FG To Encourage More Private/Public Partnership To Boost Domestic Gas.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, has said that more private and public sector collaboration will be encouraged as Nigeria steps up effort to realise its target of boosting domestic gas utilisation.

Sylva made this known on the Twitter account of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Friday while inaugurating the Rainoil Limited Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) facility with a tank capacity of 8,000MT in Ijegun, Lagos.

He said the facility which also has about 40 LPG trucks would help to deepen cooking gas penetration in the country in line with the vision of the Federal Government.

Sylva said Rainoil Limited had strengthened its partnership with the government in gas utilisation and development of the gas sector in the country with the establishment of the facility.

He said : “Rainoil is really working in tandem with the vision of the federal government, in making gas a preferred fuel in the country.

” I am excited at what I am seeing here today. Everything can speak for itself. As you can see, energy is very important in the global economy and I am glad that Nigerian’s are playing key roles in the oil and gas industry.”

Sylva noted that Rainoil’s investment in gas development aligns with President Buhari’s agenda in the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP), adding that the government has declared 2020 as “The Year of Gas”.

He said Nigeria had sufficient gas reserves to meet its energy needs as the government intensifies efforts to deepen LPG penetration and attain five million MT of LPG consumption by 2022.

Anambra 2021: PDP Guber Aspirant Promises To Reposition Education Sector

A frontline gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2021 Anambra governorship election, Hon. Chris Azubogu, has promised to reposition educational sector by collaborating with members of the academia in developing key transformational policies.

Azubogu, member representing Nnewi North and South and Ekwusigo federal constituency in the House of Representatives, decried the poor conditions of educational institutions, while expressing optimism that if elected, he would reshape both state and federal owned institutions in the state.

He made this promise over a zoom meeting, when he interacted with members of Academic Frontiers Initiative (AFI), a group of lecturers in tertiary institutions committed to supporting good governance in Anambra state and Nigeria, at large.

According to him, “I have years of experience in legislation. I’ll use this wealth of experience to drive good legislation that will reshape educational institutions and other sectors.

“Good legislation is key drivers of democracy. I will use my knowledge to enact appropriate laws to drive the process. I will also be working with the academia and other stakeholders in order to realise them”.

He further said he would be paying attention to the technical and vocational skills at the secondary school level to ensure that students, who could not continue with university education, learn requisite skills to be self reliant.

Emphasising the role of research and development in tertiary institutions, the PDP aspirant assured that he would support academia to ensure the outcome of their researches are put to use.

Azubogu further tasked academia to focus on the development of the curriculum content to meet the demands of 21st century labour force. This, he said, would give competitive edge to students among their peers within and outside the country.

Assuring that he would set the ground running immediately elected, the house member remarked that he would attract investors, as well as source funds to develop the state.

Azubogu noted that he has had commendable track records in various offices he previously held.

“I’ll be a servant leader, and I shall be accountable. No one will be left behind because, I will be involving everyone in my administration. I, therefore, seek your collaboration because we will achieve a lot when we synergise,” he said.

Speaking on the state of local government in the state, he said he has developed a blueprint to get the local governments working again, stressing that it is only through local governments that governance is brought to the grassroots. He said he would conduct local government elections in the state.

Earlier, on behalf of the group, the national president, Dr. Chinedu Onyeizugbe, thanked Azubogu for honouring the zoom meeting, while remarking the non partisanship of the group. He said it was high time lecturers began to interrogate governance in Nigeria as against what was previously obtained.

Ex- Delta Speaker Decries Marginalisation Of Ndokwa Area By Oil Firms

Former speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Mr Olisa Imegwu, on Tuesday, sought the update of the oil production quantum of Ndokwa nation, saying that Ndokwa nation was yet to benefit in the national scheme of things.

Imegwu, who spoke to journalists in Asaba, said Ndokwa nation was ranked fifth in oil Production Quantum in 2008 and had progressed to third ranking in 2009 when its production quantum shut up from 7million to 9million, yet, the production of 2008 was still being used to date, stressing that Ndokwa must be developed to a standard.

