FG, ASUU Resume Negotiations Today

By Onyebuchi Ezigbo

The federal government negotiating team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, will meet with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) today in a bid to end the over six months strike by the university lecturers.

A statement signed issued yesterday by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, Mr. Charles Akpan said “Ngige will be hosting a meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday, October 15, 2020”.

ASUU had called out its members on an indefinite industrial action following their opposition to federal government’s move to enforce the use of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), salary payment platform.

Efforts to convene negotiations so as to resolve the dispute failed due partly to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, hope that the strike action would soon be resolved emerged on Tuesday when ASUU was summoned to a meeting by the Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan along with Ngige.

The meeting, chaired by Lawan, also had in attendance, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris and the ASUU leadership led by the President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi.

Addressing journalists after about the three-hour closed session, Ngige had said, “ASUU has demonstrated to us, how the UTAS they developed could work but the demonstration will continue.

“We will involve other government agencies who would also come and assess it. Discussions on it are not foreclosed yet.

“UTAS is a homegrown software. It is what we call local content that Mr President is encouraging. It will be considered by the government,” Ngige added.

ASUU had rejected the IPPIS as it embarked on an indefinite strike on February.

The Senate President, Lawan, told the meeting that the current impasse between ASUU and the federal government was an ill-wind that would not do any of the two parties any good.

The Senate President asked the two parties to find a middle ground to resolve their differences.

*WHY PEOPLE DON’T ACT*

*BIBLE READING: JAMES 2:14-17*

*He who observes the wind will not sow, And he who regards the clouds will not reap. As you do not know what is the way of the wind, or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child. So you do not know the works of God who makes everything. In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand; for you do not know which will prosper, either this or that, or whether both alike will be good. Ecclesiastes 11:4-6 (NKJV)*

Often times huge projects and visions do not transit from concept to reality due to inaction. A lot of people do not take action towards the actualisation of their dreams and visions for several unjustifiable reasons. Great destinies and projects have been aborted or stagnated by inaction, complacency, and the expectation of a perfect condition or timing that may never materialise.

Some people wait until all the conditions are right and resources fully supplied before taking the first step. If you are in this category, you will never achieve anything or make a mark in life because wisdom requires that you start from where you are and make use of what is in your hand as God directed Moses in the wilderness (Exodus 4:2). Multi-million Naira businesses have started from people’s homes, cars, mobile phones, social media platforms etc., while some others with such dreams are still waiting for money or grants to rent a shop or a mega outlet at the heart of the city.

Another reason why people do not act is due to self-indulgence. God made man and gave him charge to tend the garden, and also promised to bless the work of his hands by making him fruitful without any room for laziness. Self-indulgence often reflects in one giving more attention to the desires of the flesh for comfort at the expense of being fruitful – “As a door turns on its hinges, so does the lazy man on his bed. The lazy man buries his hand in the bowl; it wearies him to bring it back to his mouth. The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can answer sensibly.” Proverbs 26:14-16(NKJV).

Laziness has crippled a lot of people with potentials and denied the nation of huge economic possibilities. Every moment has strategic importance as opined by Mark Gerson about the Israelis in the book, "Start-Up Nation: The story of Israel’s Economic Miracle," by Dan Senor and Saul Singer. He also stated that, “When an Israeli man wants to date a woman, he asks her out that night. When an Israeli entrepreneur has a business idea, he will start it that week. The notion that one should accumulate credentials before launching a venture simply does not exist. This is actually good in business. Too much time can only teach you what can go wrong, not what could be transformative.” This excerpt is corroborated by the scripture in Proverbs 24:33-34 that a little sleep, and a little slumber will result in poverty becoming the order of the day.

Great dreams without taking corresponding actions will make a man poor no matter the size of his dreams. Determine to jettison laziness, self-indulgence and embrace diligence in all your endeavours by starting that early morning exercise, beginning that healthy dieting, regulating the time you spend with your television, phone or other similar negative habits and your life will be better and more productive.

