Black Women Five Times More Likely To Die During Childbirth

Tinuke Awe says she had to be rushed to hospital because she was dismissed and a life-threatening condition was diagnosed late.

Black women are at the highest risk of death during childbirth but the NHS has "no target to end it", according to a government report.

The death rate for black women is five times higher than for white women, the Joint Committee on Human Rights document said.

"The NHS acknowledge and regret this disparity," it said, concluding the government must introduce "a target to end the disparity in maternal mortality".

Two women have talked to Sky News about their experience of bias during labour and birth.

Tinuke Awe said she wasn't listened to, her pain was "dismissed" and her pre-eclampsia - a life threatening condition - was diagnosed very late which led to her being rushed to hospital.

"I just wasn't taken seriously," she said. "I think it's ridiculous really. I feel like, yes, I'm black but I'm still a woman, I still bleed the same blood.

"Any assumptions made off the back of the colour of my skin, I just think it's not on."

Ms Awe describes being in a lot of pain and asking midwives in hospital to assess her.

"She didn't check me over, she was very dismissive… I didn't understand why she wasn't listening," she said.

"I'll never forget the look of shock on her face when she did check - I had progressed really quickly. I was 8cm and almost ready to push.

"Then it was a swarm of doctors and midwives - 'get her into the delivery suite, we need to get his baby out now' - it was worrying and stressful."

Ms Awe's son is now nearly three years old, and she has a six-month-old baby girl, but she has never forgotten her first experience.

As a result, she and a friend set up Fivexmore, a campaign to try to overturn the mortality statistic for black women in childbirth in the UK.

Clo Abe, who helps run the campaign, stresses it is still relatively safe for all women to give birth in the UK.

She explained that the reasons behind the figures are very complex and deep-rooted.

Ms Abe said "unconscious bias" plays a part in perpetuating "myths" that some believe "black women can take more pain, black women's skin is tougher".

Deborah Lola said her first pregnancy was traumatising.

Her baby daughter, Grace, nearly died during childbirth and Ms Lola said she felt she was not taken seriously by health professionals.

"It was a terrible time. It was really frightening," she said.

"Every time I stood up I was bleeding. It was only then that they went to call the registrar and said 'we need to give birth to this baby now or this baby is going to die'."

"It was devastating. It was horrible," she said. "Knowing something is wrong, saying something is wrong, and then nothing is done - that was the worst part of it."

Ms Lola said she was also neglected during her antenatal treatment in 2017.

Her daughter weighed significantly less than she should have quite early on in her pregnancy but she was given little attention.

She felt dismissed by health care professionals whilst in labour when she raised concerns about pain.

For the birth of her second child, Gabriel, Ms Lola chose to be around black health practitioners.

"As hard as it is to say, I needed to be around that to give me the confidence to know that I was going to be okay. Birth can be life or death," she said.

She strongly believes her experience was related to her race and is calling for the government to offer more training to healthcare professionals on how they should treat mothers from different demographics.

Continuity of midwife care throughout pregnancy for black, Asian and minority ethnic groups was a target set out in January last year by the NHS.

Christine Ekechi, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Imperial College London, explained that to tackle the inequality issue we must go back to the very start.

"Black women are twice and three times as likely to deliver a baby that is stillborn," she said.

"They are more likely to deliver babies that are underweight, and we know once that inequity is embedded at birth that then will lead to a young female child more likely to have poorer health conditions, gynae conditions, that may make her at greater risk when pregnant."

Dr Habib Naqvi MBE, director of the newly-launched NHS Race and Health Observatory, said racial inequality is global and systemwide and has been further exacerbated by the pandemic.

"We're all too familiar with different rates of cancer and cardiovascular disease and diabetes [for BAME people]," he said.

"COVID-19 has had and continues to have a disproportionate impact on BAME patients and healthcare staff."

Osinbajo: Government Is Open To New, Creative Ideas In Growing Nigeria’s Economy

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says a major feature of Nigeria’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic as indicated in the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP) currently being implemented, has been an openness to new and creative ideas. Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja said the vice president spoke at a webinar with some French business leaders under the aegis of the Franco-Nigeria Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The vice president said that the approach was in a bid to save jobs, protect businesses, and attract new investments

He said that part of what the Federal Government had done in its response to the pandemic was to build a business environment that would be supportive of domestic and foreign investors. “It is important to recognise that the pandemic, which really is the cause of the downturn, not just in the Nigerian economy but practically all of our economies, all over the world, except perhaps China, also provides incredible opportunities for doing all manner of very innovative and creative things. According to him, it is a season to experiment and be ready to do a lot more.

According to him, it is a season to experiment and be ready to do a lot more. “ And if you look at our ESP, which is our response to the pandemic, what we tried to do was to do a few things that we thought would be game-changing. “For example, one of the important things that we are trying to do with respect to renewable energy is with solar power. “We are collaborating with several solar power companies to provide within the next 12 months, five million Nigerian households with solar home systems. “This is partly to address the issues with the national grid by providing more off-grid capacity and provide more opportunities in the renewable energy space. “ What we are doing is to get the financing through the Central Bank of Nigeria as part of the Economic Sustainability Plan.” Osinbajo said private sector commitment needed to align to the Federal Government’s backward integration policy.

