Don’t Embarrass Government With Your EndSARS Reports - NBC Tells Media House

The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has warned media houses in the country to cautiously feature user-generated content in their reports.

In a statement released on Tuesday night, the regulator said this directive is aimed at preventing embarrassment to “individuals, organisations, government or cause disaffection, incite to panic or rift in the society at large”.

The NBC said it has been monitoring the coverage and reportage of the #endsars protests and commended media houses for being conscious of their role as gatekeepers and the fourth estate of the realm.

“In specific terms, the commission enjoined broadcasters to take definite note of the following provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code to further guide their broadcast during this challenging time,” the statement read.

The sections of the broadcasting code extracted by the NBC as a reminder for media houses are:

1.3.3 Broadcast technology enables the broadcaster to bring information on issues of concern to the audience with immediacy. In the event of a crisis, the advantages of broadcast technologies may be used but not in a manner to aggravate the situation or adversely affect those emotionally involved;

5.4.1 (b) At all times, ensure that the coverage of a disaster or crisis is aimed at the overall public interest, guidance, and safety;

5.4.3 In reporting conflict situations, the broadcaster shall perform the role of a peace agent by adhering to the principle of responsibility, accuracy, and neutrality;

5.6.2 The broadcaster shall approach with restraints, the use of materials from user-generated sources in order not to embarrass individuals, organisations, government or cause disaffection, incite to panic or rift in the society at large

Kwara Police Boss Drums Support For EFCC’s Anti-Graft War

The fight against corruption in the country received a boost as the Kwara state police command declared support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its bid to rid the country of corruption.

The commissioner of police for the command, Kayode Egbetokun, gave this assurance last Thursday while receiving the zonal head of the Ilorin office of the agency, Kazeem Oseni, a deputy chief detective superintendent, who was at the command’s headquarters on a courtesy visit.

According to Egbetokun, the major problem bedevilling the country was corruption and must be tackled on all fronts in order to move the nation forward. He said the EFCC had the enormous task in dealing with the menace and needed the support of every stakeholder to deliver on its mandate.

“The police and the EFCC have no option than to work together for the good of this country. The cordial relationship between us must continue. There’s need for synergy in order to bail the country out of the shackles of corruption”, the CP said.

The police boss also used the occasion to call on officers of the anti-corruption agency to continue to uphold the virtues of discipline and professionalism it was known for saying, his office was ever ready to support its operations.

2023 Governorship: APC Re-Strategises To Take Over Ebonyi

As the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announce February 18, 2023 as the date for presidential election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has vowed to amend their 2019 mistakes and take over Ebonyi State Government House in 2023.

The decision was made during the peace and unity meeting in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital.

Minister of science and technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, at the meeting, appealed to party stakeholders to come together and form a formidable force that will remove PDP from power in the state. He urged APC members to work as a team to make Ebonyi one of the decision makers at the national level of the party by supporting the party programmes.

The party further call for establishment of presidential liaison office in Abakaliki to oversee federal government incentives for the grassroots, accusing rival PDP of mismanagement. “We want APC flag to fly in Ebonyi Government House. I want to assure you: if we can work together, there is no mountain we can’t climb. And it is very important that we do so.

APC state chairman, Pastor Eze Nwachukwu, addressing journalists, said the meeting was in line with national reconciliation policy. He said the peace talks had started at the local government level before the final one at the state party office.

“Today, all factions, all leaders have accepted to stop their bickering, restrategise and move forward for winning elections in 2023. All this didn’t happen without some far-reaching decisions ranging from the house mandating the leader of the party, Ogbonnaya Onu, the honourable ministry of science and technology, the former governor, Chief Martins Elechi, Senator Chris Nwankwo, Hon Ugo Chima, Senator Anthony Agbo, Hon. Chinedu Ogah and the party chairman to form a committee that will ensure that the imposition of candidates and all that made us not to win election in 2019 didn’t happen again.

“And above all they should take a step to consult the national leadership of the party and the federal government because the way and manner Ebonyi state government handles federal government incentives is quite disheartening. The, house today agreed that party discipline is today paramount and that any anti-party act will be vehemently addressed.

#endsars Protesters Storm EEDC, Cite ‘Outrageous’ Electricity Bills

The Okpara Avenue and other parts of the Enugu metropolis were, last Thursday, grounded as traders, mechanics and various artisans with their businesses at Coal Camp, Ogbete Main Market, staged a peaceful protest to the Southeast Regional Office of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, with complaints of high electricity billings.