He said, “We have a lot of constraints in Ndokwa nation and all that I have said, evidently, amounted to how Ndokwa nation has been marginalised, particularly, Ndokwa East that has been marginalised in terms of Projects distribution. It’s really unfortunate, but we must purse our goals objectively to be part of development. We are saddened that Ndokwa nation with all we have is still very far from development”.

Imegwu said that between 2007 and 2011 the total value of projects awarded was N134billion in just one sub head of three sub heads under the Federal Ministry of Works, adding that on distribution, Delta South senatorial district got N66 billion, Delta Central got N43 billion, Delta North got N25 billion, Oshimili/Aniocha got N18 billion awarded contracts, Ika was allocated N4 billion while Ndokwa Federal Constituency was allocated a paltry sum of N3 billion contracts.

He expressed the dismay of the people of Ndokwa nation, particularly known to have the highest gas reserve in West Africa, to have been schemed out of effective development plan commensurate with its contribution to the nation’s economy, and admonished Ndokwa youths to use all constitutional means available to make an updated official oil Production Quantum for Ndokwa nation possible, saying that such efforts would attract more Projects.

The former speaker said that the terrain of Ndokwa East which is prone to flood, deserved more Projects distribution, especially on dredging of the River Niger to curb the yearly occurrence of flooding, and lamented the absence of tertiary institution in Ndokwa nation\

Enugu Assembly Passes Iwollo Polytechnic Amendment Bill

Enugu State House of Assembly has passed the amended Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo, law No. 1, 2015, as House bill No. 6, 2020.
The law now empowers the polytechnic, situated at Iwollo in Ezeagu Local Government of the State to have three campuses in the three senatorial districts of the state.

Speaking on the merit of the amended law on the floor of the House in Enugu on Thursday the Leader of the Assembly, Mr Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, said the multi-campus of the institution would bring about development to the rural areas.

Ezeugwu said apart from developing the rural communities where the campuses would be cited, it would create employment as well as encourage the youth in the rural areas to have access to quality higher education.
“The campuses will bring development in the new places the schools will be cited. It will give the people the opportunity to advance academically.

It will create employment for the people,” he said.
Ezeugwu expressed hope that work would be accelerated to enable them to take off for the new academic session.
Other members who contributed to the debate agreed with Ezeugwu that the multi campuses would bring rapid development to the rural dwellers where they are cited.

According to the Deputy Speaker, Mr Uche Ugwu, citing a higher institution in a given area brings about development, noting that Nsukka is what it is today because the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, is cited there.
“I move that the polytechnic be made a multi-campus. It will open the rural areas.

“Schools are one of the things that bring about opening of the rural areas. You can agree with me that Nsukka is what it is today because of the UNN,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the Assembly which resumed with zeal after the long recess occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic, passed four other bills.

They are: a bill for a law to amend the School of Public Health Nursing and Health Technology, Nsukka, Law No. 4, HB no. 7, 2020.

The House also passed the bill that sought the amendment of School of Health Technology, Oji River, Law 4, HB. 8, 2020; and the bill that sought the amendment of Survey Law Cap. 147 Revised Enugu State Law 2004, HB no. 9, 2020.

Equally passed was a consideration of a report on a bill for a law to repeal the State Agency for Community and Social Development Law No. 18, 2020 and to provide for Enactment of Enugu State Agency for Community and Social Development and for Other Connected Purposes, HB no. 2, 2020.
The new amendment changed the status of the schools of health to colleges of Health Technology.

The upgrading of the schools to colleges is to enable the institutions to access TETFUND projects.
It will also enable the colleges to award diplomas that authorise the students to go for national youth service like other universities, colleges and polytechnics.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Chief Edward Ubosi, thanked his colleagues for the wonderful job they did to ensure that the bill saw the light of the day. (NAN)

Adam’s Late Strike Sends ATM Out Of Champions League

United States international Tyler Adams scored an 88th-minute winner to help RB Leipzig beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 and advance to the Champions League semifinals on Thursday.

The dramatic late win marks the first time the Bundesliga club has reached the last four of the competition and sets up a clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday for a spot in the final.

