Donald Trump Fire Director Of Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Agency, Chris Krebs

US President, Donald J Trump, has terminated the appointment of Christopher Krebs, Director of Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

CISA, a standalone Federal Agency under the Department of Homeland Security, is saddled with the responsibility of improving protection of critical infrastructure from private and nation-hackers as well as co-ordinating CyberSecurity Services across the States/all levels of Government (The elections fall under this purview).

Krebs, its first Agency Director, had drawn the ire of President Donald Trump by calling the 2020 Elections the most secure in America history," publicly refuting the President's unsubstantiated claims of widespread electoral fraud.

The recent statement by Chris Krebs on the security of the 2020 Election was highly inaccurate, in that there were massive improprieties and fraud - including dead people voting, Poll Watchers not allowed into polling locations, “glitches” in the voting machines which changed votes from Trump to Biden, late voting, and many more.

Therefore, effective immediately, Chris Krebs has been terminated as Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Strike: Why FG will continue to pay ASUU through IPPIS – Ngige

THE Federal Government has said that for the University Transparency and Accountability Solution, UTAS, to be used as an alternative platform to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, there must be a hardware backing the system.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, had opposed the introduction of IPPIS as the payment platform, claiming that it did not take care of their peculiarities and had came up with UTAS.

But the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige has said that even if the UTAS passed the integrity test, it required the hardware to protect it against hacking and other challenges that could affect its efficiency.

Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Senator said even if government accepted the payment mode for lecturers who had rejected being placed on IPPIS, ASUU has no money to procure the necessary hardware for its implementation.

The Minister said that the Federal Government did not make any budgetary provision for the procurement of the UTAS hardware and wondered if the union has the required finances for such a project.

Ngige, however, said government has already forwarded the UTAS software to the Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for integrity test, saying that government will not want to discourage any Nigerian from providing homegrown solutions to issues.

Asked if government had shifted grounds on its negotiations with ASUU, the minister stated: “No, the UTAS, that is the University Transparent System which they brought is not yet ready. It is not fully ready, it is undergoing integrity test for the software. I am not computer scientist, but you must also know that you must test the hardware in the integrity test for the software.

“As we speak, ASUU has no hardware and UTAS does not have hardware backing.

“I am waiting for the NITDA full report but the preliminary report they gave me, the software integrity test will take them about six to eight weeks and thereafter, we go to the hardware. But the big issue is, who will provide the hardware?

“ASUU doesn’t have the finances to do so. Has government budgeted for it now as we speak? So, that one is a major problem. But we don’t have to dissuade anybody, we don’t have to tell anybody not to carry on, we like local content development, we need our things to be home grown. So, we are really encouraging them.

“By the time we finish with this other software test to look at its capacity, its ability to withstand shock and hacking etc, the hardware test is in, hacking and security. So, by the time we finish it, we will decide on what to do.

“But do not also forget that we need to have something for us to make payment to them as we speak. For those that have got into the system, they have pointed out some of the deficiency and they are being corrected. it’s work in progress.”

Ngige noted that since ASUU opted out of physical meetings with government because the outbreak of Covid-19, the sessions are just about to resume.

He added: “As you know ASUU is on strike which they started since March 9, 2020 to be precise. We have held negotiations meetings, they opted out for the negotiation meetings during the COVID-19 period because they said they don’t want virtual meetings. So, we have just resumed our meeting.

“We have some grey areas to clear and we will meet sometime this week. I’m waiting for one or two reports before I communicate a date to them.

“The major report is the report from the Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) as per the system developed by ASUU which the government sent to them for integrity test.”

He also faulted the claim by ASUU that the government had not fulfilled any of the promises made to the union, adding that out of the nine points demands of the university te

achers, six had been attended to.

Islamic Scholars In Kano Call For Anti-blasphemy Laws

A Coalition of Islamic scholars in Kano has called on the state assembly to make a law for the punishment of those who commit blasphemy. The coalition made the call during a courtesy visit to Abdulazeez Gafasa, speaker of Kano house of assembly.

Speaking during the visit, Ibrahim Muazzam, a member of the coalition, said the need for the law to punish blasphemers was agreed upon during a recent public lecture over the “blasphemy” against Prophet Muhammad by President Emmanuel Macron of France.

Muazzam said to prevent the breakdown of peace in Kano, it is necessary for a law to be in place to punish those who commit blasphemy.

He said the coalition embarked on consultation to prevent any “hard reaction” that might trail the comments made by the France president against Prophet Muhammed.

“Our resolutions include that the state government should replace the teaching of French language in all schools with Arabic language,” he said.

“Muslims should boycott French products as well as their economic, financial and political interests until France is pulled down to its knees.

