Time Has Come For Every Lecturer To Be Both Parent And Teacher… Okunna

Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna is a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. She is the first female professor in Mass communication in Nigeria, a former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Anambra State, in the former Governor Peter Obi’s administration. Besides serving in the university as an educationist, Professor Okunna has also served as an administrator in the public/political arena. In this discussion with ADA NWANAGUM, the Consultant to the United Nations Agencies expresses her passion for her job, her love for every woman who survives the Nigerian culture and her challenge as a role model to other women. Excerpts:

Background

Being as old as I am and as long as my tenure has been, I can say l have had a long and very fulfilling career and life. I think I had been privileged family wise because my father, Mr Joshua Obinali Adimora from Uga town, was a very distinguished civil servant. He served in the local government administration and rose to the pinnacle of his career, becoming the first black District Officer (D.O.) in Aguata area, back in the fifties, during the colonial rule. He was very intelligent and became the white man’s interpreter which was quite privileged. I also remember our life as a family in Ekwulobia where I was born, at the Aguata County Council where my father was the head of the council (what is now known as the Local Government Chairman). As his children, we were privileged. I remember back then in the late fifties when my father was the only one who had a transistor radio where everyone within would come to listen to programmes and news

I am from Uga town in Aguata Local Government by birth and married to Dr. Eric Okunna Eze, from Ukpo town in Dunukofia Local Government. He is a medical practitioner who owns a private hospital in Enugu State called Ricstella Hospital and Maternity.

Education

I began my primary school at St John’s Primary School, Ekwulobia (an Anglican Mission School), and at the end of 1959 my dad was transferred to Port-Harcourt municipal council where he became the Deputy Town Clerk (second to the highest authority, Town Clerk). I then went to finish my primary education at Township School, Port-Harcourt. After my primary education I attended Anglican Girls Grammar School, now known as Girls High School, Awkunano for my secondary education after which l proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka for my first degree. I got married to my husband immediately after my Youth Service. Later, l was admitted to the University of Leicester in England, Center for Mass Communication Research, for my master’s degree. I had wanted to continue there but I couldn’t because I had to come back home to build the family. I obtained my PhD at the University of Lagos, Mass Communication Department. Before then (about 1998), I think all PhDs were studied abroad. The likes of Akinfela, Shobowale, Nneli, and others who had PhD in Mass communication studied and obtained the degrees abroad, mainly from the US. My set was the first PhD in Mass communication from any Nigerian university. Since then I haven’t looked back. It has been a very challenging but a rewarding career. I began teaching mass communication at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Enugu. From there I was transferred to Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 1994 and had remained till date. As l always say, it has been a challenging but rewarding career.

I married quite early and God blessed me quite early, like my parents. I have four wonderful children, two sons and four daughters and they all have good education. I have a medical doctor, two engineers, a pharmacist, a computer scientist and a public health administrator (a PhD in Public Health).

As we prepare to bow out, so to say, I have established what I call Professor Okunna’s Mentees’ Group. It is a mentoring group of young lecturers of about 10 universities across the nation where we are doing a big book like a teaching text for media and communication and many of these young people have written chapters as contributions.

Growing up

Growing up was fun and disciplined because my parents were great disciplinarians especially my Mum. I am the second of six children in the family (4 girls, 3 boys) and my elder sister, Professor Akachi Adimora Ezigbo is also a professor of Literature and English and a writer too. My dad and I were particularly close. My mum w as very stringent because she taught my Read More:

BB Naija 2020: Nigerians React

It is said that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, so the assessment of the BB Naija reality TV show differs from one person to another.

According to Wikipedia, reality television is a genre of television programming that documents purportedly unscripted real-life situations, often starring unknown individuals rather than professional actors. This entails the illumination of the true nature of the participants.

The BB Naija show is the most viewed reality show in Nigeria with millions of subscribers and followers ranging from youths to aged adults. The N85 million prize attached to this year’s edition has made the show a talk of the town.

Just like any issue of national concern, BB Naija is not without mixed reactions, some giving credence to the show and others ruling against it.

However, Orient Daily, due to the recent clamour by stakeholders to shut down the show, conducted an investigation to sample the views of some members of the public on the programme.

Indications are that even as many as those who want the show terminated are high, the number of those who are die-hard fans increase geometrically.

To Love Okenyi, the General Manager, Java Global Concept, Umuahia, the show is never supposed to be criticized because it is a lucrative business for the sponsors and organizers. She noted that she doesn’t look at it from the morality angles. She sees somebody’s business growing speedily and should not be cut short.

Her words: “No time to judge them. Multichoice is doing business, finish.”

Speaking with this paper, Amara Iwuchukwu, a business woman and social media influencer from Port Harcourt noted that the TV show is just like a scripted movie people watch for relaxation and so shouldn’t be attacked.