They claimed that the bills kept skyrocketing every billing cycle and that all efforts made to draw the attention of the distribution company had failed.

Our correspondent captured protesters singing their resolve to always fight for their rights in solidarity even as some of them carried placards bearing inscriptions such as: #eedc Bills Kill Faster Than COVID-19#, ‘Say no to high bill from EEDC,’ ‘we shall continue to fight until we get what we want,’ among others.

One of the protesters, a mechanic who identified himself simply as Osita, said, “I live in one room and, this last month alone, my electricity bill was N13, 700. I don’t stay in my room during the daytime. And not every evening that we do have light. So, how do they check the bills? EEDC has come to kill us. We shall continue to protest until they change how they cheat us. Every week, they disconnect our supply and ask us to pay N2, 000 each for reconnection.”

A mother, Nkechi, who carried a placard with the inscription ‘EEDC, Stop Extorting Coal Campers’, said, “I sell waterproofs at Coal Camp. My bill is over N40, 000. What do I get to be given such bills? Every day, they come with new bills. They say that they will give us electricity metres, but not even one person has got any. They are simply cheating us.”

One of the protesters, who claimed he was briefed by the authorities of the EEDC after he was invited inside their office, addressed the protesters saying, “We resolved some issues, but we were told to end the protest and return to our various businesses where I will brief you. And if we didn’t agree (with the terms of the resolution), we (could) resume our protest on Saturday.”

However, his response did not appear to be acceptable to his colleagues who booed him for not extracting immediate answers from the EEDC officials. The protesters proceeded with their march, heading towards the premises of the Radio Nigeria, Enugu.

Efforts to speak with the head of the media, EEDC, Mr Emeka Eze, proved abortive.

Rivers Mothers Join #endsars, Wike Says ‘No Probe Panel’

Mothers in Rivers state, under the auspices of Concerned Mothers in Rivers State, Monday, staged a special mothers’ version of the #endsars protest, marching through major streets of Port Harcourt, through the State House of Assembly Complex and terminating at the Government House where they were received by the state deputy governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo.

This was as the state governor, Nyesom Wike, stated that he would not set up the commission of inquiry into police brutality as was recommended by the federal government in its response to the demands of the #endsars protesters.

The women were led by some prominent women leaders in the state such as veteran actress Hilda Dokubo, rights activist Ann-Kio Briggs, Mrs Ivy Davies Etokakpan, among others.

At the State House of Assembly Complex, the women were locked out without any member of the assembly on hang to receive them and this gravely enraged the women.

They were, however, received at the Government House, by the deputy governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, a mother, too.

Speaking on behalf of the “Concerned Mothers in Rivers State”, Etokakpan said the protest was to lend their voices to end police brutality in the country.

She noted that, within the last two weeks, mothers in the state had heard gruesome stories of police brutality on young people and called on the police in the state to carry out their duties in line with international best practices.

Also speaking, Nollywood Actress, Hilda Dokubo, said the protest which was devoid of ethnic, religious and political affiliation, was against the system of governance in the country.

She advocated an end to institutionalised injustice, inequality and lack of development and called for a new Constitution that would guarantee freedom, access to good roads, quality education and healthcare.

Governor Wike, in response to the federal government recommendation that state governments set up panels to probe complaints of brutality and other abuses, explained that he had earlier set up a commission of inquiry into the activities of SARS in Rivers state and regretted that police authorities refused to implement the findings.

The governor, through Banigo, restated his call for the total reform of the Nigeria Police Force.

He recalled that Rivers state was the first to raise an alarm in 2015 over the negative activities of SARS, saying the federal government refused to respond appropriately.

The governor emphasised that it was only through total reform of the police that the injustice meted to innocent citizens of the country could stop.

He said; “As a government, we feel your pains and this injustice must surely stop. To tell you the level of impunity, some SARS officers that were even caught on camera killing people were even promoted.

“I want to thank you for the peaceful way you have conducted yourselves and assure you that we shall work together,” he stated.

Enugu SARS Cells Now Empty – Enugu CP

The Enugu state commissioner of police, Mr. Ahmad Abdurrahman, has confirmed that the cell of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, in the state was empty.

According to the police chief, all the pending cases being handled prior to their disbandment had been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

He spoke when Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state visited the defunct SARS office in Enugu to confirm compliance with the closure directive.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who was accompanied by the state attorney general and commissioner for justice, Mr. Miletus Eze and his information counterpart, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, was received by Abdurrahman, who took him round the facilities, including the empty cells.

