Labour Suspends Strike, Signs Agreement

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has suspended its planned nationwide strike that would have started today, Monday, September 28, in protest against the hike in pump price of fuel and electricity tariff.

Earlier, there were indications that the Federal Government and NLC might reach an agreement to avert the looming nationwide strike.

The Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus KeyamSAN) tweeted that there was hope the industrial crisis might be avoided.

He stated on his verified Twitter handle(@fkeyamo): “Still negotiating with labour at exactly 12.34am. Some progress have been made. Concrete proposals on the table from both sides.

“Details being worked on by the temporary Secretariat. Gradually moving towards a point of convergence. Let’s hope….”

Furthermore, a source told Vanguard that it is possible the tariff will be suspended for two weeks, but said nothing specific about fuel pump price.

The source also said a joint government/Labour committee will be set up to review the issues within those two weeks.

Vanguard also learned that a communique is being hammered out, an indication that some sort of agreement had been arrived at.

Recall that Vanguard reported that the issue of pump price hike had links with IMF, the World Bank and other international finance bodies Nigeria is indebted to.

Onyeama Calls For Peace In Enugu APC

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has called for a peaceful resolution of the infighting in the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Onyeama made the call while addressing party faithful during a meeting on Sunday in Enugu.

He said that he was worried that the infighting had divided the party into factions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some chieftains of the party had earlier called for the dissolution of the state executive council of the party.

The minister said that it was worrisome that, for the past five years, chieftains of the party in the state have been working at cross purposes and pitted against one another.

He said that such circumstance had affected the fortunes of the APC in the state.

Onyeama said that he advised a factional chairman of the party, Mr Ben Nwoye, to call the meeting in order to rub minds with the party faithful on how to move the party forward.

The minister, however, said that he was startled to learn that Nwoye was allegedly holding a parallel meeting.

“I earlier made it clear to everyone that there is a red line I should not cross but I have to cross it now, not for personal interest, but for the progress of the party.

“The time has come for us to move forward,’’ he said.

Onyeama said that it was better for party members to put whatever differences they had behind and harmonise APC.

“The National Working Committee of the party has been dissolved.

“It is better for us to find solutions to our problem instead of the NEC to impose a solution on us.’’

Earlier, a former governorship aspirant of the party, Chief Ifeanyi Nwoga, said that the crisis in the party had affected good governance in the state.

Nwoga said that it was time the minister was respected as the leader of the party in the state in order for peace to return.

Also, the Head, Federal Character Commission, South-East zone, Mrs Ginika Tor said that it was sad that the party was still torn by factions.

Tor said that it was disrespectful to the minister that a faction of the party was allegedly holding a separate meeting at the same time.

One of the party leaders in the state, Mr Barth Ugwuoke, blamed the crisis on what he described as ‘lack of internal democracy’.

“Instead of having this problem, Ben Nwoye and Okey Ogbodo, who are the two people laying claim to the chairmanship of the party should go,’’ Ugwuoke said.

However, the Director-General, Voice of Nigeria, Mr Osita Okechukwu, said that the leadership of the party in the state was not in doubt.

Okechukwu, who spoke at another meeting held by a faction of the party in the state, said that Nwoye remained the chairman of the party in the state.

Meanwhile, Nwoye has called on members to close ranks in a bid to improve the fortunes of the party.

Nwoye, who addressed members of the party during a parallel meeting, said that it was time for peace to reign in the party. (NAN)

Bayelsa CCT Regrets Delayed Disbursement Of FG’s Social Investment Fund

The Bayelsa State Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Unit implementing the Social Investment Programme of the Federal Government has reassured beneficiaries that plans have been concluded to commence disbursement after initial setbacks.

A statement by the Unit Head of the Bayelsa State Cash Transfer Unit, Mrs Tonbara Kenigbolo made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday said that the funds released by the Federal Government for the scheme were safe.

Kenigbolo who dismissed media reports that the contractor absconded with the funds, attributed the delay for payment to beneficiaries to logistics challenges faced by the initial contractor which led to the termination of the contract.

She said that it was a mistake to say that Data Mining Firm absconded with funds meant for the most vulnerable and poor in Bayelsa and three other states as claimed, adding that the funds were being warehoused during the delay.

She explained that under the governance structure put in place by the Social Investment Programme, it was not possible to divert the funds due to inbuilt safety measures.

The unit head added that the contractor failed to deliver on its mandate due to setback in logistics but the funds were intact.

