Tinubu: I Have Never Earned A Dime From Lekki Toll Gate

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, says he will never be part of any carnage.

Tinubu was reacting to Tuesday night attack which saw security forces open fire on #endsars protesters at the Lekki tollgate area of Lagos State.

The former Lagos State governor spoke on Wednesday morning in a telephone interview with Channels Television monitored by The PUNCH.

He condemned the action allegedly perpetrated by the Nigerian Army, saying, “Why will they use live bullets?

“I will never, never be part of any carnage. I will never be part of that.”

Tinubu also denied having any investment in the Lekki Concession Company, the firm which manages the tollgate.

“I have no dime, no kobo investment in the tollgate,” he said.

Continuing, the APC chieftain said, “We are about 13 to 14 days into the protests now. Before now, I was being accused and reported to the Presidency that I was behind the protests, that I was a sponsor of the protests.”

Tinubu said he refuted the allegations and “appealed to the youths” and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to respond to the demands of the protesters.

“That was why he (Sanwo-Olu) set up the Judicial Commission of Inquiry. The governor has gone to the home of one of the victims to appeal to them.

“He has put N200m together as part of restitution and compensation for those attacked.”

Tragedy struck when security operatives, in a bid to disperse #endsars protesters, reportedly opened fire on the teeming youths at the Lekki tollgate around 7pm on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses claimed seven persons, mostly youths, died in the attack while about 30 injured victims are currently receiving treatments at different hospitals in the Lekki area.

Ugwuanyi Inaugurates Judicial Panel On Police Brutality
#endsars:

…
Enjoins residents, youths to remain law abiding, calm as outcome will soothe their pain

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, on Wednesday, inaugurated an 8-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry recently constituted by his administration to receive and investigate complaints of police brutality and/or related extra judicial killings in the state.

It would be recalled that Gov. Ugwuanyi while addressing the protesting youth last Saturday, disclosed that his administration had set up the panel as part of the measures to address the demands of the protesters.

Inaugurating the panel at the Government House, Enugu, the governor disclosed that on the heels of the diffuse national protests, the National Economic Council (NEC) in its meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, directed the immediate establishment of State-based Judicial Panels of Inquiry across the country “to receive and investigate complaints of Police brutality and/or related extra-judicial killings with a view to delivering justice for all victims of the dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other Police Units".

Gov. Ugwuanyi consequently announced Hon. Justice Kingsley Ude (Rtd) as Chairman. He also announced the founding Director of Women's Aid Collective (WACOL), Prof. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo (OON) and the President of International Solidarity for Peace and Human Rights Initiative, Comrade Osmond Ugwu as members representing the Civil Society Organizations.

Other members of the panel include the Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Ikechukwu Odokoro (Rtd); representative of the youth, Charles Ogbu; representative of students, Comrade Stephen Ani, who is the Student Union President, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN); the State Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission, Enugu State office, Dr. Valentine Ekeoma Madubuko and Barr. Onochie Ngwu Obuna, representing the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who serves as secretary of the panel.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who noted that "in the past two weeks, we have been witnesses to the escalating protests against Police brutality and related extra-judicial killings, on the streets of major cities in our country, Nigeria, by our young people", added that "our youths have been consistent and resilient in their demand for justice for all victims of these twin vices as well as far-reaching reforms in the Nigerian Police".

While expressing implicit confidence that the members of the panel have the requisite competence, experience and character to deliver on the crucial mandate, Gov. Ugwuanyi enjoined “all residents in Enugu State to remain law abiding and go about their normal businesses”, urging “our youths to have faith in this process and remain calm as the outcome will certainly soothe our pain".

“Ndi Enugu, we reiterate our faith in the Nigeria project and our commitment to a united and prosperous Nigeria that holds hope, justice, freedom and equal opportunities for every Nigerian, especially the youth, irrespective of religious bent or ethnic distinction”, he added.

The panel's terms of reference, according to the governor, are "to receive and investigate complaints of Police brutality or related extra-judicial killings; evaluate evidence presented/other surrounding circumstances and to draw conclusions as to the validity of the complaints; and recommend compensations and other remedial measures”.

Responding on behalf of members of the panel, the Chairman, Hon. Justice Ude (Rtd), thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for finding them worthy to serve “in this onerous and very important assignment”, assuring him that they will do their best to address the inherent issues to the satisfaction of the public, especially the protesting youth.

Prosecute Soldiers Involved In Lekki Shootings, Reps Tell Buhari

The minority caucus of the House of Representatives has called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to order the arrest and prosecution of soldiers who attacked #endsars protesters at the Lekki Tollgate on Tuesday night.

The Minority Leader, Mr Ndudi Elumelu, in a statement issued on Wednesday, “strongly” condemned killing of “peaceful and unarmed” protesters by security operatives at Lekki Tollgate and other parts of the country.

The protesters were attacked by soldiers, who fired live ammunition at them after the Closed Circuit Television Cameras in the vicinity were reportedly removed and lights were turned off.

In the statement titled, ‘Reps Minority Condemns Killing of Protesters,’ the caucus said, “such wicked act of extrajudicial killing of defenceless citizens by suspected agents of the state cannot be justified or condoned under any rule or guise whatsoever.”

The statement partly read, “As lawmakers and representatives of the people, we cannot accept this gruesome execution of our young ones in their own country by security operatives. Life is sacred and no one has the right to terminate the life of another just because he has the apparatus of state power.

.
Also taking a swipe at those attacking for saying that God told him that Buhari will be President, he stated that he can’t disobey God when he speaks to him. He added that he doesn’t speak out of presumption but from clear visions from God.
