#endsars: Goodluck Jonathan Condemns The “Use Of Deadly Force” On Protesters

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has
condemned the “use of deadly force” on
#endsars protesters in Lagos state.

In a statement on Thursday, Jonathan said such
actions will only worsen the situation, calling on
all parties to embrace dialogue.

Nationwide protests against the now-dissolved
police special anti-robbery squad (SARS)
metamorphosed into agitation for improved
governance in addition to justice for victims of
police brutality.

On Tuesday, soldiers shot at the young
protesters while they converged on the Lekki
tollgate.

Twelve people died in the shooting and in a
related development in Ikeja, according to
Amnesty International.

In the statement shared with TheCable, the
former president said the event of recent days
“has been a difficult time to me as well”.

He said the task of building a nation must
involve both the old and the young, adding that
Nigeria “cannot afford to lose the lives of our
youth who we look up to take over leadership
and continue our nation’s journey to
greatness”.

“As leaders, we must understand that a nation
can never win a battle against its own
people,” he said.

“Thus, the use of deadly force against citizens
only aggravates tense situations rather than
assuage it. We must therefore move away from
battlegrounds to middle grounds in our individual
and national life. This, I believe, epitomises the
essence of democracy.

“I condemn any unnecessary loss of life and urge
efforts to be stepped up to ensure that there is
no such reoccurrence.

“We all must accept that we are all brothers and
sisters of one Nigeria, and always act towards
each other accordingly.”

Jonathan, who added that “nobody’s interest is
worth the blood of any Nigerian citizen,” asked
security agencies to ensure maximum restraint
is applied in carrying out their constitutional
responsibilities of protecting lives and property.

He also asked young Nigerians to “give peace a
chance especially now that different
stakeholders have demonstrated the willingness
to investigate the various allegations of
excessive use of force on citizens and address
the culture of impunity by security personnel”.

The mall was not spared in their raid as it has most goodies they wanted. A quick look into the mall sees all items carted away with nothing left behind.

EIE, Apologises For Spreading Fake News Over Lekki Shooting

There are indications that more people and organizations are coming to realize the errors in their allegations over the alleged Lekki shootings. One of Nigeria’s leading organizations Enough is Enough has admitted it was wrong over its initial publication and allegations that the state governor Babajide Sanwoolu ordered the removal of CCTV cameras from the Lekki Toll Gate.

EiE, led by Yemi Adamolekun is one of the credible organizations in Nigeria that other global bodies rely on for its positions on Nigerian affairs. The European Union, United Nations, and other have condemned state authorities over alleged state-sponsored “killings at the Lekki gate”.

Yemi Adamolekun, took to its Twitter page to tender the apology admitting that it was wrong over its initial publication and allegations that the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered the removal of CCTV cameras from the Lekki Toll Gate. The apology and other events after the Lekki shootings give indications that more people and organizations are coming to realize the errors in their allegations over the alleged attack on the #endsars protesters at the protest venue.

The NGO tweeted: “This was an error. These cameras are not CCTV cameras but license plate verification cameras. “They were removed to prevent vandalization after Gov Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the curfew.

“He has said the CCTV footage is intact. We apologise for the error. EIE is adjudged one of the credible organizations in Nigeria that other global bodies rely on for its positions on Nigerian affairs.

Nigerian Army Arrests Soldier Who Asked Colleagues Not To Kill #endsars Protesters.

In the video uploaded last week, the soldier, who was wearing a mask, had asked his colleagues to understand that the protesters were fighting for a better Nigeria and must be supported by all citizens including the military.

The Nigerian Army has arrested Lance Corporal Harrison Friday, who advised his colleagues not to attack #endsars protesters, a report by Premium Times said.

In the video uploaded last week, the soldier, who was wearing a mask, had asked his colleagues to understand that the protesters were fighting for a better Nigeria and must be supported by all citizens including the military.

Thousands of Nigerians have been protesting nationwide for the past two weeks to demand comprehensive police reform and more broadly, better governance.

Friday said in the video that he had intelligence reports military troops might soon be deployed to end the demonstrations.

“My advice goes to every fellow soldier, you guys should not be fooled or used, we are the youths. The fight of every civilian is our fight. My advice goes to the new people in the system, I’m talking about 19 and 20 NA. For this struggle they will deploy you. I’m hearing rumours that want to deploy some soldiers to scare the protesters.

“Remember, if you people are deployed, if you take an unlawful order and your fire and you fire a civilian, people you are firing – remember the bullet may go and hit your brother or your sister.

"Remember that the fighting that these people are fighting is our fight. If Nigeria is ok, nobody will fly out of the country. Soldiers have run away from this job, some to Dubai, seeking for greener pastures. If every soldier is well paid, every civilian is well paid. Nobody will leave the country,” he said in a video where he wore a mask.

However, the army said the soldier had been hiding “behind the mask to commit cyber crimes”.

In a tweet accompanied by the soldier’s pictures on Wednesday, the army said his arrest was part of operation “Crocodile Smile”.

“The hooded soldier hiding behind the mask to commit cybercrime has been apprehended in the ongoing cyber operation in support of Crocodile Smile VI. Rest assured, cyber criminals have no hiding place,” the tweet read.
