Obaseki Stops All NDDC Projects In Edo As He Goes To Court

Barely a week after being inaugurated for a second term and two months after winning re-election, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has rolled out tough decisions in the state on governance.

Igbere TV reports that on Friday, the governor ordered contractors of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to immediately stop executing projects or undertaking contracts in the state.

Obaseki said the state government is approaching the court to seek an order stopping the federal agency from embarking on any project in the state without the consent of the state’s Executive Council.

Speaking when management team of Seplat Petroleum Company Limited paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, in Benin City, Obaseki said the NDDC has continued to fail the people of the region in the discharge of its responsibilities.

The governor noted: “We embarked on a very ambitious project by signing an agreement with the NDCC and Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDOPADEC), to jointly construct the Benin-Abraka Road. Unfortunately, NDDC, as usual, failed and we are going to Court. We will not allow them to operate in the State except subject to our approving every project.

“They are only to execute projects cleared by the State Executive Council. They can't come into the state and dictate to us what they want to do here. It’s our money and we will determine what we want, not them telling us what they want to do.”

“All NDDC contractors in Edo State are stopped forthwith from undertaking any contract or any work in the state. We want to go back and focus on our priorities. We want to build that Benin/Abraka Road. We are re-awarding that road,” Obaseki added.

Igbere TV recalls that Obaseki had made similar move against the NDDC when he allegedly, through his ally, a lawyer, approached the court stopping the inauguration of the then NDDC team constituted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

An Edo man, Dr. Pius Odubu and opponent in the then All Progressives Congress (APC) party of the governor was named chairman of the Commission, but the court processes stalled the inauguration.

This forced the President the reconstitute the NDDC team, allowing an interim committee to oversee the activities of the commission. Odubu was deputy governor and ally to former APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, whom Obaseki was at loggerheads with for months before decamping to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win re-election.

Scientists Successfully Reverse Human Ageing Process (Pics)

- Breathing pure oxygen may help to reverse the ageing process, scientists claim. Researchers used oxygen therapy to reverse two key indicators of ageing; 35 healthy adults aged 64 and older were placed into pressurised chamber, Sessions lasted 90 minutes and took place for five days a week for three months.

Scientists claim they have successfully reversed the human ageing process in a group of elderly adults in a breakthrough study.

Oxygen treatment altered the elderly people's bodies at a cellular level to how they were 25 years earlier, researchers claimed.

In a unique study, scientists used oxygen therapy to reverse two key indicators of biological ageing - telomere shortening and an accumulation of malfunctioning senescent cells.

As humans age, their bodies experience the shortening of telomeres - the protective caps on chromosomes - which leads to illnesses including cancer, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Senescent cells, or so-called zombie cells, prevent regeneration as they build up in the body over time.

The study used a method called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in an effort to prevent the deterioration of these two characteristics of the ageing process.

In the study, published in the journal Ageing, 35 healthy adults aged 64 and older were placed in pressurised oxygen chambers in Israel and breathed in pure oxygen through a mask.

The sessions lasted for 90 minutes each and took place five days a week for three months.

The pressurised chamber mimics a state of 'hypoxia', or oxygen shortage, enabling tissues to dissolve more oxygen which has well-known regenerative effects.

Results show the trial enabled telomeres to regrow by more than 20 per cent, while their senescent cells had been reduced by up to 37 per cent.

This is the equivalent to how their bodies were at a cellular level 25 years earlier, the scientists said.

'Since telomere shortening is considered the 'Holy Grail' of the biology of ageing, many pharmacological and environmental interventions are being extensively explored in the hopes of enabling telomere elongation,' said Professor Shai Efrati, a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, and co-author of the study.

'The significant improvement of telomere length shown during and after these unique protocols provides the scientific community with a new foundation of understanding that ageing can indeed be targeted and reversed at the basic cellular-biological level,' Efrati added.

The study is the latest in a series of trials which are trying to understand the anti-ageing process and increase life expectancy whilst making people feel younger. The premise is that ageing can be cured like a disease, scientists claim.

