WAEC Conducts Exams In Chibok Schools After 6 Years

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has successfully conducted the 2020 Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in senior secondary schools in Chibok in Borno six years after closure due to insurgency.

Brig.-Gen. Abdul-Khalifa Ibrahim, Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division, Nigerian Army, disclosed this while playing host to members of Education in Emergency Working Group Nigeria (EiEWGN), on Thursday in Maiduguri.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Chibok schools were closed after over 200 students were abducted by the Boko Haram terrorists from the Government Girls Secondary School in 2014.

While the Federal Government has secured the release of some of the abducted girl, others are still in the terrorist captivity till date.

Ibrahim, who is also the Commander Sector 1, Operation Lafiya Dole, was represented by the Chief of Staff of the division, Brig.-Gen. Ifeanyi Otu.

He said the insurgency conflict had its foundation on the detest for western education by the Boko Haram sect, adding that it had had an unimaginable impact on education in the North East.

According to him, we want to thank God that the conflict in the entire North East has been brought under control.

“We are all witnesses to what happened in the recent past like the abduction of the Chibok girls, the slaughtering of students at Buni Yadi and abduction of students at Dapchi.

“These are all that happened and we have turned around that narrative.

“It will be gladdening to note that for the first time in the past six years, WAEC successfully held WASSCE in Chibok with the military providing security,’’ he said.

Ibrahim said that the Nigerian army had continued to support the resuscitation of education in the northeast while fighting to secure the region from insurgents.

According to him, after the capture of Gwoza, the Nigerian army had to integrate the teachers taking refuge into teaching the children there and have been paying them since then.

He added that the division recently donated books to some schools in IDPs camps in Borno as well as renovating some school as part of an effort to resuscitate education in the state.

Ibrahim disclosed that about 70 per cent of the schools that were being occupied by soldiers due to the conflict had been relinquished, adding that efforts were being made to relinquish the remaining 30 per cent.

“Let me equally say that the Chief of Army Staff has been making a deliberate effort through the education corps to post in teachers to all schools within the northeast states.

“We are really doing enough to ensure that education is resuscitated and as we all know, education is one thing that liberates the individual and liberates the minds.

“In the first place, this conflict would not have thrived if not that there was high illiteracy rate in this zone,’’ he said.

The GOC commended the group for their effort towards ensuring that schools in the North East were resuscitated, assuring of the Nigerian army’s commitment to supporting actualising of the initiative.

Earlier, Dr Afolake Taiwo, Leader of Delegation, EiEWGN and Director Education, Ministry of Defence, said the purpose of the visit was to sensitise the division on the celebration of International Day of protecting education against attack.

Taiwo said the visit was also to thank the army for the good work as well as advocate for more support in protecting education against attack, adding that education had been under attack in the North East.

According to her, we all know that when education is under attack, then the nation is also under a siege because no nation can grow without education.

“So we are passionate about making sure that our education is not under attack and this is actually coming from the Safe School Declaration (SSD) that was signed by the president.

“Under it are many aspects such as security, human rights and international support and the defence is actually in charge of the security.

“I want to thank the military for their support for education and making sure that they deal with the insurgency and defend the Nigerian territory as well as working hard to make sure that schools resume immediately,’’ she said.

Taiwo also commended the men of Nigerian Army Education Corps for the deployment of personnel to classrooms in the insurgency ravaged areas of the northeast.

Also, Brig.-Gen. Michael Ajala, Director at Nigerian Army Resource Centre and member of the group, commended the group for their commitment to restoring education in the northeast.

Ajala explained that the occupation of schools by the military in the northeast was in line with the SSD requirements that allow the military to make use of schools as bases in extreme conflict situations.

He added that the new super camp strategy of the army had led to the relinquishing of schools by the military.

He said the deployment of military teachers to schools as part of the Nigerian army’s civil-military relations.

Quest For Biafra: No Retreat, No Surrender – Kanu

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has vowed not to retreat from, or surrender, the struggle for an independent state of Biafra. The leader of the proscribed Biafra agitation group made the declaration while reacting to a recent statement by the former governor of Abia state and senate chief whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, in which the lawmaker claimed that he was capable of convincing Kanu to stop the Biafra campaign.