*ACTION POINT
Write down the things that you indulge in that have been crippling your productivity and cancel them in the place of prayer, take decisive action, set timelines, get an accountability partner to help you in changing the habit or starting that enterprise that has been pending.

Nigeria May Shut Down Internet As #endsars Protests Continue - The Guardian

With Nigerians not backing down on protests for the reform of the police force and total disbandment of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad(SARS), there are speculations that the government might shut down the internet.

Six days ago, a video of a fatal police shooting of a Nigerian man, sparked outrage and reignited a public call for the total dissolution of the controversial police unit in the country.

The video caused large numbers of Nigerians including celebrities, politicians, and activists calling for justice using hashtags such as #waronsars, #endsars, and #sarsalert #sarsmustend.

With celebrities adding their voice to the #endsars campaign, it jumped to the top of global trend on Twitter and drew international support from celebrities and soccer stars like Kanye West, Trey Songs, Mesut Ozil and Marcus Rashford.

Nigeria’s superstars, Wizkid and Falz who are also part of this generation of protesters, have been physically present in London and Abuja protests.

The protests against the police have largely been organized on social media, fuelled by citizens sharing their experiences of police abuses and videos of brutal incidents, including the beating of civilians and the firing of live ammunition at protesters.

The campaign moved from social media to the streets of Nigeria, with protesters demanding an end to the rogue police unit and a wholesome police reform.

However, the protesters are not relenting despite the dissolution of the notorious police squad but have continued to protest noting the government’s ineffectual promises of police reforms and investigations in the past.

The campaigners have also been able to organise funds to cater to their welfares during protest using digital payment platforms.

But there are now speculations that the Nigerian government may to shut the protesters up by shutting down the internet since surreptitious move to divide the protesters have failed.

Active protesters on and off social media have said unknown numbers have been calling to threaten them to back off.

Moreover, Feminist Coalition, a pro-#endsars women group, said its bank account has been deactivated.

“For demanding an end to police brutality we are now under attack,” the group said on Twitter on Tuesday.

Nigerians are however speculating that the government in order to mute the campaign may clampdown on social media like its counterparts in other African countries have done in the past.

For instance, Chad shut down the internet in early 2018 despite the international media campaigns against the deliberate clamp down on free speech in the landlocked African country.

“Chad is among the worst states in the world regarding respect of digital rights,” Internet Without Borders said in December 2018.

But Chad is not the only African country where the government’s censorship of digital rights was used to stifle freedom of speech.

Between 2016 and 2018, the authorities in South Sudan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Somalia also shut down the internet in their respective countries.

While Zimbabwe, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have forced internet shutdown in 2019, Tanzania, Uganda, and a host of North African countries have stringent subsisting rules for the use of social media and digital publishing.

Nigeria almost moved in that direction in 2019 as law that sought to punish individuals behind certain social media posts which was proposed to the Nigerian Senate in 2017 passed first reading.

Massive media backlash prevented lawmakers from passing the bill into law.

Campaigners also argued that the #endsars was missing on trend table on Twitter despite thousands of people tweeting the hashtag.

Some of them said the government may have tampered with the hashtag. That belief led to the birth of #sarsmustend.

Paradigm Initiatives media and program manager Adegoke Adeboye said it is not “impossible” for the Nigerian Government to shut down the internet but hoped it will not get to that point.

“The government’s response to the protest has been double-faced, “ Adegoke said.

“While saying all the nice things openly, it is secretly attacking private businesses that has lent their platforms to support the protest.”

He said the clampdown on Flutterwave might be the first step to mute the active participation of citizens in the protest.

“We all know the role that the Internet is playing in the protest and we can already imagine that someone has proposed this to the government,” Adegoke said.

Adegoke further stated that it is better Nigerians are prepared than to be caught unawares.

“In April last year, PIN developed some guidelines to help citizens stay online should the government shut down the internet.”

“The guides are still relevant and we are also working with some of our partners to specifically help Nigerians stay online should the government shut down the internet. The digital rights community are therefore envisaging this already.”