“Muslims worldwide should consider Macron and his administration as paragons of Islamophobia.

“Muslims should re-affirm their faith in, and love of, prophet Muhammad (Upon Whom is Peace) and should strive to spread his message and character of mercy and peace.

“United Nations Organization (UNO) to prevail upon its agencies as well as international NGOs to desist from supporting all acts of blasphemy and to caution them that freedom of speech does not extend to infringement on other people’s faith.”

In his response, the speaker said the assembly supports the resolutions of the coalition, adding that the assembly would make laws to support existing peace and unity in the state.

“We are fully in support of the resolution, and we are going to do everything within our power to ensure the enactment of the law, and also the enforcement,” Gafasa said.

“In those areas that we have no power over it, we are going to write to the relevant authorities on the issue.”

140 Engineers Conferred With Fellowship Of The Nigerian Society Of Engineers

Engineers from different walks of life gathered for The Nigerian Society of Engineers, '16th Fellowship Conferment Lecture & Ceremony' themed 'Circular Economy in Medical Waste Management'.

The programme of event saw through the seating of guests, National Anthems and prayers and then a welcome address by the Chairman, Board of Fellows - Engr. Felix Atume, FNSE, mni, and then an address by the President, Engr. Babagana Mohammed FNSE. What followed hence was the major business of the day; the conferment of fellowship, a total number of 140 engineers became Fellows of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

Particularly interesting out of this number is Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Funmilayo Waheed Adekojo, the CEO/MD of FunmiAyinke Nigeria Limited. Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Funmilayo has indeed shown to be the complete definition of beauty and brain, having graduated with honours from the department of Mechanical Engineering, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State. She then went on to become the Head, Mechanical Engineering unit at the Works and Services unit of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Funmilayo is a humanitarian through and through. On her core is an intense passion to positively touch lives. This led her into establishing the FunmiAyinke Humanity Foundation that has brought hope to many lives through job creation and empowerment programmes for widows, single parents, abandoned children and children under the care of single parents.

Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Funmilayo's life is an embodiment of motivation, dedication, compassion and integrity. She is a shining light and an inspiration to young people who are at a stage of life where she had once been, and even more particularly to the girl child who has aspirations of becoming an engineer — a profession largely dominated by men. She has shown that with tenacity and determination, everything is possible.

Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Funmilayo is happily married and blessed with four children, and when she is not winning awards, or getting conferred with fellowships, she spends her time reading, dancing and she makes music, she recently dropped her single debut titled 'It is our Time' by Funmi Ayinke.

The horizon started to descend on the programme of the day, goodwill messages were shared, and then finally the Vote of Thanks by the Chairman, Planning Committee, Engr. (Dr.) Victor O. Oyenuga, FNSE brought what was an insightful event to its very end.

ASUU Strike: Integrity Test On UTAS To Last 8 Weeks — Ngige

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, said the integrity test being conducted on the software of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution being proposed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities would take between six and eight months to be completed.

ASUU is currently on strike in protest against the Federal Government’s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

In its stead, the union proposed UTAS as an alternative.

Speaking with State House correspondents after a meeting he had with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Ngige said the Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency was conducting the integrity test on the software.

The minister however said while the software was available, there was no hardware to back it up.

He claimed that if the software passed the integrity test being conducted by NITDA, the university teachers do not have the needed fund to procure the necessary hardware for its implementation.

He explained that the Federal Government did not make provision for the procurement of the UTAS hardware in the budget.

He said the decision to send the UTAS software to NITDA for integrity test was based on the fact that the Federal Government will not want to discourage anybody or group from providing homegrown solutions to issues.

He explained further, “The UTAS, that is the University Transparent System which they brought, is not yet ready.

“It is not fully ready, it is undergoing an integrity test for the software. I am not a computer scientist, but you must also know that you must test the hardware and the integrity test for the software.

“As we speak, ASUU has no hardware and UTAS does not have hardware backing.

“I am waiting for the NITDA’s full report but the preliminary report they gave me, the software integrity test will take them about six to eight weeks and thereafter, we go to the hardware.

Kaduna-Abuja Highway: Kidnappers Demand N270m Ransom To Release 9 ABU Students

Armed men who kidnapped some Nigerian French language students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, along the Kaduna-Abuja highway on Sunday, have demanded a cumulative sum of N270 million as their ransom.

One of the students among those in the bus but succeeded in escaping, Dickson Oko, told DailyTrust that the kidnappers had reached out to the families of the kidnapped students, demanding N30 million ransom on each.

Oko, who sustained a gunshot wound during the attack, said he was recuperating but was devastated by the thought of his colleagues in captivity.