Uzor-Kalu had boasted, in a statement released in Abuja, that the IPOB leader would listen to him. According to him, “If the federal government permits me, I will go to the United Kingdom and negotiate with Nnamdi Kanu to return to Nigeria. I will convince him to drop the agitation for Biafra because our people don’t need it,” Kalu had said.

Kanu fired a riposte, in a Radio Biafra broadcast, last Wednesday evening, Mazi Kanu, warning that anybody trying to convince him to drop the idea of Biafra would be dealt with. According to him, the 2019 attack on former senate president, Ike Ekwerenmadu, in Nurenberg, Germany by IPOB members would be a child’s play to Uzor-Kalu or any other individual that would try to talk him out of the Biafra campaign.

“Anybody coming to me with the intention of convincing me to drop the idea of Biafra, I can assure you (that) what happened to Ike Ekweremadu will be a child’s play to such an individual. This is the era of saboteurs and we must be very careful.”

Kanu further warned that he had not mandated anybody to speak on his behalf over meeting with the Nigerian government, or any intermediaries, to negotiate cessation of the Biafra agitation. He added that he would meet the Nigerian government only if it is to show them the boundaries of “Biafra land and to sign the necessary documents.”

The IPOB leader also raised alarm over the activities of Fulani herdsmen in Enugu state, warning residents of the five south east zone states to be on alert. “These Fulani terrorists in uniform, in their warped thinking, were merely removing any potential threat to Fulani terrorists Miyetti Allah impending attack on Nimbo Uzo-Uwani. The same Nimbo Miyetti Allah attacked successfully four years ago with the help and encouragement of the three Fulani heads of security in Enugu state, they are poised to attack again.”

He said that “Fulani terrorists” had killed innocent young men, terrorised the Enugu state governor and the local chief of Emene into submission and were “now at liberty to enter Uzo-Uwani to commence another round of genocide.”

He expressed frustrations over the failure of prominent leaders in Enugu state to speak on the deteriorating security situation in the state. “Nnia Nwodo is from Enugu state; a few Facebook intellectual illiterates are from Enugu. Ike Ekweremadu is from Enugu. What are these people doing about this impending massacre, or are they, as usual, waiting for IPOB to defend Nimbo?”

Kanu equally reacted to the killing of a notorious militia leader, Terwase Agwaza, alias Gana by soldiers on Tuesday, describing it as an indication that Nigerian state actors could never be trusted. “Nothing good comes out from being a saboteur. Gana worked with Miyetti Allah terrorists for years. Though he is not Fulani, he helped Miyetti Allah terrorists kill and terrorise his own people, the Tiv. When the same Fulani he was serving so diligently took their Islamic conquest to his village, he then turned to a defender of his people. Only then did Fulani Aso Rock and Miyetti Allah decide to kill him.

“Nobody has ever killed a repentant Boko Haram on his way to graduation but this man willingly submitted himself to the army and they killed him for daring to work against Miyetti Allah’s terror agenda.”

He concluded that Agwaza’s killing was a lesson for every saboteur.

I Never Had Intention Of Going Into Ministry – Fr. Obimma

On August 6, 2020, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, parish priest of the Blessed Iwene Tansi Catholic Church, Umudika, Oyi local government area of Anambra state, and the spiritual director of the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, Uke, Idemili North local government area, marked his 9th year as a priest, having been ordained priest on August 6, 2011.

A priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, Fr. Obimma, fondly called Ebube-Muonso, (because of the works Holy Spirit does through him), no doubt, is one of the most notable priests around currently. Because he is believed to be a good friend of the Holy Spirit, his Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry becomes a choice bride for worshippers seeking miracles, deliverance, breakthroughs and political power.

Born August 18, 1980 in the family of Late Bathelomew Obiechina Obimma and Mrs Grace Obimma of Uruebo village, Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi local government area of Anambra state, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma is the last in a family of seven boys. In this interview with MOKWUGWO SOLOMON, Fr. Obimma discusses why he opted for priesthood, his adoration ministry, among other salient issues.

