Banks Lose Over N1bn As Hoodlums Wreck ATMs, Branches

Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in the country likely lost over a billion naira, last week, to the destruction of their facilities across the country by hoodlums hiding under the umbrella of the #end- SARS protests, findings by New Telegraph show.

The protests, which began on October 7 with calls to disband the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS), an infamous Police unit that had long been accused of extortion, torture and extra-judicial killings, had been largely peaceful.

However, the situation changed dramatically, after armed soldiers, in a bid to dislodge a core group of the #endsars protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Nigeria’s financial hub, Lagos, opened fire, last Tuesday night at unarmed youths, killing and wounding a yet to be determined number and sparking a violent reaction from hoodlums, who seemed to have been waiting for the soldiers’ action as a signal to immediately unleash massive destruction on financial institutions and other businesses across the state, but especially around the Lekki Phase 1 axis.

Being an affluent area of Lagos, Lekki Phase I has well-appointed branches of almost all the major banks in Nigeria.

However, New Telegraph’s correspondent, who visited the locality last Wednesday, reported that virtually none of the lenders’ facilities was spared the destruction wrought by the hoodlums.

Apart from completely destroying all the machines in the lenders’ ATM galleries in their bid to steal cash, the thugs also attempted to set ablaze the branch of a Tier 1 lender in the vicinity. An authoritative industry source told New Telegraph that another Tier 1 lender lost 18 ATMs in the Lekki Phase I area alone to the vandals and about 50 nationwide.

The source said: “Even though the criminals may not have succeeded in stealing cash from all the ATMs they attacked, just by assessing only the destruction to the ATMs at Lekki alone, you can tell that the banks suffered significant losses as a result of this crisis.

“There are at least five or six ATMs in a gallery and the current price of an ATM cannot be less than N5 million. If one of the Tier I lenders is estimating it lost about 50 ATMs nationwide to the crisis, you can guess that the entire banking industry must have lost over 120 ATMs across the country in the last one week.

If you add the cost of damage to bank branches and other facilities, the losses will definitely exceed N1 billion.”

According to the source, another distressing aspect of the hoodlums’ rampage is that it would take the industry nothing less than six months to replace the damaged ATMs and get them working. The source explained: “It would take at least six months to replace the damaged ATMs.

This is because approvals have to be obtained first, before the orders to import the machines are placed. Then you have to wait for them to be shipped into the country, get them cleared at the ports, before you take delivery and then you start configuration of the ATMs and other processes.”

The source also warned that unless the situation in the country returns to normal in the next few days, ATMs may run dry in many cities and towns as banks are still wary of loading cash in their machines as the hoodlums still seem to be on the prowl. Indeed, in an email to its customers at the weekend, Zenith Bank said that it had closed its branches in Lagos and other states of the Federation where the State Governments had imposed 24-hour curfew, adding that its’ ATM and voice call services would also be temporarily unavailable during this period. New Telegraph’s correspondent reported long queues at the few ATMs that were still working in Lagos at the weekend.

Although, the Lagos State Government, last Friday, eased the 24-hour curfew which it had imposed on October 20, 2020, stating that movement of persons is now allowed from 6a.m. to 8p.m., analysts believe that with reports of lootthe ing spree still continuing across the nation as at yesterday, banks may not be in a hurry to resume normal services.

However, commenting on the impact of the crisis on banks in a chat with New Telegraph, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, BIC Consultancy Services, Dr. Boniface Chizea, said he expected lenders to quickly fix the damage to their facilities.

He said: “I expect banks to get some compensation from insurance companies; so the damage to their ATMs and other facilities is something they should quickly sort out. Also, many people have embraced electronic banking and no longer need to physically visit the banking hall for transactions.

But it was an unfortunate development when you consider that the hoodlums appear to have had a free rein vandalizing ATMs with little or no resistance from the security personnel.”

