Edo Election: Ex-Speaker Urges Police Investigation Into Akoko-Edo Shooting
The former Speaker of Edo House of Assembly, Kabiru Adjoto, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to ensure thorough investigation into Friday’s shooting in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.
Adjoto made the call on Monday at a news briefing in Benin, saying that proper investigation into the incident as well as the arrest and prosecution of the suspects would help to forestall future attacks on Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members and supporters.
He described the attack as condemnable and urged President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently call to order those fueling violence in the state ahead of the upcoming governorship poll.
He said: “On Friday, at Ekpe Ward 3 and Ososo community in Akoko-Edo, PDP members and supporters were attacked by gunmen.
“Violence is not the way forward and crisis is not healthy for Nigeria’s democracy.
“What happened has further strengthened our resolve to vote for Gov. Godwin Obaseki because he has worked and Edo people want him to continue.
“What we need is peace, free and fair election. You can only be a governor for the living not the dead.
“It is not a do-or-die affair. At the end of the election, one person will emerge as governor for the living,” he said.
Also, the Akoko-Edo PDP Chairman, Kayode Ogunnubi, said that 16 persons from Ekpe and Ososo communities sustained gunshot wounds during the attack.

Army Conducting House-To-House Search For IPOB Members After Enugu Killings – Survivor
One of the survivors of the attack against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO by the joint personnel of the police and the Department of State Security (DSS) says he had to run into a Catholic church to escape shooting from the security agents during the killing of their members in Emene, Enugu State, last week.
The IPOB member, who witnessed the attack, said he knew 15 persons who were killed that day by the Nigerians security forces.
“They attempted to shoot me,” the IPOB member, who did not want to be named, said. “One of the DSS officials ran after me as I was running into a Catholic church. The reverend father protected me.”
The survivor said contrary to claims by the police and the DSS that the IPOB first attacked the law enforcement agents, the youth only picked up sticks and stones to defend themselves after they were shot at. He said they were unarmed.
However, the security agencies said IPOB attacked them first with sticks that had nails, adding that they had been shot at by IPOP before they reinforced.
The survivor said when the police returned with reinforcements, they began harassing innocent persons in the neighbourhood.
They demanded to know where IPOB members, who escaped from Emene Community Secondary School where they were having a meeting, had run to.
“When they came the second time, they started arresting innocent youths that were not involved, asking where people ran to,” he said.
He said since the incident; security agents had been cracking down on IPOB members.
“They have been doing house-to-house searches, stopping people on buses, checking peoples’ phones,” he said. “If they see any Biafran symbol on your phone, they will arrest you. People cannot walk on the streets. They have been patrolling everywhere.”
A woman who lives in the neighbourhood where the killings happened in Emene told SaharaReporters that the law enforcement agents appeared to be scared of a protest by IPOB.
“The army guys were wrong. They are the ones who shot first. They set up a roadblock along the Abakaliki Expressway in Enugu. They have been searching any youths they see in transit,” the woman, who is not a member of IPOB but craved anonymity, said.
She said Emene had been calm since the killings. “IPOB guys have never carried arms. They don’t act violently or harass people. Even though they want Biafra, they know they have to maintain the peace,” she said.
IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu who jumped bail in Nigeria and now lives abroad, is seeking the independent state of Biafra that would comprise the territories that were old eastern Nigeria before the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War between 1967 and 1970.
IPOP has endured numerous killings of its members by the Nigerian armed forces as documented by Amnesty International.
Despite not bearing arms or killing people, the Nigerian government branded IPOB a terrorist organisation and outlawed it. (SaharaReporters)

Adeboye, Visits President Buhari In Aso Rock
General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Monday visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.
Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, disclosed this via his verified Twitter handle.
“President @MBuhari receives in audience General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (@rccghq), @PastorEAAdeboye, at the State House, Abuja,” he said.
The meeting reportedly took place in the President’s official office.
Adeboye had earlier in the year joined other leaders in the country to condemn rising insecurity across Nigeria.
He led members of his church on a protest march in Lagos to register his displeasure at the situation.
Earlier this month, Christian leaders slammed President Buhari’s government for introducing the Company and Allied Matters Act, which empowers a federal ministry and Corporate Affairs Commission to regulate the affairs of churches.
The topic is still a burning subject and it is believed that it could form part of Adeboye and Buhari’s discussion during the cleric’s visit to the Presidential Villa on Monday. (SaharaReporters)
