EndSARS: Makinde Deploys Operation Burst Team To Troubled Spots In Ibadan
Following the violence that trailed the ENDSARS protest in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, Governor of the state, Mr. Seyi Makinde, has deployed members of the Operation Burst to various hotspots in the metropolis, to arrest the situation and restore normalcy.
The governor, in a broadcast on Tuesday, hinted that members of the team will continue to protect genuine protesters and their right to protest, pointing out that the state would not allow persons with ulterior motives to hijack the protests.
He said: “I have always said that peaceful protests are an important part of our democratic process, and no one should be harassed or brutalised for protesting. For this reason, we deployed members of Operation Burst to protect protesters. And we are happy to report that there have been no cases of disruptions of protest grounds in Oyo State since they started work.”
“However, the past two days have seen a new dimension to the ongoing protests. Thugs and hoodlums have taken advantage of the situation to perpetrate uncivil acts and harass citizens who are going about their day-to-day activities.”
“Some thugs are going as far as forcing people who have businesses open to close shop and join in the protests. We know these are criminal elements. And so, as a state, we must act to protect the citizenry

We Were Given N500 To Attack Protesters - Jos Hoodlum Confesses.
There is pandemonium in Jos, the Plateau State capital today as some thugs parading as #ENDSARS protesters began the destruction of goods and services at Ahmadu Bello Way and Terminus Market.
In one of the videos, one of the thugs, who spoke in a thick Hausa accent, confessed that they were paid N500 to attack people.
Policemen were also spotted looking without any action as the thugs threw stones at People.
It should be noted that the #ENDSARS protesters in the state had always carried out their protest peacefully from the Old Airport Junction for the last 10 days and there was no plan of any protest at Terminus Market.

EndSARS Protests Threaten October 31 Bye-Elections.
With the ongoing #EndSARS protests across the country, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), may be forced to postpone the bye-elections scheduled for October 31.
The protests, which have degenerated into violence, have created a lot of tension in most parts of the country.
The scheduled polls were expected to take place in Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Nganzai State Constituency, Borno State, Bayo State Constituency, Borno State, Cross River North Senatorial District, and Obudu State Constituency, Cross River State.
Others are: Imo North Senatorial District, Lagos East Senatorial District, Kosofe II State Constituency, Lagos State, Plateau South Senatorial District, Bakura State Constituency, Zamfara State, and Ibaji State Constituency, Kogi State.
A source in the Commission told our correspondent that INEC had no option than to postpone the election “given the disruption caused by the protests, especially to the Nigerian Police, which is an integral part of the electoral process”.
He said the election may be postponed by a minimum of two weeks “or as long as the protests last”.
Also, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), on Tuesday, urged INEC to consider postponement of the October 31 bye-elections by two weeks following the ongoing #endsars protests.
The IPAC chairman, Femi Olaniyi, in a statement in Lagos, said that the postponement had become imperative for seamless and hitch-free bye-elections across the country.
“In view of the present ongoings in the country generally, INEC should postpone all bye-elections nationwide by two weeks because all political parties could not campaign as required due to the #EndSARS protests nationwide.
“Going ahead with the election on 31st October will be a biased action against the new and upcoming political parties that needed to create more awareness.
“This is the first election in Lagos after the de-registration of some political parties and campaign can only be done during the election period to make known to the public the currently registered parties,” he said.
However, when contacted, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said the Commission was yet to take a decision on whether to postpone the elections or not.

Burna Boy
By Taiwo Okanlawon
Award-winning singer, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy is promoting a new petition in the United Kingdom to sanction the federal government and public officials for human rights abuses over the #endsars movement.
The petition on the UK government and parliament website accused the government and the police of violating the rights of agitators protesting against police brutality.
It urged the UK to implement sanctions that allow “individuals and entities that violate human rights around the world to be targeted.”
“Deploying sanctions would provide accountability for and be a deterrent to anyone involved in violations of human rights,” it read.
The singer who is currently in the UK urged British citizens and residents, to sign the petition, urging other people in America and Asia to the same.
He wrote, “I am in London and I’m doing my best to make sure sanctions are imposed against Nigerian Government Officials. I need all citizens of all European countries, America, Asia EVERYWHERE to please Do the Same. THEY MUST ALL PAY!!”
The page noted that the petition, created on Tuesday and which can only be signed by British citizens and residents, will be considered in the UK parliament when it reaches its target of 100,000 signatures.
73,517 individuals have so far signed a petition as at the time of filing this report.
This is coming after multiple reports of massive shootings of #endsars protesters by security agents at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday evening.