Leipzig struck first five minutes after the break when Dani Olmo finished off a nearly 20-pass move with a cushioned header past a helpless Jan Oblak after finding a pocket of space between four Atletico defenders just outside the six-yard box.

Joao Felix changed the complexion of the game upon his arrival from the bench in the 58th minute, teasing Leipzig defenders with delightful dribbling and proving a dangerous threat down the left side. And he was rewarded for his work 13 minutes later when he won and scored a penalty after bursting onto a fine layoff and suffering a Lukas Klostermann foul in the box — the former Benfica man then calmly beating Peter Gulacsi from the spot to even the score at 1-1.

But Leipzig were not deterred and struck back on the break through substitute Adams a minute before time when the American midfielder ran onto a pass at the top of the box and fired a low shot that took a heavy deflection and left Oblak stranded as the ball bounced into the goal.

The goal made Adams the first U.S. International to score in the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals or later.

Abia Needs Competent Leaders, Not Zoning — Otti

Dr Alex Otti, a former Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2015 and 2019 in Abia, says the state needs a competent leader that will propel positve development and not zoning and power shift.

Otti said this on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of the state, while speaking on his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said that the depth of socio-economic rot and undervelopment of Abia placed the need for competent leaders to take over the reign of power above zoning.

“I have refused to discuss the issue of zoning because I believe that what Abia needs is skill, competence, capacity and merit.
“That you are from one place or another does not make you. What makes you is what is inside of you.

“I believe that Abia, particularly at this time, is looking for competent leadership. So let’s discuss competence.
“Where you were born, brought up or live is accidental happenstance. What matters is what have you done. What track record do you have to show.

“All other ones about where one was born or lives are distractive. It amounts to leaving the issues to discuss irrelevancies and nonentities,” Otti said.
The former banker-turned politician said that he decided to join APC because it had a preponderance of men and women desirous to bring about positive change in Abia.

“The whole idea about my joining APC is for us to come together, those of us who are opposed to the rot in Abia.
“We need to come together to change the things that are going on.
“We need to pool together to ensure that we change the system and get things going in the state.
“You may not like to hear it but it has been proven that Abia is the worst state in Nigeria in terms of infrastructure and health facilities, education and environmental sanitation.
“So there is no way we can continue this way for the sake of our children and children’s children.

“We need to do things differently, if the state must move forward,” the former Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Diamond Bank said.

Otti, who registered his membership in Ehi-na-Uguru APC Ward 5 in Isialangwa South LGA, said that he would publicly declare for APC on Friday.

He later dumped PDP for APGA, where he contested the governorship polls in 2015 and 2019. (NAN)

Anambra Monarchs Protest Suspension, Say “Nothing Warrants It”

The suspended traditional rulers of Anambra on Thursday said that they did not commit any wrong to warrant their suspension by the state government.

The monarchs stated this at a joint press conference addressed by Chief Chioke Nwankwo, the Igwe of Nawfia, in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the traditional rulers were suspended on Tuesday for allegedly travelling out of the state without government’s approval. The 12 monarchs had travelled to Abuja for an “official engagement”.

A letter announcing the suspension of the 12 traditional rulers for one year, was signed by Mr Greg Obi, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs. It said that the action was taken because they travelled outside the state “without government’s approval”.

But Nwankwo, at the press conference, said that the monarchs travelled to Abuia to thank President Mohammadu Buhari for the good things he had been doing for the South-East Zone.“The visit was to thank Buhari for the appointment of notable Igbo sons and daughters into important positions since he became President.

“Is this an offence? The Second Niger bridge had been presented as an impossible task by previous administrations, but it is now becoming a reality under his watch as it is nearing completion. We appreciated him for this.

“We know that the project is very dear to our hearts because it is key to boosting business activities between the people of the South East and the entire country. Where did we go wrong here?“The Enugu-Onitsha expressway that the Buhari administration is rehabilitating is another magnificent reason why we went to thank the President.

“The Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway rehabilitation that the government has also embarked on, is another reason why we took the step. These projects have been pipe dreams and had been elusive during past administrations.