“The world is too serious with the Coronavirus outbreak and different economic issues here and there. There is the need for relaxation. I see BB Naija as a medium to reduce stress”

“The N85 million prize is not also a waste of resources. It is not easy for someone to put about three months of his/her Iife on hold for another person’s business, so having that amount as a reward is not bad. There are lots of opportunities in this show. Aside the fact that the contestants will become ambassadors to different brands, fans also get to meet people who can help them. For the morality issue, it is an individual thing. There are many contestants who don’t get clingy with the opposite sex. Those who misbehave there often get the punishment immediately, so, the show, to me, is nice.”

In a media chat, Vivian Nnaemeka, a fashion designer residing at Ado-Ekiti, noted that the show is not bad, only that it helps to reveal the level of moral decadence among Nigerian youth and that the youth should concentrate on themselves individually.

“With or without BB Naija, immorality is already deep rooted in our society. But in my humble opinion, I really don’t think it is a crap. Although people say money is wasted voting, but I think it is a way of making Nigerians gather to contribute to others’ progress. Besides, it is not that the show is a show for immorality it is just that most of the people there have poor discipline. I cannot imagine going there and doing half of what those idiots do. It reveals how corrupt Nigerian youths as a whole are. It shows us (youths) where we are lacking”

Orient Daily also spoke to Alex Anyakorah and Precious Chinecherem, who are students of the University of Nigeria and the Nnamdi Azikiwe University respectively. Anyakorah stated that there was nothing wrong with the TV show and that it was the only Nigerian TV programme he derives pleasure watching. While Chinecherem noted that even though the TV show is not too godly to be celebrated, but it aids lots of businesses in the country and indirectly generates revenues for the country’s economy.

A clergyman, Pastor Chukwudi Dike from Christ Holy Church International, Owerri referred to the reality TV show as a dirty show. He decried the attitude of rich individuals and companies who spend huge sum to sponsor such a show where, according to him, satanic activities are enthroned.

“If only there could be an educating version of this programme, if only they could house some intelligent people in like manner and make them compete for similar prizes. But, no! Our people do not encourage sanity. Our society promotes evil over good, indecency over decency, immorality over morality, and ungodliness over godliness.

“The best in Mathematics competitions will go home with either a carton of cowbell milk or Indomie noodles, ridiculous stipends and laughable prizes. Yet, these morons in BBN will earn millions for coming to speak thrash, display nudity, and get under the sheets on international TVs… What a wasted generation! What a time! How do we raise, nurture and produce the next Chike Obis, Chinua Achebes, Wole Soyinkas, Cyril stoveetc…Nigeria is broke morally and financially, yet the sponsors are wasting millions of Naira on a highly immoral programme. Please what is the lesson that one can learn from this Big Brother show? What can our youths pick from it?” Dike asked.

Promise Amalaha, the band leader of the Umuobiligbo duo, stated that the level of corruption in Nigeria has made it such that being truthful and responsible won’t add to anyone’s finance.

“The hunger to seek for moral values and stay true to it, is quenching rapidly, as it seems not to draw the attentions and credit beeps from banks and other financial endorsements. This is the biggest reason why the godly health of the world is deteriorating,” he said, adding:

“I need the N85million but I can’t trade my moral value on national/reality TV in order to have it,” he added.

Chinwe Ohadike, a civil servant in Anambra State, decried the reality TV show claiming that it has no benefit to Nigerian youths instead it tends to completely destroy the little moral value still evident in the Nigerian society.

“BBN is characterized with alcoholism, nudity, sex, entertainment and vulgarism. It has generated so many criticisms and condemnation from different individuals. The truth must be told because we cannot continue to nurture a society that invests huge amount of money on an iniquitous show like BBNaija and expect to groom a generation of cultured, disciplined and morally upright leaders.

“What moral values are the show transmitting to the youths today? It has made it clear to us that we are in a society where immorality and stupidity are rewarded with great and big prizes. Some individuals see the participants as human beings in the zoo pressured to behave like nothing but animals because the organizers of the show use them in making money and also legitimizing pornography,” she lamented.

While many were either in support of closing the reality show or leaving it, ChijiokeOnuorah was of a different opinion.

Onuorah lamented the selection of the BBN housemates over those who should truly benefit from the programme. According to him, the set of housemates selected for this year’s edition are rich youths from wealthy families whereas there are many talented and broke youths on street who truly need the money.

“How will someone who schooled abroad be selected to participate in the show, or someone who flew an aircraft to the city where the show is being hosted? This truly indicates cheating… These guys don’t need the money and they are not even as talented as many normal guys on the streets. It is not fair that poor masses will be collectively making the rich, richer. For me, I don’t have any issue with morality or immorality, mine is that the show should be meant to empower the poor and talented,” Onuorah said.

