6 Important Things To Do To Protect Your Bank Account From Scam

In April this year, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued a fraud alert to the Nigerian public about the alarming rate of cybercrime activities in the country. Since COVID-19 happened, cybercriminals have been on the rampage, defrauding citizens, stealing sensitive information, and gaining unauthorised access to electronic gadgets by all means necessary to them.

Below are six simple but useful ways gathered by DAILY TIMES that can help you secure your bank account and make it impregnable for scammers.

1) Never disclose sensitive information to anyone over the phone, via SMS, email, or in person.

Banks and various platforms are not oblivious of these, hence, the introduction of two-step verification to provide multiple channels of verifying your identity in case scammers gain access to one of the multiple access. Amidst all these, they still subtly masquerade themselves in appealing forms to retrieve sensitive details from you via phone calls, SMS, E-mail, or even in person.

The rule is simple. Never reveal your card number, OTP, Pin, or password to anyone over the phone, via SMS, email, or in person. Do not do this, even when the person requesting such details claim to be from your bank’s headquarters. Also, desist from clicking suspicious links or downloading attachments and apps from unknown sources.

Your bank will never call you with ‘080, 070, 090, etc’ kind of number. Also, they’ll never ask you for your ATM pin or ask you to disclose any information you just received via SMS or whatever. Most banks in Nigeria communicate via email.

2) Avoid the use of unsecured internet access

Do not perform sensitive financial transactions using public wifi or networks you do not know the source. Do not let your love for free things expose you to risks. Instead, use a secure connection whenever you perform online transactions. Scammers take advantage of this and tap into your electronic device to illegally access sensitive information.

3) Inspect the ATM machine

Another common way scammers now use to gain access into your bank account is by installing a ‘skimmer’ over the card reader in the ATM. A skimmer captures the data on your card when you place it into the machine. The scammers then use that data to create a dummy card, which can also be used to access your account.

Skimmers are not always obvious as they are built to blend in with ATMs but you need to be actively looking for them. So before you place your card into the card reader, always check the ATM for any signs of tampering, including scratches and marks; anything that looks out of place, for instance, different coloured plastic around the card slot; anything that moves when it’s pushed (ATMs are built well and don’t usually have loose parts).

If you notice anything suspicious, report it to the financial institution that owns the ATM and use another machine. Skimmers don’t restrict the ATM from dispensing cash. Its aim is to collect your card details.

4) Keep your card out of the sight of unfamiliar/suspicious faces

Not all card-related scams happen at the ATM. Another common place for scammers to steal your card information is at places you go to chill out or have unfamiliar faces like a restaurant or shop. This could involve a waiter subtly taking your card away from your table to create a dummy card. Alternatively, a store attendant may skim your details while it’s behind their desk. Never let anyone take your card out of your sight.

DISCLAIMER: Family members can also gain access to your bank accounts without your permission. So, keep an eye on them and your card too.

5) Check your balance regularly

Check your account balance regularly. Go through your transactions and make sure your account balance correlates with what you’ve received and withdrawn. If you operate a joint account, let your partner do the same. Banks are usually quite effective at detecting suspicious activity on their customers’ accounts. But they’re not always perfect. This will limit the possibility of your account being compromised. If you ever notice anything suspicious call your bank or financial institution immediately.

6) Stay vigilant

Finally, scammers rely on targeting their victims when they’re distracted or when they least expect it. For that reason, many bank card breaches happen in crowded places (such as busy malls), when we’re enjoying ourselves (such as bars and restaurants) or when we’re out of our comfort zone (such as when we’re overseas).

For that reason, you should always be especially cautious when you’re at your most vulnerable. If you notice fraudulent activity on your bank account, notify your financial institution immediately so that your card can be put on hold or canceled.

Disclosing this to newsmen, the spokesperson of the state police command, Haruna Mohammed, said Ogbonna took Bella to Dollar Inn motel in Ihite in Orumba South local government area to lodge. He said while they lodged in their hotel room, the suspect allegedly used a knife to stab Bella and was attempting to cut off her breast when her cry for help was heard by the motel manager who came to her rescue.

Nanka Monarch, PG Dismiss Chieftaincy Crisis Rumours

The traditional ruler of Nanka Community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo and the President General of Nanka Patriotic Union (NPU), Chief Paul Chinedu have dismissed rumours of a chieftaincy crisis in the community.

