Ebuehi Replaces Ndidi In Nigeria’s Friendlies Squad
FC Twente defender Tyronne Ebuehi will replace Wilfred Ndidi in Nigeria’s squad for October’s friendly games against Algeria and Tunisia.
Ndidi was among the initial 25-man squad with Ebuehi grouped with players on standby.
However, injury for the Leicester City midfielder in the Foxes’ 4-2 triumph over Burnley ruled him out of the encounter meant to prepare the Super Eagles for their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone in November.
“Tyronne will replace Ndidi in our team from the standby,” Rohr told ESPN.
While disclosing the decision to pick the 24-year-old, the German tactician said his team would miss the midfield trojan, who is expected to be out of action between six to 12 weeks, having undergone surgery on his abductor injury.
“We will miss him so much,” he continued.
“I have spoken to him, of course. He must be patient now and take his time to get well.”
Ebuehi last featured for the three-time African champions against Iceland during the 2018 Fifa World Cup Russia – replacing Brian Idowu at the beginning of the second-half.
Since then, he had ruptured his cruciate knee ligaments which prevented him from playing a competitive game for Rohr’s team.
The 24-year-old has now recovered from the injury problem and subsequently returned to the Netherlands, where he was born, joining Twente this summer on a season-long loan from Benfica.
“It’s been a long period out and a hard time for me. Of course, questions like ‘could this be the end?’ can pop up from time to time,” he told BBC Sport.
“You sometimes hear that with this type of major injuries players never return to the same level they were before the injury.
“It was difficult in the beginning I can’t lie about that. To be away from the only country you have ever known, where you’re born and away from your family and friends. You feel alone knowing it was just no longer possible for them to just pass by.
“It’s changed me a lot. Not only as a player but as a person. Away in another country being alone. Sometimes it’s like unseen tears of frustration because of the mental pain.
“Like I always tell my family and friends now, that I’m thankful to God for this type of hard lessons sometimes in life.
“It really made me aware of a lot of things, like how to take care of my body now. How things can happen in football, how to deal with them. I’m thankful for the lessons that God gave me.this-video-will-start-in0:450:1511Article continues below
“Going forward in my career, I know how to take care of myself and what’s good for me, how to handle any future injuries, hopefully, it will not happen.
“I missed the entire 2018/19 season because of this difficult injury, but I’m happy that I’m fit now and I’m thankful that I am able to play the game that I love again.”
Nigeria take on Algeria on October 9 in Austria before facing Tunisia at the same venue four days later.

Barkley Joins Aston Villa On Season-Long Loan
The England international has found himself on the fringes of Frank Lampard’s squad and so has moved to Villa Park for the 2020-21 campaign
Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley has joined fellow Premier League side Aston Villa on a season-long loan for the 2020-21 campaign.
The England international, capped 33 times for his country at senior level, moved to Stamford Bridge from Everton in January 2018 but has since found himself on the fringes of the first-team squad.
Villa manager Dean Smith told the club’s official website: “Capturing a player of Ross’s quality is a real coup for our club and I am certain he will thrive here and improve our team.”
Barkley broke onto the Premier League scene as a teenager at Everton, scoring 27 goals from midfield in 179 appearances for the Toffees.
His dynamic style of play marked him out as one of England’s most promising young players, however, injury and loss of form have meant he has impressed only sporadically since moving to Stamford Bridge.
Barkley has fallen down the pecking order for the Blues, with Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic now ahead of him in Frank Lampard’s plans, and he has been allowed to depart on loan.
The 26-year-old has scored 11 goals in 86 appearances for Chelsea, the most recent coming in the 6-0 victory over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup last week. He helped the Blues to Europa League victory in 2019, scoring in the semi-final penalty shoot-out win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Barkley will not be available for Villa in their Carabao Cup clash with Stoke City on Thursday as he is cup-tied, but he could make his debut at the weekend in the Premier League meeting with champions Liverpool.
He is the latest player to depart Chelsea on loan and is the fourth to go to a Premier League rival, after Ethan Ampadu to Sheffield United, Michy Batshuayi to Crystal Palace and Conor Gallagher to West Brom.
A total of 21 players have left Chelsea on a temporary basis this summer, and several more are expected to depart before the transfer window closes on October 5.Article continues below
They have been replaced at Stamford Bridge by several big-money signings, including Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy, while Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr have come in on free transfers.
Villa have been equally busy as they look to avoid another relegation scrap having only stayed in the Premier League on the final day of the 2019-20 season.
Barkley joins former Chelsea winger Bernard Traore at Villa Park, as well as ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, and acquisitions from the Championship in Matty Cash and Ollie Watkins.