According to the her, as part of efforts to address the delay in payment, the Bayelsa office of the CCT wrote a protest letter to the National Social Investment Programme office which led to the termination of the contract of Data Mining.

“Subsequently, the contract was then re-awarded to a new firm, Softcom’’.

She, however, assured that the new contractor has received funds for the outstanding payments, adding that it would commence on Sept. 28.

She said that the shortlisted households would be receiving at least N50,000 as arrears cutting across 96 communities in Ekeremor, Southern Ijaw and Nembe LGAs. (NAN)

Nigeria At 60: We Have Cracks That May Break Us - Osinbajo

The Vice Pesident, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said that Nigeria could be heading for a break up if urgent actions are not taken, collectively, to address the identified cracks that could quicken such break-up.

Osinbajo said on Sunday in Abuja at the 60th Independence Anniversary interdenominational church service held at National Ecumenical Centre, themed “Come, let us rebuild…” that, though, the task of mending the cracks could face severe opposition, it can only be achieved by consistent focus and prayers by Nigerians who desire more peaceful and prosperous nation.

The Vice President, who was represented by the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, made reference to the story of Nehemiah in the Bible, and his role in rebuilding the broken-down walls of Jerusalem.

The Vice President urged Nigerians to study the story of Nehemiah and replicate same in Nigeria for a better country.

“The story should be a challenge to every Christian in Nigeria who is desirous of following the part of Christian way of life. It is only that kind of Nehemiah’s love that will make us as Nigerians to rebuild the cracks we have in our walls (Nigeria) today.

“For us in Nigeria, Nehemiah should be taken as a metaphor for that Nigerians who either reside in Nigeria or outside, to cry to God to use the abandoned opportunities in Nigeria to address our challenges of nation building.

“Fortunately for us, our walls are not yet broken but there are obvious cracks that could lead to break if not properly addressed. Nehemiah started with fervent prayers, seeking the Face of God and pleaded with his king to allow him return to Jerusalem to rebuild the broken walls. Because wall signifies peace, security, contentment and prosperity. It signifies the essence of the state of the nation.

“There’s urgent need for Nehemiah in our country, Nigeria, today. And like Nehemiah faced opposition in his efforts to rebuild the walls, any Nigerian that desire to rebuild Nigeria must also be ready to face stiffer opposition which will come in torrents. It can only be diffused by consistent focus and prayers,” Osinbajo said.

He, however, expressed optimism that the 60th independence anniversary could herald a rebirth of Nigerian as a nation, and that no group is more prepared for this task than the religious bodies.

He, therefore charged the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to provide quality leadership to its faithful and guide them in making Nigeria a great country that it has been destined to be.

On his part, the CAN President, Dr. Samson Ayokunle, stressed the need for justice which, he said, will birth peace, tolerance and love.

“A nation that is religiously plural like ours require love in practice so as to co-exist without fighting one another. What is sane in using the name of God or hide under the cloak of religion to kill a fellow human? If God wants all of us to be of one ethnicity, race or religion doesn’t he have the power to do it? Why do we want to play God and wickedly terminate the lives of others in account of religion?

“Nigeria is blessed with abundant human and material resources located in different parts of this country. This underscores the indispensability of all the regions and ethnic groups. For us all to be on the same page, have sense of belonging and be happy, the doctrine of equality, that is equal access to employment, governance and education, must be available to all.

“We need true religiosity in Nigeria to reposition Nigeria and overcome our corrupt way of living which has almost become the norm to our shame. The principle of inclusivity must be adopted. Nobody or region must be excluded from the scheme of things in Nigeria,” Ayokunle said.

Pressure Mounts On Tinubu To Back Osinbajo For 2023 Presidency

* APC Stakeholders Say Age, Religion, Experience Favours VP As Buhari's Successor

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, some powerbrokers in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are already mounting pressure on Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, national leader of the party, to bury his rumoured presidential ambition in 2023 and queue behind Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Daily Independent has gathered.

Even though Tinubu is yet to declare whether he will run in 2023 or not, a lot of his supporters believe he is very much interested in the race and his silence is borne out of his desire not to distract the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is yet to mark two years of his second term in office.

However, some of his supporters have been launching several groups, both at home and in the diaspora, to rally support for his ambition, saying it is non-negotiable.

Also, some prominent Nigerians have also been canvassing support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition, saying he is the best man to succeed President Buhari in 2023. They include Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF); elder statesman, Tanko Yakassai, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Chief Henry Ajomale and several others.

