Biden’s Victory Will Attract $700b To Nigeria, Other Emerging Markets, Say Expert

A win for former United States (U.S.) Vice President Democratic Party presidential candidate Joe Biden will attract $700 billion investments to Nigeria and other emerging markets, Renaissance Capital (RenCap) analysts have predicted.

RenCap Chief Economist Charles Robertson said a Biden victory will, in the long run, shift trillions of dollars to Nigeria and other emerging markets.

In a report to investors titled: “Biden’s victory, trillions into EM and lockdown” released on Thursday, Robertson explained that if that happens, many people will wonder why this election race was tight.

The expert at the global investment and research firm said he expects Biden to clinch victory this evening (London time) with Nevada due to give him six Electoral College votes after 5pm London time.

On the outlook for Nigeria and other emerging markets, he argued that U.S. President, Donald Trump’s possible defeat is good for emerging markets. He said global investors will start re-allocating cash to emerging markets in a big way.

He disclosed that already, Blackrock’s head of fixed income, who is responsible for $2.6 trillion of that firm’s $7.8 trillion in assets (Africa’s Gross Domestic Product is $2 trillion to put this into perspective), said they will invest more in merging market.

“The stock of Africa’s Eurobonds only topped $100 billion in 2018, and even if it is only Blackrock’s actively managed part of the business more like $2 trillion in all asset classes (perhaps $700 billion in fixed income), that starts to shift to Emerging Markets this could be very helpful.

“Our base case is that Foreign Direct Investment will stop being a net positive for the US due to Trump’s defeat, and portfolio flows will also go to EM, and together, these will drive the $ gradually weaker in coming years,” he said.

Robertson said this becomes a self-reinforcing cycle of emerging market forex appreciation giving good returns to dollar investors, which in turn attracts more money to emerging market and in turn pushes emerging market forex stronger.

He predicted: “Georgia is also looking like another Democrat victory (Biden is 23,000 votes behind with two per cent of the vote, about 100,000, still to be done and they have been flowing his way).

“This gives Biden 270 electoral college votes with Nevada, which is what he needs to win and 286 if he does get Georgia. With Pennsylvania votes counted yesterday – and Democrats expecting a big win from remaining mail-in votes, Biden might well end up with 309 Electoral College votes to 229 for Trump (who is likely to win North Carolina).”

Robertson explained that if that happens, many people will wonder why this election race was tight.

He explained that talk of recounts in Wisconsin have been dismissed by a former Republican governor Scott Walker as having no chance of changing the results – previous recounts have changed voting tallies by a max 300 votes but Biden is 20,000 ahead.

Robertson said that even if challenges in any states get to Supreme Court, the suspicion was that Trump will find that his appointees do not owe him a personal favour to come down on this side.

“They will instead do what is institutionally correct. It would be surprising if there were so many successful challenges that Trump could keep the presidency. So, our base conclusion from May that Trump would lose because that’s what always happens to incumbents in a recession year, will come good,” he said.

CALLERS REVIEW

Caller 1: Steven (Kogi). Let me start this way. There’s no reason at all for a man to rape a woman, even if she’s stacked naked. They are described as lower animal. My advice to young ladies is to stop visiting these guys in their homes, it can lead to rape.

Lyrics: How do we handle stigmatization?

Caller 2: (Oji River). There’s no reason to rape a woman. It should a capital offence.

Chiege: Handling stigmatization - Letting people know that, it’s not your fault. It can be your fault that you were raped and taking precautions on offers such as drinks, visiting a man’s house, because they are a lot of animals out there.

Chifumnanya: Public Enlightenment, having these announced everywhere, so that it’s easier to speak up. For everyone, who has been violated, without getting justice, there are consequences, it’s either the person begins to withdraw or as they grow they begin to become these things we speak. It very important that we need to teach children, that it’s important to speak up.
There are agencies, we can report to, such as: National Agencies for Prohibition against Trafficking (They have different units to addressing these crimes) they are in all the 36 states of the Federation. Sexual Assault Response Center (SARC) in Enugu. If people would be made to know that these things actual exists, it would help to curb these things.

Lyrics: Have we had cases where rape victims cases have been thrown away either from the NGOs and government officials?.

Chiege: For the Police yes, but NGOs have been the ones with the load. NAPTIP have been so amazing. They’ve been doing well even with the little funds they have.

Winnie: What is the level of reported cases in the South-East? What is the level of males, do we have males who have also come up to report cases of sexual abuse?

Chiege: From research it’s common in the North. I’m not saying it isn’t in the South-East too. Yes, there’s been reported cases according to NAPTIP. But, I haven’t seen any records of males reporting it. I don’t think it’s what men are more vocal about.

Chifumnanya: Some NGOs are really trying to document these. I know only very few cases and where boys reported. Parents need to be very sensitive with their children. A lot of males don’t report this cases. A lot of times, men do not see it as damages.

Lyrics: What do we think should be a penalty for false accusation?

Chifumnanya: Yes. When you intentionally decide to put the person in jail.

