IPOB In Diaspora Begs Israel, UN For Biafra Actualisation.

Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO, living in South Africa, have urged the Israeli government and the United Nations to put pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the persecution of their members in Nigeria.

In a statement sent to SaharaReporters on Saturday, they complained that the Department of State Services (DSS) had arrested people for listening to Radio Biafra, an online radio station created by the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

File Photo: IPOB members

They appealed to both the Israeli and UN government to force Nigeria to drop all charges against Kanu and release all their members in Nigerian prisons.

Part of the statement read: “IPOB South Africa is urging the Israeli Embassy and the United Nations to uphold Its charter on indigenous peoples rights of self-determination and freedom, by compelling President Buhari and the Federal Government of Nigeria not only to release all Biafrans held in secret locations but also to tread with the utmost restraint and caution when dealing with those that are agitating for Biafra.

“We are calling on the Israeli Embassy also to see to the question of savagery, brutality, blatant disregard to the rule of law and undemocratic ruling of Muhammadu Buhari, and to see to it that, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO, will peacefully restore Biafra as a Sovereign State.”

According to the statement signed by the coordinator of IPOB members in South Africa, Ogechukwu Isu, “they – Biafrans are not fearful of the prospect of a second civil war. They are not prepared to settle for crumbs, and neither do they fear death, conflict, defeat, incarceration, butchery or persecution. Biafrans determined to restore Biafra.

“They are imbued with a spirit that cannot be suppressed and the more they cry “Biafra”, the more the spirits of the millions that were slaughtered on the Biafran side during the Biafra/Nigeria war, are invoked. The more they cry “Biafra”, the more the souls of the hundreds of thousands of their people butchered during the barbaric pogroms in the North and Lagos in the mid-60s and after that, are remembered.

“The more they cry “Biafra”, the more they remember how their fathers were stripped of everything after the Biafra/Nigeria war, and how they have been denied the opportunity to rise to the highest office in the land. The more they cry “Biafra”, the more they acknowledge and recognise the bitter fact that the Buhari administration regards their kith and kin as nothing more than third-class citizens and unfortunate prisoners of war. The worst thing that the Nigerian authorities can do is to treat us with levity or contempt.”

In the statement, IPOB members argued that those seeking the actualisation of an independent state of Biafra have the fundamental right to self-determination and should never be maltreated by the Nigerian armed forces.

UNN Non-Academic Staff Join 14-Day Warning Strike.

The Non-Academic Staff Union of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka on Monday joined the 14-day nationwide warning strike declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC).

JAC comprises Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) in public universities.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the congress in Nsukka, the Chairman of UNN-JAC, Mr Paul Eruah, asked workers to remain at home until the end of the strike.

Eruah warned that JAC would sanction any member found sabotaging the strike.
“After this congress you are expected to go home untill the end of the warning strike when you will be informed about the next line of action.
“But bear in mind that, if at the end of the warning strike and Federal Government failed to meet our demands it will result in indefinite strike,” he said.

Eruah said a committee had been set up to monitor and enforce total compliance with the strike and report back to JAC.
He said their action was necessitated by the inconsistency of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) in the payment of salaries of members.

Also, he said the group was protesting the non-payment of earned allowance to members, in spite of various memorandum of understanding between JAC and government.

Other reasons included government’s failure to pay the arrears of the minimum wage and retirement benefits to their retired members. (NAN)

2023: South-East Ready To Go On Their Knees Before Other Zones — Ezeife

Former Gov. Chukwuemeka Ezeife of Anambra has said that the people of South-East geo-political zone will go on their knees to beg other zones, if it becomes the condition to actualise their ambition to produce the next president in 2023.

Ezeife said this on Monday in Awka during the launch of Global Movement for President of Igbo extraction in 2023.
The project, which was initiated by one Kennedy Iyere, is to ensure an Igbo man emerges the next president of Nigeria.