The Nanka monarch and the PG made the clarification during a press conference at the Igwe’s palace, Ifite Nanka. The press conference which was on behalf of the entire Nanka people, home and abroad, comprising and ably represented from the Indigenous seven villages: Agbiligba, Enugwu, Ifite, Amako, Umudala, Ubahu and Etti was held to correct the erroneous impression created at an earlier press conference by one Sir. Ben Okeke said to be representing the Ezeokweghi/Ezeofor Ward/family on the 18th of August, 2020.

According to a statement read by PG, Chinedu: ” Nanka Community condemns the inaccurate and fallacious impression by Sir Ben Okeke in his press conference claiming there is leadership crisis in Nanka.

“The purveyors of such claims who are self seeking and self serving, represent only themselves in their quest to corner the chieftaincy stool of Nanka, thereby positioning their generations to be kings forever. Ezeokweghi/Ezeofor family is just one administrative ward out of twenty three operational wards recognized by the NPU and Nanka Town Union and Chieftaincy Constitution 2011.

“The key important provision of Nanka Constitution which include that of 1977 and 2011 states that ‘Chieftaincy at Nanka is not hereditary…’ the later provided for democratic and rotational Chieftaincy Stool in Nanka.

“It may interest you to note that Chief Sir. C. C. Obele and Sir. Ben Okeke as representatives of the Ezeokweghi/Ezeofor family participated in the meetings that produced the draft which was the harmonization of Nanka Chieftaincy Constitution 1977 and NPU Constitution 1990 that later became the 2011 Constitution.

“The Nanka Town Union and Chieftaincy Constitution, 2011 became the extant law in the administration of affairs in Nanka. Moreover, Igwe Gilbert Oformata as the Grand Patron was in attendance. Chief Ben Okeke and their Ezeokweghi/Ezeofor Ward fully participated when the 2011 constitution was used to elect NPU officers,” they said.

In his remarks, Igwe Ezeilo said that Crisis in Nanka Community was a figment of Sir Ben Okeke and other few individuals’ warped imagination.

“It is bad Sir Ben Okeke did not state that he and his backers initiated the suit which triggered other cases that have so far woefully failed to give semblance of crisis in Nanka.

Moreover, one of Nanka’s legal advisers and Harmonization Committee head, Barr Clifford Iloegbunam Okoye argued that if Sir Ben Okeke and his cohorts alleged fraud and forgery of the 2011 Constitution, the accusers should provide the genuine 2011 Constitution from which it was forged from.

Ezeokweghi/Ezeofor Royal Family dissatisfied with the constitution accused the town union executives of foisting unacceptable constitution on the town, vowing that they would fight against the amended constitution, using all legal means.

The family also accused the union of misleading the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in ordering for indefinite suspension of cases in the court. They alleged that the constitution was not amended by the town but was tinkered by few selected individuals who wanted to create crisis and tension in the town for their selfish interest.

The leader of family, Chief Ben Okeke said during a press briefing in Awka, Anambra State capital that after the purported amendment of the constitution, the then traditional ruler refused to signed it because it was inconsistent with the tradition and custom of the town.

According to him, on presentation of the purported amended constitution to the public , the family reported cases of forgery to the police which was investigated those responsible were charged to court.

He stated that in 2011, four indigenes of the town, in a bid to thwart the will of the people, forged Nanka Patriotic Union constitution, merged two villages, depriving them chance of producing a monarch.

Woman Contests 3-Yr-Old Son With Gov Umahi’s Aide

Miss Ifeoma Chukwu, a single parent, is currently locked in a court battle with the Ebonyi State Ministry of women Affairs and the Special Assistant to Ebonyi Governor on Women Affairs, Mr. Steve Ali over custody of her three-year-old son, Chukwuemeka.

The 37-year-old Miss Chukwu from Abba town in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State lost custody of her child after birth following a brief mental illness. She later launched a bid for the restoration of her child to her after full recovery from her health challenge.

According to the embattled mother, September 23, 2020, would make it four years since she last saw her child after she was delivered of the baby in the Ebonyi state capital due to the health challenge and legal encumbrance that had prevented her from giving him the much-needed motherly care.