Chiege: I would agree with Chifumnanya. When you intentional decide to put the person in jail.

Caller 3: (Oji River). Any case without Evidence, I don’t think it would go far.

Lyrics: I think, it should be made known to people and potential perpetrators.

Winnie: What advice do you have for South-East Governors towards handling Sexual Violence?

Chiege: The government really have a lot of work to do. Again on the other hand, NAPTIP is a government agencies, but they could gather would more momentum to get this to work.

Chifumnanya: Just like she said, we need special courts to be adopted into the system to get justice served.

Lyrics: Yes, I think the Media also have a role to play in getting theses know.

RADIO PRESENTERS: LYRICS AND WINNIE

Lyrics: Rape of a woman is a degradation in our society today. It has also made our ladies so careful of what they wear, act, speak and even who they interact with.

Winnie: Every woman in her lifetime experiences violence. 971 Cases of Sexual Violence were recorded in Enugu, out of which 66 where perpetrated. What do you think of this?

Chiege: Gender based violence is a global issue. There are laws in place for these, but it doesn’t end there, there should be awareness. It should be enforced and perpetrators must be brought to book. Violators or potential perpetrators should know that there’s a punishment for this. It would be a signal for them. According to research, one in four girls are victims against sexual violence.

Lyrics: We are looking at enforcement. How do you think that the enforcement can be activated?.

Chifumnanya: Just like Chiege mentioned, first of all awareness, awareness in your home, what’s your rights. For enforcement, just like Lagos, Special Courts should be set up, which are very fast to bringing the violators to book. How do you get people to know? Awareness!. We also have to involve religious leaders, traditional heads, because they have a huge influence in the society.

Winnie: Can you give instances of sexual violence, that people do and will have to face the law for doing that?

Chifumnanya: Sexual violence is very broad. It includes attempted rape, gang rape, sexual comments, abuse a child, disabled person. You’re forcing the person, or making threats is sexual violence.

Winnie: For lady who wears a short gown and get sexual comments, What do you have to say of this?

Chiege: Let’s face reality, let’s understand the system. People really needs to be sensitize and awareness should be created.

Winnie: Do you think what women wear, can in any way lead or affect them?

Chiege: This a very controversial question that has raised a lot of opinions on different platforms, but for me a crime is a crime, there’s no justification for it.
Parents needs to sensitize their children. Self control is what should be incorporated in children and adults.

Lyrics: In addition with what she’s has said. Self Control should be a value. Do you think that most times, enforcement is not always the problem, but with speaking up?. How do we get a our young people to speak up?

Chifumnanya: Yes, everything boils down to this. But also the problem is still on the enforcement of which they shame the victims, but on both ends, sensitization is hugely needed.

Police Killed My Sister A Day Before Her NYSC Passing Out Parade - Lady Tells Abuja Judicial Panel

It was a tearful day as more petitioners in Abuja gave various testimonies at the Independent Investigation Panel set up to look into the allegations of brutality and highhandedness by personnel of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

While the session is ongoing in some states, that of the nation’s capital continued for the second day on Thursday at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.

Two cases came up for hearing but the first, which has to do with an allegation of unlawful detention, could not be heard as both the petitioner, one Bala Mohammed and the respondents or their representatives were absent at the venue.

The respondents were the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police at the FCT Command, and the defunct SARS.

The session was, however, thrown into a moody atmosphere as a testimony taken by one Chinenye Igwetu, narrated how her sister, Miss Linda, died as a result of the action of a policeman.

She recounted that Linda was killed by a policeman on the night of July 3, 2018, while on patrol.

Chinenye, who broke down in tears at a point while narrating what happened, said her sister had gone out with her friends in celebration of her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) passing out parade scheduled for the next day.

According to the petitioner, the police claimed that late Linda who was in the car with two others refused to stop when they were flagged down.

Following the refusal, the police were said to have burst the tyres of the vehicle but in the process, Linda was shot and that led to her death, Chinenye said.

Then she received a call from one of her sister’s friends who was also in the car at about 4:30am.

The man, identified as Mr Tobi, asked her to come over to the Garki Hospital and upon her arrival, she noticed a pool of blood at the entrance with several policemen there.

“I saw Tobi dressed in blood and he was in handcuffs. I asked him what happened, and he could not answer because he was still in shock.

“A policewoman there took me aside and asked if I was the sister to Linda. She was like I have to be strong and narrated the experience that they had to trail these guys (that’s my sister and her colleagues) to the hospital,” the petitioner said.

She added, “Tobi said on their way from Civic Plaza. After they passed the plaza, they heard a loud sound and he thought it was one of his tyres and he looked at the mirrors and saw that the tyres were ok.

“He said my sister tapped him slowly and was gasping for air and when they turned on the light in the car, she was already in a pool of blood.”

Chinenye noted that they later discovered that Linda had been shot, adding that the policewoman at the hospital identified the policeman who fired the shot.

After giving her testimony, she demanded justice and compensation for her family who she said were yet to get over the incident.

The sitting was later adjourned until Friday and scheduled to commence by 10am.
