FCT PDP Boss Charges Nigerian Politicians To Lead By Example

Nigerian politicians have been advised to put God first, apart from doing everything humanly possible to promote and improve the welfare of the people rather than chasing after wealth through desperate political ambitions, which do not take the masses into consideration.

Newly elected chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] in the Federal Capital Territory [FCT] Mr. Sunday Zakka Dogo, gave the advice in Abuja. He remarked that major sections of the nation’s political class pursue inordinate aspirations with fake promises deliberately designed to give advantage to the politicians at the expense of the electorate.

The chairman decried what he called “promise and fail syndrome, which has become the tactics of some politicians and the pursuit of power with other spiritual means.”

He wondered why anyone should pledge to do things, when there are obvious signs that the person does not have the capacity to fulfill such promises.

Sunday Zakka Dogo, who spoke to newsmen after a thanksgiving church service said: “I advise people, especially politicians, who are serving other gods and are not doing what was expected of them or what they promised before their election into office, to repent and return to the true God, who is the Almighty.

“It is said that one with God has the majority; but they [politicians] should understand that it is the one living God that was referred to in the statement and not other gods made by men. He [God] can make everything possible.

“There are many people, who pray without getting results, not because of the way they pray; but when their intentions are not pure, their prayers may not be answered.”

Sunday Zakka Dogo appealed to PDP members, who also contested the FCT chairmanship position but failed, to join hands with him in rebuilding the structure of the party, bearing in mind that the PDP slogan states that members are one family. He reminded PDP members in the FCT that area council electioneering campaigns would soon commence and declared that the party requires unity, hard work, cooperation and understanding among its members to succeed in ousting the ruling All Progressives Party [APC].

COVID-19: ECOWAS Donate 4000 Tons Of Food Items To Nigeria

The Economic Community of West African States [ECOWAS] Commission, last weekend, donated about 4,000 tons of food items to the federal government for distribution to vulnerable households in Nigeria, to mitigate the suffering caused by the COVID-19.

ECOWAS Commissioner of Agriculture, Water Resources and Environment, Sangare Sekou, disclosed this at the presentation of the items to the federal government on Saturday in Kano. Sekou said that the gesture was to demonstrate the region’s solidarity with the government and the people of Nigeria.

According to Sangare Sekou: “Regional solidarity will be demonstrated through food donations of a total quantity of 3,999 tons of cereals; comprising of millet and sorghum. The first donation consisted of 1,196 tons of cereals financed by the ECOWAS Commission’s Humanitarian Emergency Fund for Disaster and Emergency Relief to member states affected by a humanitarian crisis.

“While the second donation of 2,803 tons was funded by the resources of the Regional Food Security Storage Support Project, which the European Union is financing for a total amount of €56 million.

“The grains will be taken from the stocks in the ECOWAS Regional Food Security Reserve, partly warehoused with the Federal Strategic Reserve Department (FSRD) and distributed free of charge to the households mostly affected by the humanitarian situation in the country.”

Sangare Sekou said the donations would complement the multidimensional support ECOWAS was providing Nigeria since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country. He noted that COVID-19 pandemic disrupted production, warehousing, marketing, processing, and distribution systems of agriculture and food productions, especially in the northeastern part of the country.

“The harmonized framework for identifying risk areas and vulnerability estimates that over 7,087,102 people are currently in difficult food situations in Nigeria, including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and children affected by malnutrition.

“The ECOWAS Commission has, therefore, decided to provide the support of the region through its Humanitarian Emergency Fund and the financial support of the European Union within the framework of the Regional Food Security Storage Support Project,” Sangare Sekou said.

He hoped that food donations would assist vulnerable households to cope with the multiple crises and safeguard livelihoods.

ECOWAS humanitarian policy, he stated, aims to prevent, mitigate, and provide durable solutions to the complex emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters in the region.

“It was also designed to complement the ECOWAS Disaster Risk Reduction Policy, focusing on disaster risk mitigation through viable interventions targeted at reducing risks as an obstacle to development.”

The Regional Food Security Reserve was established on February 28, 2013, in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, by the ECOWAS Heads of State and Governments and aims to complement the efforts of member states by providing diversified rapid food and nutritional assistance.

Group Denies Drumming Support For Parties, Candidates For Edo Guber

The Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOSCO), says it has not endorsed any of the candidates or political parties in the race for the Edo state governorship election.

A press statement signed by the Public Relation Officer of Edo Civil Society Organisations, Leftist Osazee Edigin, and made available to journalists in Benin City, said the right coalition group is forbidden from endorsing any political party or it’s candidate.

The civil rights group, however, stated that as stakeholders in the society, it would engage political parties, their candidates, the electoral umpire and the public with the aim of achieving a free, fair and credible election, and to reposition the society towards political evolution.

The statement reads in part: “Edo state is currently charged with political activities, with the two major political parties, the PDP and APC meeting different groups and sourcing for endorsements along the way, to boost their chances at the polls. The civil society constituency is a major component of the system that must not fail in its objective in repositioning the society towards achieving democratic evolution.

“We need to be emphatic on the issue of political endorsement in elections with its attendant consequences as a civil rights group. As a matter of concrete policy, EDOCSO is forbidden to endorse any political party or their candidates for any election; however, we are expected to help guide the various political actors and citizens on laid down procedures in achieving a free, fair and credible election. Our members are allowed to belong to any political party of their choice; but cannot endorse any candidate or political party. Executive council members are barred from belonging to any political party.

“The civil society is to engage the various stakeholders that constitute the polity and not to take a one-sided political endorsement that tends to defeat the trust and confidence of the masses that it represents. We will do political education, have discussions with political parties and candidates, and engage law enforcement agents and the umpire, which are geared towards a successful election, as the responsibility demands.

“EDOCSO, which is ably led by Leftist Omobude Agho, will not compromise the standard built over the years, and being replicated at our various study centres, which are community-based formations across the state in endorsing a political party or candidate. It will be too dangerous and risky for EDOCSO to endorse a political party in the present day Nigeria, when it is obvious that none has clear cut ideology.

“Our major preoccupation currently is the continuous expansion of our study centres in every community in Edo state, where locals will be empowered with requisite information to engage the system in order to endear a better society. We are movement poise to raising altruistic leaders that will distort the existing status quo that is populated by greedy, avaricious and gluttonous leaders, whose only motivation is the splitting of our commonwealth among themselves. Our presence is already in over 10 local government areas of the state and several communities, where our members are making discernable positive imparts.”
