THE TEN LEPERS

BIBLE READING:Psalm 107:21-38

And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God. And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole. Luke 17:12-19(NKJV)

Thanksgiving is not a function of a circumstance, but an attribute of faith in the ability of God. Ten lepers encountered Jesus, and immediately received healing. They all suffered from the same problem, and all received the same measure of deliverance. However, only one of the lepers returned back to God to express gratitude, why?

Jesus pondered on this too; "And Jesus answering said, ‘Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?" Luke17:17 (NKJV). Why did the 9 lepers walk away without offering gratitude? Jesus explained their lack of ingratitude to be a function of their lack of faith. The leper who returned may have had the need to be whole, but he was grateful for what he had received, knowing therefore that the one who was able to heal him could also make him whole. With this conviction, the need to be made whole was not magnified, to take the place of the worship of God.

Very often we receive God's intervention in specific issues of life and before we consider offering praise to God, another situation presents itself. At this point, we find our actions likened to that of the 9 lepers, as we fail to give God praise. If only we can understand that, as we praise God for the little, more will be given. Why don’t you make a deliberate decision to thank God for every victory of the past, thereby magnifying the power of God above the present difficulty. Knowing surely that he who delivered you in the first instance is able to make you whole.

Has God done anything worthy of praise? Given you life, good health, shelter, a job etc.? Have you thanked Him for it, while hoping for the additional need? By so doing God will exalt you above that circumstance like he did to the leper who came back to say thank you.

PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, help me to acknowledge everything you have done in my life, so that I can give you praise/thanks for it while I hope for intervention in present challenges.
