Igbo Group Threatens Showdown With Police Over Alleged Torture, Killing Of Pro Biafra Agitators

An Igbo Socio -Cultural Organisation, Igbonine Kwezenu, has threatened to drag the Nigeria police to the International Court of Justice, over what it described as constant killing of Igbo youths, who were clamouring for an independent Biafra Republic; as well as having majority of the youths in the wanted list of the police for no just course.

This was contained in a statement signed by the national coordinator and national secretary of the group; Nelson Udeh and Philemon Madu; respectively, which was also made available to Newsmen in Nnewi, yesterday.

The statement reads in part: “The contemplation to have showdown with the Nigerian police or, on the alternative, drag them to the International Court of Justice, came to us following series of confrontations the police were having with Igbo youths, under the auspices of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, when a good number of the agitators lost their lives.

“Just recently, a joint task force confronted IPOB members having their peaceful meeting at Enugu. That confrontation led loss of lives. This is just one of such incidences happening over and over again.
“One of such painful incidences happened sometime in 2014, when group of Igbo youths, who were members of MASSOB, having their peaceful meeting at Nkutaku area of Okpoko, a swampy area of Ogbaru LGA, Anambra State, were invaded by security operatives, and were teargassed, manhandled, and some lost their lives after sustaining bullet wounds.
“Leader of the youths, one Mr. Lotanna Charles Muoka, a vibrant youth activist, who was a strong advocate of Igbo emancipation, was declared wanted as a result of the Okpoko incident of 2014.”

When our reporter contacted police authorities at the Okpoko Division over the alleged 2014 incident in, they refused to comment on the matter; but sources within the division said the matter was an old one that could hardly be found in their record.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Haruna Mohammed, said the information was an old one; but promised to find out.
“It won’t be out of place for the police to declare IPOB or MASSOB member wanted; as might be the case in the alleged 2014 incident, purportedly involving the so-called Lotanna Charles Muoka; since MASSOB and IPOB are proscribed by the federal government, and the proscription is still in force.”

Spurs Sign Bale On Loan, Reguilon On Permanent Deal

Tottenham Hotspur have signed winger Gareth Bale and left-back Sergio Reguilon from Spanish champions Real Madrid, the English Premier League (EPL) club announced in a statement on Saturday.

Bale returns to his former club on a one-year loan deal, with British media reporting that Spurs will pay 20 million pounds in wages and fees for the 31-year-old Wales forward.

Reguilon, who spent last season on loan at Sevilla, arrives for a reported fee of 30 million euros (35.51 million dollars).

Bale made more than 200 appearances for Spurs between 2007 and 2013, scoring 56 goals with 58 assists before his then world record move to Real Madrid for 100 million euros.

He won four UEFA Champions League trophies and two La Liga titles with Real Madrid.

But he has divided opinion amongst the club’s fanbase, with some supporters frustrated by a perceived lack of commitment from the Welshman and his poor injury record.

Bale was poised for a move to Chinese club Jiangsu Suning last year before the deal fell through.

He endured his worst season at Real Madrid in 2019/2020, scoring only three goals in all competitions, and barely featured in their run to the Liga title.

His growing rift with manager Zinedine Zidane intensified when he did not travel with the squad for a UEFA Champions League clash against Manchester City last season.

The signings of Bale and Reguilon follow the arrival at Spurs of Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Ireland defender Matt Doherty and former England goalkeeper Joe Hart.(Reuters/NAN)

APC Rejects Result Of Edo Governorship Election

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Edo chapter on Sunday rejected the result of the Edo Governorship Election announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Benin on Sunday.

Chairman of the Edo APC Media Campaign Council, Mr John Mayaki, said in a statement that the party rejected the result, citing alleged strong arm tactics in the process.

“Our people were arbitrarily arrested, many of the figures were fabricated.

“Areas where we won, they cancelled them, they decreased the votes in areas we had advantage. They rejected our results and jerked up theirs,” Mayaki said.

According to him, the election was characterised by arbitrary arrests of local party members who could have resisted the outrage, while Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo was busy diverting attention with false alarm.

“Obaseki shouted that he was being rigged out and blamed INEC at the initial stage but that was to divert attention from the evil going on in the field,” Mayaki said.

He, however, thanked the APC loyalists for the support and urged them to remain calm as the party leaders were studying the result and would soon announce their decision and course of action. (NAN)