How would you describe your upbringing?

I had a decent upbringing under my father, Late Mr. Bartholomew Obimma, a Charismatic in the Catholic Church, and my mother, Mrs Grace Obimma, who is a Legionary. Both parents lived their lives in line with Catholic doctrine and in the fear of God; they imparted good morals in me. The morals they imparted in me caused me to be very much absorbed to the affairs of the church and the affairs of God. I spent my early days in the village, and went to the Ezunaka Primary School, Nkwelle-Ezunaka.

What aroused your interest to take to the priesthood as a vocation?

I took to priesthood as vocation because of the passion I have for the salvation of souls. I have great passion for the salvation of souls. I had always wanted to live for Christ. I want to live a life of sacrifice; that was why even during my primary school days, I could spend my last money to help indigent persons. Again, the childhood upbringing I had under my core Catholic parents also aroused my interest. As a child who attended mass regularly, looking at Catholic priests celebrate the Holy Mass, and blessing the Holy Eucharist, made me hungry to be one of them. It has been my childhood dream to be a priest, a servant of the Most High God who will be an intermediary between God and his people.

Because of this interest, I wrote entrance examination, passed, and enrolled into the St. Paul’s Seminary, Ukpor, in Nnewi South local government area of Anambra state, where I did my JSS1 – JSS3; then, headed to All Hallows Seminary, Onitsha, where I did my SS1-SS3. I later went to St. Pope John Paul Major Seminary, Awka, and the Blessed Iwene Tansi Major Seminary, Onitsha; for my Philosophy and Theology studies, respectively, before I was ordained priest on August 6, 2011.

In less than a decade, you were able to establish the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, which is making waves all over the world. What is the magic wand?

The Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry was founded in October, 2011, at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, Uke, through the inspiration and direction of the Holy Spirit. When I was in the seminary, I never knew I would have a ministry as big as this. In fact, I never had the intention of going into ministry. However, before my ordination, I had an encounter with the Holy Spirit.

Flood Sweeps Away Apprentice Trader In Onitsha

n apprentice teenage trader, who fell into a water channel while trying to flee from heavy downpour has been reportedly swept away by flash flood at the Ochanja Market round-about axis in Onitsha, the commercial nerve center of Anambra state.

Orient Weekend gathered that the heavy down pour of that Tuesday afternoon caused flooding, which submerged the entire vicinity. According to a witness, trouble started for the teenage boy met his untimely death in his desperate bid to escape from the shop where he was trapped during the heavy rainfall at about 4.30pm that fateful day.

“As he stepped on the plank that was used to cross the gutter, the plank served as bridge or link between the shop and the road, it (the plank) broke and he fell into the deep gutter and was washed away by the speeding flood into Nwangene River.

Our correspondent was informed that efforts to rescue the boy by sympathisers failed. “Some sympathisers defied the rain and put some planks and other heavy objects into the gutter to cause obstruction and possibly stop the body of the boy from being swept down into the river, but he was not seen again, ”the source said.

He further disclosed that a search party that composed of traders and some motorists who went up to Nwangene river to know if they would recover the corpse later returned empty handed. It was gathered that the development caused heavy traffic grid-lock for over two hours.

Efforts made to get the master trader to the boy proved abortive as his identity was not immediately ascertained; but a trader, who claimed the victim was an apprentice trader, could not give further detail.

Another trader, who pleaded anonymity, however, told Orient Weekend that, “some years ego, similar development occurred in same place and it has reoccurred again.

“We tried to know if we could get the dead body; but to no avail. I mercy for the boy, who I did not know what he was pursuing that made him to try to defy the heavy rainfall that brought this flood that submerged the road and shops and finally led to his death.

“He would have allowed the rain to subside before stepping out of the shop and who knew if he sustained injury when he fell in the flood to carry him away without any resistance.”

As at the time of filling this report, his corpse has not been recovered.
