Tinubu Reacts To Sanwo-Olu's Move To Cancel Pension For Ex Governors & Deputies

Former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu has described the move by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to repeal the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007) as “bold and courageous”, Igbere TV reports.

The law provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former governors and their deputies.

Mr Sanwo-Olu told the State House of Assembly of his intention on Tuesday during his presentation of the proposed N1.155 trillion 2021 budget.

Tweeting on Wednesday, Tinubu expressed his support for the governor’s plan and congratulated him on the budget proposal.

“Congratulations to Governor Sanwo-Olu over the Y2021 budget which he appropriately christened ‘Budget of Rekindled Hope’. This audacious and enterprising budget will empower our people and begin to rebuild Lagos State,” the APC leader wrote.

“In particular, I would also like to commend the Governor for the plan to commence the repeal of the Pension Law giving pension packages to former governors and their deputies.

“This is a bold and courageous move by Mr. Governor and I wholeheartedly support him. I encourage all APC loyalists to do the same.”

Sanwo-Olu told the assembly he planned to repeal the law “in light of keeping the costs of governance low and to signal selflessness in public service.”

Igbere TV reports that the move if granted will see an end to the payment of pension to former governors of the state including Babatunde Fashola and Tinubu.

Kenechukwu Okeke, a self-acclaimed rights activist recently dragged Pastor Sam Adeyemi, Falz, Banky W, Aisha Yesufu and a host of others to court over the #endsars protest.

Little is known on the internet about Okeke but it has been gathered this is not the first time he is suing people for different public matters.

Mr Okeke gained popularity on Tuesday when the news media reported he filed a suit against 50 persons he claimed fuelled the #endsars protest in October, Igbere TV reports.

On his Twitter handle @HumanRightsNG, Okeke describes himself as a human rights activist, advocate, master of jurisprudence, messenger of God, “eze nri” and radical defender of human rights.

Okeke is the national coordinator of Good Governance Initiative a civil society NGO.

Igbere TV recall that in May 2020, he said he would sue the Nigeria Police Force after news broke that a policeman’s stray bullet killed 16-year-old Tina Ezekwe in Lagos.

He also sued the governor of Anambra State Willie Obiano because of the way his government presented the state budget for 2019.

In that same year, he dragged the Anambra State Government to court for banning the use of tricycles in the state.

Okeke filed his latest criminal complaint before a magistrate court in Abuja.

He said his property were destroyed and the defendants who promoted the #endsars protests must be brought to justice.

Akeredolu: Nothing Wrong In Freezing EndSARS Protesters' Accounts

Ondo State governor Rotimi Akeredolu has defended the freezing of bank accounts belonging to some #EndSARS campaigners by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“Speaking very honestly, I don’t see anything wrong in it,” Akeredolu said in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

“If for instance, my account was frozen, what would I do? All I would do is go back to court to explain.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in October froze the account of 20 persons alleged to have funded the two-week-long protest against harassment, extortion and extra-judicial killings by police personnel in the country.

Some of the accounts frozen by the apex bank were in Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank and other financial institutions.

The CBN argues that the accounts were being used to finance acts of terrorism in country, thereby, violating the Section 13(1)(a)and(b) of the Terrorism (Prevention)(Amendment) Act, 2013 and Regulation 31(2)(a)and (3)(b) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism Regulations, 2013.

While groups, civil societies and opposition parties have criticised the government of being oppressive, Akeredolu said the persons whose accounts were frozen should approach the court to challenge the CBN.

“Even politicians, their accounts are sometimes frozen. You have to go to court and explain,” Akeredolu said “And at the end of the day, the court will say, ‘Leave the account. The account should be de-frozen’ and you take your money back.”

Akeredolu, a former chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, said the protesters should explain the source of the monies in their accounts and the purposes they were meant for.

The CBN in an ex-parte to the frozen accounts told the court that the accounts were being used to finance terrorism but did not mention the owners being linked to the #EndSARS protest. This, Akeredolu said is not a conclusion to the matter.

He downplayed insinuations that the protesters are being charged for a treasonable offence.

“If your account is frozen, you justify why the money was there. You come to explain to what use you have put this money,” Akeredolu said.

“It is just that we (CBN) suspected this account then the owner of the account will explain. it is not a conclusion that those accounts were used for acts of treason.

Wentworth Miller Says He’s Done With Prison Break: ‘I Just Don’t Want to Play Straight Characters’

In case you were holding out hope that one day Fox’s drama Prison Break might finally deliver you a sixth season, well, it hypothetically it could, but it will apparently be without one of its leading men, Wentworth Miller.

On Sunday, the Madam Secretary and The Flash actor declared himself a wrap on all future iterations of Prison Break, having come to a decision. “I’m out. Of PB. Officially,” he wrote on Instagram. “Not bec of static on social media (although that has centered the issue.) I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”

Miller, who came out as gay in 2013, starred in the series as Michael Schofield, who attempts to spring his brother Lincoln Burrows, played by Dominic Purcell, from death row by getting himself incarcerated in the same prison. After airing its first four seasons between 2005 and 2009, the series returned for a nine-episode fifth season in 2017, and as recently as January, Fox has occasionally dangled a potential sixth season or limited series as a possibility. According to TVLine, however, a Fox source says the network isn’t “currently in active development” on a Prison Break project.

“So. No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry,” Miller wrote on Instagram. “If you’re hot and bothered b/c you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one… That’s your work.”

IPPIS: PENGASSAN Declare Meeting With Government Inconclusive, Continue Strike

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) on Wednesday said a meeting it held with the Federal Government was inconclusive.

The President, Felix Osifo, gave the update in a statement.

He said the government was yet to address some of PENGASSAN’s demands.

The parties had disagreed after the directive that the oil workers register for the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Osifo disclosed that PENGASSAN maintained that Petroleum Training Institute and Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency, must be paid using the harmonized template of 2015.

He noted that this was already in use by the budget office, appropriated by the National Assembly and signed by President Muhammadu Buhari into law.

The labour leader said the union wants a high-powered committee, comprising Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers and PENGASSAN Presidents, to settle the outstanding issues surrounding the IPPIS platform.

“For the 22 months salary arrears, government agreed to pay 50 per cent and that the balance would be worked out after Federation Accounts Allocation Committee has met. PENGASSAN has agreed, but insisted that there should be a definite date for payment of the balance,’’ he said.

Border Reopening: 'Was Nigeria Created For Dangote Or Was Dangote Created For Nigeria?' - FFK

The Nigerian government has allowed Dangote Cement to resume exports across its land borders which have been closed for over a year; and this has raised brows, IgbereTV reports

BUA Group and a gas company have also received presidential approval to move goods across the land borders, Joseph Attah, the spokesperson for Nigerian Customs, said.

A number of Nigerians reacted asking the reason for this preferential treatment.

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode reacted on Instagram by sharing a photo of Dangote and writing:

"During the Covid19 lockdown Dangote trucks were allowed to drive through Ogun state but everyone else was stopped.

"Today Dangote trucks are allowed to go through our land borders but everyone else is stopped.

"Was Nigeria created for Dangote or was Dangote created for Nigeria?"
