Osinbajo: There’s Need To Take Another Look At Amended NBC Code

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says the Federal Government needs to revisit the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) amendment of the broadcasting code.
Osinbajo said this on Friday during a session with Nick Clegg, vice-president of Facebook’s policy and communication.

The code, which has stirred a lot of controversy, seeks to regulate content exclusivity, enforce content sharing and empower the NBC to determine prices at which content is sold to sub-licensees by rights holders.

Also, the fine for hate speech has been increased from N500,000 to N5 million.
Osinbajo said there is need to take a second look at the code so as not to “stifle the work of hardworking, creative people”.

“The NBC code is one where the is now activity around trying to take a second look at it. Those who say that it is pro-competition, it is one I think we should take a second look at,” Osinbajo said.
“Basically, it says if you have a licenced product for TV, you’re expected to share it with other platforms. It’s one which I understand the argument of those who say this is a violation of copyright and intellectual property which is a very strong point and this is why I think we have to take a second look at it and see whether there are ways of moderating it to be more acceptable so as not stifle the work of very very hardworking, creative people.”

Ikra Aliyu Bilbis, chairman of the NBC board, had accused Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, of amended the country’s broadcasting code “unilaterally” without involving relevant stakeholders.

Edo 2020: Atiku Knocks Buhari Over Police Siege On Wike

Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, has reacted to the police siege on Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently in Edo State.

Mr Wike, according to his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was barred from leaving a hotel he lodged in at the state capital, Benin City.

He is the national campaign chairman of the state ruling party on whose platform Godwin Obaseki, the state governor is seeking a second term in office.

His major challenger, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, is of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and enjoys the support of erstwhile national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole.

While leaders of the PDP are said to be under police siege, leaders of the APC are reportedly moving around freely despite restrictions on vehicular moment. TODAY POLITICS as at press has not independently verified the claim.

“A promise of free & fair election cannot be mere lip service. It’s a commitment & should be demonstrated by way of equal access & restriction to every stakeholder,” Mr Abubakar said in a Friday evening tweet.

“Blockading the hotel of @OfficialPDPNig governors in the eve of the Edo election isn’t a good way to show fairness,” the opposition candidate in the last presidential election added.

He is referring to the assertion of President Muhammadu Buhari who promised free, fair and credible election during the exercise tomorrow.

FG Apologises For Asking Bank Account Holders To Re-Register

The Federal Government has apologised for asking all account holders in the country’s financial institutions to register their details again.

It was reported that the FG earlier asked all account holders in banks, including insurance companies, to fill and submit a Self-Confirmation form.

The order was given despite the possession of the Bank Verification Number and the National Identification Number by account holders on Thursday.

Failure to do so, the Nigerian government threatened to block access to defaulters’ accounts or impose a monetary penalty.

The order to fill another Self-Confirmation form, despite the existing BVN and NIN, had attracted condemnations on social media.

However, in a tweet on Friday, the government apologised for misinformation.

It tweeted, “We apologise for the misleading tweets (now deleted) that went up yesterday, regarding the completion of self-certification forms by Reportable Persons. The message contained in the @firsNigeria Notice does not apply to everybody. FIRS will issue appropriate clarification shortly.”

In a press statement, the Federal Inland Revenue Service explained that only “reportable persons” are expected to submit the form.

The statement read, “This is to clarify the publication for financial institutions account holders in Nigeria to complete the self-certification form, pursuant to the Income Tax (Common Reporting Standard) Regulations 2019 which is for the fulfilment of Automatic Exchange of Information Requirements.

“The Self Certification form is basically to be administered on Reportable persons holding accounts in Financial institutions that are regarded as “Reportable Financial Institutions” under the CRS.

“Reportable persons are often non-residents. And other persons who have a residence for tax purposes in more than one jurisdiction or Country.

“Financial Institutions are expected to administer the Self Certification form on such account holders when the information at its disposal indicates that the Account holder is a person resident for tax purpose in more than one jurisdiction.

“The information that indicates an account holder is a resident for tax purposes in more than one jurisdiction, is expected to be available to Financial Institutions during the account opening processes for the KYC and AML purpose.”

Earlier, the Nigerian government said all persons holding accounts in different financial institutions are required to complete and submit the form to each one of their institutions.

It had tweeted, “This is to notify the general public that all account holders in Financial Institutions (Banks, Insurance Companies, etc) are required to obtain, complete, and submit Self – Certification Forms to their respective Financial Institutions.

