#endsars: Kanu Hails Nigerian Youths, As Protesters Ground S’East, S’South.

Tens of thousands of protesters joined the nationwide #endsars protest across major cities in the South East and South-South geopolitical zones of the country on Tuesday. Although the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, had, on Sunday, disclosed that the (FSARS) and SARS had been dissolved, Nigerians youths had intensified their demands for holistic reform of the country’s police system.

President Muhammadu Buhari had also assured of his administration’s commitment towards extensive police reforms. “The disbandment of SARS is only the first step in our commitment to extensive police reforms, in order to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies remains the protection of lives and livelihood of our people,” he said.

The protesters, Orient Daily gathered, grounded major parts of Enugu, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Owerri, Umuahia, Aba and other major cities in the zones, demanding for end to police brutality and total overhaul of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, and the entire Nigerian police force.

In a related development, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPO Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday, declared his support for the nationwide protest over police brutality. In a statement posted through his social media handle, Kanu declared that “#endsars campaign is heading in the right direction.” The exiled leader of the pro-Biafra group, however, warned that certain steps must be taken for the protest to yield desired results. According to him, the protest organisers must resist every attempt to buy them over and remain steadfast with the struggle; as well as sustain the tempo of the street protest.

In Enugu, placard-wielding youths grounded major parts of the state in protest. They marched through major streets of the coal city chanting: “End SARS now,” “Reform the Nigeria Police Force,” “Fine Boy no be Criminal,” among others.

The protesters took off from Michael Okpara Square, and headed to the state police command; where they were received by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad Abdurrahman.

Award winning musician, Chinedu Izuchukwu Okoli, aka Flavour, and many other celebrities, including Nollywood actors, joined the protest, demanding an end to the operations and activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS. Among those in the protest were Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, aka Phyno, another Igbo rapper, Zoro, and Nollywood actor, Ken Erics.

From the Enugu police command, the determined youths marched to the Enugu state government house gate. They later marched to the Enugu state House of Assembly, where they were received by the Speaker, Hon. Edward Ubosi.

Speaking on behalf of the youths, popular Nollywood Actor, Ken Erics, said the youths were demanding an end to brutality by men in uniform. He said it was not a crime for Nigerians to appear in good outfit; adding that all forms of molestation must stop.

Ubosi, while responding, said the House was totally against acts of brutality against citizens. He commended the youths for the peaceful manner they had conducted themselves during the protest.

While noting that the matter was subject of discussion during plenary, he said: “We are with you on this; we don’t want SARS any longer. We are looking forward to a totally reformed police that will be lawful in its handling of citizens.”

Enugu state police command had earlier urged residents not to hold EndSARS protests. In a statement issued through the police public relations officer, ASP Daniel E. Ndukwe, the command warned: “Any person or group of persons perfecting plans to cause breach of the peace under whatsoever guise, should desist forthwith.

“The commissioner notes that the warning is sequel to credible information gathered that miscreants are perfecting plans to hijack the proposed ‘End SARS’ protest and wreak havoc in the state. He reiterates that such acts aimed at scuttling the hitherto peace and tranquility enjoyed in the state will be vehemently resisted; while warning that anyone found wanting will be made to face the full weight of the law.”

Scores of protesters also marched through the streets of Aba, the commercial city of Abia state on Tuesday. Led by Roff Coin Nwaba, and other local musicians, the protesters took off from Azikiwe Road to East Street to Ogbor Hill area, through Ikot Ekpene Road and ended the protest at NTA, Aba, which is along Ikot Ekpene Road.

Similarly, hundreds of youths, Tuesday morning, defied the order of the Rivers state government to stage the protest against police brutality in Port Harcourt. A coalition of civil society organizations, under the auspices of RIVSCO, had last week, mobilised in preparation of the #endsars protest in Rivers state, with a planned March through some streets in the heart of capital, Port Harcourt, terminating at the government house.

This paper recalled that following the disbandment of the security outfit by the inspector general of police, on Monday, the Rivers state government announced that no protest was permitted in Port Harcourt. The government announcement, which was signed by the state commissioner for information and communications, Paulinus Nsirim, which argued that “There is no need for any form of protest against a unit of the police force that no longer exists.”

In defiance to the order, protesters came out in their numbers charging through the streets, demanding end to police brutality and oppression of the civilian population, especially the youths, by the police. Among the protesters were some Rivers based entertainment icons and social media enthusiasts, who also called for justice for citizens killed by policemen in the state.

The continuing protest had seen the demonstrators matching on the ever busy Aba Road to the gates of the Government House, Port Harcourt, where they were demanding audience with the governor, as they were also expected to match to the Moscow Road, Rivers Command Headquarters of the Nigerian Police, to drive home their demands.

