Teacher rapes 13-year-old girl to death in Bayelsa
A 30-year-old teacher, Promise Sylvanus Ogun, of Government Secondary School, Toroegbeni, in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has allegedly raped a minor to death.
The suspect was said to have owned up to the rape before family and compound chiefs and allegedly paid the deceased hospital bill at a private hospital in Opolo area of Yenagoa, the state capital.
However, the suspect allegedly made a U-turn by accusing the father of the deceased of a threat to life before the Area Command of the Police in Sagbama.
It was gathered that the civil society organisation and girl child advocacy groups in the state including the Girl Response Initiative Team set up by the wife of the state Governor, Mrs. Gloria Diri, and the DO Foundation led by Dise Ogbise-Erhisere are planning to visit the State Police Commissioner, Mike Okoli, to demand proper investigation and arrest of the alleged rapist.
The civil society groups are angered by the fact that instead of investigating the alleged rape and death of the 13-year-old girl, they are busy summoning the deceased father over the trumped-up charges of the alleged threat to life by the accused teacher.
Investigation revealed that the deceased teenager, sometime in March 2020 was waylaid and molested by the waterside in Ogoibiri community of Sagbama where she had gone to take her bath and allegedly raped twice by the suspected teacher.
The Father of the deceased, Pinaowei Gana, said the girl did not report she was violated and raped by them.
He stated: ”She kept it to herself and was bleeding little by little. About two months later, we noticed some strange smell and she complained of serious sickness. We took her to a local massage therapist and we were told that the child had been defiled and infected.
“We took her back to tell my landlord and some elders about her defilement. She confirmed it was the teacher. The teacher pleaded that I should not go to the police and that he would pay for her treatment and settle with the family.
“He (the teacher) took her to a private hospital in Opolo where he was admitted for over a week. But he came back and discharged the child without the doctor’s advice and dumped her with me. Two days later, the girl died.”
The deceased father also confirmed that after he raised the alarm over the death of her child, the suspect, and his entire family moved out of the area.
He, however, said the suspect’s father deposited the corpse of the girl at the mortuary along the Amassoma road pending the resolution of the conflict.
Speaking on the development, the Founder of the DO Foundation, Dise Ogbise-Erhisere, confirmed that the deceased died from complications of rape, insisting that the girl child advocacy groups were planning to visit the Commissioner of Police over the matter.
She stated: “A crime has been committed and the culprit has admitted to the crime. They need to ensure he is arrested and prosecuted.
“On the reported petition of the alleged pedophile, the police need to investigate and determine who is culpable and where the corpse of the defiled and deceased child is.”
She called on the police authorities to transfer the case from Area Command in Sagbama to the State Police Headquarters in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Joi Nunieh Wins 'Public Servant Of The Year' Award (Photos)
Immediate past acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Gbene (Dr) Joi Nunieh, has emerged 'Public Servant of the Year' in the 2020 Igbere TV Leadership Excellence Awards.
The prestigious Leadership Excellence Awards, recognises and honours the outstanding impacts of leaders across several sectors and industries in Nigeria. The most anticipated 2020 'lockdown edition' is slated for December 10 at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers in Abuja.
The Award is endorsed by the African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOCC), an advisory body of the African Union (AU) designed to give civil society organizations (CSOs) a voice within the AU institutions and decision-making processes.
Nunieh, who was well known for her stance against corruption while she held sway as NDDC boss, beat five other nominees — including Hadiza Bala Usman, Abike Dabiri, Priscilla Ekwere Eleje and Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye — to emerge winner in a seven-day voting by Nigerians via online platforms.
According to Nigerians, who nominated and massively voted the Ogoni-born ex NDDC managing director, the choice of Nunieh was for her defiant fight for the soul of Nigeria, despite attempts on her life and attacks on her image.
The Rivers-born daughter of the first Ogoni lawyer, as NDDC MD, carried out a contract verification exercise which required contractors to go to the states where the contracts took place to go and register it and get it verified by an interim panel; an act that pitched her against state actors.
Nunieh, who holds the highest title in Ogoni land and the only living Gbene in the Kingdom, exposed several shoddy contract deals within the Commission, revealing that one senator alone had over 300 contracts and that 120 were paid for without any scratch of work.
She followed this by disclosing that one man was pocketing N1billion every month to help collect statutory funds from the oil companies mandated by the NDDC Act of 2000 to remit to the Commission. Not a few were angry.
