Four Family Members Die In Kerosene Explosion In C’River

Four persons were confirmed dead in Ikot Ekpo community, about eight miles from Calabar, the Cross River state capital when kerosene, suspected to have been adulterated, exploded Monday night, killing in the process, a 45-year-old man, two of his children and an in-law.

The name of the old man was given as Esuabana Thomas Okon while his two children who died with him were Okon Esua Thomas aged 14 and Edet Esua Thomas, 12. The In-law, Matthias, also perished in the inferno. They were indigenes of Ukwa Eburutu in Odukpani Local Government of the state.

Our reporter, who spoke with the landlord of the deceased and relation, gathered that Esuabana’s wife and his daughter survived the inferno.

In an interview, the landlord, Engineer Efiom Offiong Efanga, said he was not at home when the incident happened since he was yet to pack into his part of the apartment which was yet to be completed, and that an eyewitness drew his attention to the ugly development at about 10 pm.

“I had a call at about a minute to 10 O’clock that there was a fire outbreak in my compound. I had to rush down here. By the time I got here, the neighbours had succeeded in putting out the fire but they did not know initially that people had actually been burnt inside because it seemed there were no screams.

“It was after the fire was extinguished that we discovered three persons inside who were already dead. Another victim, who was also fatally burnt, was rushed to the hospital but he gave up the ghost on the way and so his dead body was brought back. The only survivor among the children is the daughter. I met her in that Church close to my compound, very frightened.

“She told me that the mum asked the elderly brother to refuel the lantern but the boy refused and went inside, and that after some minutes, the mum decided to send her to refuel the lantern and that as soon as she poured the kerosene into the already lit but dim lantern, there was a huge explosion, so she threw the lantern away and ran out. She said, the mother was outside easing herself when the explosion occurred.”

Also speaking, a relative to the Esuabanas, Mr Samuel Inyang, who said the explosion happened at about 9.30 described the incident as mysterious, adding that what surprised everyone was how the girl could run out while his father and the other three could not, even when the door was opened.

He said: “The incident happened in the kitchen. The four persons who died were in the room but we cannot explain why they could not run out of the door. How can our kerosene be exploding like bombs? It is a mystery that the door was opened but our brother and his children and in-law could not escape. The fire incident started in the kitchen, not the room, and they had every opportunity to have escaped but they could not. It is a mystery.”

Inyang, suspected that the kerosene might have been heavily adulterated, and further appealed to relevant government agencies to intensify efforts at bringing to an end the cases of petroleum bunkering which he said encouraged dealers to mix all types of things with kerosene.

“Bunkering kerosene is believed to be responsible for all these explosions. Government should rise to the occasion and save the lives of Nigerians,” he stated.

Rangers’ Aguda, Heartland’s Obioma On Abia Warriors Radar

Enugu Rangers talismanic forward, Godwin Aguda and Heartland’s Chijioke Obioma have emerged as big transfer targets of Abia Warriors as the 2020/2021 NPFL transfer period blossoms, Orient Sports can exclusively report.

Aguda has been a regular face in Rangers match day squad since joining the Flying Antelopes four seasons ago.

Orient Sports checks reveal Aguda has held talks with the hierarchy of the ambitious Umuahia side now with former U23 National Team manager, Imama Amapakabo as technical adviser.

“Aguda has agreed personal terms with Abia Warriors. All that is remaining is for him to sign his contract papers and that could happen any moment from now.

“Possibly, he could sign on Wednesday and if that happens, he would be unveiled same day”, a close confidant of the player told Orient Sports.

Similarly, Heartland’s striker, Chijioke Obioma has joined the list of high profile players on the shopping list of Abia Warriors ahead of the 2020/2021 domestic season.

Obioma caught the eyes of NPFL followers when he scored a brace as Heartland crushed Enyimba 2-0 in a league match during the 2019/2020 season.

Orient Sports understands that like Aguda, Obioma has agreed personal terms with Abia Warriors.

“Yes, Obioma has concluded talks with Abia Warriors. He has agreed personal terms with them as regards salary and other entitlements.

“No, I don’t know the contractual duration for now but he’s expected to sign on Wednesday.

“And if that happens, he would be unveiled immediately”, Orient Sports was told by one of his Rangers teammates.