In 2015, BioViva chief executive Liz Parrish flew to Colombia to receive two experimental gene therapies she claimed could make permanent changes to her DNA in order to combat muscle loss and grow her telomeres.

Parrish received criticism for undergoing the experimental treatment by scientists, but she claims the gene therapy reversed the biological age of her immune cells by 20 years. She recently claimed that death is optional.

Previous studies have revealed that healthy eating and intense exercise can also preserve telomere length - but this experiment was unique because it exceeded natural interventions, the researchers said.

'Until now, interventions such as lifestyle modifications and intense exercise were shown to have some inhibition effect on the expected telomere length shortening,' said study researcher Dr Amir Hadanny, of Tel Aviv's Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research.

'However, what is remarkable to note in our study is that, in just three months of therapy, we were able to achieve such significant telomere elongation - at rates far beyond any of the current available interventions or lifestyle modifications.

NFF reveals why they can’t sack Rohr as Super Eagles coach

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has admitted they cannot fire Gernot Rohr as head coach of the Super Eagles, because of the cost.

Rohr has come under intense criticism, after the team failed to win any game in 2020.

The Eagles lost to Algeria and played a 1-1 draw against Tunisia in last month’s international friendly matches.

The three-time African champions ended the year with two disappointing draws against Sierra Leone in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

It led to the Minister of Sport and Youth Development, Sunday Dare, hinting that Rohr could be axed.

However, Pinnick insists Nigeria cannot afford to sack the German, especially since he just signed a new two-year deal in May.

“We cannot afford to sack Gernot Rohr. We cannot,” Pinnick said in an interview with NTA.

Rohr has been in charge of the Super Eagles since 2016 and has led Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup with a game to spare and repeated the same feat for 2019 AFCON, finishing in third place.

His new deal expires after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

NiMC: Wrong Disengagement From Service

Good morning all. Please I need an advice concerning this issue; it has been bothering our family for a long time now.

My father in-law has been working with National Identity Management Commission since 01-10-1987 as Clerical Officer II. Then it was Department of National Civic Registration.

In August 2010 he was given approval by the management NIMC to undertake a part time degree programme in Psychology Department at Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

Then August 15th 2020, he received disengagement letter from the commission on the ground that he did not possess a minimum requisite qualification of Bachelor Degree when he was already in the University in pursuit of Bachelor of Science Degree as approved.
Fast forward to 2012/2013 academic session, he graduated with Second Class Honour (Upper Division) in Psychology same year he was disengaged.

In a memo dated Tuesday 5th March 2019 from AGM/Head Human Capital Management Department NIMC. The management approved a period of five years grace to all the staff of the commission who do not possess a minimum requisite qualification of Bachelor degree to obtain same before 31st December 2023 which is the same approval given to him by the management.

My question is why is his own different? I have all the documents with me both photocopy and original.

Letter of disengagement
Application for reinstatement
Memo from AGM/Head Human Capital Management Department.

Please who should we write to? Who can help us out without asking for money? Which office or ministry should we channel our complaint to that will give us attention.

Banks Charge Customers For Failed Transactions

Nigerian banks have started charging customers for failed transactions, a move that could further compound economic hardship already assailing the masses.

The charges were imposed following a CBN directive earlier this year that directed banks to penalise customers who initiate direct debit transactions on their account but lack funds to complete the transaction.

In an email notice sent out to customers by Stanbic IBTC on Thursday and seen by Peoples Gazette, the penalty of one percent of the amount being transferred or N5000 of such, depending on the highest fee, will be charged against the customer who breach the new guideline.

If there’s no money at the time of the failed transaction, the charge will be withdrawn from the account whenever it is funded, IBTC said.

Direct debit is a standing order initiated by an account holder that enables the bank to debit a specified amount from the customer’s account at an agreed date.

The guide to charges by bank and non-bank financial institutions was created to streamline the application of charges on various products and services offered by banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria to their customers.

This guide came into effect in January, replacing the previous guide that was issued in 2017. The guide was criticised by economists as dangerous and insensitive because most Nigerians cannot afford to continue paying for a service they never received — a criticism the CBN rejected as unfounded.
