We've Not Been Allowed To Leave For Six Months, Workers At Indomie Cry Out For Help
Workers at De United Foods Industries Limited, makers of Indomie noodles, have cried out for help over what they described as modern-day slavery and unfair labour practices meted out on them since March.
The workers said cooks, drivers, nannies, stewards and other groups working for the largely Asian staff of the company, had not been allowed to return home to see their families by the management of the company under the guise of preventing the spread of COVID-19.
The workers in a statement on Thursday said, “Ironically these bosses go out everyday including attending social functions while a few of them have even contracted the COVID-19 and infected the helpless domestic workers. The affected domestic workers are largely drawn from those living with their bosses around Ikoyi and Victoria Island parts of Lagos.
“The Federation of Informal Workers Organisations of Nigeria, a network of working people under informal employment in Nigeria, was alerted about this development almost two months ago during which time efforts were made to reach out to the management of DUFIL to review its inhuman policy without any response or acknowledgement of the effort.”
They called on the Nigerian Government, investors and the international community to intervene in ensuring that they were released to leave the confines of their bosses homes where they had been denied access to public holidays, weekends.

Maikaba Rubbishes Plateau United Exit Rumour
Plateau United technical adviser, Abdul Maikaba, has rubbished talks he is at the exit door of the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, champions.
The media has been awash with speculation that the former Akwa United handler was set to quit the Tin City side, preferring to lead the Nigeria U20 National Team, Flying Eagles.
Even though Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, are yet to announce a substantive manager for the U20 side, Maikaba’s name has continued to reverbrate as most suited replacement for coach Paul Aigbogun, who was in charge when the squad flopped at the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Poland.
But Maikaba has exclusively told Orient Sports he has no intention to part company with United. He revealed that he is preoccupied with preparing the club for the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League as well as the domestic NPFL and Aiteo Cup competitions.
“Those who are peddling the rumour that I’m leaving Plateau United, where did they say I’m going to”?, he querried rather rhethorically.
“You don’t build Castle in the tin air. If you know that one is moving out, you should as well know, or be able to tell where he is going to.
“Sab, you know me very well. I’m don’t breach any contract I sign. When I sign a contract, I try to see it through to the end. And this (with Plateau United) won’t different.
“When I came here, I signed a two-year-contract. So I still have year remaining on my contract and I’m determined to see it off. I will complete my contract terms here before anything.
“We have the continental (CAF Champions League) and the NPFL as well as the Aiteo Cup to challenge for this season and that is my focus for now. We need the best of preparation we can in order to achieve our target”, he said.

‘Self Believe’ Is Our Key To Conquer Young Boys – Coach Egbo
KF Tirana of Albania Nigeria born coach, Ndubuisi Egbo has exclusively told Orient Sports that his players believe in themselves and their abilities is the strongest weapon they are banking on to upstage Swiss giants, Young Boys, in the last qualification match of the 2020/2021 UEFA Europa League qualifiers.
The winner of the epic tie, billed for the 32,000-capacity Wankdorf Stadium, on October 1, in Switzerland, will earn a berth into the group stage of Europe’s second tier league.
Egbo’s Tirana saw off Serbia’s Dynamo Tbilisi 2-0 in the first round preliminary games of the UEFA Champions League but a 1-0 defeat by Red Star Belgrade in the second round fixture saw their top league ambition crushed.
But that loss earned them a bragging right for the clash against Manager Gerardo Seoane’s Young Boys.
Egbo says playing in the Europa League will be a huge manifestation of the experience and confidence his boys has garnered playing in the Champions League.
“We believe in ourselves”, quips in the former Super Eagles goalkeeper.
“We always believe we can do it. And when the confidence in the players is high, result comes”.
Tirana were eliminated from the more prestigious UEFA champions League 1-0 by Red Star Belgrade inside their Arena Kombetare pitch.
Despite the defeat which saw them down to the europa League, Egbo reckons he was proud of his team and himself too.
“Red Star Belgrade are a strong side by all standards in Europe. I wanted us to win but losing to such a big team by a slim 1-0 speaks volume of the quality and potential of our team.
“Now, the players have grown more in confidence and are good to roll on any team now.
“Young Boys are a big team in Europe but I’m optimistic my players will match them toe to toe.
“For me, it is joy and pride coaching this team in the European competitions.
“In 2004, I played in the European continent with them as a player then.
“Now, I’m leading them back in the continent as a coach and I’m pleased about that”.
The one time Enugu Rangers and Julius Berger of Lagos shot stopper reveals that standing in the team’s dug out in the European Championships has endeared him more into Albanian public glare and acceptance.
“Sometimes, when I walk along the road, the Police, aged people, between 80-90 years old, would stop me and ask ‘are you the coach of KF Tirana?’.
“Yes, not everybody would be your fan. It’s also the same back home in Nigeria.
“But I must say about 90% of the fans here are right behind me and I’m happy about that”, Egbo said.