EnuguEndSARS stray bullet saga: No governor orders the military – Army officer

*We were mobilized to protect school girls from hoodlums, criminals

*Miscreants killed, burnt policemen, stations, others

One of the soldiers mobilized by the military to protect the innocent female students at Queens School Enugu, last Saturday, following a security report that armed hoodlums and criminals parading themselves as #enugusars protesters wanted to invade the school in search of COVID-19 palliatives, has opened up on what transpired, contrary to the stories being peddled on the social media, IGBERE TV reports.

The soldier who spoke to our correspondent in confidence disclosed that there was no directive from anybody, as being mischievously peddled on social media, to shoot or kill the hoodlums and criminals who in their numbers, some with weapons, attempted to overpower the security agencies and forcefully invade the school, where the young girls are staying.

The military officer stated categorically that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi did not give them any directive, explaining that “what happened was a case of stray bullet which the hoodlums themselves have questions to answer “because they had dangerous weapons like guns as they were forcefully approaching us to overpower us and go into that school where these girls we were ask to protect were”.

It would be recalled that the principal of Queens School Enugu, Mrs. Ada Nweke, had in a video, sent SOS to the security agencies to come to the rescue of the traumatized girls following the forceful attempt by the hoodlums and criminals to invade the school.

Mrs. Nweke who stated that there were no COVID-19 palliatives still in the school as they had been distributed to the 17 Local Government Areas in August, stressed that “we don’t want what happened to the Chibok girls to happen to these students”.

Prior to the alarm raised by the principal, it was widely reported that the hoodlums and criminals’ aim was to invade the school, in the disguise of #endsars protest looking for palliatives, and then rape and kidnap the female students similarly to what happened to the Chibok girls.

When asked who then directed them to mobilize to the school, the officer said: “This question has a straight answer. The world knows where we take directives from. The military just like other security agencies are exclusively under the control of the federal government and we take instructions from our heads.

“So I don’t know what you mean whether it was the governor that directed us or not. We know who directs us, and even you here asking me this kind of question know too. No governor directs the military or its officers. Please take this message home and stop asking such questions”.

On the 24-hour curfew imposed, the soldier pointed out that “it was unfortunate that these people refused to stay at home and obey the curfew imposed by the state government. They saw us pleading with them to go home but they kept forcing their way to overpower us.

“Are you not aware that these miscreants killed two policemen in this state and burnt one in the process of this protest? They burnt police stations, looted and destroyed a lot of properties belonging to innocent people.

“What have you said about it? Did you report it? Did you see it circulated anywhere on social media by those peddling these lies against the governor and security agencies. Or are security personnel not human beings like you?

“So if a security man is killed by hoodlums it is not news worthy to be spread on this una social media?

“Please go and advise these youths to stop exposing themselves to dangers because as I am talking to you here, a directive has come from the Presidency again that both the military and police should mobilize across the country to stop these lootings, killings and destruction of public and private property.

“Go and warn them before they start accusing the state governors or other persons”.

Umahi: Facilities Destroyed During Riots Won't Be Rebuilt By My Administration

Seeks national, state youth conference

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, at the weekend, said that any facility that he had built but destroyed during the EndSARS protests would not be rebuilt by his administration.

He said that the people should rather protect them.

Umahi stated this while inspecting the various public facilities, including police stations and others, destroyed by hoodlums.

He told the people to always protect all government facilities in their areas as they were built with their money, warning those using the protests to unleash mayhem to have a rethink.

The governor, who noted that four police stations were burnt down, two in Ohaozara Local Council and two in Abakaliki, the state capital, said that he would not rebuild the two in Ohaozara because they were built by him.

“My position is that any facility that I have built and is destroyed, I will not rebuild it in my tenure. The other two police stations damaged by the hoodlums are rented apartments so government will strive hard to build two new police stations.

On the settlement of hospital bills for victims of the #endsars protests, Umahi said that the government would assist provided that such victims were not involved in criminality.

Meanwhile, on way forward to address the youth protest, Umahi advocated for both national and state conference to address the agitation of youth and other challenges facing the country, urging other governors to organise youth conference in their various states.

