PH DisCo Begins Distribution Of 1m Pre-Paid Meters In 4 States

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) on Monday commenced the distribution of about one million pre-paid meters to customers in four states.

The states are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River and Rivers.

Dr Henry Ajagbawa, Managing Director of the company, flagged-off the exercise in Port Harcourt as part of the National Mass Metering Programme (NIMMP) launched by the Federal Government.

Recall that the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had introduced NIMMP to end the estimated billing system by distribution companies in the country.

“The mass metering exercise will begin in Rivers state, followed by Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Cross Rivers until every single customer is metered.

“The exercise is going to be done in phases, and we are starting with phase zero with the deployment of 77,000 metres to homes and offices in Rivers.

“Thereafter, we will then move to phase one of the mass metering of customers across our franchise area,” Ajagbawa said.

He said that PHED was already discussing with its bankers and the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) to acquire hundreds of thousands of meters for the exercise.

He said that the company had a metering gap of over 851,000 in its coverage states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River and Rivers.

“Aside our metering gap of 851,000 meters, we need another 100,000 meters to replace other metres. So, we need a total of about one million meters.

“In addition, we expect that we should be able to install a minimum of 20,000 meters per month, meaning that it will take us about three years to meter the four states.

“On completion of the exercise within the shortest possible time, customers will no longer have complaints of estimated bill,” he said.

The managing director warned customers against meter bypass.

According to him, the company will arrest and prosecute customers found to have bypassed their meters to cheat PHED of its revenue.

“Customers should prepare to change their old habits by managing their electricity to enable them to afford their energy consumption.

“The question is, why put on your air conditioner or fan when the weather is not hot or when you are not in the room?

“So, we must begin to question our habits to see how we can conserve energy, because people will be made to pay what they consume on the meters,” he advised.

Diamete Miller, the Commissioner of Power in Rivers, commended the Federal Government for taking steps to address the estimated billing practice.

Represented by Lucky Anama, a Director in the power ministry, Miller said the state government had recently completed a 48 mega watts transmission station to boost power supply in the state.

“So, we are excited that this mass metering exercise will address the estimated billing system to enable Rivers people pay for only the energy they consume,” he said. (NAN)

Flavour Denies Getting Married Secretly

Nigerian High Life singer Chinedu Izuchukwu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour-Nabania, has denied the rumour trending on the Internet that he’s got married secretly.

He made the disclosure, during an Instagram live session with his fans on Sunday, November 8, 2020, where he revealed that he doesn’t want to rush into marriage and still look outside.

“Did I show you any wife? You guys are giving me (high) blood pressure. What is in a woman is not yet clear to me. Some tell me, ‘I thought you are married’. To get married is a beautiful thing. However, I don’t want to get married now and still be looking outside. I belong to the wild world and I cannot be caged” he said.

The music star, complained about the make-up worn by ladies, as well as other artificial items, saying it had become alarming.

Speaking on his encounter with a fan, Flavour narrated his encounter with one of his fans. This;
“I once took a picture with a lady and she insisted that I should hold her waist. I was scared that she could be someone’s wife or girlfriend. As I tried to touch her, she said I should hold her very well. I tried holding her waist and my hand touched something very strong like stone. I noticed she wore a waist trainer. There was a space between her buttocks and back. When she was walking away, I noticed the waist trainer… if I was dating the lady and we were about getting intimate, I would have been disappointed at the sight of the waist trainer”

The ‘to be a man’ crooner, disclosed that the events of the past few months, beginning from the pandemic caused by the outrage of coronavirus to the endsars protests across the country has enlightened him and has also helped him to restructure himself.

He said; “This has been a time of sober reflection. I have been vulnerable and I have decided to be true to myself. I have been a victim of circumstance. Most times, they (women) are not what you expect when you meet them in real life. I am focused now. If I visit your (social media) page and see lots of edited pictures, I would move out. The coronavirus and everything else that have happened this year have opened my eyes. The same way youths decided to protest against bad governance was the same way I looked at my life. I am ready now. Do you know what it means for me to be womanless for a whole month? I have been feeding and giving my body the required nutrients, so any woman I come in contact with now must be worth it. I am a very strong man. I cannot be deceived by Instagram.”