Over 1000 protesters, including celebrities, took over major streets of Calabar, Cross River state capital, to protest all forms of police brutality, unprofessional conducts by some units of the police force on Tuesday.

The protest, which started at about 100 am, this paper learnt, caused gridlock in many major roads in the metropolis, including the Mary Slessor by Watt Market, Marian Road, IBB Way, Murtala Mohammed Highway, and others.

The protesters were brandishing placards of various inscriptions including: “Stop Police Brutality,” “Increase police salaries to end extortion,” “You messed with the wrong generation,” “Reform the police immediately,” “We are humans, not lab rats,” “End SARS, not disband SARS,” amongst others. They later headed to the governor’s office, and also the headquarters of the state police command, where they were addressed by the deputy commissioner of police, Operations, Samuel Musa.

Musa said that all was now under control following the directive of the IGP, while pleading with the protesters to proceed peacefully and avoid breaching public peace, as it would also be an infringement on the rights of other citizens.

The protest was joined by popular Calabar celebrities, artistes, comedians, actors, and activists, who also expressed dissatisfaction over the unprofessional conduct of some police officers.

Earlier, youths numbering about hundred, marched through the streets of Umuahia, the Abia state capital, in defiance to warnings against such protest issued last week by the authorities of the Abia state police command.

The youths, who carried different placards with several messages such as “#end SARS,” “We are hunted and brutalised,” “#end Police/SARS brutality,” among others, later took their march to the Abia state House of Assembly, where they demanded to speak with their representatives.

The youths were later addressed by the Speaker of the State House, Chinedum Orji, who was accompanied by other lawmakers. The youths, who took turns to speak, said they decided to join other Nigerians in a peaceful way to protest police brutality and harassment of innocent and legitimate Abians and Nigerians.

Recounting their ordeals in the hands of SARS operatives and other security agencies, they said they had become endangered species in the hands of people, who are being paid with their tax.

Orji appreciated the protesters for being peaceful and urged them to give the police authorities more time to conclusively resolve the issue.

CSOs, PDP Call For Withdrawal Of Onochie As INEC National Commissioner Nominee.

No fewer than 14 Civil Society Organisations have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately withdraw the nomination of his aide Lauretta Onochie as a Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The group in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday said that the nomination did not sit well in the recent gains of the electoral system in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Onochie’s nomination was announced on Tuesday in a letter to the Senate by President Muhummadu Buhari.

The leaders of the civil societies, who signed the statement include Executive Director Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) and Ms Faith Nwadishi, Executive Director of Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre.

Others are the Convener of Say No Campaign, Mr Ezenwa Nwagwu, and the Executive Director Centre for Democracy, Ms Idayat Hassan, among others.

The statement reads: “Whereas it has come to our notice the nomination of Lauretta Onochie by President Muhammadu Buhari as a National Commissioner of INEC, via a letter sent to the Senate leadership for screening and confirmation on Oct. 13.

“We completely reject this nomination, which does not sit well in the recent gains of the electoral system in the country.

“We, therefore, call on the President to withdraw this nomination with immediate effect and in the alternative call on the Senate to act as gatekeepers by not confirming this appointment.

“As civil society actors and veterans in election observation in the country, having contributed to the electoral gains in Nigeria, we condemn this nomination and affirm that this will erode the gains we have made in our electoral reforms.”

“We are, therefore, troubled that Lauretta Onochie, a serving aide of the President who openly supports the President and his political party, has been nominated to the position of National Commissioner, INEC.

“Any INEC National commissioner should enjoy the trust and confidence of all parties concerned (Ruling and Opposition).

“Ms. Onochie failed this critical test with her several open confrontations with opposition elements through the media. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also called on Buhari to immediately withdraw the nomination of his Special Assistant on Social Media, as a national commissioner in INEC. According to the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan in a news conference Onochie is a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ologbondiyan said that the nomination was against the nation’s constitution, democratic process and President’s public promises of leaving a legacy of credible elections. The party claimed that Onochie is a card-carrying member of the APC from Ward 5 Onicha Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta. It remarked that Onochie’s nomination is in clear violation of paragraph 14 of the 3rd schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“This section forbids a person involved in partisan politics to hold office as a member of INEC,” it said.Such actions according to the party will undermine the nation’s constitution and desecrate the sanctity of Nigeria’s electoral process.(NAN)

JAMB Shuts Down 7 Exam Centres In Bayelsa

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAM, has shut down seven examination centres in Bayelsa over alleged violation of rules and regulations guiding the examinations.

