Ronaldo Scores Twice In His First Match On His Return After COVID-19

Substitute Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice on his return after two weeks out with Covid-19 as Juventus won at Serie A rookies Spezia.

The 35-year-old, who missed four games, slotted in to make it 2-1 three minutes after coming on in the second half.

His second was a cheeky Panenka penalty after Adrien Rabiot's cool finish had given Juve a two-goal advantage.

Alvaro Morata gave the visitors the lead with a low angled strike before Tommaso Pobega equalised for Spezia.

The Turin club move up to second in the table with 12 points, four behind leaders AC Milan.

Ronaldo, who tested positive on 13 October, expressed his frustration on social media after failing to produce a negative result on the eve of his side's Champions League match against Barcelona on Wednesday.

After finally being cleared to play on Friday, the former Real Madrid forward was named as a substitute by coach Andrea Pirlo, who brought him on in the 56th minute. Three minutes later, Ronaldo scored when he took the ball around goalkeeper Ivan Provedel.

His second, and Juve's fourth, came 14 minutes from time after Federico Chiesa had been fouled in the area.

Dead Man "Breathing" In Imo After Corpse Was Exhumed 1 Year After His Death

Villagers in Umuoji, Amucha, in Imo state, were left in shock when the corpse of a dead man was exhumed and they discovered he was still "breathing" and his body was yet to decay.

In a video shared online, a crowd is seen gathered around a casket with the body of a dead man inside it.

"He's breathing, he's breathing," those in the crowd say in shock.

The man reportedly died on November 20, 2019, and was buried on 8 October, someone in the video is heard saying.

Another voice is heard saying the man has been dead for one whole year and has been buried for over three weeks yet he's still breathing. Another voice in the video interjected, saying the man has been buried for almost a year.

"Since I was born, I've never heard a thing like this but now I've seen it with my two eyes. Abomination," the man filming is heard saying.

The man filming explained that the man's corpse was exhumed because the land he was buried in is someone else's.

He continued: "He was buried in a land that is not his own, so his spirit cannot rest. Because the land he was buried in is not his."

The video shows the casket housing the corpse is already being eaten by insects. However, the man's body is still intact and has shown no sign of decay. Those gathered round the casket commented on this too.

The daughter of the deceased man was later invited and the casket was opened for her to identify her father.

FACT-CHECK: Did Desmond Elliot call for social media regulation as widely claimed?

There's nowhere in the speech where Mr Elliot advocated 'social media regulation in Nigeria'.

Verdict: The claim that Mr Elliot called for the regulation of social media in Nigeria as a result of the #endsars protest is misleading.

The headline of the reports did not match the content as there was nowhere in Mr. Elliot’s speech where he categorically said social media should be regulated in Nigeria.

Full text

The aftermath of the #endsars protest came with an influx of controversies, multiple streams of information, and disinformation. One of the comments that suddenly became controversial was that by Nigerian actor and politician, Desmond Elliot.

Desmond Eliot, who is representing the Surulere constituency at the Lagos House of Assembly, was a Nollywood actor who later joined politics as a state lawmaker.

At the Lagos State House of Assembly on Wednesday, October 26, 2020, Mr Elliot pushed for his fellow lawmakers to pay more attention to social media. He was reacting to the topic: ‘effects and aftermath of #endsars protest in Lagos; destruction of monuments, public and private properties,’ which was being discussed by the lawmakers.

Mr Elliot’s speech was met with criticism by social media users who rebuked him for referring to users as ‘children’ and for purportedly calling for social media regulation.

Some sections of the media reported Mr Elliot’s speech in this sense. For instance, thewillnigeria.com, a news website, claimed Desmond Elliot called for regulation of social media in Nigeria in line with the impact it had on the #endsars protest. The claim was presented in a news report that was headlined “Regulate Social Media- Desmond Eliot” alongside transcribed statements from Mr. Desmond’s speech.

Headline of the story on ThewillNigeria

Naijadiary came up with a similar headline with the lead, “A video captured the moment Nollywood actor turned politician, Desmond Elliot, called for social media regulation at the Lagos State House of Assembly.”

Nigerian social media also misinterpreted and amplified the lawmaker’s speech in like manner.

Alex Weenick (@Alexweenick )tweeted in reaction, “Dear Desmond Elliot, If you want to shut down social media like China, Also suggest that death penalty should be included for corrupt politicians like China is doing.#endoppression#endbadgovernance #endsars”

Like the news headlines, tweets, comments and other posts on social media misrepresented Mr Elliot’s speech as a call for the regulation of social media in Nigeria.

