FCT Councils Urged To Make Skills Acquisition Compulsory

An appeal has been made to area council administrations in the Federal Capital Territory to reduce drug abuse, unemployment and restiveness by making skills acquisition compulsory for youths.

A philanthropist, Alhaji Yahaya Maikasuwa, made the appeal at the closing ceremony of a three-day skills acquisition workshop organised for selected youths and women in Gwagwalada.

Maikasuwa explained that he was moved to sponsor the training programme by the high level of unemployment, crime and drug abuse within the territory.

“This programme was designed to empower the beneficiaries through skills acquisition. I realised that we have so many unemployed youths who idle away and engage in negative activities despite their talents. I am happy we have given them the opportunity to learn something useful that will keep them properly engaged.

“We hope that the skills will encourage the beneficiaries to be self-reliant and productive in the society.”

The business man urged area council administrations to make skills acquisition by youths and women a priority and compulsory in the territory to reduce poverty and crime.

He also advised beneficiaries to make proper use of the skills to improve themselves and their families.

The participants, who learned various skills of choice ranging from tailoring, hairdressing, barbing, carpentry, brick making, shoe manufacturing, welding and paint production, were drawn from the 10 wards of Gwagwalada Area Council.
