ON THE AWAKENING PROGRAM TODAY BEEN THE INDEPENDENCE DAY, NIGERIA @ 60
TOPIC: Nigeria At 60 and The Future Of Nigerian Youths
RADIO PRESENTERS: Lyrics and Winnie

Lyrics: Are you proud of Nigeria @ 60?
Winnie: For that, I keep hoping for Nigeria and I’m proud to be Nigerian.

Lyrics: What is YALI?
Florence: YALI means Young African Leadership Initiative.

Lyrics: To you Florence, Are you proud of Nigeria @ 60?
Florence: Frankly Speaking, I’m proud, but there a lot we have to do. We are focusing on the wrong this. We are not harnessing our potentials as a country, but I love the fact that the youths are beginning to understand and wake up to the call. We waste our resources on things that does not matter. They are working to bring Industrial innovation. Things are not moving the way they should move, it’s a baby step compared to where we should, or have been.

Lyrics: To you sir, At 60, are you proud of Nigeria?
Augustine: Yes, I’m a proud Nigerian, I’m a proud inheritor of our collective heritage, 60 is just a number. The youths form the critical mass of society practically our country Nigeria, are also the lever in Nigeria development. Demographically, the youths form more that 60% of the entire population Where does the youth find their position? How can they chart their course? In Nigeria we keep recycling the old people in offices, the youths need to re-position themselves, establish themselves. The need to prepare themselves and key into the global best practices, public service and that is called Entrepreneurship.

Winnie: You wanted to say something Florence?
Florence: He said, The Older Audience. Nigeria we know are the biggest in Africa. We don’t have enough policies to drive the country. The policies we know are so diminishing to enable an average Nigerian Youth grow. And they trying very hard in the entrepreneurship sector.

Winnie: I wish Nigeria is a person, we would just invite her into the studio.
Prof. Augustine: Entrepreneurship is the key. Young people need to equip or empower themselves with the prerequisites knowledge like education, confident. Life in pre-school is a different ball game. So, you need to arm and prepare your mind that you’re going to meet a competitive world and do not wait for the government to do all things. Prepare yourself in such a way for a competition. When you equip or work for yourself, you become needed in the society. Like a spartan, you be on your stealth or you return with your stealth.

Winnie: Our topic is Nigeria @ 60 and the future of Nigerian youths. What are those practical challenges that the Nigerian youths are facing at the moment?
Prof. Augustine: Like I said, it’s not the best time to be born a Nigerian. We have a Nigeria where nothing, practically nothing is working. In Nigeria situation, the poor infrastructure the ethnic issues, the political issues, poverty, illiteracy, unfair competitive environment. Nigerians are survivors because of poor leadership, you prepare like I said as if you are going for a war and stop blaming the system. Nigerians are excelling wherever we go. Nigerians are survivors and strive for the best. Human Capital Empowerment is the main factor for production, should be a priority. We look forward to a better Nigeria. Prepare yourself for the worst, that’s the way to scale it. If you read the book, “Audacity of the Hope”, you will understand better.

Winnie: What is the challenge of a typical Nigerian Youth?
Florence: Well, we have poor infrastructure, poor road transport system, poor hospital care, low power supply that does not encourage the sector that need power to work and a lot. Everything is a challenge to an average Nigerian Youth. We should come to a stage that the government are able to make policies that are favourable to the Nigerian youths. An average Nigerian youth is industrious, innovative, a critical thinker, but we don’t have governments who are encouraging.

Nigeria At 60: Ugwuanyi Receives Peace Award

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has been inducted as the first Fellow of the Institute of Peace, Conflict and Development Studies (IPCDS) of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Enugu.

Speaking during the induction, the Director of IPCDS, Prof. Felix Asogwa disclosed that the choice of Gov. Ugwuanyi, which was a unanimous decision, was made “on account of Your Excellency’s sterling qualities and achievements in Enugu State, since 2015, especially in the area of peace-building."

The Director described the governor as a man of peace and an astute conflict manager, explaining that the Institute, which is novel in the entire South-East and South-South geo political zones, is saddled with the responsibility of “academic training and sundry needs of individuals, groups and government in the aggregated areas of peace, conflict, security, defence, leadership and development, among others”.

Performing the induction, Prof. Asogwa said: “In the fulfillment of our mandate as a research-based institution, we have painstakingly studied your leadership style, which is anchored on accommodation, openness and strategic engagement with various interest groups in the state and beyond, and came to the conclusion that only such style of leadership could have spawned such unprecedented developmental strides, which your administration has recorded since inception.

Responding, Gov. Ugwuanyi who delightfully accepted the fellowship award, pledged his support to the goals of the Institute, promising to live up to the highest ideals expected of him as a fellow of the body.

The governor expressed deep appreciation and immense gratitude to the Institute as well as the Chairman and members of ESUT Governing Council, noting that he was humbled when he received the information of the induction “particularly because the award is predicated on my modest efforts on Peace and security which remain cardinal to democracy and governance”.

The governor pointed out that in spite of the difficulty of achieving and maintaining peace and security, his administration has been “investing heavily on and still committed to doing whatever I can to continue to build and sustain peace in Enugu State and to continue to guarantee the safety of all citizens and residents”.