The former governor regretted that southeast remained the only zone to produce a president since the return of democratic rule in Nigeria.
He appealed to other geopolital zones to support the clamour for a president from the southeast in 2023 for fairness, equity and justice.
“We are using this medium to call on people like Alhaji Bola Tinubu and others from the north nursing the presidential ambition to have a rethink,” Ezeife said.

The Chairman of the event, Sen. Ben Obi, urged Igbo people to unite to fight the course, saying that power is not given but struggled for.
Obi listed four hurdles that the people must cross to achieve the desired result.
He said that the political class from the zone must speak with one voice and persuade political parties to allot the presidential slot to the area.
A former Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Josephine Anineh, said that it was imperative for other zones to support the agitation by the southeast to produce the next president.

According to her, any person that is opposed to the zone producing the next president in 2023 does not wish Nigeria well.
The Convener of the summit, Mr Kennedy Iyere, said though he came from Edo, he decided to champion the course for equity and political stability of the nation.

Iyere said that the group would attract national and global interest to achieve the project.
Other prominent Igbo personalities at the event were former Minister of Aviation, Dr Kema Chikwe, and governorship aspirant in 2021 poll in Anambra, Chief Goodwin Ezemo, amongst others. (NAN)

Man Utd Announce €17m Telles Signing On Four-Year Deal

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of full-back Alex Telles on a four-year deal with the option for one in addition.

The 27-year-old underwent a medical at the club’s training ground on Monday after breakthrough in negotiations with Porto on Sunday.

Telles was ready to fly to Brazil for international duty when the two sides came to an agreement on a fee.

United had been in talks with the Portuguese club over the full-back for a number of weeks but were apart on their valuation.

The Red Devils’ initial bid was around €13.2 million (£12m/$15.6m) as the defender was in the final year of his contract but, there was an agreement reached on Sunday and it is understood United have paid €15m with an additional €2m in add ons.

Telles’ arrival is to bring competition to Luke Shaw at left-back and should also bring a different dimension to United’s attack. The 27-year-old scored 13 goals and assisted 12 in 49 appearances across all competitions last season.

Upon joining the Red Devils, Telles said: “To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour.

“You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here. I won many trophies at FC Porto and I want to continue that at United.

“The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can’t wait to pull on the famous shirt.”000:20

United boss Solskjaer added: “First and foremost I welcome Alex to United. He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for.

“He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad. Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United.”

The full-back is the club’s second signing of the summer following Donny van de Beek’s arrival in August, while Edinson Cavani is set to arrive to boost Solskjaer’s attacking line.

No Peace Without Justice – Nanka People Cry Out, Beckon Obiano.

The lingering embroil between two powers – Nanka Patriotic Union and Nanka People’s Assembly in Nanka, Orumba North local government area of Anambra state, may be far from being over following the declaration of peace by the traditional ruler, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo.

Orient Daily recalls that Nanka Patriotic Union (NPU), led by Igwe Ezeilo, recently stated that peace had returned to the community, positing that only few people were still opposed to the peaceful atmosphere.

However, the factional union, Nanka People’s Assembly (NPA), has dissociated itself from the purported statement of peace in the community, and appealed to Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, to urgently attend to the chaotic situation in the community.

According to them, there cannot be peace without justice, and that’s why we cry with louder voice on the sorry situation of our community which centres on peace. Cabalism has been our major problem and these cabals use money to buy their evil ways through; they are simply the bridge to our peace.
In a press statement signed by the President General and General Secretary of Nanka People’s Assembly, Chief Emmanuel Ezeume and Mr. Henry Okeke, the group maintained that peace in the community remains an illusion, remarking that the NPU leadership used what they called, “alien constitution” to administer Nanka.
The group averted that the late former monarch of the community, Igwe Gilbert Ofomata, was yet to be accorded his final rites, and that no one could elect a new monarch until that was done.
Part of the statement reads, “It is no longer hidden the current messy situation in our community which is occasioned by the declaration of peace and we can’t fold our hands and pretend as claimed by those mischievous individuals that there is peace in Nanka community, neither would we watch the entire situation head to a more nasty end.
“Yes, there is no doubt at all that we had enjoyed a relative peace when parties heeded to our president general’s advice, and took their grievances to court where they couldn’t amicably settle their differences.
” Since cases were duly registered and entertained by courts of competent jurisdiction, we have had relative peace in the community but since those cases were being frustrated to the level that the Attorney General had to withdraw a criminal proceeding which had showcased the first witness and which she eventually adjourned sina die.