First Man Cured Of HIV Dies Of Cancer
The first person to be cured of HIV, Timothy Ray Brown, has died of cancer, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
This was contained in a statement issued by Bijan Farnoudi, Communication and Public Affairs Director, International AIDS Society (IAS) and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) through email, on Wednesday in Ibadan.
NAN reports that Brown, known, as the “Berlin Patient”, died on Tuesday after battling with a recurrence of leukaemia for several months.
IAS, in the statement, said that Brown made medical history when he became the first person to be cured of HIV in 2008, after undergoing a complex stem cell transplant for lymphoma.
“For the past six months, Timothy had been living with a recurrence of the leukaemia that had entered his spine and brain. He had remained HIV-free.
“On behalf of all its members and the Governing Council, the IAS sends its condolences to Timothy’s partner, Tim and his family and friends.
“We owe Timothy and his doctor, Gero Hütter, a great deal of gratitude for opening the door for scientists to explore the concept that a cure for HIV is possible,” Adeeba Kamarulzaman, IAS President and Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Malaya, said.
According to the statement, Brown, living with HIV and with acute myeloid leukaemia, received a bone marrow transplant in Berlin, Germany, in 2007.
“The donor was naturally resistant to HIV infection because of a mutation in the CCR5 gene, a critical protein required by HIV to enter and infect cells.
“Timothy stopped antiretroviral therapy (ART) very soon after the transplant and he remained free of any detectable virus.
“In other words, he was cured. His experience suggested that HIV might one day be curable. This fuelled a range of efforts by researchers and institutions, focusing on HIV cure research”, it stated.
Ten years after Brown was cured, a second HIV sufferer, known as “the London Patient”, remained in remission 19 months after undergoing a similar procedure and he is considered to be the second man to be cured of HIV.
“Although the cases of Timothy and Adam are not a viable large-scale strategy for a cure, they do represent a critical moment in the search for an HIV cure.
“Timothy was a champion and advocate for keeping an HIV cure on the political and scientific agenda.
“It is the hope of the scientific community that one day, we can honour his legacy with a safe, cost-effective and widely- accessible strategy to achieve HIV remission and cure, using gene-editing or techniques that boost immune control,” the statement quoted IAS President-elect, Prof. Sharon Lewin, as saying.
In August, Loreen Willenberg, a woman, who had been living with HIV since 1992, reportedly had no traces of intact HIV despite not using ART.
“She may be the first person cured of HIV without undergoing a risky bone marrow transplant.
“Researchers believe that she may be an ‘extreme elite controller’, where only fragments of HIV remain and these fragments are unable to replicate,” it stated. (NAN)

NDE Trains 400 Unemployed In Bayelsa
The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) on Wednesday said that 400 unemployed residents in Bayelsa had been chosen to take part in entrepreneurial training under its Basic National Open Apprenticeship Scheme (BNOAS).
Dr Nasiru Argungu, Director-General of NDE, told the beneficiaries during an orientation ceremony in Yenagoa that the programme was part of the Federal Government’s plan to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.
Argungu, who was represented by State Cordinator for NDE in Bayelsa, Mr Aham Osuchukwu, said that the 400 beneficiaries would undergo training on 11 skills.
He listed the areas as Computer Appreciation, Hair Dressing, Aluminium Fabrication, Catering, Interior Decoration, Fashion Design, Welding and Fabrication, Video Coverage and Photography, Makeover, Dish Installation and Electrical Installation.
The director advised the beneficiaries, who were shortlisted out of numerous job seekers, to utilise the opportunity to acquire the relevant skills to enable them to be self reliant and create jobs for others.
“You will recall the pledge by President Muhammadu Buhari to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years. This programme is a component of it. By going through this training, you can take your destiny in your hands and harness abundant opportunities in the informal sector.
“The NDE is tackling unemployment by creating opportunities for the unemployed to acquire skills and we enjoin the unemployed to visit the NDE job centres and select from the array of available schemes.
“It is no longer fashionable to say I don’t have a job. The fashionable saying now is, if you don’t have a job, create a legal one. We cater for every calibre of persons in the society from the vulnerable to the retiree.
“I admonish you to channel your youthful energy towards skills acquisition and become proficient in your chosen field, rather than roaming endlessly for elusive jobs. An idle mind and hand is the devil’s instrument for creation of chaos in the society,” he said.
Argungu called on other tiers of government, philanthropists and corporate organisations to partner the NDE in the task of reducing unemployment and thanked the Bayelsa government for providing an enabling environment for NDE scheme to thrive in the state.
James Ibid, one of the beneficiaries who spoke on behalf of others, applauded the government for the scheme and pledged to make good use of the opportunity.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Jordan Awudu, who represented the Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Mr Daniel Igali, advised the beneficiaries to be obedient to their trainers and humble, to learn during the programme. (NAN)

NERC Orders Suspension Of Electricity Tariff Hike For 14 Days
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday night issued an order suspending the September 1, 2020 hike in electricity tariffs for 14 days.
Labour unions and the Federal Government had reached a truce on Sunday night to reverse the hike in electricity tariffs for 14 days, a development that prompted the halt of a nationwide strike by labour.
Power distributors had on Monday and earlier on Tuesday told The PUNCH that no order concerning the matter had been received from the regulator.
Sources at the commission had confirmed earlier in the day that an order might come from the regulator on Tuesday night.
The regulator issued Order No. NERC/209/2020 around 10.30 pm on Tuesday, with the title, “NERC Order on suspension of the Multi Year Tariff Order 2020 for the electricity distribution licensees.”
The NERC Chairman, James Momoh, and the Commissioner, Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye, signed the order.
The commission said, “This order shall take effect from 28th September 2020 and shall cease to have effect on the 11th October 2020.”
The commission had approved a new tariff for power distributors that took effect from September 1, 2020 but this was resisted by labour unions and most power users.
However, in its latest order, the NERC said the September 1, 2020 increase in tariff had to be suspended for 14 days based on the agreement between Federal Government and labour unions.
It directed the 11 power distribution companies across the country to abide by the order.
