Zamfara Governor Secures Release Of 26 Young Girls Kidnapped By Bandits In Katsina State (Photo)

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle has said that dialogue with bandits is still relevant just as he secured the release of 26 Katsina girls from bandits, IgbereTV reports.

A statement issued on Sunday, November 8, by Zailani Bappa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Media and Communications, said the girls, aged between 8 and 12, were released to the Zamfara State Government without payment of ransom.

"The girls who were kidnapped by bandits in Faskari local government area of Katsina state were brought into the bushes of Zamfara state but were miraculously discovered by the state Government and got released through negotiations held under the state Commissioner Of Police and the state Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs who are in constant dialogue on behalf of the Government with bandits in the state on the need to embrace peace and live a normal life," the statement said.

Governor Matawalle, who received the rescued girls said his administration will not abandon the peace dialogue with bandits as fire power alone cannot solve the problem of banditry in the state.

"This is a testimony to our vision for engaging the bandits in peace dialogue. For those who believe we are wrong to dialogue with the bandits, the securing of these minors who are all girls, unhurt, is indeed, priceless." he said.

The 26 rescued girls were medically checked and provided with new clothes. Governor Matawalle ordered for their safe return to Katsina state.

This latest rescue brings the total number of those released by bandits in the last one week to more than 40.

#endsars: Fresh protest threat over freezing of accounts
• Absence of youth representatives stalls Lagos Judicial Panel proceedings

Controversies have trailed the ex parte order obtained by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to freeze the accounts of 20 individuals and an organisation linked to the #endsars campaign.

Many Nigerians especially youths have taken to social media to condemn the move by the apex bank.

Also, youth representatives at the Lagos judicial panel, who had expressed outrage decided to boycott their participation at the sitting on Saturday.

Rinu Oduala, a member of the panel is said to have been affected. The Lagos Judicial Panel adjourned its sitting till November 14th because members could not form a quorum.

The Nation had earlier reported that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja authorised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to freeze the accounts of 20 #endsars promoters with immediate effect.

The accounts are domiciled in Access Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Fidelity Bank, First Bank, United Bank for Africa, and Zenith Bank.

According to details of the order obtained by The Nation, the request, filed by the apex bank on October 20, was granted by Justice Ahmed Mohammed.

Amongst those affected are Bolatito Racheal Oduala, Chima David Ibebunjoh, Mary Doose Kpengwa, Saadat Temitope Bibi, Bassey Victor Israel, Wisdom Busaosowo Obi, Nicholas Ikhalea Osazele, Ebere Idibie, Akintomide Lanre Yusuf, Uhuo Ezenwanyi Promise and Mosopefoluwa Odeseye.

One of the EndSARS promoters whose account got frozen, Adegoke Pamilerin said, “My account has been frozen for over 2 weeks. Apparently CBN froze my account before they got a court order. Nigeria My Country, where the big and mighty do as they wish”

The Nation learnt that the court directed the banks to freeze forthwith all transactions on the 20 accounts on the list annexed to the CBN’s application as Exhibit A and all other bank accounts of the defendants and respondents for a period of 180 days pending the outcome of investigation and inquiry currently being conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Many have condemned the move, describing it as an attempt to incite a second wave of #endsars protests across the country.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the deployment of all legitimate force against riotous and violent protests to protect lives and property of citizens.

Popular TV host, Frank Edoho, @frankedoho tweeted, “So this useless government is freezing the account of #endsars protesters. Young people came out peacefully to implore the leaders to terminate a section of the police responsible for murders and their response is to freeze accounts? This government contains old fools.”

Also, PDP Candidate for Lagos East Senatorial District, Babatunde Gbadamosi said, “Freezing the accounts of organisers of a peaceful protest is ECONOMIC TERRORISM by the CBN. Does Godwin Emefiele sanction the brutality of SARS?”

Activist Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong said, “Free advice to #endsars protesters whose bank accounts have been frozen: Before you go to court or take any legal action, apply for and obtain the CTC of the ex-parte motion with the affidavit and other processes filed by the CBN Governor.

@EiENigeria said, “The Nigerian government wants us, when faced with official actions with which we disagree, to obey and submit without daring to object. Case in view: seizure of passports, freezing of accounts by CBN, continued arrests of #endsars protesters, blame game, etc. #EnoughIsEnough”

Investigative journalist, @fisayosoyombo said, “The freezing of @Gatefieldco’s Journalism Fund account by @myaccessbank & Godwin Emefiele’s @cenbank is a disguised attack on press freedom. Because they funded journalists to cover police brutality stories? Did Gatefield start supporting public-interest journalism yesterday?… CBN has now become so idle that it’s most pressing mandate is chasing the court for an order to freeze the accounts of 19 individuals and a company that supported the #endsars movement. But ask them to strengthen the naira against the dollar and it’s mission impossible!

@ayosogunro said, “With every passing day, there is more reason for #endsars protest. Along with the original issues, now we protest against: #lekkimassacre and #oyingbomassacre, freezing of protester’s bank accounts, seizing of protester’s passports, the unconstitutional ban on protests.

INEC: We Lack Power To Disqualify Obaseki Over Alleged Certificate Forgery

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it does not have the power to investigate or disqualify candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo during the September 19 election of Governor Godwin Obaseki, over alleged forgery of the University of Ibadan’s (UI) certificate.

It noted only a court order could disqualify a governorship candidate from participating in an election.

INEC stated that it could not investigate the originality, authenticity, or otherwise of the disputed UI’s first-degree certificate presented to the commission by Edo Governor because it was beyond its responsibility.