The duo will join the likes of top performers, goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo, Nzube Anaezemba, Vincent Edafe, Markson Ojobo and former Mighty Jets strike sensation, Mustapha Jibrin as new arrivals at Abia Warriors.

The club have also promoted two undisclosed youth team players to the senior team as new manager, Imama Amapakabo continues to attract quality players to refresh the squad ahead the 2020/2021 NPFL season.

I’m Not Sure Of Messi’s Barça Future – Koeman

Argentina and Barcelona of Spain captain, Lionel Messi, now has his future at the Catalans in big doubt as new head coach Ronald Koeman says he does not know if he can convince Messi to stay after the Argentine reportedly threatened to quit following last week’s 8-2 Champions League humiliation by Bayern Munich.

Koeman left his job as Netherlands boss to sign a two-year deal with Barca following the sacking of Quique Setien, his first task being to try and secure Messi’s future after the club failed to win a trophy for the first time since 2007-08.

Spanish reports claims Messi cut short a holiday in the Pyrenees to tell Koeman his future was away from the Nou Camp.

“He’s still got a contract and is still a Barcelona player,” Koeman said.

“At this point I need to speak to him because he is the captain. We need to work with him and speak with various players. We need to make some decisions but in Messi’s case I hope he stays with us.

“He is the best player in the world and the best player in the world you want in your team, you don’t want him playing against you”.

Koeman, who played for Barcelona for six seasons, warned that any players who lack commitment or professionalism will be kicked out.

“What we need to do is give a different image to what we gave against Bayern, that’s not the Barca we or the fans want to see,” he told a press conference at his unveiling.

“We’re going to work very hard to build a strong team but we’ll have to make changes because the image of the other day is not what we want. We’ll have to work hard to recover our prestige.

“Barca are still the biggest club in the world. Now we have to work hard to make sure Barca gets back to where they should be. There is enough quality in the team to demand the best results and to win trophies”.

Alakwe Rules Out Pillars Summer Exit

Former FC ifeanyi Ubah captain, Chijioke Alakwe has exclusively told Orient Sports he’s not interested in leaving Kano Pillars for now.
Alakwe penned a two year contract with the four time League Champions, Kano Pillars, last season.

Amidst mounting pressure from several NPFL clubs, the fair skinned midfielder insists he wants to see off his contract at the Sai Masu Gida side.
“I always want want to respect every contract I signed”, starts Alakwe. “I signed a two year contract here (at Kano Pillars) when I came.
“And I want to honour it to the end before anything else.

“I don’t like running from club to club at the slightest opportunity. I’m aware of interests from other clubs on me for a move. But it’s not in my character to cut short my contract with a club.
“But if such offers are coming from overseas, then, it will go through the right and proper channel, in which case my club, in this case, Kano Pillars, would sanction it.
“For now, I’m a player of Kano Pillars until my contract with them runs it’s full course”.

Kano Pillars will fly Nigeria’s flag in next year’s CAF second tier inter club competition, Confederation Cup, following their 2019 Aiteo Cup triumph.

Lloyd Defects To PDP, Apologises For Assembly Brawl

Former leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly and a strong supporter of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, on Monday, dumped the All Progressives Congress [APC] and defected to the People’s Democratic Party [PDP].

He also expressed regret of his role in the 2013 crisis at the State House of Assembly during which a fight among the law makers led to serious injury to members, including Hon. Michael Chinda.

At a reception at the Government House by Governor Nyesom Wike and other PDP chieftains, Lloyd said he had learnt how to be benevolent in politics, among other things, from the governor. He promised that he and members of his community would, thenceforth, work for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In response, Governor Wike said politicians who bore bitterness in their minds against others hardly made progress and declared that his success in politics and governance could be traced to his never carrying any grudges against anybody.

He said that, during his second term inauguration, he asked for forgiveness from those he offended and also promised to forgive those that hurt him.

Today, he said, Dr. Chidi Lloyd has publicly expressed regret of his role in the 2013 crisis at the State House of Assembly and apologised. He said he had forgiven Dr. Lloyd.

“Forgiveness is key for every Christian. God has forgiven me, why can’t I forgive. We have also met with Hon. Michael Chinda and others. We got their approval for reconciliation.”