“We have closely watched the entire situation with dismay, but when we read the same Attorney General, Barr. Uju Nwogu, gave her reason for the withdrawal of the matter as to settle the criminal matter between parties by herself, we became relaxed. Up till this moment, we have neither heard nor seen any move by the Honorable Attorney General and commissioner for justice towards settling the criminal case.

“We are troubled for this particular development. We cannot be advising our people to be civil and a law officer who should know better is at the other end frustrating our efforts. We know the importance of courts, government can not build court for us at same time discourage us from utilizing same.

“Our humble plea is that if the Honourable Attorney General cannot settle the matter as promised; let her return to court so that the town returns to her usual and available peace.

“However, we will make ourselves available and partner with the state government or the Honorable Attorney General in bringing lasting peace to our community if the organisation is consulted, otherwise all cases in courts should please resume without any further interference”.

The group also said Amakor village borne the brunt of what it called the evil machinations of the community leadership, saying that Amakor supposed to produce the traditional prime minister (Onowu) of the community going by the order of seniority.

This, regrettably eluded them as they were bypassed and another village given the slot. The village, therefore, appealed to the Anambra state government to wade into the crisis in the community soonest.
Orient Daily reports that Nanka is made up of seven villages – Agbiligba, Enugwu, Ifite, Amakor, Umudala, Ubalia and Eti, in order of seniority.

However, the leadership of NPA alleged that their opposition group, the Nanka Patriotic Union, truncated the community constitution to recognise only five villages. This, obviously, did not go down well with them leading to their cry for justice.

800,000 Children To Benefit From M-IMOP Health Intervention In C’River

About 800,000 children and 200,000 women in Cross River are targeted in the Modified Integrated Medical Outreach Programme put together by the federal and state governments in conjunction with primary healthcare development agency.

Flagging off the programme in Calabar, Monday, the State Deputy Governor, Prof Ivara Esu, said the State is “out to ensure that no child dies of childhood diseases. Due to this, we are strengthening immunization, providing free health services especially for children and women in line with government’s determination to ensure a healthy population.”
Prof Esu charged healthcare providers who would handle the programme to ensure its holistic implementation.

In her remarks, Hadiza Jubril, national facilitator for M-IMOP implementation, disclosed that over 3 million children remained un-immunized in the country, and hoped the programme would take care of the challenge.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, who also spoke, said the State healthcare delivery team would use the programme to immunize, treat minor illnesses, perform minor surgeries, provide nutritional services on maternal and child care, amongst other services.

On her part, the Director-General of the Cross River state Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Janet Ekpenyong, said the programme became necessary following an assessment conducted in many States which showed some States had not done well in terms of some health indicators.
“This programme will ensure a greater percentage of children under 5 years of age are immunized and that pregnant women can easily access healthcare.

It is an outreach programme. We are taking these services to their doorsteps.
“We have fixed health posts and what we also called mobile health posts, temporary posts like Churches, town halls, markets stalls which will be used for the programme.

“This programme will reach out to those who, probably due to COVID-19, have not been able to access healthcare. Over 800,000 children, particularly under 5 years, and about 200,000 women are targeted to see how we could reduce maternal and infant mortality rate,” she stated.

Ekpenyong explained that the programme would strengthen and enhance primary health care services across the nation particularly as the programme is completely free of charge.