He said he was glad to hear that the chamber was already doing 1.5 million litres of milk in Ogun, adding that there was still a lot more to be done. “For us, the issue of backward integration is right, front and centre, and it has been so for many years. “We believe that aggressive pursuit of it is really important for us as an economic policy. “The most important thing, as I said, is that we are committed to backward integration. “Unfortunately, over the years, many companies have committed to backward integration but have simply not been as diligent and faithful with those promises.

“So, we want to see the much greater commitment and a plan that is as aggressive as our aspirations,” he said. Participants at the forum included Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, the Executive Secretary, and Chairman, Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), Mrs. Yewande Sadiku and the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jérôme Pasquier. Others were Chairman of the Board of the Franco-Nigeria Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Usman Mohammed, representatives of some French companies operating in Nigeria including Total Nigeria, Air France, Kwik Delivery, among others.

Mobile Court Jails Herdsmen For Open Grazing In FCT

A mobile court attached to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEP has convicted three herdsmen for violating the FCT ban on open grazing within the city centre.

The sanitation court also ordered the forfeiture of cattle seized from the herdsmen and the transfer of the animals to Kuje and Suleija prisons as well as a rehabilitation centre in Kubwa for the feeding of inmates.

An official of AEPB said the court also ruled that the convicted herders should pay N5000 each as penalty or remain in prison for another six months after serving the initial jail term of three months.

Director of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Alhaji Baba Shehu Lawal, who made this known to newsmen explained that the cattle rearers were punished to serve as warning to others for repeatedly violating the law banning open grazing in the territory.

Lawal said the herders and their cattle were arrested in Wuye, Games Village and Katampe areas of the territory by AEPB marshals after they ignored several warnings to desist from open grazing.

Lawal remarked that the cattle often strayed into the highways and caused fatal accidents and called on the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, to caution its members on their excesses and refrain from violating laws.

He hoped other herders would learn some lesson from the penalty, warning that further violation of the anti-grazing law would attract severe punishment.

“Grazing and rearing of cattle within the city centre is prohibited. It is prohibited by the laws establishing the FCT. The action is a nuisance. It causes traffic gridlock and accidents. The cattle also leave heaps of waste on the highway which makes the road very slippery.

“There were instances where serious accidents occurred as a result of cattle roaming the highway. We will not tolerate that attitude again in Abuja because we want to make the city a befitting capital we should all be proud about,” the director warned.

FCT Councils Urged To Make Skills Acquisition Compulsory

An appeal has been made to area council administrations in the Federal Capital Territory to reduce drug abuse, unemployment and restiveness by making skills acquisition compulsory for youths.

A philanthropist, Alhaji Yahaya Maikasuwa, made the appeal at the closing ceremony of a three-day skills acquisition workshop organised for selected youths and women in Gwagwalada.

Maikasuwa explained that he was moved to sponsor the training programme by the high level of unemployment, crime and drug abuse within the territory.

“This programme was designed to empower the beneficiaries through skills acquisition. I realised that we have so many unemployed youths who idle away and engage in negative activities despite their talents. I am happy we have given them the opportunity to learn something useful that will keep them properly engaged.

“We hope that the skills will encourage the beneficiaries to be self-reliant and productive in the society.”

The business man urged area council administrations to make skills acquisition by youths and women a priority and compulsory in the territory to reduce poverty and crime.

He also advised beneficiaries to make proper use of the skills to improve themselves and their families.

The participants, who learned various skills of choice ranging from tailoring, hairdressing, barbing, carpentry, brick making, shoe manufacturing, welding and paint production, were drawn from the 10 wards of Gwagwalada Area Council.

FG To Complete One-Lane Of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway In June 2021

The federal government has assured motorists and commuters plying the Enugu-Onitsha expressway of smooth journey in seven months’ time when it would have completed one side of the damaged highway.

The federal director of highways, Southeast region, Mr. Bola Aganaba, who made the disclosure during an inspection tour of the project, also disclosed that a section of the expressway would be opened as from December 16 to ease traffic.

The expressway which had been undergoing rehabilitation since 2018 with a competition date in 2021, had been a nightmare to road users following its deplorable condition. Apart from high cost of travelling between Onitsha and Enugu, the travel time and discomfort experienced by commuters on the road had forced many to ply the old road which, Orient Daily gathered, had also gone bad due to heavy traffic in recent times.

However, Aganaba assured that the travelling nightmares on the expressway would be over before end of June 2021. “By the time table given to the contractors, one lane of the expressway from Onitsha to Enugu would be completed by the middle of next year. The Enugu end is also being rehabilitated; contractors are also working on the Enugu end,” he disclosed.

The director blamed coronavirus pandemic for the slowed pace of work on the road, expressing confidence of early completion of the project on schedule. He said,” I have come to check what the contractors are doing because, before now, we gave them instruction to ensure that one side of the expressway is completed before the Yuletide for easy movement for motorists.

“The contractors have agreed to open it just for the Christmas to reduce hardship usually encountered by people returning for the Christmas and New Year celebrations. We don’t want people to encounter gridlock and we have also arranged with the Federal Road Safety Corps to ensure that obstacles are promptly removed.

On his part, Anambra state controller of works, Adeyemo Ajani confirmed that “The section from Umunya-Amawbia is 18 kilometres and the contractors have completed 12 kilometers, remaining about 6 kilometers which is expected to be completed by the middle of December,” he said.