“They have given the entire South Eastern people concerns. As Royal Fathers who are custodians of all our heritage, we felt that it was incumbent on us to express our appreciation to the president and to urge him to do more for the zone.

“Where have we committed a crime in these laudable efforts? On what ground is the Igwe and the state government angry with us?”Nwankwo said that what the suspended traditional rulers had done was in exercise of their fundamental human rights, emphasising that “no one can take that from us”.

“Freedom of speech, freedom of movements are all enshrined in our constitution and grand norms. Any attempt against these amounts to muzzling the traditional institutions and we cannot accept that.”He described the state government’s claim that the suspended traditional rulers did not obtain permission from the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs before the visit as “a lame reason”.

“Is there anywhere in our laws where freedom of movements by anyone is restricted within or outside the country?,” he asked.

Nwankwo said that the Anambra government had no constitution of its own and there was no known law in the country stopping traditional rulers from having free movement.

“We are not ashamed to be associated with the great Prince Arthur Eze, who has been a major succour to the poor masses of Anambra and has emancipated many of them from economic bondage.

“As traditional rulers, if we come together to visit the President or associate with Prince Eze, is it an offense? There is no known law against this.”He said that what the Anambra state governor had done was an attempt to “intimidate the traditional institution”.(NAN)

The Commissioner of Police, Cross River state Command, Mr Abdulkadir Jimoh, has paraded a man, Okon Asuquo, suspected to have been among people who butchered and ate those they captured during a communal war at Odupkani local government area of Cross River state.

Also paraded were six suspected kidnappers said to have been involved in the kidnap of Mrs Ekwele Agube, wife of Hon. Justice Ignatius Agube of the Appeal Court, Enugu.

Mr Jimoh, who paraded the suspects with 32 others, Thursday, in Calabar, said “On 31st July, 2020, at about 1640 Hrs, upon a tip off, one Okon Asuquo, AKA Akon, ‘m’ age 31 years was arrested while going to buy AK 47 ammunition in preparation for a communal war. Items recovered are assorted charms.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to belonging to Klans (KK) confraternity cult and equally admitted committing various heinous crimes. He will be charged to court after this exercise.”

The Commissioner also showed to Journalists a video footage of how human beings were cut into little pieces, after they had murdered them, with the alleged involvement of Asuquo. He said the suspect and those in the video footage, who are now at large, may have cooked and eaten the victim.

On the six kidnappers, Mr Jimoh said “Sequel to the kidnapping of Mrs Agube and killing of her aide, Mrs Glory Akpama, Intelligence Response Team Operatives attached to the FBI were deployed to assist the Commissioner of Police in Cross River state.

“The Team arrested six of the notorious robbers including the gang leader and recovered two locally made pistols. The suspects confessed to the crime and their involvement in the kidnapping of many other citizens in the state.”

He urged members of the public to join hands with the police to fight the crimes and criminalities in the state.

In an interview, the suspected murderer, Asuquo, said he was present when the persons in the video footage were butchered but that he did not take part in the killing, but did not explain what happened to the dismembered body parts.

“Idim Ndom and Ekpene people invaded and burnt down our community, Mbiabo Ederi, on April 1, 2020. They killed my mother who was a teacher and we ran away to Isong Inyang Ikoneto community. Our assailant vowed that anytime we plan to bury my mother in our village, they will kill us all.

“I was in Isong Inyang Ikoneto community when they told me that youths have caught some of those people who attacked and destroyed our village so I only went to see them where they were kept but they were already killed before I arrived. I did not take part in the killing but I was there when they cut them into pieces. It was the people of Isong Inyang Ikoneto who killed those guys you watched in the video, I am from Mbiabo Ederi,” he said.

On his part, the kidnap gang leader, Nse Bassey, alias the Lion, told newsmen that his team got the information about Mrs Agube from a friend who told them to kidnap the Judge’s wife.

He said the boat driver who conveyed their victim to the creeks was given N100,000 while their informant was given N70,000. He was reluctant to mention how much was paid as ransom before Mrs Agube, who spent 14 days in captivity, was released.
