70-Year-Old Ebonyi Woman, Girl Escape Kerosine Explosion

A 70-year-old woman, Igwe Elizabeth of 3 Jemeni Street, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state has sustained severe injuries following an explosion occasioned by the use of adulterated kerosene in her home. A 21-year old girl living on the same street is also battling for her own life following the injuries she sustained from an adulterated kerosine.

The girl, Chinenye Ezekwenna, who resides at 40 Jemeni Street suffered burns on her legs, arm and jaw, explained that she bought the suspected adulterated kerosene from a retail shop.

She was seen using ordinary water to clean the severe burn on her body while the 70- year old woman said she had been treated at a hospital and now being managed by a nurse at her private home.

Chinenye narrated that the kerosene exploded when she poured it on smouldering firewood as she was cooking.

On her part, Igwe said the kerosene exploded when she was refilling her hurricane lamp in the night. According to her, the suspected adulterated kerosene was purchased by a little boy from a road side seller.

When contacted, the special assistant to Ebonyi state governor on petroleum, Bassey Chima, could not immediately react to the report although he promised to get back to our correspondent. He did not do so, even as at press time.