NBA Condemns Lekki Killings, Sets To Begin Legal Actions Against FG, Military
The Nigerian Bar Association on Tuesday condemned the killing of peaceful #endsars protesters by soldiers at Lekki tollgate in Lagos.
The NBA President, Mr Olumide Akpata, stated in a statement asked the Nigerian Army to immediately identify the soldiers who carried out the attack and dismiss them from service.
He also said the association would immediately commence legal actions against the Nigerian government and the Army at both international and local fora.
He said the suits would be initiated by the NBA on behalf of the families of the victims, “for abuse of power, disregard of rules of engagement and the infringement of the fundamental rights (including right to life) of the affected citizens”.
He stated in the statement titled, ‘Nigerian Bar Association condemns the killing of peaceful #endsars protesters in Lagos by the Nigerian military’, the protesters’ act of misdemeanor of a breach of the curfew imposed by the Lagos State Government “did not warrant the use of live ammunition by the Nigerian military to confront otherwise peaceful, unarmed and defenseless protesters”.
The statement read in part, “The attention of the Nigerian Bar Association (“NBA”) has been drawn to the dastardly shooting and killing of #endsars protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos State by some unidentified men of the Nigerian Military on Tuesday, 20th October 2020. From news reports on the incident, many lives were lost in the attack while several others were injured during the melee that ensued. The NBA strongly condemns this act of recklessness and lawlessness by the security apparatus of the Government in what, based on reports available to us, appears to have been a carefully calculated and premeditated attack.
“The NBA states that even if the protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza were in breach of the curfew imposed by the Lagos State Government, such a misdemeanor or breach did not warrant the use of live ammunition by the Nigerian military to confront otherwise peaceful, unarmed and defenseless protesters. To be clear, the events of today are events that we should never see or consider as normal in any democracy. Against the backdrop of this ugly development, the NBA wishes to state as follows:
“The military high command is hereby requested to immediately identify and name the officers involved in this gross professional misconduct for immediate prosecution and dismissal in line with extant laws.
“The NBA shall immediately commence legal proceedings at all relevant fora (both locally and internationally) against the Nigerian Military and other relevant authorities, on behalf of the families of the victims, for abuse of power, disregard of rules of engagement and the infringement of the fundamental rights (including right to life) of the affected citizens.
” Given the degenerating nature of the crisis, an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (the highest decision-making body of the NBA) will be convened within the next 48 hours to review the state of the Nation and take other appropriate steps to decisively deal with the situation and prevent the nation from further going adrift.”
Akpata said the current situation in the country “calls for dynamic leadership and, as critical stakeholders in the Nigerian project”, calling on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) and others in authority “to show uncommon leadership in saving the situation, instead of deploying troops against defenseless citizens whom they swore an oath to protect.”

EndSARS: Shut Down Twitter In Nigeria - Adamu Garba Tells Court
A former Presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Adamu Garba, has filed a suit before a Federal High Court asking the court to compel the Nigerian Communications Commission to shut down Twitter and prevent it from operating within the Nigerian cyberspace.
Garba, in a fundamental human rights suit filed on Monday, prayed the court to “direct the 7th respondent (NCC) to stop the operation of Twitter International Company in any part of the territory of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Ironically, Garba, who is a very active user of Twitter, has over 32,000 followers.
The #endsars protests have been largely coordinated on Twitter where it has also been able to gather funding.
Twitter Chief Executive Officer, Jack Dorsey, had last week endorsed the #endsars campaign and posted links to donations, a move which drew the ire of Garba.
Although the Nigerian Senate is currently considering an ‘Anti-Social Media Bill’, there are no known instances of the Federal Government shutting down social media sites
Other African countries like Burundi, Benin Republic and Sudan have in the past shut down social media amid criticisms from international rights groups.
According to the BBC, several people were unable to access these platforms except with the use of Virtual Private Networks which disguise a user’s presence on the Internet.
In 2019, these instances of shutdowns collectively cost Sub-Saharan Africa about $2.16bn.