Nigerian Army Fixes New Date For SSC, DSSC Qualifying Exam

The Nigerian Army has fixed November 14 for the conduct of its pre-selection examination for prospective recruits seeking enlistment into the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) and the Short Service Combatant commission (SSC),

According to the report, the computer-based suitability test, which was earlier scheduled for October 31, was deferred due to imposition of curfew in many parts of the country, in the wake of the nationwide protests against police brutality.

All concerned army units were directed by the department of military secretary to provide security and support staff at the designated examination centres on the rescheduled date.

The Orient Daily gathered that the allotted exam centres are spread across the Federal Capital Territory, Asaba, Calabar, Enugu, Gombe, Ibadan, Ilorin, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Maiduguri, Makurdi, Port Harcourt, Sokoto and Yola.

The SSC provides opportunity for civilians and serving military personnel with degree certificates to assume the officers rank of the Nigerian Army as ‘Combatant’.

An explainer on the army website notes that successful candidates of the SSC “are commissioned into the rank of Second Lieutenant” after nine months of intensive military training.

The DSSC, on the other hand, also provides an avenue for the enlistment of military and civilian degree holders who are professionals in specified fields.

Successful candidates are commissioned as lieutenant after six months of intensive military training.

Fashola inaugurates Rivers flyover, commends Wike’s urban renewal scheme

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), at the weekend inaugurated 969. 4 metres’ long Rebisi Dual Carriage Flyover Bridge in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Fashola commended “the massive urban regeneration and renewal programme of the Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike.

The Rebisi Flyover Bridge is one of the five overhead bridge projects started simultaneously in the state by governor Wike.

The minister, who toured the bridge in company with Wike, said such development efforts would promote peace, tourism and return Port Harcourt to its Garden City status.

Fashola, who earlier toured the Rumuogba, Okoro-Nu-Odu, Rumuola and GRA Junction flyovers, said: “What I witnessed is a massive urban regeneration and urban renewal of Port Harcourt”.

He said ministers were mandated to support the developmental initiative and aspiration of every state in the country adding that it was the reason the Federal Government took a decision to refund money spent on federal roads by states.

He said the first tranche of refund was about N577bn, while the second tranche, for which, Rivers State was a beneficiary, was N148bn.

He said: “In the second tranche, it was five states. Out of those five states, I think only two were APC states and it was a total of N148bn and Governor Nyesom Wike and Rivers State got lion share. He got N78bn. Don’t sit here and think he has received N78bn, he still has to go to National Assembly because this is part of Nigeria borrowing plan”.

Fashola commended Wike for naming the Rebisi Flyover, located at Garrison Junction, after the community.

“This place use to be known as Garrison. But, clearly as we begin to shed our military toga and our democracy ages and deepen, we will see a rebirth in our unity, our oneness and our shared developmental aspiration” he said.

In his remarks, Wike said when the state government flagged off the Rebisi, Okoro-Nu-Odu and Rumuogba flyovers simultaneously in October 2019, many sceptics questioned the possibility of the completing the projects within the estimated timeframe of 16 months.

He explained that the contractor, Julius Berger, worked assiduously, even during the COVID-19 lockdown, just to ensure that the projects were delivered on time.

“By December, we have to commission Okoro-Nu-Odu flyover. By February, we have to commission Rumuogba and Rumuola; by March-April, we will commission the GRA flyover”, he said.

Wike expressed satisfaction that his administration was able to fulfil the promise of constructing five flyovers with one of them achieved in 12 months.

The governor said the flyover bridge by CFC/Corpus Christi bus stop would be expanded to make it the sixth flyovers project under construction in the state.

The governor, who noted the leadership role played by Fashola in the assessment of the application for refund of money spent on federal projects, appealed that the money spent on the new flyover projects should be considered for a refund.

The governor frown on the refusal of traders to obey government’s directive not to display their wares along the roads said he would sign an executive order to discourage the practice.

He said any landlord, who allowed traders to displays wares for sales in front on their buildings after the order would forfeit them to government because they would be acquired for public use.

Rivers Commissioner for Works , Mr. Eloka Tasie-Amadi said when the Rebisi Flyover Bridge was flagged off on the 24 October 2019 and was to be delivered in 16 months but it was achieved within 12 months.

He said the project improved the aesthetics of the city, enhance traffic flow, relief transport time, eradicate traffic conflict at the junction and reduce vehicular damage that bad roads cause.

