Ondo Deputy Governor Accuses Akeredolu Of Plotting To Remove Him Before End Of Tenure

Ajayi said Akeredolu was considering all means to have him removed from office after an initial plan of forging his signature on a resignation letter prepared in his name.

Deputy governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, has accused Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of being desperate to remove him from office before the expiration of their tenure in office, which elapses in February 2021.

Ajayi said Akeredolu was considering all means to have him removed from office after an initial plan of forging his signature on a resignation letter prepared in his name.

In a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr Allen Sowore, the deputy governor linked the sack of the Attorney-General of Ondo State to part of plans by Akeredolu to kick him out of office before his tenure expires.

The statement reads, "Mr Governor has clandestinely orchestrated the announcement of the removal of the Deputy Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Ogundeji Iroju, without any due process.

"All these are premeditated efforts to circumvent the institutions of state and usurp the powers of both the legislative and judiciary arms of government to pave way for the illegal removal of the deputy governor.

"The general public should be wary of these latest antics and desperation of the governor to remove his deputy through a macabre plan to forge signatures of members of the state’s House of Assembly on the prepared impeachment notice."

The feud between Ajayi and Akeredolu started when the deputy governor began to contest for the position of the governor, which he eventually lost.

The state lawmakers had made moves to impeach the deputy governor by writing to the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Oluwatoyin Akeredolu, to have him removed.

The judge rejected the request due to the inability of the Assembly members to follow the constitution to form the required number needed to impeach Ajayi.

Ogbonnaya Onu: Crude Oil & Minerals Are Valued More Than Nigerian Youths

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, has observed that crude oil and other natural resources are valued more than the lives and potentials of Nigerian youths.

Dr Onu made this divulgence on Tuesday at the book launch of the former Minister of Education, Professor Tunde Adeniran, titled: “Africa’s Security Challenges In The 21st Century; Power, Principles and Praxis in Global Politics”.

According to the Minister: ‘Nigeria is endowed with very intelligent youths. They are a national asset rather than a curse and this asset needs to be converted for the economic benefits of the country.

‘Unfortunately, today, natural resources such as crude oil and minerals, are more appreciated and valued than our youths. These resources do not add up to the value which the youths can bring. Our youths have tremendous potentials that need to be encouraged.’

Dr Onu added that science, technology and innovation have the capacity to educate and provide youths with the skills they need to bring out their potentials, while describing the author, Prof. Adeniran, as ‘a star that guides people to shine.’

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, lamented over the increasing number of insecurity cases in the country, describing the situation as ‘a tragic story to tell and a nightmare.’

Also speaking at the event, the former Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Olusegun Adebayo, acknowledged insecurity as a threat to governance, while he appeals to the government to handle it more seriously.

‘Insecurity is a disaster to any government, including Nigeria, but if we commit more time and strategies to it, we will bring it to submission.’

However, the book reviewer, Professor Jideofor Adibe, a publisher of professional journals, noted that the book deserves to have a place in every library.

He said: ‘I see it as a reference source and not just a book. Another point is that it is a very detailed examination of the sources and drivers of security concerns in Africa with contextual and historical discussions on each driver,’ adding that ‘the book approaches history from a strictly African perspective.’

In his closing remarks, the President of the Nigerian Folklore Society (NFS), Dr Bukar Usman, spoke passionately about the unity of Nigeria, insisting that the government and all citizens must do all they can to endure that the country does not break up.

Ifeanyichukwu Okereke's Family Demands ₦500 Milion From Gbajabiamila

Family demands N500m from Gbajabiamila over vendor’s death

The family of Ifeanyichukwu Okereke, a vendor who died after being shot by a security aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has written a letter to the Speaker, demanding N500m.

This is according to a letter dated November 23, 2020, signed by the lawyer of the family, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN).

Ozekhome was given the mandate to write the letter by the father of the deceased, Okorie Okereke; and the younger brother to the deceased, Destiny Okereke.

The Department of State Services had last week arrested the operative, Abdullahi Hassan, who shot Okereke while Gbajabiamila had also visited the family of the deceased and promised to ensure that they do not suffer.

However, the family demanded more, adding that nothing could bring back the dead vendor back to life.

“That you adequately compensate the Okereke family with a modest sum of N500m only. This monetary demand can never adequately replace or take the place of their son, husband, brother and breadwinner’s life. But it will at least mitigate the obvious trauma and hardship the premature demise of their irreplaceable breadwinner has placed on them,” the family said.