The commissioner of police confirmed to the governor, who he described as “the most friendly and security-disposed governor” that the SARS unit had been closed accordingly.

He said that, prior to the order disbanding the SARS operatives, there were 11 suspects in their detention facility located within the Enugu state capital.

“Today, we don’t have SARS in Enugu; the chief detective of the state, a deputy commissioner of police has taken over the cases.

“As of the day that the unit was disbanded, they had 11 suspects, out of whom one person was based on court order, while 10 are being investigated.

“We returned the one that was on court order to court and he has been taken to Correctional Centre. Of the remaining 10, five have been taken to court this morning and the investigation on remaining five is still pending. It is being investigated by men of the State Criminal Investigation Department.

“Having said this, I want to reiterate that there is now an empty cell here; the unit is no more,” he disclosed.

In his remark, the state attorney general, Mr. Eze, disclosed that the Judicial Panel of Inquiry recently constituted by Gov. Ugwuanyi to investigate complaints of police brutality or related extrajudicial killings, as demanded by the protesters, would be inaugurated on Wednesday.

#endsars Protest: Edo Govt Sets Up Judicial Panel

The Edo state government has set up a 12-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry to unravel circumstances surrounding the #endsars protests in the state.

Secretary to the state government, Osarodion Ogie, in a statement, disclosed that the panel had 90 days to complete the assignment.

According to him, the panel chaired by Hon. Justice Ada Ehigiamusoe, with Mrs. Joyce Ugbodaga as secretary, was set up in response to the yearnings of Nigerian youths, as articulated in the demands of the #endsars protesters.

Other members of the committee include Bishop Feb Idahosa, (Clergy), Francis Osayi, (ASUU), Comrade Osahon Obasuyi (NYC), Prest Aigbokhian (Civil Society), Mrs Uloaku Uzamere (NCWS), Comrade Pius Efofan (NANS), Pius Okpere (#endsars Movement), Comrade Kola Edokpayi (#endsars Movement), Mrs Felicia Monyei (Ministry of Justice) and a representative of security forces.

Ogie said the terms of reference of the panel were “to receive complaints and petitions from the general public, particularly victims or relatives of victims of police brutality and extra-judicial killings, and to recommend measures, including compensation and restitution, investigation and prosecution, as the circumstances warrant.

“To advise on compensation or restitution to the victims, or- where the victim has been killed- to the family of the victim, based on condition which shall be clearly laid out by the Committee. To ensure that compensation is paid within 14 days of the decision to compensate.”

The panel will also recommend and direct the attorney general to immediately prosecute all persons responsible for the various crimes committed; recommend measures to forestall reoccurrences in the future and make any other recommendations to government in furtherance of the mandate of this committee.

The statement further read, “The Panel has been given 90 days to complete this assignment. All hearings will be open to the general public. All interested persons are advised to send their complaints, petitions and suggestions to the committee.

Meanwhile, the #endsars protests in Benin City, Edo state would appear to have been hijacked by other interests, probably including cult groups.

Sources said that some persons had, before the #endsars protest, allegedly dropped a letter without address on the floor of a makeshift duilding opposite the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo State Council. In the letter, they stated that since they had been frustrated by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, they would look out for any slight opportunity to cause a mayhem

Part of the unsigned letter reads: “Obaseki has refused to bring us on board in his government, and we shall look at out for an opportunity to cause a mayhem and make situation tensened (sic) in Benin City and its environs for him to see that we are very useful in the state.”

It was gathered that the hoodlums, in the early hours of on Monday, laid siege around every take-off point of the genuine protesters as they made themselves available as forerunners before the unsuspecting protesters.

The protesters’ (and embedded hoodlums’) first port of call was the Nigeria Correctional Service along Sapele Road in Benin City where they allegedly beat up and disarmed official security agents and released prisoners. Police commissioner in the state, Johnson Kokumo, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, however, said that 16 runaway inmates were rearrested, and 13 others still on the run and being sought by security agents. He also informed that six persons were killed in another mayhem and 35 others critically injured during a protest in Auchi, in the northern part of the state.

The police commissioner, Mr Johnson Kokumo, further disclosed that several persons were arrested, adding that some policemen were injured in the Benin.

Passers-by who failed to shout ” Buhari must Go” were beaten up and their clothes torn while young ladies they considered improperly dressed were heavily embarrassed.