Leaders Slowest To Congratulate Biden May Be His Big Worries

While congratulations have flowed in from around the world for Democrat Joe Biden in his victory over Republican President Donald Trump, some world leaders have been conspicuously quiet.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are among the heads of state who still haven’t sent warm wishes to Biden more than a day after he claimed victory and promised a return to a more values-based foreign policy. That silence says as much about the diplomatic challenges facing Biden as it does the unconventional approach of Trump.

Defeat for Trump Would Mean Some Other World Leaders Also Lose Out

Here are some of those who haven’t spoken up so far:

Brazil
The populist leader of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has been referred to as the “Trump of the Tropics” and has previously said he hoped that the U.S. president would get re-elected. At an event on Nov. 7, Bolsonaro made some brief comments on the U.S. and foreign policy, but didn’t comment specifically on Biden’s victory. “We pay attention to foreign policy, we have our preferences, and what happens abroad matters to each one of us here,” he said. “I am not the most important person in Brazil, just as Trump is not the most important person in the world, as he has said himself.”

China
Xi, who issued a statement congratulating Trump the day of his victory speech in 2016, is likely seeking to avoid the wrath of a U.S. leader who is still contesting the outcome. While English-language state media outlets struck a hopeful tone, strategic rivalry between the two nations is expected to continue under Biden. Chinese government advisers expect the Biden administration to push back against China’s growing assertiveness and team up with allies to confront Beijing over the treatment of Uighurs in Xinjiang and its crackdown on Hong Kong. The U.S. is likely to continue pursuing closer ties with Taiwan, considered the most sensitive bilateral issue between the world’s two largest economies. Xi’s silence contrasted with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen, who quickly congratulated Biden with a tweet, reflecting that the “values on which we have built our relationship could not be stronger.”

Mexico
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador told reporters Saturday that he doesn’t want to be “imprudent” about congratulating Biden. “I want to wait until the electoral process is finished,” he said, even as the peso rose with traders betting Biden would be better for Mexican exports. Despite Trump campaigning on building a wall along the Mexico-U.S. border and blaming the government in Mexico City for the flow of Central American migrants toward the U.S. border, Trump has called his relationship with Lopez Obrador, or AMLO, “incredible,” and the two seem to enjoy friendly ties cemented by the Mexican president’s efforts to stop Central American migration and willingness to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. AMLO was one of the few leaders to trek to DC in the middle of the pandemic to meet Trump in person, flying commercial to do so.

North Korea
Few world leaders have benefited from Trump more than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who’s had three summits with the U.S. President since June 2018 that altered the course of the relationship -- from an exchange of insults to a strange friendship characterized by handshakes and warm letters. Yet North Korea, which for decades has presented some of the most difficult security challenges for the occupant of the White House, is likely to remain silent on the results of the U.S. presidential election. A search through its state media from 1996 shows it’s made no mention about the winner of the vote in the days following an election. That doesn’t mean Pyongyang is ignoring what’s going on. The North Korean regime has a history stretching back decades of timing provocations around U.S. elections to grab maximum attention, according to an analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies’s Beyond Parallel.

Russia
No foreign leader loomed quite as large over Trump’s time in office as Putin. Trump was persistently dogged by allegations that his successful 2016 campaign for the presidency benefited from the help of Russian intelligence and a state-sponsored disinformation campaign. Trump’s refusal to condemn Putin drove his domestic critics to fury, even as Russia’s geopolitical ambition ran contrary to U.S. strategy from Ukraine in Eastern Europe to Syria and the Middle East. Now, Russia could face a return to a more confrontational U.S. approach under Biden. Opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who’s in Germany recovering from a near-fatal poisoning attack, spoke out on the U.S. election before Putin, saying elections were “a privilege which is not available to all countries.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that Putin will “wait for the official tabulation of the results” before congratulating the winner, adding that no final outcome had been declared yet.

Turkey
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has benefited enormously from Trump’s unconventional approach to the Middle East, as well as the war in Syria. And so while Turkey on Sunday congratulated the West African nation of Guinea on its election, Erdogan has yet to send his regards to Biden as Trump continues to complain, without evidence, that the election was stolen. Erdogan has so far evaded sanctions for Turkey’s purchase of Russia’s S-400 air defense missile system. He convinced Trump to pull U.S. troops out of Kurdish areas in Northern Syria -- a move that shocked many military observers and allowed Turkey to send its own forces into the zone. “President Erdogan -- He’s tough, but I get along with him,” Trump said in 2019. Biden, who has previously called for the U.S. to support Turkish opposition parties, could end up enforcing sanctions on Erdogan.
