ASUU Zonal Chapters To Review Strike This Week

ZONAL chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have said they will meet this week to review the union’s ongoing strike.

The national body of the union and the Federal Government could not agree on the universities teachers’ demands, apart from the N65 billion the government released to the union last week.

ASUU Chairman at the Abia State University (ABSU), Mr. Victor U. Nkemdirim, announced yesterday that the union would meet tomorrow to discuss and pass a resolution on the lingering face-off between the government and the union’s members.

Nkemdirim, who said he was in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for a zonal meeting of the union, told The Nation on phone that the union’s members in the zone would examine a memorandum from the national body and later take a position on it.

The union leader said the members would report back to the national leadership on the zone’s position.

“The ASUU national body asked various chapters nationwide to hold congresses between Monday and Wednesday to deliberate the resolutions on the items being discussed. Ours will be on Wednesday. We have no resolution for now until the congress meet by 7 a.m on Wednesday.”

But the union’s chairperson at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Prof. Chinyere Echendu, spoke with The Nation yesterday on phone at the end of the chapter’s meeting.

She said the university’s chapter had sent its position to the zonal chapter, which would communicate same to the national body.

On the position of the union at the end of the meeting, Prof. Echendu said: “As a branch, we have met and considered the proposal of the government.

“We have taken a resolution and have given the mandate back (to the national body) to continue with the meeting by Friday.

“It is not possible to tell you the resolutions that we reached. We have taken a position in my branch and the position we have given to our zonal coordinator, which he will present to the national body. The national body will present this to the national strike committee. The national strike committee will present it to the Federal Government.

“Whatever each branch has presented will be brought together for consideration and for a position to be taken.

“That is the way it works. There is nothing like yes or no answer in what you are asking me.”

The Sokoto zone of the union yesterday said it was also holding consultations on the latest overtures by the Federal Government before a meeting at the National Executive Council (NEC) level will determine its next line of action on the union’s strike.

The Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Jamilu Shehu, told The Nation that there is ongoing consultations in the various zones on the offer made by the federal government which could take up to next week before a final decision is conveyed to the National Executive Committee of ASUU for further action

Shehu, who also oversees varsities in Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina states, insisted that the consultations must be concluded before any announcement by the NEC of the association.

The chairman of ASUU chapter at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Dr. Lazarus Maigoro, also said the chapter was still awaiting details of the overture by the Federal Government to the national body.

Maigoro, who spoke on phone with The Nation in Jos, said: “Government has made some offers but the details are not yet available to us.

“Consultations are still ongoing on the way forward.”

ASUU Chairman at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Dr. Kudu Dangana said: “The Federal Government is not serious. There are very important issues to address as raised by ASUU, but the Federal Government is playing with our demands.”

Former Aviation Staff Threaten To Petition EFCC, ICPC As BPE, NAHCO Withhold Pension After 15 Years Of Sacking

This was revealed by rights lawyer and counsel to the ex-workers, Mr Joe Nwokedi, who gave a two-week ultimatum for the payment of the pension.

Former workers of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company have threatened to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission over the non-payment of their pension after 15 years of disengagement by the company.

This was revealed by rights lawyer and counsel to the ex-workers, Mr Joe Nwokedi, who gave a two-week ultimatum for the payment of the pension.

Nwokedi also gave the same ultimatum to the Bureau of Public Enterprises to address the continued delay in payment of pension and other rights due to the sacked workers including the N1.3bn severance package.

Nwokedi stated that BPE was yet to respond to a letter written to it on October 7, 2020 seeking explanation on the N1.3bn severance package released for pension of ex-NAHCO workers.

He said, “They could not answer the question as to the where-about of N1.3bn. It was on record that it was mapped out for the severance package of our clients.

"That now led us to BPE because they mentioned BPE and in the course of our deliberations with them, they availed us with a document from BPE directing them as to when NAHCO was privatised."

Nwokedi claimed that the silence of the BPE on the matter showed their involvement in the non-payment of the pension after 15 years to the ex-workers.

He said the workers will be writing to the minister in charge of the department and the presidency to seek intervention in the payment of the pensions.

"We will also proceed to court since they find it difficult on their own to explain to us, they can explain to the court.

"We have done what we ought to do like right citizens of Nigeria by writing a letter to them, visiting their office, making a request for them to summon a meeting, giving an opportunity for us to be heard.

"We want to hear from them and not work under presumption. We are very convinced that this money is somewhere and we cannot allow the money belonging to their clients to be diverted to somewhere. That is completely illegal and must be resisted.

"We have enough documents to submit petitions and go to court, and we are sure the court will consider us," the lawyer added.

The lawyer stressed that they will begin to petition EFCC and ICPC if after two weeks the BPE does not call for a meeting between the representatives of the ex-workers and the lawyer.

SaharaReporters had published how some ex-staff of the aviation company died from curable sickness due to the inability to seek medical treatment.

They revealed that they have suffered financial loss, social degeneration, psychological and physical trauma due to non-payment of their pension.

One of the affected former workers of NAHCO explained that while the ex-staff had done verification, PTAD and BPE are employing delay tactics to frustrate the pensioners from receiving their funds.

“NAHCO was privatised in 2005 and the BPE money that was supposed to be given to us, they did not begin to give us until towards the end of 2019.

“To pay the money, we went for verification but they are now paying us peanuts. Some of us were given N29,000 as final pay-off. Some of us that spent 28 years in NAHCO received lesser pay,” he said.

The affected workers numbered over 700 as they maintained that the N1.3bn pending at the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate and BPE remained their severance benefits and not for NAHCO.

African soccer president Ahmad banned for 5 years by FIFA

GENEVA (AP) — African soccer confederation president Ahmad Ahmad was banned for five years by FIFA on Monday for financial misconduct.

The ban was announced during the Madagascan official’s campaign to be re-elected for four more years as the head of African soccer. His position also makes him a FIFA vice president.

The FIFA ethics committee found “Ahmad had breached his duty of loyalty, offered gifts and other benefits, mismanaged funds and abused his position as the CAF President.”

Ahmad, a former government official in Madagascar, was also fined 200,000 Swiss francs ($220,00.

Ahmad’s first four-year term was clouded with allegations of financial wrongdoing and misconduct at the Confederation of African Football headquarters in Cairo.

He was detained by French authorities in Paris on the eve of the Women’s World Cup for questioning about a CAF equipment deal with a company that appeared to have little connection with soccer.

“The investigation into Mr. Ahmad’s conduct in his position as CAF President during the period from 2017 to 2019 concerned various CAF-related governance issues, including the organization and financing of an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca, his involvement in CAF’s dealings with the sports equipment company Tactical Steel and other activities,” FIFA said in a statement.

An audit of CAF finances pointed to irregularities under Ahmad’s leadership. The report was ordered by FIFA while it effectively took over running the organization for six months.

CAF appeared to pay about $100,000 for 18 people, including Ahmad and the heads of some of the continent’s 54 national member federations, to travel on the pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

The CAF election is scheduled for March 12 in Rabat, Morocco.

Ahmad had been supported by FIFA leaders in Zurich when he was elected in 2017, ousting FIFA senior vice president Issa Hayatou after 29 years.
