Edo Governorship Election: Those Plotting To Buy Votes Won’t Succeed INEC

Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said those plotting to buy votes in tomorrow’s governorship election in Edo state won’t succeed as it has put put stringent measures in place to checkmate their activities.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC , Barr. Festus Okoye, said the commission was ready to conduct a free and fair election, devoid of any form of malpractice.

He said the Commission has redesigned polling units to protect the secrecy of the votes while plain clothes security personnel will also move around polling units to monitor the activities of those who want to circumvent the electoral process.

"We have redesigned our polling units to protect the secrecy of the vote. No person is allowed into the voting compartment with a camera. Plain clothes security personnel will move round the polling units to check vote buying and selling” he said.

*DOMINION MANDATE DAILY DEVOTIONAL*

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2020

*BEWARE OF SCOFFERS*

*BIBLE READING: 2 PETER 3; JUDE 14-25; LUKE 22: 63-65*

*Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." 2 Peter 3: 3-4(NKJV).*

As we draw closer to the coming of the Lord Jesus, and the end of the age, the faith of the believers will be fiercely tested. A group of people will rise up according to the apostolic and prophetic writings of the scriptures, they are called scoffers or mockers. According to the dictionary; a scoffer is someone who laughs and speaks about a person or idea in a way that shows that they think that person or idea is stupid or silly.

Apostle Peter forewarned us that at the close of the age scoffers will mock at the promise of the Lord Jesus' return, claiming that if Jesus intended to come, surely He would have already come. These people will make a mockery of believers, they will disdain, scorn, deride, and ridicule believers for their belief in the return of Jesus. Usually, men are stirred up by the devil to carry out such evil because they are spiritually blind, ungodly and unable to accept the truth.

Luke 22:63-65 tells us about the very last thing that was done to Jesus before He was crucified; He was mocked. When someone is mocked, or scorned at, his confidence is attacked, and his faith is demoralized.

The book of Jude told us that these people are ungodly, murmurers, complainers, and that they do not have the Spirit; they are fleshly. Some of these scoffers were once not only believers but were actually ministers of the gospel who were seduced by strange spirits and doctrines of devils. Apostle Jude urged believers to build up themselves on their most holy faith, not just for the purpose of the anointing but to enable us know and discern the mockers of this present age so that our faith will not be shaken.

In this Laodicean church age, the message of the return of the Lord Jesus is the least preached from our pulpits (Rev. 3:15-2. We no longer await the Lord's appearing. The faith of many is being tried and their hope dimmed. It is the hope of His imminent return and our ultimate redemption that energises our faith and spurs us on to holy living (1 John 3:3).

*PRAYER
Lord, unto You who is able to keep me blameless until Your appearing I commit myself, keep me from throwing away my faith and hope in Your return. Give me discernment to protect me from seducing spirits and doctrines of devils in Jesus' name, Amen.

Two African Women Still In Running For WTO Top Job.

Two African women are among the five candidates still in the running to take the World Trade Organization top job.

No Africans and no women have ever been at the helm of the global trade body. On Friday the pool of eight candidates was whittled down to five. It includes women Amina Mohamed of Kenya, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria, and Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea.

Male candidates still in the running are Liam Fox of Britain and Mohammed Al-Tuwaijri of Saudi Arabia. The narrowing of the field came after the WTO in recent days hosted consultations, dubbed “confessionals”, with all 164 member states.

The three with the least support, Jesus Saede Kuri of Mexico, Tudor Ulianovschi of Moldova and Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh of Egypt, were cut from the list.

The WTO has been leaderless since Roberto Azevedo stepped down as WTO chief last month, a year ahead of schedule.

The trade body was created in 1995 and has had three director-generals from Europe, and one each from Oceania, Asia and South America

The winner will be decided in the third round of voting in early November. But it is feared increasing politicisation of the organisation, which relies on consensus to reach decisions, could draw out the process much longer.

Whoever is named the successor will have a tough job ahead as the global economy is battered by the coronavirus pandemic and the United States and China are locked in a trade dispute.

The organisation is also facing attacks by Washington after cristicism from the Trump administration last year crippled the WTO’s highest judicial institution, the appellate body.

The US has refused to appoint judges to replace those retiring and threatened to leave the WTO.

Court Remands Pastor In Correctional Centre Over Alleged N.7m Fraud

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of a 45-year-old pastor, Paul Ojo, in a Correctional Centre in Ado-Ekiti over alleged fraud.

The police prosecutor, Insp. Oriyomi Akinwale, told the court that the defendant conspired and defrauded one Fakunade Ojo of N700,000.

Akinwale alleged that the defendant committed the offense between February and March at Ise-Ekiti, Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

He further told the court that the defendant, who is a pastor told the complainant, a member of his church, that he would help him to secure the necessary documentation for his trip to Dubai.

He said that since the complainant gave him the money, he neither provided the document nor refunded the money.
He said that the offense contravened Sections (8) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related Offences Act.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in the correctional centre, pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adefumike Anoma, rejected the plea by the defendant.

Anoma ordered that he be remanded in a correctional centre, pending the DPP’s legal advice.

He adjourned the case to September 29 for mention.
