Racism is an issue that is plaguing many dark-skinned folks living outside Africa and in other parts of the world. Time has shown that even the rich and famous are not exempted from these attacks and it has also led to numerous deaths, some of which gained attention in recent times.

Just recently, top Nigerian singer, Davido, shared some of his experience with racism as a teenager who grew up in America.

The Risky crooner said that he went to school in Alabama which was a predominantly white state. He added that being an African in a university that had only 13% black people was not easy.

Another Nigerian man succeeds, makes int'l list of successful people under age 30 in art and style (photos) Nigerian music star, Davido. Photo: @davidoofficial / IG. Source: Instagram In his words: “It's crazy, because I'm from both America and Africa, so I know how both sides think.

I went to school in Alabama. I went to college at 15. I was very young. And Alabama was a predominantly white state. So being an African kid in a university where it's 13% Black people, it's amazing.

It's not easy. I had to learn a lot of the things when I was like, "Yo, why you look at me like that?" And not even just being black, being African. They used to ask me questions like, "Yo, how'd you get to America?" I'm like, "What you mean? I came on a plane." "Oh, y'all got airports?" Now every American wants to go to Africa.

Everybody wants to know where they're from. So it's good to see the transition from not being appreciated, to being appreciated right now.” Speaking further, Davido said that he just had a son who is an American citizen and that he plans on speaking to him about the discrimination blacks’ face and also to defend himself.

Paris Police Attacked, 158 Arrested After PSG Lost To Bayern

Football fans numbering 158 were arrested on Sunday after Paris police were attacked and shops in the French capital were vandalised, the interior minister and police in France said on Monday.

The attacks as well as arrests were made after the 0-1 loss by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final match on Sunday.

“The savagery of certain delinquents from last night: 16 members of the police forces injured, 12 shops attacked, around 15 cars vandalised,” Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote on Twitter.

The Paris police department said 158 people had been arrested for suspected theft or vandalism.

It added that much of the trouble occured around the Champs Elysees avenue where many fans had gathered for the game.

Bayern Munich beat PSG in the final match in Lisbon.

PSG fans had already been involved in clashes in Paris with the police earlier on Sunday.

Some supporters threw projectiles at police vehicles outside PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium and had to be dispersed with tear gas.

The Paris police added that as a result of the trouble, they would be closing down bars in the area around the Parc des Princes stadium.

This was to be from Monday afternoon through to Tuesday morning.(Reuters/NAN)

Edo Assembly Invasion: Court Remands Suspects In Police Custody

A Benin High Court on Monday ordered that the seven suspects, who allegedly invaded the Edo House of Assembly complex on Aug. 6 be remanded in police custody.

The suspects are: Wilfred Ogbewe, 52; Igbinobono Collins, 26; Salami Osayomore, 25; Odion Osayande, 23; Morgan Uwanboe, 47; Ifeoluwa Oladele, 36; and Agbonrere Festus, 25 .

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) recalls that on Aug. 6, the suspects allegedly invaded the state house of assembly premises in Benin, in a manner that caused breach of peace.

Justice Efe Ikponmwonba, ordered that the suspects be remanded in the police custody till Sept. 3 when plea (arraignment) would be taken, after the originating motion scheduled for Tuesday.

Earlier, Counsel to the suspects, Mr Mattias Obayuwana, told the court that there was an enrolment order on the suspects, directed by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

Obayuwana said that the suspects were expected to have appeared in court on Tuesday for hearing and not on Monday.

He said he was shocked that the prosecuting counsel, Mr Akomen Adaghe, brought the suspects to court.

Adaghe, however, said he was not aware of such an order, but urged the court to remand the suspects. (NAN)

Unizik Begins Research On Igboman’s Entrepreneurial Model

The Business School of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka on Monday launched a research on the entrepreneurial model of the Igboman.