“Failure to comply with the requirement to administer or execute this form attracts sanctions which may include monetary penalty or inability to operate the account

Obaseki To Electorate: Don’t Shed Blood For My Re-election

Governor Godwin Obaseki and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said his second term ambition is not worth spilling the blood of anyone in the Edo State governorship election holding tomorrow. He reassured that the governorship election would be peaceful and violence-free. Speaking shortly after one day prayer and fasting session for a peaceful election, organised by the Edo Christian Community for all the governorship candidates ahead of the election, Obaseki urged eligible voters to come out en masse without fear of intimidation or harassment. Obaseki said: “The church is the pillar on which we rest, and therefore, I have no fear whatsoever.

I take actions and people say I am very courageous, but it is God and not me. I have the church and God behind me, so why should I be afraid? “Ordinarily, an election is supposed to be a contest where people go to sell their ideals and citizens in their own freewill go and vote for those ideals they believe in; it shouldn’t be one where people will do anything to get power. “Election should not be one in which we shed blood because election will always come. If you die in an election, you will not be there in the next one to vote. So there is no need for violence.”

The governor noted: “It’s unfortunate that where we are today we are all afraid that there will be trouble, that there will be crisis and violence. But by the grace of God, we will all come out and vote and there won’t be any bloodshed. “There is no need for any violence and if anybody decides to act in a violent manner, just walk away because our lives are very precious. I have a covenant with God; if it will cost the blood of anybody for me to get into power, he should not let me have power.”

prayed that God would make peace reign before, during and after the election. “In this election, rigging and evil will not have their way. We knock the engine of their operation; Edo people shall go out and vote their consciences and the will of God will be done,” the clergy prayed

"Don't Make More Enemies For Buhari" - Lauretta Onochie To 'Name Droppers'

It was reported that President Buhari's media aide, Lauretta Onochie has blasted name droppers who she accused of claiming to have President Buhari's backing when embarking on illegal, unconstitutional and undemocratic ventures.

Lauretta Onochie who asked such name droppers to stop making enemies for President Buhari, stated that the Nigerian leader has enough enemies. She insisted that Buhari will never be part of any scheme to break the law or side with anything undemocratic.

"DEAR NAME DROPPERS

It's disgusting how people claim that they have Pres. Buhari's backing especially when embarking on illegal, unconstitutional and undemocratic ventures. Our President is a law-abiding Citizen of this great nation.

He will never be part of any scheme to break the law or side with anything undemocratic. Stop making enemies for him. Though unjustifiable, Pres. Buhari has enough enemies. Please stop! Its no longer funny. Stop! Enough is Enough."

PDP National Leaders Storm INEC, Seek Stoppage Of Results Replacement

…As INEC Gives Assurance Of Conducting Credible Poll

…Operates Virtual Situation Room, Monitors Distributing Vehicles
....
The national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday stormed the national headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and demanded that illegal replacement of results, which he alleged had characterized previous elections, be halted.

The PDP leaders, which were led by the National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus in a peaceful protect to submit their petition at INEC headquarters, demanded for free and fair elections in Edo and Ondo states and regretted that the illegal practice of replacing results, had dragged Nigeria from its leadership level in Africa to a shameful position, to the extent that Ghana had now took the lead in the conduct of free and fair election.

Secondus, who informed the INEC leadership that PDP had it on good authority that over 1500 members of Department of State Services (DSS) have been deployed to Edo state, expressed fear that alleged replacement of results will happen again.

The PDP leadership specifically drew attention to instances to states like Osun, kano, Kogi, Bayelsa where those practices had occurred in the past.

“We make this request in view of the party’s ugly experiences in Osun, Kogi, Kano and Beyelsa states, to mention those few, which showed that promises alone had not delivered free and fair elections,” he said.

The PDP also lamented that assurances that were given in the past by the commission ended up as mere political talk.

The party said that this time around, INEC should go beyond promises and defend its integrity by ensuring free and fair elections in Edo and Ondo state, adding that anything on the contrary would spell doom for democracy in the country.

“The importance of an electoral umpire cannot be overemphasized in ensuring the sanctity of elections and offering the people hope that our democracy was heading in the right direction,” he said.

Expressing concern, Secondus said: “We are deeply worried and in pain because of our past experiences especially those of Kogi and Bayelsa. We are worried because the country is in crises, crises in economy, crises in the area of security, virtually in all facets of the life of the nation and the only way out of all these crises is to conduct free and fair elections which will at most reduce the tension in our country today.
