Intelligence Operatives Arrest Ex-Pension Boss, Maina In Niger Republic

Maina is facing money laundering charges to the tune of about N2 billion, part of which he allegedly used to procure land properties in Abuja.

Operatives of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency and the Niger Republic Intelligence Service have arrested a former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, who is facing a 12-count money laundering charge levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Intelligence sources confirmed that Maina was arrested on Monday evening somewhere in the Niger Republic and would be brought into Nigeria Tuesday or Wednesday.

Abdulrasheed Maina
"He has been arrested in the Niger Republic, but we have not yet brought him into Nigeria. He is going to be brought in Tuesday or Wednesday. But he has been arrested," one of the sources said.

According to the EFCC, Maina is facing money laundering charges to the tune of about N2 billion, part of which he allegedly used to procure land properties in Abuja.

He has fled trial and his whereabouts unknown since his prosecution resumed on September 29, 2020, a development which made Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court order Senator Ali Ndume's remand last Monday.

Ndume was Maina's surety. The Federal High Court in Abuja only on Friday granted bail to the Borno South Senator.

Maina last attended court on July 2, 2020, during the cross-examination of the sixth prosecution witness by his legal team.

He failed to show up in court since September 29, 2020, prompting the judge, Justice Okon Abang, to adjudge him as having jumped bail in a ruling delivered on November 18, 2020.

The judge, in the November 18 ruling, revoked the bail earlier granted him. He ordered his arrest and directed that his trial would proceed in his absence.

There was also no lawyer to represent him or his company charged along with him as his second defendant.

N2.5bn Fraud: You Have Case To Answer, Appeal Court Tells Suspended NBC Boss, Kawu

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission had charged Kawu, Lucky Omoluwa (late Chairman of Pinnacle Communications Ltd) and Dipo Onifade, Chief Operating Officer of the same company, before Justice Folashade Ogunbanjo-Giwa, on a 12-count charge of money laundering.

BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKDEC 01, 2020
The Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja, has dismissed an appeal filed by the suspended Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Dr Moddibbo Kawu, challenging the decision of the Federal High Court, to dismiss the no-case submission he filed at the lower court.

The suspended NBC boss and his co-accused then approached the appellate court to reverse the judgment of the Federal High Court.

The appellate dismissed the no-case submission filed by Kawu and his co-accused and held that they had an explanation to give when he elected to facilitate the payment of N2.5bn to a private company against the provisions of Section 13 of the government white paper guiding the operation of the Digital Switch-Over Programme.

Justice Ogunbanjo-Giwa, while delivering her ruling in February 2020, held that the ICPC had established a prima facie against Kawu, Onifade and Pinnacle Communications Limited, and ruled that they have a case to answer.

The anti-graft agency said Kawu and others allegedly paid the sum of N2.5 billion seed grant for the Digital Switch-Over project to Pinnacle Communications Limited.

ICPC arraigned them for abuse of office, money laundering and misleading a public officer with the intent to defraud the Federal Government, in contravention of Sections 26 (1) (c) and punishable under the Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

Kawu, through his counsel, A. U. Mustapha, had filed a no-case submission in December 2019 at the close of the prosecution’s case, praying the court to discharge and acquaint him of the charge brought against him by ICPC.

Protest Rocks Anambra Government House And State House Of Assembly Over Imposition Of Leaders In Ndiowu

Hundreds of people from Ndiowu, had on Monday 30th November, 2020, stormed Anambra State Government House, to protest over imposition of Caretaker Committee Chairman acting as President-General of Ndiowu Town Union, allegedly cancellation of election, embezzlements of 20million community choose your project initiative fund and uncompleted roads.

They called on government to install those elected on 26th December, 2019 or order for a fresh election in Ndiowu to avoid a breakdown of law and order in the town. They asked those they described as cabals and clog on their wheel of Ndiowu progress, to leave the community alone.

The protesters bore placards with inscriptions: “Ndiowu is not for sale” “We need peace in Ndiowu, “Ndiowu must be free,” “caretaker is unconstitutional and illegal,” “Help us oh ye government, “Stop corruption in our dear community,” “No more avenue for criminality in our community again,” “the will of the people should be allowed to prevail,” “say no to cabal” and “Ndiowu is APGA goverment. Don’t see why APGA candidate will the destroy the love of APGA in our community.”

The protest which started by 10:10am, comprises youths, married men and women, and the elderly.

Addressing the protesters, Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, said that their demands are “largely within the mandate of Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Town Union Affairs. So, I will minute it to the Commissioner and also bring it to the attention of the Governor. I will ask them to deal with it speedily.

The youth leader of the community, Mgbemene Obiora, said the protest is over the problems they have in their community. He decried the level of humiliation they face in the community, ranging from cancellation of election by certain cabals in the community to embezzlement of community project funds.

“Any money given to Ndiowu is unaccounted for. These things had been happening since 2014. We conducted election in 2016, no outcome, in 2017 no outcome, 2019 again on 26th December, no outcome. That is why we come to let government know.”

Ikechukwu Orji, a 75year old elderly man, called on State Government to come to their rescue, “They should know what is happening in our community.”

Mrs Obiageli Nwafor, who introduced herself as the Secretary of Umuada Ndiowu, expressed her displeasure on the happenings in the community. According to her, “We contribute money to build Orie Ebeagwu but they told Governor that the market was built with the 20million Community Choose Your Project be Initiative fund.”

“We don’t want a Caretaker again. Caretaker don’t last for 8years. Caretaker only stays for 3months. Why is there election in other communities except in Ndiowu?” she asked.

Also speaking, a member of the Caretaker Committee, Onyeka Okeke, who was part of the protest, admitted they have stayed for over 5years. “In fact, we’ve been there for over 5years. The Caretaker Committee Chairman and his cohorts have been siphoning the fund over a long time. So, our people are tired of that kind of government. We had government by proxy. What they are doing is not in tune with what people want.

Most times, they sideline us but will tell the press that the whole Ndiowu agreed on it. “Secondly, the Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mr Abadnego Okoli, gave a newspaper publication that five hundred job slots were given to Ndiowu and that he shared it amongst the whole nine villages in Ndiowu. But some of the chairmen here can attest to the fact that such a thing never happened. So, we want to understand where and who he gave those slots,” he stated.

“But I deemed it necessary to fix mine in your education because all of you are upcoming leaders.

“You are those that have the future, you are among those that would stand taller than us in no distant time, if you really chart your future properly.

“This is why we have deemed it necessary to map out some money from the budgetary allocation of N50 million to give some education grant to most of you.

“We did the part one of this scheme in December where we gave about 850 secondary school students grants to assist them in their certificate examinations.

“We have received calls from most of those beneficiaries telling us that they did well in their examinations,” Ogah said.

Senior pastor of Awaiting The Second Coming Of Christ Ministry, Adewale Giwa has said that even President Muhammadu Buhari is not safe at the Presidential Villa going by the breakdown of security in the country.

He also said that Buhari’s high-handedness has caused a major setback to national advancement.

Giwa, in a statement to DAILY POST on Tuesday said Nigerians had chosen their destiny by allowing president Buhari to rule the country for another four years.

The cleric, however, urged Nigerians to stay strong.

He declared: “It’s unfortunate that we have a president who doesn’t listen to the yearnings of his people.

“If the wife of Ondo state Chief of staff could be kidnapped easily, who knows who is next? As of now, God is our security.

“Even Buhari is not safe in Aso rock because the citizens are not happy.”