The electoral commission, as the first respondent in the petition filed by Action Democratic Party (ADP) and its governorship candidate, Iboi Emmanuel, at the Edo governorship election petitions tribunal in Benin, made the submissions in its reply, with a copy obtained on Sunday.

The reply was signed by INEC’s lead counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The electoral commission said: “The information given by the third respondent (Obaseki) in the affidavit and documents submitted by him as a candidate at the election in INEC’s nomination form (Form C.F. 001) are presumed manifestly true or prima facie correct until and only if the contrary is proved and/or pronounced false by an order of the court.”

PDP, last week, admitted there were noticeable errors in Obaseki’s UI’s certificate, which it claimed occurred while filling the forms for the election in 2016.

It claimed the governorship candidate “mistakenly” wrote 1976 as his year of graduation, which ought to be his year of admission.

The PDP said: “At the time Obaseki was completing his Form CF001 in 2016, he deposed to an affidavit, stating that he had misplaced the originals of all of his certificates, while changing offices, with the intention to apply for a re-issuance if his certificates.

“The original certificate was issued in A5 size. In order for the photocopy of the certificate to be attached to Form CF001, the size was reduced to A4 and in the process, leaving out some information on the certificate.”

Five petitions were filed at the tribunal chaired by Justice Abdulrazak Abdulkareem against INEC; PDP; Obaseki and his deputy/running mate, Philip Shaibu; the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its standard-bearer, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Besides ADP and its governorship candidate, there were four other petitions from Action Peoples Party (APP) without joining its governorship candidate, Amos Areloegbe; Action Alliance (AA) and its governorship candidate, Ukonga Onaivi; Allied Peoples Movement (APM), excluding its governorship candidate, Igbineweka Osamuede, and Tracy Agol, without joining her political party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The petitioners prayed the tribunal to nullify the September 19 election over forgery, perjury, and massive rigging as well as ordering a fresh election with the exclusion of PDP and Obaseki.

What Will Happen If Donald Trump Refuses To Leave Office

President Trump has repeatedly signalled he won't accept the election result - but can he actually just refuse to leave?

Trump has laid the legal groundwork to undermine an election result, but could he cling on to power?
Trump has no power to hold on to office or cancel the election. Even if he holes up in the White House, his term will end on January 20.

The 20th Amendment of the US Constitution says a president and vice president’s term “shall end at noon on January 20… and the terms of their successors shall then begin”.

If he refuses to leave, what action would be taken?
A president immediately and automatically loses their constitutional authority upon expiration of his term or after removal via impeachment. Trump would lack the power to direct the US Secret Service or other federal agents to protect him.

While even former presidents enjoy Secret Service protection, agents are unlikely to follow an illegal order to protect one from removal from office.

Joe Biden could direct federal agents to remove Trump from the White House forcibly.

Could Trump order the army to protect him?
Trump would also lose his power as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Could he be charged if he refuses to leave?
Now a private citizen and not immune to prosecution, he could be arrested and charged with trespassing in the White House.

What is the most likely scenario?
Most believe he will eventually vacate the White House on his own accord albeit begrudgingly

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abdulkadir Jimoh, who made the disclosure in Calabar, gave the names of the suspects as 22year old Oke Sheriff and Eyo Nsa Etim, 35, adding that during investigation it was revealed that the suspects jumped into their victims’ compound through the kitchen and injured the children with a knife.

Dialogue With IPOB To Avoid Further Trouble In Nigeria – Orji

Former governor of Abia State, who is currently representing Abia Central in the Senate, Senator Theodore Orji, has asked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), to dialogue with Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB to avoid further trouble in the country.

Orji stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Sunday as part of activities to mark his 70th birthday celebration.

The Senator said dialogue with the dissident voices, including the IPOB, remains one of the best ways to achieve peace in the South-East geopolitical zone.

He noted that the Igbo, which has been crying of marginalisation over the years, deserved a listening ear rather than the use of force.

He said, “If there are dissident voices, the president should call them and discuss with them.

“He should find out the cause of their agitation and work out ways to address their grievances.

” He should see how he can bring them in and fully integrate them into the system.

“That is what will solve the problem of the country. Call the dissident voices to a conference.

“There is nothing bad in discussing with the IPOB. If you don’t discuss with them, they will continue to give you trouble.

“We can’t be happy when other regions have six states and we have five. It shows that we are marginalised and cheated. That is what is causing the agitation in the region.

“Some groups are agitating that the zone should be a country on its own. Others are demanding restructuring because it is glaring that the South-East is being marginalised.

“If you treat me fairly like you treat other persons and I’m convinced that you are sincere, I will not complain. It is when I look around me and I see that I am being marginalised and treated like a second-class citizen that would make people be agitating.”

Orji maintained that the South-East geopolitical zone remained marginalised being the only region with just five states and the major tribe that had not produced a President of Nigeria since 1999.

He said restructuring remained the only way out of the country’s social, economic, and political crises.

“My advice on how to move the country forward is already on the table and that is restructuring and resource control

“The issue of resource control should be addressed because the resources are coming from the same people who are agitating.

“You won’t expect us to keep quiet when we are producing and you are not giving us enough.

“Governor Nyesom Wike is shouting every day because the Niger Delta people are not getting the required attention they require as oil-producing region. We know the areas that are sensitive.” He said.

On additional state for the South – East, Orji said, “That is why we want to take the advantage of the ongoing constitution review process to push for the creation of additional state so that we could have at least six states like other geopolitical zones.”

He said, “We will do everything possible to abide by the constitution so that we would make it a reality. We are not keeping quiet on the matter at all.”