The family also asked the Speaker to ensure that the safety of vendors is guaranteed as they had become afraid to return to the streets since the tragic incident.

The Okereke family said it would take legal action against Gbajabiamila if all the demands are not met within seven days.

“Take note therefore that it is our clients’ firm instruction that in the event that you fail, refuse and/or neglect to accede to or proffer reasonable compensatory terms to our above modest demands within seven days from the date of this letter, we shall without any further correspondences from us, take appropriate legal steps to enforce our clients’ constitutional rights,” the letter stated.

Joke Sanwo-Olu: We Are Determined To Stamp Out Gender-Based Violence In Lagos

WE ARE DETERMINED TO STAMP OUT GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN LAGOS – SANWO-OLU’S WIFE

… Unveils Activities To Mark 16 Days Of Activism Against GBV

#foragreaterlagos

@jidesanwoolu

Lagos State First Lady, Dr @JokeSanwoolu on Tuesday vowed that the State Government will continue to implement various initiatives aimed at stamping out the heinous crime of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the State, especially against women and children.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke during a press briefing held at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja to unveil activities lined up to mark this year’s Lagos GBV Week and the global 16 Days of Activism to end violence against women and girls, said the commitment of the present administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains the same which is zero tolerance to all forms of sexual and gender-based violence.

According to her, “Today is another great day in the annals of Lagos State as we jointly march forward in our quest to frontally stamp out all forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), especially against women and children in our communities across the State.

“Essentially, we are here to unveil activities we have lined up in furtherance of the Lagos State Gender-Based Violence Week designed to scale up awareness and galvanize action.

"This is with the view to ensuring eradication of the menace of violence against women and girls in our dear state. ”She said the Lagos GBV Week was being championed through a collaborative effort between her Office and critical stakeholders including Ministries of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation; Youth and Social Development; Justice; Education; Health, Information and Strategy; Lagos State Judiciary, and the Nigerian Police Force.

“It is also in line with the cause being championed by the 36 First Ladies in Nigeria, via our forum, to collectively end rape in the country, as well as the global 16 Days of Activism of the United Nations, which is an annual campaign to end violence against women,” she said.

Speaking on the 2020 UN Campaign - "Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!,” the First Lady said it was necessitated by the challenges brought about by the unexpected Covid-19 pandemic, which according to her, effectively altered life and ensured an unanticipated lockdown not just in Nigeria, but across the world.

“As all efforts were geared toward battling Covid-19 pandemic, the issue of an already-existing pandemic of rape and violence against women and children was relegated to the background, and the result was a worrisome and alarming spike in rape cases across the country,” she said, adding that her office and other stakeholders have been collaboratively working to address the menace.

On activities for the GBV Week, Sanwo-Olu said plans have been firmed up to embark on a massive Social Media Campaign, Identification of Complaint Platforms, Documentary and Docudrama as well as Sensitization of various Women Groups.

She added that a working visit would be paid to Office of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) in Alausa as well as the Gender Desk Unit of the Nigerian Police, Panti.“Also, we will be visiting the Proposed Shelter Sites for victims of Domestic Violence being spearheaded by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), which is one of the success stories of our collaborative effort on ending Gender-Based Violence, with regards to care for victims.

“Furthermore, in continuation of the visit to Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, we shall also be embarking on Symbolic Walk against Rape in some notorious Local Government Areas across the

.“The highpoint of the GBV Week is a visit to Mr. Governor; Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu who I must confess has been commendably supportive and leading efforts to fight the heinous crime of rape and all forms of Gender-Based Violence in the State.

A Compendium of Stakeholders' Meeting on Gender-Based Violence in Lagos State will also be presented to Mr. Governor during the visit.

“Our aim of doing this is that we envision a society where Sexual and Gender-Based Violence is reduced to the barest minimum and we are determined to achieve this by working collaboratively and effectively with relevant stakeholders,” the First Lady said.

On her part, Wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Oluremi Hamzat urged members of the public to join the effort of the State Government to drastically reduce the menace of rape and all forms of gender-based violence.

The press conference was attended by relevant stakeholders including Chairman NUTRW, Lagos Branch, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya; representatives of African Women Lawyers Association, Youth Council of Nigeria, and Parents Forum in Lagos State, among others.