DUBAWA and PREMIUM TIMES set out to find out if Mr. Elliot actually made this call.

Verification

We traced the original video clip that captured the plenary session of the Lagos Assembly. A content analysis of Mr Elliot’s speech during the plenary session revealed that he mentioned ‘social media’ twice in his six-minute speech.

First when he said that “We need to address certain things: Nigerian youth; the social media; the social influencers. All of these are making the narrative that we’re seeing today. Except we’re joking with ourselves, social media, yes though good has its negative impacts.”

And when he also said, “Please celebrities; please social media influencers, stop the hatred already. You have a means constitutionally to change the government; it’s called your PVC.”

We could not trace anywhere within the speech where Mr Elliot said something about ‘social media regulation in Nigeria’.

Furthermore, thewillnigeria.com, seems to have doctored Mr Elliot’s speech to suit its headline: “Regulate Social Media- Desmond Elliot.” In one instance, keywords from his statements were excluded in the claimant’s reports:

Although the highlighted statement is quoted as Mr Elliot’s words, his actual statement transcribed from the audio is different.

The actual statement from his speech, contrary to the highlights in red, as reported by thewillingnigeria.com was “Except we’re joking with ourselves, social media, yes though good, has its negative impacts.” while ThewillNigeria quoted him as saying “Except we’re joking with ourselves, social media has its negative impacts.” omitting the phrase “yes though good.”

Conclusion

In his widely referenced speech, Mr Elliot never categorically called for the regulation of social media in Nigeria. The reports and associated comments on social media are misleading.

Sandy MacIver and Ellie Roebuck use Women's FA Cup final to point way ahead for England

A host of stars from the 2019 World Cup were on show at the Women's FA Cup final - yet it was two young English goalkeepers who thrived the most at Wembley.

Sandy MacIver and Ellie Roebuck showed a BBC One audience why the future is set to be bright for the England national team.

Manchester City won the cup for the third time in four years, with United States World Cup-winning midfielder Sam Mewis opening the scoring in a 3-1 extra-time victory.

But MacIver, Everton's 22-year-old goalkeeper, earned the player of the match award while her opposite number, 21-year-old England keeper Ellie Roebuck, also impressed with her agility at the other end.

Goalkeeping in women's football has often been a source of ridicule and debate in the past, perhaps an easy target for criticism from onlookers who have few opportunities to watch women's football on TV.

Now the first generation of full-time professional women's goalkeepers in England, who have received dedicated attention from a specialist coach, are showing the results of that focused investment, their hard work and their skill.

And on the evidence of Sunday's final at Wembley, MacIver and Roebuck may soon give incoming England head coach Sarina Wiegman a welcome selection headache before the rescheduled European Championship on home soil in 2022.

The Everton number one produced a string of superb saves, in particular reacting with lightning speed to keep out a Chloe Kelly effort on the rebound after Caroline Weir had struck the post.

Everton academy product MacIver, who rejoined the club in January after three years with Clemson Tigers in the USA, then showed great reflexes to tip a Steph Houghton header on to the post in extra time.

That came after Roebuck had dived high to her right to keep out Spain international Damaris Egurrola's header from a corner, with another brilliant save.

'MacIver is England's number one' - Kirk
Speaking about MacIver's display, Everton boss Willie Kirk said: "It was outstanding from start to finish.

"She took knocks and did everything she could to keep balls from going in the back of the net.

"Sometimes it wasn't pretty. It was a punch or a slap. But she was outstanding and very much showed that, for me, she's England's number one.

"She made great saves and was on the end of the wrath from me when she played long when we needed to keep the ball.

"But she showed she was a top goalkeeper and will develop her game."

Under Phil Neville's management, Roebuck is the current England number one, with a new generation of goalkeepers emerging to take over from veterans Karen Bardsley and Carly Telford.

Asked whether MacIver or Roebuck should be the next permanent England keeper, former Lionesses keeper Rachel Brown-Finnis told BBC One: "Ellie is still ahead of Sandy in my opinion.

"Sandy made some key saves and it would not have gone into extra time but for her."

On MacIver's reaction save from Houghton's header, Brown-Finnis continued: "That was unbelievable.

"Look at her reaction. It was 'get out of my way', full stretch - and what a save."

Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor said he was unsurprised by both keepers' performances, adding: "The levels are just going up and they are moving up really quickly all over the pitch.

"I saw Sandy was awarded player of the match. I would argue some players in our team deserved that but she made some really good saves.

"We had to call on Ellie at times to make a couple of important actions for us.

"I'm not surprised in the levels because people are making an effort to really push in the women's game - whether that is coaching or something else."
