Kentucky Elects Dog Wilbur As Mayor In US
Lexington Herald Leader LogoDog elected ‘mayor’ of Kentucky town. His name is Wilbur and he’s French
The presidential election may still be undecided on Wednesday morning, but a small town in Kentucky elected a new “mayor” in a landslide victory Tuesday night — a dog named Wilbur.
Rabbit Hash, an unincorporated community along the Ohio River, has elected a dog as mayor every four years since the late 1990s, WLWT reported. Residents cast their votes by donating to the Rabbit Hash Historical Society — $1 a vote.
The winner? Wilbur Beast, a French bulldog.
But Wilbur didn’t just win, he received a record 13,143 votes — the highest total a winning candidate has ever received, the historical society said in a Facebook post.
A whopping 22,985 votes were placed in all, resulting in $22,985 for the historical society.
A beagle named Jack Rabbit was the runner-up and Poppy, a golden retriever, came in third, the historical society said. They’ll serve as Rabbit Hash ambassadors, according to WCPO.
Wilbur will follow in the pawprints of Brynneth Pawltro, a rescue pitbull mix, who served as mayor last term, the outlet reported.
Wilbur won’t exactly oversee how Rabbit Hash is run, but keeping in line with the many dog mayors before him, his main task will be to help raise money for the historical society and other causes such as breast cancer and mental health, WLWT reported.

It was gathered that Udo, of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, was kidnapped on Sunday at his residence on Bateba Street around 7.30pm.

He said, “He was taken from his home around 7.30pm when there was no movement. How did that happen? This happened at Bateba. Soldiers are in that area enforcing curfew.
“Our colleague must be released unconditionally. Security agencies should know who the kidnappers are. The curfew should be reviewed if someone could be abducted during curfew.”

DSS Shuts Abuja School, Sacks 140 Teachers Over Request For Better Welfare
For demanding better conditions of service and regularisation of their appointment, the Department of State Services has sacked 140 teachers and other staff members of its Community Staff Schools, Asokoro, Abuja.
The service also shut down the institution and directed the 1,800 pupils in the nursery/primary and secondary classes to stay at home for two weeks.
One of our correspondents, who visited the school on Wednesday, was informed by a private security guard at the gate that all the pupils had been sent away pending the engagement of new teachers by the authorities.
Findings indicate that the primary school commenced pupil enrolment in 1992/93, while the secondary classes took off in 1998.
Trouble began when the teachers demanded the regularisation of their appointment and an increase in their salaries and other emoluments following increase in the school tuition.
In response, the authorities issued a letter of disengagement to the workers, including the principal and other administrative officials.
Before the face-off, the fee for the nursery and primary classes was increased from N25,000 to N35,000 for children and wards of the rank and file, while children of senior DSS officers were required to pay N45,000 up from N35,000 per term.
For children of civilians, the tuition was increased from N45,000 to N60,000.
The tuition for secondary school classes was increased from 35,000 to 45,000 for children and wards of the rank and file, while officers’ children were asked to pay N60,000 up from 40,000. Students who did not fall in either of the categories will pay N90,000 from N70,000. Other sundry charges were also said to have been increased.
However, in the letter of disengagement dated November 2, 2020, signed by the Executive Secretary, CSSA, M. Onyilo, the DSS hinged its decision to sack the school staff on poor financial situation brought about by the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nation’s economy.
The letter titled, ‘Disengagement from the service of Community Staff Schools, Asokoro,’ reads partly, “Due to the effect of COVID-19 on the Nigerian economy vis-a-vis the crippling financial situation of the school, I am directed to convey the Director-General, State Services/Proprietor’s approval to disengage you from the services of the school with effect from 3rd November 2020.”
A worker in the school, who pleaded not to be named, accused the management of denying the staff their due benefits, adding that the workers were being paid half salary despite the hike in school fees.
He explained that the workers had in 2018 dragged the school management to the National Industrial Court to regularise the appointment of the teaching and non-teaching staff, adding that the DSS failed to obey the court judgment.
He said, “When we got tired of their stories, we went to the National Industrial Court and won but they challenged the ruling at the Appeal Court and the court upheld the judgment of the industrial court in our favour in 2018. Our demand is that they should regularise our appointment so that our jobs can be secured.”
It was gathered that the management to obey the order, and the aggrieved workers then embarked on a peaceful demonstration on the school premises. They were, however, forcefully dispersed by armed DSS operatives.
Another worker said, “During the COVID-19 (lockdown), they paid us half salaries. The school was not in session and parents were not paying but now that we have resumed, they still told us it is either we accept half salary or wait for them to gather school fees so they can pay our full salary.
“They are also saying that even if they paid us the full salary, they would not settle the balance of the half salaries and we would not be paid leave grant. They also reviewed the condition of service and still reduced our October salary despite increasing school fees.”
The DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, has yet to respond to inquiries on the sacking of the workers.

Ossiomo Power Plant Begins 24-Hour Power Supply To Facilities In Edo State
The 55MW CCETC-Ossiomo Independent Power Plant in Benin City has commenced power supply in the state with the lighting up of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, a feat that has now opened up the electricity market in Edo State to drive industrial growth and attract private investors.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the commencement of power supply from the plant in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area has set the state on a path to becoming a hub for high-impact industries that require stable power to perform optimally.
He said, “The Edo State Government is excited to announce that the 55MW CCETC-Ossiomo IPP has commenced power supply in the state with the lighting up of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. This is a major feat. The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between the government and investors has effectively kicked off, setting off a ripple effect that will see the influx of power-intensive industries into Edo State.”
Aside the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the PPA covers the lighting up of the Edo State Secretariat on Sapele Road, government hospitals, street lights, industrial clusters, and other critical public assets. Private individuals, businesses and industries are also eligible to buy power from Ossiomo IPP.
According to Osagie, “With the development, power consumers in the state now have alternative power sources, with two operating power distribution companies, who would compete and provide a conducive environment for business owners and other investors to make decisions based on quality of services rendered.”
He said that the Ossiomo IPP has the willing-buyer-willing-seller arrangement with government and other private sector actors, who are willing to off-take electricity from the power companies, adding, “What this means is that private individuals and groups can off-take electricity for their businesses and other concerns from the 55MW CCETC-Ossiomo plant project. The project is designed to encourage a vibrant private sector in the state.
“The project further showed the commitment of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s commitment to ensuring a conducive business environment for investors to create jobs for youths,” he added.

US Election 2020: Biden Prepares For Presidency, Launches Transition Website
Joe Biden, Democratic candidate in the United States presidential election, has declared that he is confident of victory.
Biden addressed the nation on Thursday.
He noted that it was clear that he had won “enough states to reach 270 electoral votes to win the presidency”.
“Now, every vote must be counted. No one’s going to take our democracy from us…not now, not ever.
“I’m not here to declare that we’ve won, but I am here to report when the count is finished, we believe we will be the winners.
“I’m confident that we will emerge victorious. But this will not be my victory alone. It will be a victory for the American people.”
Official results as at 9:50am Nigeria time, shows Biden is slightly ahead of President Donald Trump.
But the race is too close to call as votes are still being counted in many states.
However, the former vice president has launched a transition website.
A message on the portal reechoed Biden’s comment that Americans will decide the next president.
“Votes are still being counted in several states around the country. The crises facing the country are severe — from a pandemic to an economic recession, climate change to racial injustice.
“The transition team will continue preparing at full speed so that the Biden‑Harris Administration can hit the ground running on Day One,” the statement read.
