SARS Reform: Presidential Panel Recommends 37 Officers For Dismissal, 24 For Prosecution

The Presidential Panel on Reform of SARS has recommended 37 police officers for dismissal and 24 for prosecution following 113 complaints on alleged human rights violations from across the country received by the Panel.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Police Service Commission’s (PSC) Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, and made available to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

The statement said that the Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, Tony Ojukwu, solicited the support of the PSC in the implementation of the aspects of the Report covered by PSC constitutional mandate.

According to the statement, Ojukwu made the solicitation while formally presenting the 2018 Report of the Presidential Panel to the PSC.

“The Presidential Panel had among other things investigated allegations of human rights violations and abuse of office against SARS and recommended reform or restructuring of the outfit,” the statement quoted Ojukwu as saying.

In the statement, Ojukwu said that PSC had all it takes to deal appropriately with the Report of the Presidential Panel on Reform of Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

“We have come to see a PSC determined to play a leading role in the reform of the Nigeria Police Force,” Ojukwu said.

He said that the Panel also directed the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, to unravel the identity of 22 officers involved in the violation of the human rights of innocent citizens.

The statement also quoted PSC Chairman, retired Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith, as saying that the PSC will collaborate and support the Human Rights Commission in the promotion of good governance.

He, however, said that for an effective reform of SARS, there must be a deliberate effort to select capable, professional and credible people to replace the disbanded outfit.

“There must also be training and close supervision of the newly-selected officers so that the nation will not experience the rot that became the fate of the disbanded unit. Any misconduct, he noted, should be severely and promptly handled,” Smith said.

The former police boss said that the government should show more concern to the funding of its vital Agencies as these Agencies need funds to do their job.

The statement said Smith has urged the government to provide a standard and proper living accommodation for the officers of the Nigeria Police Force for the officers to put in their best. (NAN)

Northern Governors Meet President Buhari, Reject Disbandment Of SARS

Governors of states in the Northern part of Nigeria have rejected the total disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong, disclosed this to journalists after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday.

Lalong said the defunct police unit had been useful in the fight against insecurity in the region.

According to him, SARS was not made up of bad elements alone as it also included personnel doing their work diligently.

He said what was needed was the reformation of the unit to enable it to discharge its functions optimally.

Lalong, however, acknowledged that there were divisions in the country concerning the continued existence of the unit. (SaharaReporters)

Soldiers Kill Five Protesting Secondary School Students In Taraba

At least five students of Holy Ghost Secondary School, Pave Chanchji, in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State have been killed by a special force of the Nigerian Army stationed in the community.

SaharaReporters gathered that one Mr Matthew, a teacher in the school, got married to one of his students named Ngufa Kavga without her father’s consent.

It was learnt that Ngufa’s father reported the matter to the police, who then arrested Matthew alongside some civil defence operatives.

A resident of the community told SaharaReporters that some students of the school mobilised themselves and protested the arrest of their teacher.

The students were said to have called for the release of Matthew so that both families involved could settle the matter amicably.

“Some of the students protested against the arrest of their teacher and demanded that he should be released. But the special force stationed at the village, on seeing the protesting students, immediately invited their colleagues stationed at Kofai Amadu and the combined team of special forces opened fire on the protesting students, killing some.

“Some of them also ran into a nearby river and drowned in the process. Over five corpses have been discovered while many are still missing,” a source told SaharaReporters. (SaharaReporters)

*DOMINION MANDATE DAILY DEVOTIONAL*

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2020

*IF SOMEONE HAS DONE IT, YOU CAN*

*BIBLE READING: ECCLESIASTES 11*

*He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over. 2Kings 2:13-14(NKJV).*

In our devotional this week, we have highlighted the principles that determine fruitfulness and productivity. Success is not a mystery because it has pathways and is duplicable when the preconditions and principles are diligently applied. Put differently, once someone has done it, it is no longer a mystery because the reproduction of the tenets will replicate the same results.

You can achieve whatever success anyone you admire has achieved by moving from imitation to originality; study that person or team and see what principles they are applying, and then do likewise because principles are no respecter of persons, and what works for one works for all.

Once you can lay your hands on the processes that produce any result, you can duplicate that success. Adherence to result-oriented processes always produce results. Go for the processes and you will get the desired results. Once you can replicate up to 90% of whatever those you look up to have achieved, you can then fill up what is left with your own creativity, and you can end up with better results than they did. This principle can be applied in whatever sphere or endeavour you choose to undertake in life.

Elisha honoured, followed, served and understudied his master Elijah faithfully without looking for any shortcut or having any selfish interest. The application of these principles made it possible for Elisha to receive a double portion of Elijah’s anointing when Elijah was to be taken away from the earth. As evidence of the anointing he received, when Elisha got to bank of the river Jordan, he replicated the same feat his master did and the river divided miraculously again.

Is there something big on your mind or a project you intend to execute? The record confirms that if someone has done it, you can do it even better because you have the advantage of learning from the mistakes of others and even beat the existing record or achievements.

*CONFESSION
I shall not be a hearer only; henceforth, I shall begin to do. I will follow, learn and practice then in the fullness of time I shall manifest in Jesus’ name!
