Suarez Joins Atletico Madrid In €6 Million Transfer From Barca

Barcelona have confirmed that Luis Suarez has joined Atletico Madrid after the two Spanish sides came to terms on a deal for the Uruguayan star.

Atleti will pay Barca €6 million (£5.5m/$7m) to acquire the striker, who departs Camp Nou after six seasons with the club.

Suarez had been heavily linked with Juventus in recent weeks as the Italian champions have been in the hunt for a striker, but the Bianconeri moved on to other targets after Suarez was forced to go through a lengthy process of acquiring Italian citizenship.

Instead, he’ll head to Atleti after a stay with Barca that saw him claim 13 trophies while becoming the club’s third-highest all-time goalscorer, only topped by Cesar and Leo Messi.

Luis Suarez Goal 2Getty

“FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luis Suarez. The Madrid club will pay FC Barcelona €6 million in variables,” the Catalan club announced.

“FC Barcelona would like to publicly express their gratitude to Luis Suarez for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future.”

Suarez originally made the move to Barcelona in 2014, having emerged as a superstar during his time with Liverpool.

He went on to score 198 goals in 283 games for the Blaugrana, earning the Golden Shoe as Europe’s top scorer after scoring 59 total goals in 2015-16.

While at Barca, Suarez won four La Liga titles and a Champions League, as he famously scored against Juventus to secure that European title for Barca.

He’ll now join Diego Simeone’s Atletico outfit, giving the club an option up top following the departure of Alvaro Morata, who recently joined Juventus on an initial 12-month loan deal with an option to buy for €45m (£40m/$52m).Article continues below

Suarez scored 21 goals in 36 games for Barca last season as he battled injury midway through Barca’s campaign in what turned out to be his least-prolific season at the Camp Nou.

After arriving in August, new Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman told Suarez he would not be in his plans for the upcoming season, sealing the 33-year-old’s fate at Camp Nou.

Now with Atletico, Suarez could be ready in time for this weekend’s match against Granada with the club then set to visit Huesca next Wednesday.

Tension In Ebonyi Community Over Attack On Woman In Farm

Palpable tension has enveloped the Amaeze Community in Ishiagu, Ebonyi state, after 30-year-old Miss Chinenye Aroh, was brutally attacked and abandoned unconscious in a farm by yet-to-be identified assailants.

A relation of the victim, Christy Aja, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakiliki on Wednesday that Aroh was attacked in a remote farm at Ugwueziavo around 6am on Monday.
According to Aja, the suspects trailed their victim to tha farm, where they inflicted several machete cuts on her and left her in a state of unconsciousness.

“They assumed that she had passed on and fled the scene, leaving her in a pool of her blood.
“She usually leaves early in the morning anytime she wants to go to farm and there were few people going to farm by that time.
“My sister is not the troublesome type or somebody that keeps many friends.

She keeps to her self so we wonder why anybody would want to kill her in cold blood,” Aja said.
She said that passersby, who saw her lying unconscious in the farm rushed her to a hospital in the area, where medical doctors were battling to resuscitate her.

A former Chairman of the community, Mr Uchenna Anyim, said that the incident had left the entire community in fear and confusion.
Anyim described the attack as “callous and barbaric”, adding that the community had reported it to the Ivo Divisional Police Headquarters.
He said that the community would spare no efforts to unmask the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

He said: “The incident happened on Monday at Ugwueziavo and we have reported to the police.
“The victim has not died, though she’s in serious pains and has been in intensive care unit battling to survive.
“The entire community is in shock over the incident and we have vowed to uncover the perpetrator of this evil act against our sister.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Loveth Odah, confirmed the incident to NAN, saying that the command had commenced investigation into the matter.
“We have report from the Police Divisional Headquarters, Ivo that a woman was severely attacked, assumed dead after being inflicted with several machete cuts by her assailants.

Edo Governorship Election, The Verdict, Mood And Expectations

The much publicized governorship election in Edo has taken place as scheduled on Sept. 29 and the winner has emerged.

Looking back at the peaceful conduct of the election, it has, incontrovertibly, proved wrong cynics’ expectations of violence during the election, a development that many political observers see as a sign of hope for the country’s democratic process.

The election began with the enthusiasm of the electorates who complied with all security measures and filed out in various quarters of the state, expecting a credible election.

With peaceful presentation and impressive turnout of voters in most wards across the state, critics agree that Edo citizens really know what they want with respect to who governs them.

While security agencies, going by security reports, did not envisage violence, they, nonetheless, provided a security network described as a better deal by many observers and civil society organizations.

With total compliance with restriction of movement across the state, the process of making the election peaceful and credible was very smooth.

Even in fairly remote places such as Uzzebba, Igueben, Auchi, Ososo, Ekpoma, Jattu and Ughoton, among other towns and villages in Edo, voters expressed the willingness to contribute to the making of a leader for another four years.

But, who wins the Edo governorship election is a riddle solved by the choice of Edo citizens via the announcement of the results by the umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that announced votes cast for each of the candidates.

With the benefit of hindsight, Edo has 192 wards and 18 local government areas with most of electorates holding Permanent Voter Card (PVC) in Edo South district.

Now, for the election that produced the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki for a second term in office on Saturday, INEC announced that only 1.72 million voters had PVCs.

Out of this, Edo South District alone has 1,281,414 card carriers, meaning the attention of all the candidates would be in the district.

INEC however claims that the level of ineligible voters in Edo is on account of failure of many citizens to collect their PVCs.

So, observers believe that if there would be any electoral malpractice, it is likely to be more pronounced in Edo South.

Although some voters alleged that certain political parties attempted to induce them to vote for their candidates, the claim could not be substantiated by security operatives.

Even, Gov. Godwin Obaseki of the state who won the election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged that vote buying was visible in many polling units.