The research is sponsored by a non-profit organisation, Pro-Value Humanity Foundation, founded by Dr Obiora Okonkwo, a governorship aspirant in the 2021 poll in Anambra.
Okonkwo spoke at the formal opening of the research, entitled, “Invigorating Igbo entrepreneurial behaviour through enhanced apprenticeship scheme: A study of Onitsha market”.

He said that the study would rediscover the missing links on Igbo entrepreneurial spirit.
He said, “Onitsha main market occupies a special place in the development history of the Igbo people and Nigeria.

Okonkwo, who doubles as the Chairman, the Dome Entertainment Center, Abuja, said the research would among other things, “Interrogate Igbo entrepreneurship culture and the apprenticeship system”.
He said that Nigeria must find a connect between intellectual and financial capital to tackle development issues.

Okonkwo traced the commercial history of Onitsha ancient town, linking it to how it produced prosperous businessmen but regretted that “Onitsha today is a shadow of itself”.
Also, the Director of UNIZIK Business School, Prof. Austin Nonyelu, expressed gratitude to Okonkwo, saying that building sustainable businesses that would last beyond their founders should be a concern to all.

Nonyelu said: “This research is the beginning of the interface between the academic institution, the Business School in this instance, and the industry as represented by the consortium of traders and enterprises.

“This emerging relationship is quite timely, given the poor state of the Nigerian economy characterised by multifarious problems.

“These include but not limited to decreasing productivity, collapsing companies and businesses, poor liquidity ratio, graduate unemployment and widening poverty,” he said.
The Deputy Vice-Chancilor of the university, Prof. Fredrick Odibo, who represented the Vice-Chancilor, Prof. Charles Esimone, said the institution would support the research and make the business school one of the best in the world. (NAN)

Edo Assembly Seeks Lawmakers’ Arrest For Forgery, Impersonation

The Edo House of Assembly on Monday called for the arrest and prosecution of some of the former members-elect who constituted themselves into another assembly for forgery, impersonation and treason.

The call for the arrest and prosecution was sequel to a motion moved under matters of urgent public importance by the leader of the House, Mr Henry Okhuarobo, representing Ikpoba-Okha Constituency.

The Assemblymen urged Gov. Godwin Obaseki, the Commissioner of Police in Edo, the Department of State Security Services (DSS), and other relevant security agencies to urgently arrest and prosecute the absentee members-elect.
The motion for the arrest was seconded by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Roland Asoro, member representing Orhionmwon South.

Moving the motion, Okhuarobo said the House was inundated with the constitution of another assembly by members-elect whose seats were declared vacant.
Okhuarobo noted that the only Assembly recognised by law was the one led by the speaker Francis Okiye.
“These members-elect sitting in a private residence and forging Mr speaker’s letterhead amount to forgery, impersonation and treason.
“So, I am calling on the governor, the commissioner of police and the DSS to urgently arrest and prosecute these members-elect because we cannot have two assemblies in one government,” he said.

Mr Macus Onobun, the chief whip of the House and member representing Esan West, said “Edo is not a banana republic where people can arrogate powers to themselves without recourse to constituted authority.
“This Assembly was duly constituted on June 17, 2019 and their seats have been declared vacant following their refusal to present themselves for inauguration,” he said.

According to him, they need to be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
“We cannot have a government inside a government,’’ he said.
Other lawmakers who spoke in favour of the motion called on President Muhammadu Buhari to act in accordance with the law.

The Speaker, Mr Francis Okiye, in his submission said the 1999 constitution as amended does not recognise a government inside a government.
“We can order their arrest but we will get there,” the speaker said.
Also at plenary, the House passed a bill to enact the Edo State public procurement law 2020 and a bill for a law for operation of lotteries, loto and online sports betting in Edo state. (NAN)

Centre Begins Mass Treatment Of Fistula Patients In Abakaliki

The National Obstetric Fistula Centre (NOFIC), Abakaliki, Ebonyi, on Monday began a free fistula repair campaign for patients with the condition in the country.

The Medical Director of the centre, Prof. Johnson Obuna who flagged off the campaign titled: “Pool-effort fistula repair campaign,” said it aimed at treating and rehabilitating 50 to 100 obsteric fistula patients for free.

