THE MIND THAT UNDERSTANDS

BIBLE READING: 1 KINGS 3:5-14

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints. EPH 1:17-18KJV

The mind is the seat of consciousness for the human being. It is what is responsible for personality and all the character traits that man expresses. It is a component of the soul, just like the will and the emotions. It holds the power of imagination, recognition, and appreciation, and is responsible for processing feelings and emotions, resulting in attitudes and actions. Put differently, the mind simply means the element of a person that enables them to be aware of the world and their experiences, to think, and to feel. The mind is a fundamental part of man that determines the state of man’s existence and well-being.

On the other hand, understanding is a psychological process related to an object, a person, or a situation. It is being able to comprehend meaning inherent in whatever is being associated with.

The mind that understands is therefore the mind that appreciates and comprehends. However in the spiritual realm, the mind that understands is the mind that can grasp spiritual truths and spiritual realities. It is the mind that is sensitive to spiritual reception and can correctly interpret the signals it receives.

From our Bible reading today, Solomon gave God a great offering which occasioned a divine visitation and God gave Solomon a blank cheque and in response, Solomon entreated the Lord to “ give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? 1 Kings 3:9KJV Solomon’s request pleased the Lord and in response the Lord granted his request far beyond what he imagined – “Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. 1 Kings 3:12

As a result of man’s fallen nature, the mind does not naturally understand, “ But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”‭ I Corinthians‬ ‭2:14‬ NKJV.
Hence Paul’s admonition in Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. The eyes of our mind can be enlightened so our mind can understand the ways of God and our calling in Christ Jesus. So that we no longer understand just with our natural minds, but our spiritual minds will also be open and sensitive to hear God, and understand what he says to our spirits.

ACTION POINT:
Go to God in genuine repentance for every time your mind failed to understand the things of God and you leaned on your understanding or judged rationally in the flesh. As the Lord for the Spirit of understanding and for eyes of your understanding to be enlightened so you can acknowledge God in all you do.