JAMB coordinator in the state, Abdusalam Mohammed, announced the development on Tuesday in Yenagoa when he paid a courtesy call on the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state is now left with only four centres to cater for its 24,000 candidates.

Mohammed explained that some of the centres were de-listed for duplicating the Virtual Private Network (VPN) of their router, a development that compromised the data security of JAMB.

He said that others were shut down for charging outrageous sums during registration.

“When the registration exercise commenced, we sent out a monitoring team who found that candidates were charged N5,000 for a service that should ordinarily cost N2,500,” Mohammed said.

On JAMB’s readiness to conduct examination in the COVID-19 era, Mohammed said that the body was training its staff during the lockdown.

“We also sensitised candidates and provided personal prevention equipment.

“In order to reduce the crowd at our office during registration, we set out specific days that candidates could visit us. The intention was to reduce body contact between staff and candidates.

“Before the outbreak of COVID-19, we used to ask candidates to thumb-print documents, but that has been stopped so as to curtail the spread of the virus.

“We have replaced that with a One-Time Password (OTP), which is sent to the candidate. The OTP will verify the candidate and confirm if he or she is the original owner of that particular application.

“In the past, it was difficult to have 20,000 candidates for JAMB, but this year, the number has skyrocketed to 24,000 candidates, meaning that there is an improvement in the enrollment of students in Bayelsa.

“Unfortunately, awareness of our activities is low in Bayelsa. That is why we have come to visit you,” Mohammed explained.

Responding, the Chairman of NUJ, Mr Samuel Numonengi, frowned at the activities of the operators of the examination centres de-listed, saying that their actions were detrimental to progress in the state.

“We cannot stand people jeopardising the future of our children in Bayelsa.

“I want to join you to condemn their actions and encourage parents and candidates to stand up against any form of infraction perpetrated by these individuals that have questionable character.

“In the past, JAMB had a strong synergy with journalists, but that relationship is weak now. So, I want to encourage you to build that synergy so as to educate our people and shore up our fortunes,” he said. (NAN)

*GOD RESPONDS TO OBEDIENCE*

*BIBLE READING: LUKE 5:1-9*

*If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land - Isaiah 1:19 (NKJV)*

When God gives instructions He expects us to obey. His power and blessings are always released in response to our acts of obedience. The widow at Zarephat would not have experienced multiplication and divine replenishment and would have died if she did not obey the prophetic instruction to make the cake first, for the prophet.

God meets us at the point of action. If the disciples had insisted on seeing the water turn to wine before drawing it out to the master of the ceremony, that testimony would never have been recorded. As a healing minister I have seen people get out of the wheelchair by simply obeying instructions given by the Holy Spirit and not waiting for a surge of power or the anointing. It is those who are obedient who will eat of the good of the land not those who just believe. If Moses never stretched forth the rod, the Red Sea would not have parted. Don't joke with the instructions God gives you. They carry divine energy which are released as you obey.

Remember that Peter was already cleaning his nets, a good reason to say tomorrow is another day, nevertheless he said: "At thy word..." He let down the net and the next thing he saw was a boat sinking and net breaking harvest.

Have you delayed in obeying God, you have simply held back His manifestation in your life. Choose to obey Him henceforth and you will be opened up to constant supernatural manifestation. God does not advance you any new instruction beyond your last point of obedience.

*ACTION POINT/PRAYER
Ask God to forgive you for every time you have failed or disobeyed in carrying out His instruction. Ask Him for the grace, boldness and courage to always act on His word.

EndSARS Protesters Shut Down Iwo Road, Causing Gridlock

Protesters against police brutality, extra-judicial killing, and extortion have blocked Iwo road in Ibadan on Tuesday morning, causing gridlock.

The PUNCH gathered that the protesters arrived at the road a few minutes to 09 am.

According to a commuter, many travellers are stranded and held in traffic.

One of the protesters, identified simply as Akande, said, “It is our right to protest. We apologise to those affected by the gridlock, but we expect that they should be part of us. They are also exploited by policemen while travelling.”

Nigerians on Tuesday continued their protests to pressure the Federal Government to follow through on disbanding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

The Inspector General of Police, Adamu Muhammed, had on Sunday announced the dissolution of the FSARS in after widespread protest.

The protesters blocked highways in Lagos on Monday, demanding that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), addresses them.

Buhari on Monday insisted that “disbanding of SARS is only the first step in our commitment to extensive police reforms”.

“The purpose of law enforcement and the purpose of policing is for the safety of lives and livelihood of Nigerians,” he said.

But protesters vowed to keep up the pressure, saying previous pledges to disband the unit and punish officers responsible for abuses were not honoured.
