s top table.

Neymar illuminates…

In the first half in particular, Neymar was dazzling at times. Atalanta had a set-up designed to limit his room to operate and yet he waltzed through challenges as though in a video game.

He had 112 touches in the match, created four chances, contested 33 duels and attempted 50 passes in the Atalanta half – and played a key role in both goals.

…and infuriates

Those misses! Article continues below

Neymar’s wayward first-half finishing looked set to go down in infamy – the first one had Mbappe watching on in disbelief – and PSG almost paid the price.

What’s next?

PSG go through to face either RB Leipzig or Atletico Madrid next Tuesday.

World Youth Day: Abakiliki Residents Seek More Skill Acquisition For Youth

Some parents and youths in Abakaliki, Ebonyi capital have urged governments at all levels to enliven the youth with skills as a way of tackling crime in the society.

They made the call while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Wednesday in reaction to the World Youth Day celebration.

According to them, skills acquisition will also support the moves by all tiers of government to ensure meaningful engagement of the youths.

One of them, Sunday Nweke, a youth and Shoemaker commended the setting aside of a day to celebrate the youth.

He said that such a day should be used to re-orientate the youth on the need for hard work and self-reliance, saying, “hard work reduces crime in the society”

“ I refused to be idle, I learnt to make shoes, doing so, has helped me and my family so much. We need to collectively preach the gospel of self-reliance.

“The government should lead this crusade, the mindsets of the youths have to be properly re-oriented and developed,” he said.

Another youth, Okoafor Ano, a Carpentry apprentice told NAN that engaging the youths in skills acquisition would create empowerment opportunities for them.

“When people are busy with something, they stay committed to it and stay away from crime and violence,” he said.

Also speaking to NAN, Mrs Joy Nwachukwu, a parent, told NAN that youth empowerment was necessary for nation building and economic growth.

She said that the need for skills acquisition had become crucial with emergence of Coronavirus, saying,“ the economic impact of the pandemic is harsh on the younger population and something has to be done urgently,”.

In his remarks, Mr Charles Akpuenika, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Youth and Sports said the state was committed to youth empowerment.

“We have always preached that youths should avoid crime and violence, we need all support and efforts to develop our minds,” he said.

NAN reports that the theme for this year’s edition of the `World Youth Day is “Youth Engagement for Global Action”. (NAN)

The Cross River Government on Wednesday said it has successfully executed 838 micro projects across the state through the Community and Social Development Project (CSDP) in collaboration with the World Bank between 2009 till date.

Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River disclosed this in Calabar during a one day workshop on presentation of CSDP outcome evaluation result to stakeholders in Cross River.

Ayade, who was represented by Dr Inyang Asibong, Commissioner for International Development Cooperation, said the CSDP has been the lead agency in rural development in the state.

Ayade said that his administration was focused on industrialisation, hence the need to provide micro projects and critical infrastructure for rural dwellers in the state.

According to him, the micro projects were executed in over 300 communities across the 18 local government areas of the state.

He mentioned the areas of intervention to include provision of water, healthcare centres, education, rural electrification, socio-economic, environment, transport and community housing.

“We believe that if these projects are sustained, the industrialisation agenda of this administration will be achieved.

“Cross River as a state is committed to sustaining the gains of the project because it is meant to improve social and natural resources infrastructure services in a sustainable manner,” he said.

Speaking, Mr Fidel Udie, the Acting General Manager of Cross River Committee and Social Development Agency, explained that the workshop was to ascertain the outcome of benefitting communities over the years through the CSDP project.

Udie explained that the vision of the agency was “to be an agency championing sustainable infrastructural development of poor communities and vulnerable groups in the state”.

On his part, the Chairman of Board of the Agency, Mr Tony Ikpeme, said that the workshop was to help them assess the beauty of the impact of infrastructure carried out across the state.

Ikpeme, who disclosed that the project will have new phases going forward, said that the rural dwellers were the direct beneficiaries of the projects.

In his goodwill message, Mr Fabowale Gbadebo, the Head of Operations, Federal Project Support of CSDP, commended the state government for sustaining the execution of the projects to improve the social economic and health status of rural dwellers. (NAN)

Youth Day: Anambra Govt Empowers 700 Youths In 2 Years – Commissioner

The Anambra Government says it has trained and empowered no fewer than 700 youths in two years.

Prof Theresa Obiekezie, State Commissioner for Youth Entrepreneurship and Creative Economy, said this at a pre-World Youth Day celebration media briefing in Awka on Wednesday.

Obiekezie explained that the youths were trained under the state’s “One Youth, One Skill” programme from November 2018 till date.

She said that Gov. Willie Obiano had demonstrated that it was the most youth friendly government with the high number of youths in his administration with policies designed to empower youths.

She said the youths were trained in various skills including, confectioneries, event management, computer management/software application, tilling, screeding, interlocking, cosmetology and solar installation.

Obiekezie said that the trainings were part of efforts by the administration to ensure that youths were equipped with skills and knowledge toward self reliance as well as socioeconomic development of the state.

“I want to reassure all, that Anambra government is unflinchingly committed to making sure that youths of Anambra are gainfully engaged in the political and socio-economic development of the state.

“Gov. Obiano since the inception of his office has been a youth friendly governor and has involved youths of Anambra in the politics of the state,” she said.

Obiekezie called on youths to shun cultism, fraudulent activities and political thuggery and channel their lives to positive ventures.

She said the theme for the 2020 celebration, “Youth Engagement for Global Action” was apt as it meant that the world had recognised youths as catalysts for change.

“This year’s celebration is unique because of the grievous impact COVID-19 has had on jobs and education sector.

“The flexibility of youths and adaptability brought about changes in the way of living even in the education sector,” the commissioner stressed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there would be an interactive forum between Anambra government and youths on Thursday, while a symposium including lecture series, comedy would hold on Aug. 14 to end the event. (NAN)