Analyses of responses gathered from the investigation showed that a large number of Nigerians watch or follow the reality TV show on social media.

However, suspension or termination of the TV show appears not to be the best idea, but rather reviewing the modus-operandi and activities in the show. Though the show is not meant for children under18, but due to lack of proper parental guidance in Nigeria many under-aged children watch and follow the show.

Police Recruitment: Entry Requirement Remain Sacrosanct – IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), M.A Adamu, has reassured Nigerians that the statutory entry requirements into the Nigeria Police Force remain sacrosanct and would be strictly followed in the ongoing Police recruitment screening exercise.

In a statement signed by the Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, and released yesterday in Abuja, the IGP said his reassurance to members of the public became necessary following fake reports making the rounds in some sections of the media that the leadership of the Nigerian Police Force had jettisoned the conventional entry requirement for the candidates.

While noting that that no one has the powers to alter the conditions for recruitment into the Force – these, having been clearly provided for in Sections 71 – 75 and other relevant sections of the Police Act and Regulations, the police boss said all candidates who successfully completed the online recruitment registration exercise were invited for physical and credential screening from 24th August, 2020 to 6th September, 2020 at various venues in States across the Federation and the FCT.

“The screening Officers have been directed to allow all the applicants to participate in the exercise and to recommend their suitability or otherwise in the spirit of transparency, accountability and fair hearing using the already established benchmarks as contained in the Act,” he said
The IGP commended the screening officers for the hitch-free take-off of the screening exercise at various locations nationwide.

He called on them to uphold high level of professionalism and observe necessary caution in line with the COVID-19 prevention regulations throughout the period of the exercise.
On the other hand, the IGP informed that, as part of conscious efforts to deepen the integrity of the recruitment process, observers and monitors from the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Police Service Commission and the Federal Character Commission have been invited to provide oversights toward ensuring a credible exercise.

Barca In New Turmoil After Messi Tells Club He Wants To Leave

Captain Lionel Messi has told Barcelona he wishes to leave the club immediately, a source confirmed on Tuesday, deepening the turmoil within the Catalan side less than two weeks after their humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich.

The source said the club received a burofax from Messi’s lawyers declaring that the player, who has spent his entire career at Barca, wished to leave.

A burofax is a service used in Spain to urgently dispatch a document through a certified email, which issues a digital certificate with legal validity.

The club subsequently sent Messi a burofax, stating they wanted him to stay and finish his career at Barca, added the source.

A second source added that the burofax Messi’s lawyers sent referred to a clause in the last contract the 33-year-old Argentine signed with the club in 2017 which allowed him to leave for free, a clause that expired on June 10 this year.

Under the terms of the contract which expires in 2021, the only way Messi can leave without the club’s consent is if a rival side pays his release clause of 700 million euros (629.7 million pounds).

“The club considers that the contract is fully binding until 30 June 2021,” added the second source.

The Argentine’s request to leave Barca comes a day after Spanish media reported that new coach Ronald Koeman told Messi’s close friend and strike partner, Luis Suarez, that he does not wish the Uruguayan to stay at the club.

Other reports said that Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal, Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic and French defender Samuel Umtiti have also been told they are no longer wanted.

Barca are in the midst of overhauling their squad following the 8-2 defeat by Bayern in the Champions League quarter-finals earlier this month, which condemned the club to a trophyless season for the first time in 12 years.

Messi, who has been named world player of the year a record six times, has grown increasingly unhappy in the last 12 months with how the club is being run under president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

In February, he lashed out at then sporting director Eric Abidal on social media and a couple of months later turned his anger on the club hierarchy for the way in which players were forced to take a pay cut to cope with the financial hit of the coronanvirus pandemic.

After Barca surrendered the La Liga title to Real Madrid in July, Messi slammed the team as being “weak” and “vulnerable” during an uncharacteristically fiery post-match interview.

Former Barca captain Carles Puyol backed Messi’s wish to leave the club by writing on Twitter: “Respect and admiration, Leo. You have all my support, friend.”

Ex-Barca president Joan Laporta blamed Bartomeu for the stance taken by Messi.

“Bartomeu and his board should quit immediately. They have undermined Messi to save them from the sporting and financial mess they have created. If they quit there might be some hope that Messi stays at Barca,” he tweeted.

Catalonia’s regional leader Quim Torra appeared to accept that Barca’s best ever player, who in 2019 was given the Creu de Sant Jordi award for services to the region, was about to leave.

He tweeted: “Catalonia will always be your home. Many thanks for all the happy moments and for your extraordinary football. We have been so lucky to share so many years of our lives with the best player in the world and a noble sportsman.” (Reuters/NAN).