Obaseki stated further that he expected better preparations from INEC for the governorship poll, rather than voters waiting in the queue for more than an hour.

According to him, to wait for one and half hours in the queue before exercising his franchise was a bit disappointing.

“Given that this is a sole day election, I expected a bit more planning and preparation and resources should have been put into this election.

Obaseki, who won by scoring the highest votes cast of 307, 955, in a brief acceptance speech, however, dedicated the victory to “the collective resolve of the Edo electorates to destroy Godfatherism in the state”.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing a free and fair election; irrespective of the platform he contested the election.

Also, the Chairman of PDP in Edo, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, said that the people of the state voted for the governor again because they believed he meant well for the state.

Aziegbemi said: “This is somebody we can give the umbrella to, so that the people of Edo will smile again”.

During the accreditation and voting, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the peaceful and smooth electoral process.

“The process is good and going on smoothly; there is no thuggery and violence,” Ize-Iyamu said.

But in a twist, after the verdict, Ize-Iyamu, who scored 223,619 votes, expressed concern about the results of the election.

“I thank and appreciate my supporters who had to endure many evils, including being prevented from voting, for their support and determination during the election.

“I assure you all that I am studying the results along with other party members and will announce my next move,” he said in a message.

In the same vein, the Chairman, Edo APC Media Campaign Council, Mr John Mayaki, said that the party rejected the result, citing alleged strong arm tactics in the process.

“Our people were arbitrarily arrested; many of the figures were fabricated. Areas where we won, they cancelled them; they decreased the votes in areas we had advantage.

“They rejected our results and jerked up theirs,” Mayaki alleged.

However, among the citizens, opinions are divided on which political parties and candidates could deliver specific development projects in the state.

Many voters in the state note that while peaceful and credible elections are essential tools for the development of the state, a good candidate would be needed for such development projects

They argue that all stakeholders must ensure that efforts are made to make democracy work irrespective of personal interests.

Miss Gina Osewenkae, a teacher, said that the election was free and fair.

“We expect more from him for the next four years,” Osewenkae said while referring to the winner, Obaseki.

Mr Ehisunwen Osayande, a resident, said “majority of people voted their conscience. We commend the media and INEC for monitoring votes strictly”.

Also, Mr Lucky Osagie, a resident of Benin, said that the Edo election had taught Nigerians to defend and wait for their votes to be counted after elections.

“Nigeria can have a free and fair election if godfatherism is put aside. INEC did a very good job by monitoring votes strictly,” Osagie said.

Many residents of the city also commended the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, for maintaining neutrality in the election.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the INEC, and security agencies for the success of the election.

IPAC described the poll and its outcome as exemplary and recommended the same method applied in Edo for the Ondo State governorship election on Oct.10.

IPAC Chairman, Tade Ademola said that the level playing ground allowed by the President and INEC had further deepened Nigeria’s democracy.

Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu and other 12 candidates participated in the contest with 557,443 accredited voters and 537,407 valid votes.

The rejected votes were 12,835 and the total number of voters cast was 550,242.

Many political analysts, therefore, conclude that holding such election amid forecast of violence which never occurred is a testimony that if political actors allow the will of the electorates in any election to prevail, there will be less apprehension during elections. (NAN)

We’ll Leave No Stone Unturned To Rid Anambra Of Cultism – CP

The Police Command in Anambra says it will leave no stone unturned to rid the state of cultism and crimes associated with it, as Christmas and New Year approach.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr John Abang, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Awka.
NAN reports that 80 suspected cultists were arrested from different parts of the state between Sept. 1 and Sept. 21 by men of the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS), led by CSP Uche Oyinnaya.

Abang had said that SPACS recovered dangerous weapons, including two pump action pistols, 10 machetes, two daggers, one double barrel gun, two locally-made pistols, three live cartridges and cult materials.
He said that 40 of those arrested had been charged to court, 15 screened out and released unconditionally and five under-aged placed under police supervision, while 20 were still undergoing investigation.

The commissioner said that among the suspects was a 16-year-old boy, who was arrested with a double barrel gun in a school compound in Igbo-Ukwu, Aguata council area of the state.
“SPACS, during the period under review, raided various hideouts and black spots where cultists are suspected to be hibernating at various locations within the state.

“The areas include Ogidi/Nkpor axis, Awka/Amansea axis, Onitsha /Nkpor axis, Oba/Nnewi axis, Nsugbe/Nkwelle-Ezunaka axis, Ogbunike/Abagana, Nawfia, Nimo/Abagana axis, Ifitedunu/Awkuzu axis, Amikwo, Nsugbe/3-3 axis and Ebenebe /Ugbenu axis.
“From all the raids carried out, a total of 80 suspects were arrested, out of whom 40 suspects were charged to court, 15 suspects screened and released unconditionally, five placed under police supervision for being under-aged and 20 still under investigation,” he said.

The commissioner blamed the rise in cultism in the state on parental failure, adding that parents were no longer monitoring the movements of their children and the kind of company and friends they were associating with.
Abang said a strong and friendly rapport between parents and children could reduce the involvement of the under-aged in cultism.
He, however, warned that any person with proven case of cultism practice would be not only be arrested but prosecuted and be subjected to appropriate punishment.

The police commissioner promised to support SPACS with personnel and logistics to make them brace up for the task.
Aban said that he had discentralised the operations of SPACS across the eight area commands in the state to burst any hideout and arrest suspects anywhere in the state.

According to Abang, cultism breeds many forms of crime in the society, and more importantly, with the approach of the Yuletide.
“We expect a surge in crime due to increased activities but as the Boys Scouts will say, we are ever ready to make Anambra very uncomfortable for cultists and criminals of any guise,” he said. (NAN)