He revealed that “consequent upon the resolution of the South East Governors Forum, I remain the first Governor to constitute and set up Enugu State Forest guards backed by legislation in addition to the Neighbourhood Watch to check the menace of criminals, especially in our rural communities which aligns with my policy and emphasis on the development of our rural communities”.

According to him, “these deliberate steps, including support to Law enforcement agents to strengthen their commitment and increase their capacity to check crimes within Enugu State, are undoubtedly cardinal but certainly not sufficient to guarantee peace and security.

“This is why as Governor, I spend a lot of energy, time and resources to encourage all citizens, groups and communities to eschew conflicts and live in peace. Along this line, I have taken pains to run an all-inclusive government devoid of divides that weaken rather than strengthen the chains of peace and security.

“Beyond all these human efforts, I have from the date of my oath of office as Governor handed over Enugu State to the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob and the awesome God of David. ‘Enugu State is in the Hands of God.’

“My desire as Governor is to continue to work on peace and security until they can habitually be taken for granted by all citizens and residents of Enugu State. This award therefore touches on the very essence of our vision and mission in governance”.

Earlier in the citation on Gov. Ugwuanyi, the Institute stated that “the peace we have today in Enugu state has translated into a secured environment of existence, where people can sleep with their two eyes closed” adding that “Enugu State today is one of the most peaceful and secured State in the country and this has increased the confidence of investors that have identified the State as an investment destination, especially with the existence of Free Export Processing Zone”.

They maintained that “Governor Ugwuanyi’s managerial acumen in relation to the management of human and material resources is awesome”, pointing out that “in a country reeling in economic recession; a country where many states cannot afford to pay workers’ salaries, Governor Ugwuanyi has brought his Midas touch to bear”.

According to them, “Today, Enugu State is ranked among the three most resilient state economies in Nigeria; and one of the States that has kept faith with the prompt payment of workers’ salaries even when it is not an oil-producing State. His administration has repositioned the LG Areas in the state and cleared the backlog of salaries inherited by his administration.

“For instance, on October 15th 2016, various rural development projects were simultaneously flagged off in all the 17 LGAs. Apart from this, his administration has embarked on numerous legacy projects in the state that time may not permit their enumeration here.

“To add to the foregoing, Governor Ugwuanyi has demonstrated enormous capacity in managing and resolving conflicts in the state by adopting a bipartisan approach to governance. He has been able to manage the herdsmen crisis in most parts of the state and brought peace among the herdsmen and their host communities. He has been able to bring together sworn enemies to the table of peace and they shook hands and ate together.

“He has been able to resolve the intractable Oruku-Umuode conflict which had defied all previous solutions. During the COVID-19 national lockdown, he personally supervised adherence to the lockdown in our various borders at odd hours of the night.

“Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has demonstrated to humanity that peace is a product of positive mental attitude, while violence is the result of negative thinking. This is the lesson that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has taught us since his emergence as Governor of Enugu State. No legacy can be greater than this. Governor Ugwuanyi has indeed shown persistence in the presence of challenges; courage in the face of obstacles and resilience in the face of trials.

“His disposition to peace is one of the major reasons why the Global Society for Anti-Corruption (GSAC), recently appointed him as a Global Peace Ambassador. This appointment has shown that while many people may be disposed to violence, there are still men and women of honour and conscience who deny themselves a lot to seek and sustain peace at all costs. Such people are rare and Governor Ugwuanyi falls into this category. Despite the many studs in the way, Governor Ugwuanyi has remained as calm as a gentle dove; preferring to conquer him. This testimony aptly befits Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and we may well say that in Governor Ugwuanyi, Enugu State, humanity at the present time has reached its high water-mark.

“People like Governor Ugwuanyi are sent by God to redeem us from a sense of common place and futility, and are an inspiration to us not to weary in well-doing and promoting peace. Ugwuanyi has shown us a new technique in peace building, which we cannot ignore. We must praise him for taking a non-violent approach to governance in Enugu State; for demonstrating love instead of hate for his people. This, for us, is the most essential work; the most important of all the work being done in Enugu State today, wherein not only the people of Enugu State but the entire southeast will partake of.

“In Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Enugu State has seen a man without armies; without political thugs, without showmanship, with nothing but goodness; the goodness that is willing to be vilified by men of lesser understanding, whose disposition to good has risen from the north of Enugu to govern men in the east and west of Enugu State.

“Ugwuanyi has shown us the way out of political crisis and that way is the way of love, benevolence and non-violence. This approach is the moral equivalent of war against bellicosity and high-handedness in governance. Governor Ugwuanyi is indeed a man among men, a patriot among patriots and a dove of peace. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has taught us that where war destroys and tears apart, peace builds, strengthens and restores.

“For Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount that “Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God”, is absolutely true. It is in view of the numerous achievements of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in Enugu State, especially in the area of peace building that we proudly present him to you as the first recipient of the prestigious Fellow of the Institute of Peace, Conflict and Development Studies, (IPCDS), Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu”.