Methodist Church Seeks Ugwuanyi’s Intervention Over Property Demolition

The Methodist Church, Diocese of Enugu has urged Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to come to its immediate aid following the demolition of one of its churches. The 61-year-old Ebenezer Methodist Church, located at Emene, in Enugu state was one of the many structures demolished as part of the expansion work at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

Recall that federal government had recently ordered demolition of some structures which it said posed great risk to the full operation of the international airport. Among them are the Ebenezer Methodist Church, the Orie Emene Market, as well as several residential buildings and stalls.

Reacting to the development when a team of clergy men visited the scene of the demolition, the Synod Secretary of the Methodist Diocese of Enugu, Very Rev. Joel Okorie, said the church was in trauma over the development. He said though they were not against the development process at the airport, the government should come to their aid as the church had existed long before the airport.

While revealing that the church came into being at the land in question in 1961, he said the property lost to the demolition was well over N600m. Okorie said, “We have a series of buildings within this place, our main church, our Sunday School, the parsonage, lock-up shops, but because of the Enugu Airport rehabilitation, the buildings were brought down.”

He regretted that the demolishing agency went beyond the already marked buildings and brought other structures down. “The agency acted even against the intervention of the governor. The Governor I know for sure never wanted this to happen, he wanted us to be allowed time to evacuate our properties here but the agency wouldn’t let that be.

“We are completely set-aback, and are now begging the Governor to help us in this trying time. Over 1000 congregants have now been destabilized. We urge the government to do the needful because the Methodist Church is also a key player in this State and beyond.

“I know that the government we have is a listening government, so, we ask him to come to our aid and reingener that confidence we have in him,” he pleaded.

Imo APC: Okorocha’s Allies, Others Team Up With Uzodinma’s Camp

Governor Hope Uzodimma has given indication that the state congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will soon take place in an environment where all party members will be carried along.

The governor spoke on Monday when he received in audience former secretary to the Imo State Government, George Eche, former APC Chairman in Imo state, Chief Hilary Eke, former commissioners and other political appointees in the administration of former Governor Rochas Okorocha who came to pledge their loyalty and support to his government.

The former commissioners and appointees said they were resolved to give Governor Uzodimma all the support he needed to succeed, including the effort he was making to ensure that the APC was made a strong and united party in Imo state and, by extension, the South East.

Uzodimma said the APC state congress will take place in an atmosphere devoid of rancour and bickering, even as he reiterated his resolve to build the party as a strong and united one.

The governor emphasised that APC members in the state should put the past behind them and focus on politics that would take care of today, yesterday and tomorrow. He reminded the party members that they were one and would only make progress in a united APC where the party was seen as supreme.

He said he was open to building a party that would serve the people and invited all members to come home and help him use his God-given powers to create happiness in Imo. “With effective, united, strong and viral APC in Imo state, there is the tendency for APC to spread and capture power in the South East by being in power, not only in Imo, but in the other four states of the zone,” Governor Uzodimma said.

The governor regretted that the local government election was yet to be held because of the coronavirus pandemic.

On the Okigwe senatorial bye election, he said he had no candidate of his own and that if he could vote, he would only vote for one of the 13 candidates like every other legible member of the APC in the state. He, therefore, enjoined all and sundry to forget about the old order and key into the new order that recognises the tenets of democracy.

Earlier, the leader of the team and former commissioner for petroleum in Imo state, Chief Jones Uzoka, said they came to pledge their unalloyed support for Governor Uzodimma’s administration and to support him to rebuild the party and avoid factionalisation. He acknowledged the positive performance of the governor and thanked him for working hard to bring them out from the political oblivion of the immediate past administration.

He also thanked the governor for his magnanimity to their group which included the return of their vehicles seized by the PDP short-lived administration in Imo state and pleaded for his help in returning their seized landed property.

Making clarification on the visit, former deputy governor of Imo state, Prince Eze Madumere, appealed to APC members in the state to bury the hatchet and cue into the new order, insisting that the government in power in Imo state was for all of them.

In a speech to welcome the guests, the chairman of APC in Imo state, Chief Marcellus Nlemigbo, told them that they were APC members and that they had renewed their membership by coming to the Government House. He pleaded with them to support the government of Governor Uzodimma.
