The Edo state police commissioner, Babatunde Kokumo, has debunked the allegation that the police killed two of the “End SARS” protesters in Ekpoma, Esan Central local government area over the weekend.

A video had gone viral alleging the shooting to death of two young men protesting in the university community.

Nwabuzor said 19 of the suspected hoodlums were arrested preparatory to their prosecution.

He said the viral video and rumour of killing or attacking protesters in the state were “staged, baseless, unfounded, and the handiwork of mischief makers to heat up the state.”

Ohanaeze Youths Join #endsars Protest, Demand Detainees’ Release

Scores of youths on Monday blocked the gate of the Onitsha Area Command of the Nigerian Police Force in Anambra state, in continuation of their protest against the operations of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the reform of the Nigeria police force.

The protesters, among whom were citizens and residents of the commercial city, moved from the DMGS Roundabout to the Central Police Station, Onitsha, calling for reforms in the police and end to police brutality.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Music Artistes and Disc Jockeys (DJs) and many other groups also joined the protesters who demanded freedom for their colleagues said to be wrongfully arrested and detained at the SARS offices at Awkuzu, Neni, Enugwu Ukwu, among others.

Speaking during the march, a protester, Chibuike Emmanuel, said it was in solidarity with similar protests going on across the country, to register the people’s displeasure over the spate of police brutality, illegal arrest and detention and extrajudicial killings which they experienced in the hands of some police operatives.

“What Nigerians go through in the hands of the police is unbearable. The people are now more scared of the policemen than the criminals. The very men paid to protect the people’s lives are the very ones snuffling life out of the people. It is quite unfortunate and Nigerians are saying ‘no’ to all these,” he noted.

A popular comedian, Lord Zeus, who related his experience in a police cell a week ago, said it was pity how people were detained for no just cause in those cells.

“Some of these youths are actually innocent. Some of the people I met were those arrested in connection with the protest of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO, over six months ago. For many of them, their families don’t know anything about their whereabouts anymore, neither do they have any hope of coming out alive. The police authorities are, by this protest, urged to intensify efforts at ensuring that these innocent youths are released unconditionally,” he pleaded.

Leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing, Anambra state chapter, Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezukwu, said they joined the march in order to ensure that it was not hijacked by hoodlums.

He revealed that Ohanaeze had resolved to form a committee to look into all the positions and grievances of the youths to ensure that impact is maximised and purpose served.

Addressing the protesters, deputy commissioner of police in charge of CPS, Onitsha, DCP Chollom Gyang, commended the youths for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves, saying that the protest reflected the beauty of democracy.

“The beauty of democracy is the ability of the people to express their feelings in a lawful manner without harassment. It is heart-warming that the inspector general of police, IGP Adamu Mohammed, has heard the cries of Nigerians and that was why SARS was disbanded.

“He has promised not just to end SARS, but also that the police force will be reformed. Our appeal to you and other Nigerians is to be patient as the ongoing reforms will yield the kind of police force our people have yearned for all these years,” he said.

On the persons detained in various SARS facilities across the state, Gyand said the state command had set up a special police team to visit the facilities during which those bailable will be bailed while the others will be charged to court.

In his words, “the reason we have a large number of suspects in the cells was due to the COVID-19 pandemic which made it difficult for courts to sit. Now that the courts have reopened, we hope to speed up the legal processes to ensure that we decongest the cells.”

Lawan Wades Into ASUU-FG IPPIS Dispute.

Senate president, Ahmed Lawan, on Monday waded into the dispute between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government over the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and other outstanding issues.

Lawan met with a delegation from ASUU led by its president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, at the National Assembly to discuss the lingering crisis which has made it difficult for some universities to reopen after the COVID-19 lockdown.

“We really don’t need this kind of situation where our universities are shut. Our children are the victims of this. Therefore, the government and ASUU ought to find a common ground for our institutions, particularly our universities to open and of course, offer the kind of services that are expected of our universities.

“We cannot afford, as a country, to continue to have this kind of crisis. So, I receive you on behalf of my colleagues at the Senate and, indeed, the National Assembly. The idea is to find out how we can resolve this issue.”

The senate president said although there were still many outstanding issues, the parties should imbibe the spirit of give-and-take in resolving the dispute. “Government cannot expect to have it all its way and I believe that ASUU shouldn’t expect it to be that everything it asked for must be given.

“Our situation today is very stressful and I believe that government is supposed to, even within this kind of situation, play its own part. Its obligations must be redeemed within the confines of what we can do.

“But ASUU too, I know, is prepared to meet government halfway somehow because I’m sure we have joint determination to resolve these issues. The National Assembly is the best place to go. On one hand, we are in government, on another hand, we represent the people. We represent you. We represent the families and the children who are at home because the universities are shut.

“And I think, as parliamentarians, we have to tell the truth as it is, no matter how bitter it may be. When we sign agreements, we must do so with full intention of implementing it. And when we negotiate, we must negotiate in such a manner that the final product is implementable.

Ogunyemi said the visit was in furtherance of previous interactions with the senate president. “We are here to solicit your support on the need for the government to urgently address the outstanding issues on our demand list. We hope we will have the supportive weight that we expect from your office,” Ogunyemi said.

Senate Tasks Federal Character Commission On Equal Employment.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan has charged the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to ensure equitable distribution of employment opportunities among all the states of the federation.

Lawan gave the charge when the executive chairman of the Commission, Dr Muheebbat Dankaka led other members on a courtesy visit to his office on Monday. “The FCC is designed purposely to provide stability in the country. No part of the country should be neglected; no part of this country should feel short-changed; this is the essence of the Commission,” Lawan said, adding that the Commission should not allow any further recruitment from that state that took undue advantage in the recruitment process, until other states are properly taken care of.

“Don’t mind what people from that state will say; so long there are too many people from one part of the country in an organisation, make sure other parts of the country get their share too and stop further recruitment from that state.

“We have witnessed that kind of situation where a chief executive officer of an agency will simply take advantage of his office and pass through your system and get all his people into the organisation to the neglect of other parts of the country.

“Your organisation is important because you give people a sense of belonging even though it is in our character to complain of marginalisation even where there is none. But figures do not lie. Figures are there to show what every state has in every organisation.

“Where you think it is hot for you to handle come to National Assembly, we will help and support you on that because this country belongs to all of us irrespective of where one comes from. Therefore, there must be fairness, justice and equity in the way and manner offices are shared and opportunities given.”

Lawan assured members of the Commission in their quest for an increase in funding, and called on the Commission to always work closely with the Senate committee on Federal Character in all its activities and decision-making process. He also called on the Commission to hasten the presentation of its proposed amendment to the Act establishing it for expeditious consideration by the National Assembly.

Dankaka, in her remarks, said the commission “is working on some grey areas of our Act, to make it more potent and in line with the dynamics of time.” She commended the harmonious relationship between the executive and legislature, which she said facilitated their speedy screening and confirmation by the senate.