Daily Independent gathered that prominent leaders of APC have resolved to zone the position of national chairman to the North while the presidency will be zoned to the South, with many of them agreeing in principle that it will be unfair for the North to retain the position after President Buhari must have completed his eight years.

It was also learnt that many of the party leaders, especially in the Northern bloc of the country, are favourably disposed to Osinbajo taking over from Buhari based on his loyalty, commitment and deep knowledge of the programmes of the government, especially relating to the management of the economy.

According to a credible source in the party, “There is no doubt Asiwaju is interested in the 2023 presidential race. He has every right to do so and he is very qualified based on his record as a former senator, governor of Lagos for eight years and what he has been able to achieve nationally even after leaving office.

“But for many of us, we believe that if the presidency is zoned to the South and later micro-zoned to the South- West, the current vice president should be allowed to take over from the president. We have adduced so many reasons for this".

“The first is that he has been tested before and he has proven that he has the expertise to manage the affairs of a diverse nation like Nigeria. We are all witnesses to what happened in 2017 when President Buhari was ill and the vice president presided over the affairs of the nation in acting capacity.

“That was a period when Nigeria was almost at the precipice with many groups in the country, especially the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPO, seeking self-determination. He was able to manage the situation very well to the admiration of the whole country and even the president commended him upon his return to the country.

“There are also other factors we are putting into consideration. Three of these factors are age, religion and his unblemished public record. The vice president is 63 now and will be 66 by 2023. He will be a blend between the younger and older generation and many youths already see him as one of their own.

“On the issue of religion, we all know the two major religions in this country are Islam and Christianity. It will be awkward if we allow another Muslim to take over from President Buhari in 2023. I doubt if that will be fair to our brothers in the Christian faith".

“However, 2023 is still a long way from now and the president will not impose a successor. We the party leaders will also not do likewise. We can only appeal to the likes of Asiwaju and present these facts before him.

“One thing is certain, the APC presidential ticket will not be handed over to anyone on a platter of gold. At the end of the day, everyone will be asked to go to the field and test their strength. Whoever wins the party’s ticket, then good luck to him”, he said.

Speaking with our correspondent, a senior lawyer from the South-South, who is also a member of the APC, said he personally advised Tinubu to maintain his respect as national leader of the APC and support one of the boys he has mentored politically, especially Osinbajo whom he (Tinubu) nominated as running mate to Buhari in December 2014.

“We used to be very close and I have offered him advice in time past. I once advised him to remain as the party’s national leader and nominate one of his boys as president. A lot of people said Buhari has relegated him but I believe Osinbajo as a man of God and gentleman won’t do that. I said he will even have more influence in the government compared to what is happening now. But I believe he wasn’t receptive to the idea and we have not been talking again,” he said.

*NOT BY POWER OR BY MIGHT*

*BIBLE READING: PRO. 3:5; ROM. 8:3-10*

*So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts. Zechariah 4:6(NKJV).*

The Bible says, “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God” (1 Cor. 3:19a). There is no amount of human intellect or skill sufficient to accomplish the work of God effectively. It is not by power nor by might or abilities of our own, but by the Spirit of God, that we will live fruitful lives in the Lord’s service on this earth.

God's intention is for us to depend on Him for everything. Human might, power, and strength are not sufficient to accomplish the work of God on earth (Pro. 3:5). Many times, we do ministry with our flesh and natural intellect but relying on the flesh will get you no where and will definitely exhaust you at the end. What we need to do is to trust God and stop trying to manipulate the situation. Exodus 14 :13(NKJV) says, *And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.* God wants us to have faith in Him and remove every plan B, C, or D. It takes the presence, enablement, and power of the Holy Spirit in our lives to fulfill our calling on earth.

The One who stimulates all revival, as well as all effective ministry is the Spirit of God, the third Person of the Trinity. As Jesus anticipated His own return to heaven, He told His disciples that it was good for them that He goes, because from heaven He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them and in them always (John 14:16-17; 16:7).

After the Holy Spirit brings us into our initial relationship with God through His Son Jesus, He continues to lead us, empower us, and reveal God’s mind to us throughout our earthly lives. And it is only through Him, that we can “finish” our lives on earth with victory and can look back on a life well spent under the Holy Spirit’s daily control.

*PRAYER
Lord, teach me how to trust in You, remove every voice of doubt in my mind and fill me up with your Holy Spirit so that I may be led by You.