Orient Weekend gathered that efforts to recover the boy now more than three years old have so far proved abortive, following the refusal of Mr. Ali, who initially took custody of the child, to relinquish him. Despite a recent court ruling that mandated the ministry to recover the toddler from the governor’s aide and release him to the mother, Ali and his lawyer had stuck to their guns and had reportedly challenged the verdict.

Unexpected tragic twist

Ifeoma was full of tears when she shared her experiences, the circumstances that led to the pregnancy out of wedlock and how events beyond her control forced her and the child to part ways after her delivery.

“When I finished my NYSC, I developed mental sickness. I used to hear voices telling me to flee from home. As I ran away from home, I was raped by one man and I became pregnant.

“While in Ebonyi state, I was sleeping under the bridge because of the mental sickness. I later gave birth to a baby boy under the bridge. Some people that saw me, took me to a nearby hospital. There in the hospital, they took my baby to a new born unit where they were attending to him.

“They gave me serious medical attention and I returned to my normal senses and recovered fully. When I recovered, I went to them to give me my baby but they refused. Because I didn’t have anybody around me, I left the baby in the hospital and went home. When I came back to collect my baby with my people, they said that they gave my baby to one man (Mr Steve Ali) for adoption.

The ministry involvement

Orient Weekend was told that shortly after the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs took the baby away from the ailing mother and handed him over to the Special Assistant to Ebonyi Governor on Women Affairs, Mr Steve Ali and his wife Martina Chito Ali for custody.

Trouble started when Ifeoma regained her mental health and demanded for her baby. Mr. and Mrs Ali refused to release the baby, claiming that they had adopted the child. Efforts by the ministry to persuade the couple to relinquish the child fell on deaf ears as they reportedly dragged the case to court.

The case suit No. HAB/77/2019, presided over by the Ebonyi State Chief Judge, Justice A. A. Nwaigwe, reached a turning point on June 17, 2020 when the court ruled against the couple and in favor of the ministry.Part of the judgment stated that the ministry should use any means to recover the baby for return to the mother, Ifeoma.

Ebonyi State Commissioner for women Affairs, Mrs Rebecca Ogbuewu disclosed that efforts by the ministry to recover the baby from Mr Ali had been unsuccessful. “Everybody is working towards recovering the baby. We have written a reminder to the police to recover the child,” she said.

She recalled how she personally appealed to the couple to release the child to the mother when she returned with a letter of intent to take her child back after making full recovery.“I had a meeting with the biological mother and the foster parent in my office. After the meeting late Mrs. Ali, who was a lawyer, told me that she was not going to hand over the child to the ministry. I told her that if she argued the case till the end of the world, she would not win. But she said that she was heading to court.

“Since last year the case has been in the court and once a case is in the court, we had nothing to do than to wait. So, sometime last month, the judgment came out and was in favour of the ministry. I waited for Mr. Ali to bring back the child. We wrote to him to bring back baby Chukwuemeka to the ministry but we didn’t see him or the child. I wrote to the police to help us recover the child after the judgment.

“I later heard that they went to appeal the case. Courts are not in session, that’s why it looks as if we are stuck. I have written to the commissioner of police again that it is their duty to recover that child, whether Supreme Court or not, a court has given judgment. Let the child be released to us from there we can do whatever is necessary. We are doing our best. It is left for police to do their own job,” she added.

The commissioner admitted that the ministry has no right to give out a child for adoption, but “we have the right to foster a child and the foster parents did not complete the process of adoption”.

Ogbuewu went further: “Before you foster a child in this ministry we have a handout that has all the rules guiding it and we must give it to you to study. He, Mr. Ali, is one of us here. He knows everything about fostering a child. He has the handout.

She denied signing any document granting Mr. Ali full custody of the child. “I have the right to sign any document before fostering or adoption of a child and I have not signed anything for adoption, if there is any I don’t know.

The commissioner further disclosed that the ministry made efforts to address the matter. “When this thing was happening, personally I went to the wife for the first time and pleaded. I said, please, you are a lawyer, you know what is right, you know what is involve and the woman kept saying the same thing. I noticed that the woman was the one fine-tuning the whole matter. Now, the woman is no more (late) and Steve is still going the same way. I cannot say I know him 100 per cent.

Last battle line

Ifeoma’s sister, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Nzenwa, disclosed that since efforts by the ministry to secure release of the child has so far proved abortive, despite a favourable judgment, her sister had run to the National Human Rights Commission for help in rescuing her biological son from Mr Ali.