He said that the meeting would create opportunity for youths’ participation in policy formulation and governance, urging state governors to institute such conference in their states where the youths and elders shall be involved in allocation of the economy.

According to him, “the proposed national conference will address all the agitations of Nigerian youths, particularly the five-point agenda enunciated by them during the ENDSARS protests.”

“There is a lot of misinformation. People think that a leader must make magic. When you are building infrastructure or empowering people, they prefer you share the money.

“No nation will succeed without everybody making up his or her mind. We must all work. I think politics has killed us in Nigeria, as graduates no longer want to work. Even, Ph.D. holders want to be councillors.”

This was contained in a statement by Musleem Aruwa , the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Deputy Governor, Haruna Manu, in Jalingo .

Manu expressed worry that some hoodlums invaded government warehouses containing palliatives and carted away items meant for distribution to members of the public .
The media aide said, “ Government has carefully reviewed developments in the last 24 hours and decided to extend the curfew to safeguard lives and properties.

“ All law -abiding citizens are advised to stay at home and allow security agencies who are under strict instructions to enforce the curfew and equally protect innocent citizens.

“ However, the government is not unaware of people on essential duties, who are similarly requested to carry with them official identification cards to show security operatives on demand to avoid embarrassment.

Garba Shehu: Buhari Avoiding The Lekki Incident Until The Facts Are Established.

As the Judicial panel of inquiry set up by the Lagos State Government, one of the more dozen states to do so, starts sitting on Monday, President @MBuhari has expressed his full support and optimism that it will assist the nation to give justice to peaceful protesters who lost their lives, security men who were murdered and property owners whose assets were vandalized and looted.

The President, who said he had all along avoided going into a debate about the Lekki Toll Gate incidents until all the facts are established, appealed to the people all over the country to maintain peace and brotherhood as the machinery of the government and the wheel of justice turn against the perpetrators of murder, arson, stealing, rape, assault and malicious damage to public and private property.

The President advises that peace, brotherhood, and inter communal harmony are central to our ethos and urges Nigerians “not to turn against one another in hate.”

He said it is important that the police and other security agencies move everywhere to restore calm and normalcy as quickly as possible.

President Buhari said while his administration is working hard through many pragmatic ways to reduce the hardship of the millions of our unemployed, poor citizens and those whose lives have been thrown into disarray by the harsh economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, he warned that resort to widespread attacks and the organized looting and plundering of public and private property in many states are inimical to public good and stand condemned.

A government that has launched a massive crackdown on corruption, brought in strong laws for a decisive battle against corruption, pursues loot recovery at home and abroad, and taken strong decisions against those who thought they were above the law, will not fold its arms when an otherwise legitimate and peaceful protest is turning into free-for-all vandalism and looting.

While the administration has, for its part, blocked so many means of looting public money, it is the expectation that all civil authorities, community & religious leaders in the country must rise against the organized looting & plunder we are witnessing in parts of the country.

What is more, is that criminal actions as we have so far witnessed can weaken and erode the confidence of our people and that of foreign businesses in investing in the economy.
Looting and vandalism will hurt trade and investment growth in our country, both large and small industries, as well as our hardworking people in the informal sectors of the economy.
These incidents do not reflect well on any society.

They are wrong and condemnable and should not be supported by reasonable members of the society.
In line with this, President Buhari commends the decision of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to prosecute 229 suspects arrested by the police for allegedly using the #endsars protest to destroy and loot public and private property.

As mentioned in two successive statements on the issues, the President and his administration have taken note of the grievances of the people. “We have heard you loud and clear,” he said, and has shown a clear determination to take all necessary measures to address the complaints

Nevertheless, the violence must stop.
President Buhari also condemned hate messages and eviction notices to ethnic and religious groups asking Nigerians to take pride in the fact that our diverse people have been living with one another in harmony for ages.

The right of all citizens to live and work in any part of the country is a constitutional right and will be defended by the government.