He said that patients expected for the repair, cut across 17 southern states of the country and Benue.

He said that the campaign was co-sponsored by the office of Mrs Rachael Umahi, the Wife of the state Governor, Gender Unit, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Fistula Foundation and NOFIC, Abakaliki.

“This pool-effort campaign will last throughout this week and patients are already in the wards and more are coming.

“The patients are from 17 southern states and Benue State. Their admission, surgeries and feeding are free,” he said.

According to him, a team from the federal ministry of women affairs was in the state to take details of the patients and how to rehabilitate and empower them.

Obuna said major causes of obsteric fistula included default obsteric services, poverty, ignorance about how to access standard obsteric services, patronising quacks and delivery at home, among others.

He said: “Currently, we are observing worrisome trends where poorly done caesarean section is increasing and becoming commonest cause of the health condition in our southern region.

“We have also observed that some successful repaired and rehabilitated patients, who got pregnant again, still present with recurrent fistula because they resorted to quacks for delivery of their babies.”

He said because of the challenges, the centre began maternity services, offered free antenatal and delivery services including caesarean sections, to successful repaired pregnant patients, who wished to have delivery at the centre.

Obuna further encouraged the general public to take advantage of the ongoing campaign and services available at the centre, to make their lives better.

The medical director commended President Muhammadu Buhari for giving them the opportunity to serve and the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire and other partners for their continous supports.

Mrs Umahi expressed satisfaction with the collaboration among the partners in the managgement of the patients.

The governor’s wife, represented by Mrs Patience Offorokorie, her Special Assistant (SA) on Welfare Matters, noted that some cultural believes were also responsible for the health challenge.

She appealed to the patients to adhere to instructions given by experts and urged them to take advantage of the ongoing skills acquisition trainings for self-reliance.

She called on traditional rulers, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other stakeholders, to assist in identifying women with fistula challenge, for treatment at the centre. (NAN)

Edo Guber: Obaseki Vows To Fulfill All Campaign Promises

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Edo state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has assured voters in the state that his administration will not fail in fulfilling all his electioneering campaign promises aimed at improving the living standards of the people.

Obaseki, who made the pledge while addressing a crowd of PDP supporters in wards 1 and 4 in Ibhore, Esan Central local government area of the state, noted that his government had, in the last three years and eight months, pursued reforms and policies to better the lives of the people, and will continue with the developmental strides recorded in the first term, when reelected.

The governor, who inspected ongoing Ibhore gully erosion work in the area, said the first phase of the project is completed, while work the second phase will commence soon.

He said: “This place, before now, was not motorable. We had to construct an underground drainage to control the erosion. During my first electioneering campaign, I promised that I would construct the drainage and now, the first phase is over. I said I would construct roads eaten up by erosion and I have done that.

“Some politicians will come here and make promises without keeping them. Don’t vote for such politicians. We have also modernised our educational system, which makes it one of the best in Nigeria now.

“I gave you modern schools that have doors and windows that cannot be vandalised. I know you don’t have water, which is as a result of lack of electricity, but I will ensure that Benin Electricity Distribution Company provides you with light.”

On his part, chairman of Edo PDP campaign council, Chief Dan Orbih, noted: “Obaseki is one governor that is working. He has stopped pensioners from going to Benin City to start protesting for their pension arrears. The teachers are getting their regular salaries. He has not stopped training our teachers to enable them have modern knowledge to teach our students.

“Obaseki is working and we are ready to vote for him. With the level of his infrastructural development across the 18 local government areas of the state, I want to advise the candidate of the All Progressives Congress to go and look for a church to start preaching.”

He added: “This is the time politicians must show character; election or no election. We should start to represent our core values. If you are a pastor, remain a pastor, and if you are a Christian, remain a Christian, and if you are a politician, remain a politician.

“I want to thank the good people of Edo for showing commitment to reelect Governor Obaseki. He has used our money to develop our state. Times when contracts are awarded to close friends are over.”