“The Ministry of Women Affairs ordered us to come and collect our baby since the court has ordered the release of the child but Steve Ali’s lawyer said no ruling on the matter had been served them, that they had not seen the court judgment and that they had appealed the judgment. Now, our lawyer has directed us to go to National Human Rights Commission to report the matter. It is up to the commission, the ministry and the police to help us get our child back from Mr Ali,” she said.

When contacted on phone, Mr. Ali told our correspondent that he had briefed his lawyer on the next line of action on the matter and warned our reporter not to write anything bad concerning him.

The Ebonyi State Co-ordinator of the National Human Rights Commission, Mr. Onyekachi Okorie said the commission would investigate the matter before taking any action. “The law is very clear on the issue of adoption or even fostering. This is so clear and very direct and from the documents before us, the court has equally ruled in this regard. The National Human Rights Commission will ever stand behind the rule of law and for whatever is in the best interest of the child. The child has a right to its identity, the child has a right to its root and we must ensure that this is done,” it said.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State Command, DSP Loveth Odah said the police was handicapped because the accused person Mr. Ali had appealed the judgment which ruled in favour of the ministry.

“If it should be an illegal adoption, I think the police should have known from the beginning, because such a matter should have been reported to the police in writing. They took a civil action against the accused person before coming to the police. When they came to the police on this matter, it made the police to be handicapped because a court of competent jurisdiction was already on the matter.

Odah assured that the police would swing into action once the court dispenses judgment on the matter. “As soon as the magistrate or the judge takes action on the matter and maybe the judgment is in favour of the complainant, we can go ahead and investigate and receive the baby from the foster parents to the real”.

Lyrics: What would be your first point in trying to change the mindset of a youth out there?

Isreal Ekene: First thing as a youth we have to believe that “ We Can”. You have to develop confidence in yourself . Your Attitude matters it is not about the platform(APC PDP etc) it is about yourself.

Lyrics: When will you consider to be an early time to start?

Isreal Ekene: Once you understand you rights as a youth. As for me between the age bracket of 20 to 40. You must not occupy a political seat before you start making impact in your community. You have to start from your little environment. If you are a student what influence are you having on your fellow students .whatever platform you find yourself prove that quality of leadership in you.

Winifred: Would you say that there is high involvement and participation of youth in good governance and politics in Ebonyi state?

Isreal Ekene: I will say YES! Because according to my own point of view ,Ebonyi State current government is operating on 70% appointive Position and Elective Position 45% Because at the state house of Assembly majority of them are between the age bracket of 35 to 40.

Lyrics: Are seeing any room for continuity of such or is it just going to end in this very government tenor?

Isreal Ekene: Yes there is room for continuity. The current deputy Governor is 51years as of three months ago. I see him as a youth because the strength is there the agility is there.
Winifred: Has there been change as regards to other government ruling years to this very dispensation where youths are the one ruling?

Isreal Ekene: Yes I will say yes . Currently with what we have in Ebonyi state. The next election will not just be political parties, more youths will come out to contest.

Winifred: Don’t you think enough funding will be a problem for some who wants to start?

Isreal Ekene; You have to create a name for yourself. The Era of materialism in politics is drastically fading out because people can collect your material things and still vote for whom they want to vote for.

We should prepare ourself, how much do we know about politics how much do we know about leadership, we should be able deliver from within not just shouting party slogans or reading manifestoes .
People will want to hear “I have done this”. Not “I will do this”
It musn’t be about resources, for example during this COVID19 pandemic , how many youths have you mobilized to tell them about this COVID19 in the area of sensitization what did you do?. There is need for us to develop ourselves.

Winifred: Do you think youths in Ebonyi are much in holding leaders accountable?

Isreal Ekene: I give them 20/100 in that aspect. And to improve we have to develop love and unite with each other.we have to harness our potentials and help those doesn’t have this leadership potentials in them.

What I am saying in essence is that we encourage ourself rather than give our resources to the already made elders. Let us see how we can encourage our fellow youths. Lets us come together as CSO’s , Civil servants Organisations, as people outside politic let us stop promoting political Party and start promoting those things that binds us together and those things that’s starves the strength we have as youths . as we do that holding our leaders accountable will not be far fetched.