NIGERIA @ 60: WE ARE NOT WHERE WE OUGHT TO BE - GOVERNOR ABUBAKAR SANI BELLO

As Nigeria attains 60 years of independence, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has decried the persistent level of insecurity and its attendant consequences on the growth and development in the country.

Governor Sani Bello told Journalists in Minna, that the country's economy as well as the sociopolitical lives of the people will continue to dwindle unless a holistic approach is found to the security challenges and are tackled head-on.

"Security is key, and without it, the country will be struggling and it quest for sustainable development will be a mirage. We have tried as much as we can to support the security agencies, but there are allegations that the security apparatus is been compromised, which is highly regrettable".

He said the country has the capacity, potentials and wherewithal to be a producer rather than a consumer nation stressing that the nation's leadership must put her priorities right and build the courage to address all developmental challenges setting the nation back.

The Governor described as unfortunate how the country imports virtually everything adding that it was regrettable to see an oil-producing nation like Nigeria importing fuel while allowing it's infrastructure to irresponsibly decay.

"The importation of those things we can produce has led us to sustaining the industries abroad, and that is why we have found ourselves in this present situation as it were".

"I hope, at 60, we are able to tell ourselves the bitter truth. We all know what is right and wrong, but we don't have the courage to confront it. We must open a new chapter towards revitalizing and diversifying our economy and ensure that we invest in the future for our younger generation by resuscitating our moribund, dead industries".

Governor Sani Bello, however, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for retracing the development trajectory of the nation and executing policies and programmes that will, in the long run, energize and revitalize the country's ailing economy.

Nigeria @ 60: Sixty Years In The Wilderness

Today 1st October, Nigeria clocked sixty years of nationhood. That is, sixty years after colonialists handed off control to aborigines, who has since managed the affairs of the country. It signifies how long Nigeria has been an independent nation, free from colonial rule that stretches several decades.

It should be a moment of celebration and presents an opportunity to gauge the progress of the country. Sixty years is a whole lot of time to access how we've faired under self-rule and make an informed judgement on whether the independence we got in 1960 is serving its purpose.

When Nigeria's founding fathers fought and secured independence, they were so assured that it would better serve the people and fast track development. They were persuaded by the abundant potentials, both human and natural endowments, possessed by the country and believed it would drive inclusive growth and bring about a formidable nation.

But here we are, sixty years after, and nothing is really playing out as envisaged. Those dreams that heralded independence have largely been eroded, and worse, Nigerians are left with a sordid experience that raises a silent question– was independence actually worth it?

Reminiscent of the biblical Israelites and how they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, Nigeria shares a similar story, except that her time in the wilderness has surpassed that of the Israelites and still counting. This is well written in every aspect of the country, whether it is the economy, security, welfare, or infrastructure. Everything is plain and there is a lack of anything to cheer about.

Independence anniversary should be the most important date in any country calendar. But what October 1st do to many Nigerians is to remind them of how long they have been in the wilderness. Though the Bible gave some perspectives on the tortuous journey of wilderness in the book of Numbers 13: 1-13, but seeing it play out in reality, is an unpalatable experience.

At the actualization of independence in 1960, Nigerians poured into the streets in jubilation and were full of optimism that it will usher unrestrained developments and endless opportunities for citizens. The general perception then was that having locals administer the country would encourage transparency, human dignity, and equitable application of resources available to Nigeria.

But things turned out entirely different from anticipations as Nigerians are not having it any better in the hands of the locals that took charge of the country since 1960. Fear and flight, death and despair, oppression, and impunity of the ruling class have become a pattern and yet, there is no end in sight to the gross leadership failures that are stalling any meaningful progress in the country.

It is difficult to take pride in being a Nigerian, to celebrate "Independence Day", when there is hardly anything to show that we're truly independent considering the deteriorating state of the country and citizens. As the country marks 60 years, many Nigerians will either be taking to the streets or the internet to decry the unbearable hardship in the country and the insensitivity of government to their plights.

A few weeks ago, the Nigerian government hiked the pump price of fuel and electricity tariffs. Aside from that, it came at the wrong time. It is unimaginable that Nigeria, an oil-rich country, is lacking a functional refinery after 60 years. Epileptic power supply remains a challenge, a tariff hike was slammed on citizens. That is pathetic!

In addition to these is the deplorable state of Nigeria's road infrastructure network, putting many users through excruciating pains and the not so lucky lose their lives on it. What of education? It is one sector that has suffered greatly in standard and worth, leaving a multitude of citizens with no alternative but to move abroad for their studies. It is that bad and no remedy is in sight.

Extreme poverty and unabating strife among ethnic groups is another blight on the independence of Nigeria. That is the unfortunate faith poor leadership has wrought on many Nigerians, and as the country marks 60 years on Thursday, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of citizens who will be hiding in neighbouring countries as insecurity must have forced them to flee.

So, the expectations of freedom, that comes with independence are largely unseen or felt, and Nigerians are daily wandering in their country searching for a direction to better living and improved standards. This is not really what independence should be about, or it must be that Nigeria got a wrong version, and explains the invisible shackle tied around Nigeria's progress as a nation. This is wilderness and we should start talking on how to escape it as Israelites did centuries ago.