He told Daily Trust that despite the gunshot wound, he was among those that ran out of the bus, leaving his phone and other belongings.

He, however, said when he returned to the bus after the attack, his phones and those of others were no longer there.

Oko and the bus driver, Nuruddeen Mohammed, told Daily Trust that 12 of them were on the bus but nine students were kidnapped.

Also, a female relative of one of the kidnapped students told the Voice of America (VOA) Hausa Service monitored in Kaduna that the kidnappers had reached out to the family demanding N30 million per student.

She pleaded with the kidnappers to have mercy and release the victims, saying they were only students.

The driver narrated to Daily Trust how he and three other students escaped the grip of the bandits in the Kaduna-Abuja highway kidnap incident.

The students, who were on their way to the French Village in Lagos for their language immersion programme, were trapped at the Akilubu-Gidan Busa axis on the highway when gunmen blocked both lanes of the road and opened fire on motorists.

Meanwhile, the university has confirmed that eight people were kidnapped. But Mohammed, the driver, said he had 12 students in the bus – 10 females and two males.

He succeeded in evading the kidnappers and returned to Kaduna with three students while the whereabouts of the remaining nine were unknown.

Mohammed, a commercial driver stationed at Mando Park in Kawo, Kaduna, told our correspondents that they were trapped sometime around 3:10 pm at Busa, a few kilometres after Akilubu.

"Immediately they came on the road, the armed men opened fire. They shot two of the students on the bus, and we noticed that they had erected a roadblock behind us and another in front. There was another roadblock mounted on the other lane. So the only thing I could do was to stop."

He said with gunshots directed at their bus and other vehicles ahead of them; he suggested to the students to brace up and run, adding, "I opened the door and crawled into the grass. The gunshots were everywhere; the person on the passenger's seat in front also came down even though he was shot. I crossed onto the other lane. I never knew I would survive because there were gunshots directed at me."

He said he saw the gunmen open fire at a Gulf car with people in it. He said the attack, which scared him, aided his decision to run.

"I can't say how many people were killed but what scared me was how they opened fire at the Gulf car even though it had stopped and there were people in it. But the bandits opened fire and kept shooting. That was when I decided that it was better they killed me while on the run than face a gruesome fate in the vehicle," he added.

Mohammed, however, explained that when he returned to the roadside, soldiers had arrived and engaged the bandits in a shootout, adding that he went to Katari Police Station to make a statement as soon as the situation calmed down.

"While making the statement, one of my passengers who had a baby came and said that she couldn't believe that I survived because they all thought bullets had hit me.

"She was trembling and told the police that when the soldiers came, the bandits formed two groups; one went with several kidnapped victims into the bush, while the other bandits stayed back to engage the security agents in an attempt to distract them," he said.

According to Mohammed, two other students had been found, including the student on the passenger's seat who sustained a gunshot wound, adding that "the woman confirmed that the bandits left with nine of the students while we took the three who escaped to the hospital and I came back to Kaduna with them on Monday."

The Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi, said yesterday that bandits had been degraded in the country.

He was responding to the concern raised by a security analyst and Daily Trust columnist, Barrister Bulama Bukarti, over the activities of the bandits in the northwestern part of the country.

Dingyadi, while briefing reporters after the quarterly meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, said bandits had been subdued and that they would not recover.

Bukarti had featured in a live Instagram programme hosted by Daily Trust on Monday where he expressed fears that the bandits may become too powerful to be reined in if care was not taken.

"These bandits have already been degraded. So, there is no way they can resuscitate themselves and take over. I think they have already been degraded; what they are doing is just a hit-and-run kind of tactics. So, we don't see any sign of them coming to take over or overpower. I think they have been well degraded and they are just trying to show their presence in a very cowardly manner," he said.

The minister, while reacting to the concerns that police had abandoned the Abuja-Kaduna road and the plans to ensure peace returned to the route, said it was an overstatement to insinuate that security agents had deserted the highway.

He said the reported cases of attacks along the route should not be interpreted that bandits had taken over despite the 24-hour patrol being jointly done by the police and the military.

"Once a small thing happens in a particular place like this Kaduna, we begin to talk about the lack of security in that area. That place is being monitored 24 hours. There are police and the army who are on a kind of joint patrol on a 24 hours basis.

"We also have our separate police formation that is also on that road. I think it is an overstatement to say that that place is not being secured. People are still following it.

"We agree that there have been cases of attacks, but these are normal things these people do whenever they have an opportunity, and we are equal to the task.

"Whenever this kind of thing happens, we pursue them like what happened just two days ago; those people were rescued. So, police and security personnel will continue to monitor this road and all other places to ensure that peace is to a very large extent maintained in the area," he stated.
