OFFICIAL: Chelsea complete the signing of Edouard Mendy from Rennes, with the goalkeeper joining on a five-year deal at a cost of £22 million ($29m).

The Senegalese international has penned a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge and will compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero for a starting spot between the posts in the season ahead.

After signing his long-term contract with the Blues, Mendy said: ‘I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can’t wait to get started.’

On signing Mendy, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: ‘As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in. Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club.’

Alex Iwobi scored a goal and provided an assist as Everton continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 5-2 win over Fleetwood Town in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Iwobi made his first appearance of the season in the victory over West Bromwich Albion at the weekend but made the starting XI this time.

Everton did not let their guards down on Wednesday with Richarlison giving them the lead in the 22nd minute, courtesy of Bernard's assist.

The Nigeria international turned provider for the Toffees second goal, playing a lovely backheel to Richarlison after a brilliant one-two with the Brazilian.

Fleetwood were not going to give up so easily and pulled one back through second-half substitute Mark Duffy two minutes after the restart.

Everton would go on to extend their lead not too long after thanks to Iwobi, Nigerian tapping home with consummate ease after being fed by Richarlison. It marked the first time the Arsenal academy graduate scored and assisted in the same match for the first time in his club career.

Fleetwood again cut the deficit, this time from Callum Camps in the 58th minute, but Everton were equally in the mood to get more goals and added a fourth through Bernard and substitute Moise Kean wrapping things up in added time with the fifth.

The victory will see Everton face West Ham United in the Carabao Cup fourth round at Goodison Park next week.

Iwobi had a brilliant evening, recording a total of five shots, four successful dribbles from seven attempts, 78 touches on the ball and 48 completed passes from 54 with accuracy at 89%

The Super Eagles star played 25 times in all competitions last season having joined from Arsenal, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

The 24-year-old will hope to make his first Premier League start this season when Everton battle Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The Toffees kicked off their campaign first with a 1-0 Premier League win at Tottenham Hotspur followed by a 3-0 triumph over Salford City in the second round of the League Cup.

The next was an emphatic 5-2 win over newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion in the league on Saturday.

CBN’s dollar restrictions killing our businesses, Nigerians cry out by Blackgoldreport:

Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction over new foreign exchange restrictions imposed on bank customers by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Legit.ng gathered that majority of bank customers with domiciliary accounts are barred from effecting direct FX transfers to third parties and/or withdrawing their own dollars over the counter under the new restrictions.

Speaking on the new policy, the founder of the financial advisory portal, The Money Africa, Oluwatosin Olaseinde, took to Twitter to lament the new policy on Tuesday, September 22.

She tweeted: “We have just been informed that customers can no longer effect FX transfers directly to third parties. Customers can only sell such funds to the bank. Consequently, FX transfers will be disabled on internet banking.”

Recall that the CBN had on August 24, issued a circular removing buying agents/companies or any third parties from accessing its inter-bank retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) forex window through FORM M forex purchases. In the circular, the apex bank instructed that “authorised dealers are hereby directed to desist from the opening of Form M whose payment is routed through a buying company/agent or any other third parties.”

The CBN said its decision was to ensure prudent use of our foreign exchange resources and eliminate incidences of over-invoicing, transfer pricing, double handling charges, and avoidable costs that are ultimately passed to the average Nigerian consumer.

Reacting to Olaseinde’s tweet, many Nigerians berated the CBN for constraining customer’s use of their hard-earned resources.
In his reaction, a Twitter user @dapsonblue asked the federal government to focus on developing local production, rather than make life unbearable for the citizens.

He said: “They should focus on developing local production, they have little power of dollars.”

Other tweets show the displeasure of Nigerians to the CBN's policy with many placing the blame at CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele's feet. Some even went further suggesting that Mr Emefiele should resign.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, September 10, directed the CBN not to issue foreign exchange for food and importation of fertilizer.

It was reported that the president gave this directive to the CBN during the meeting of the National Food Security held in Abuja.