At a brief profiling event of the awardee on Tuesday, November 24, in Port Harcourt, the Ogoni-born Nunieh expressed gratitude to Nigerians for standing by her throughout her tenure as NDDC MD, and for finding her worthy of nomination and their votes.
Describing the Leadership Excellence Award as "most credible", which prompted her acceptance of the nomination and vote, Nunieh lauded the Igbere TV management team for their good works.
“I am more than delighted to be named public servant of the year 2020 by Nigerians. I am particularly grateful because our people recognise our fight for the soul of Nigeria as NDDC MD”, she said.
“I, therefore, thank Nigerians for finding me worthy of this great honour and deserving of this prestigious award. This goes to show that we did the right thing, and were being watched,” the ex-NDDC MD added.

Recession: Nigeria’s Economy Doing Well Compared To Others –lai Mohammed
Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says the Nigerian economy is doing well compared to the economies of South Africa, Russia and other countries in recession.
He said the recession is inevitable due to the global collapse in oil prices occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic.
The minister spoke Wednesday on NTA Good Morning Nigeria Show monitored by The PUNCH.
The PUNCH had reported that amid a rising debt profile, inflation and unemployment, the Nigerian economy shrank again in the third quarter of this year.
This year’s recession is the worst in 36 years as data obtained from the World Bank indicated that the country’s Gross Domestic Product dropped by 10.92 per cent in 1983 and 1.2 per cent in 1984.
The National Bureau of Statistics, in its report for third quarter of 2020 released on Saturday, said the GDP, the broadest measure of economic prosperity, fell by 3.62 per cent in the three months up till September.
But speaking today, the minister said the government is optimistic that with its intervention measures, the recession will be short-lived.
Mohammed said, “It is true we are in a recession. Recession comes when a country records two consecutive quarters of negative growths. But we must go beyond that to understand that despite that, our economy is still very well in circumstances.
“The main reason why we have entered into this recession is the oil sector. The oil sector recorded -13.89% and that is the worst in 14 quarters. Of course, it is easy to understand why; with the pandemic, there is low demand for oil…but when you look at the non-oil sector which is about -2.51 % in Q3, it is far better than what it was in the Q2.
“Overall, yes, we are in a recession and it is inevitable but while our Q2 result was -6.1%, South Africa was -50% and as we speak today, Finland, Hungary, Spain, Mexico, Russia, Romania, Belgium, Austria have all fallen into recession.
“But we are very confident that with the intervention policies, with the fiscal and monetary interventions the government has put in place, the recession will be short-lived.”

Colonel Nwobosi Is Dead; Anambra State Mourns (Photos)
One of the soldiers who participated in the January 15, 1966 coup, Colonel Nwobosi has died on Tuesday morning at the age of 82, IgbereTV reports.
The elder statesman was formally Captain in the Nigerian Army, and Colonel in the defunct Biafran Army, as well as Chief of Staff to the late Biafran leader, General Emeka Ojukwu.
He participated in the January 1966 coup plot, popularly referred to as the Nzeogwu coup, which led to the collapse of the First Republic of Nigeria.
He died on Tuesday at his Obosi in Idemili North Local Government of Anambra State, his country home.
Hon. Emmanuel Nwobosi (jnr) on behalf of the family, said that the patriarch died after a brief illness associated with old age.
He said further that the family will give details of his funeral arrangement later.
“Yes, my father, Col Emma Nworah Nwobosi, is dead. He died today (Tuesday) after a brief illness, reasonably associated with old age,” he said
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala, Special Adviser to the Governor on Diaspora Affairs, Mr. Tony Muonagor, among others, accompanied Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, and they were received by Nwobosi's family members and kinsmen.
Speaking at his Country home in Obosi, Idemili North local government area, Governor Obiano who described him as a legend during his lifetime said that he worked closely with him, especially during the Ozoemezina mass burial for Nigeria/Biafra war victims held at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square.
Also, the member of the House of Representatives for Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, Hon. Chris Emeka Azubogu, has commiserated with the family of Nworah Nwobosi on the demise of their patriarch.
In a statement by his media aide, Ikechukwu Emeka Onyia, the lawmaker, who described Nwobosi as trusted companion of the late Biafra warlord, Chief Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ikemba Nnewi), asked the family to bear the loss with fortitude as, according to him, their late father was a blessing to Nigeria, Igbo people and Obosi community in particular; adding that the deceased lived a life worthy of emulation.
